  • Opening up the transaxle off of my John Deere STX38, yellow deck. Last summer while I was mowing, it got stuck in reverse and the shifter wouldn't budge. I finally found the time to open this thing up and was able to get it fixed. Thanks for watching! Let me know if you have any questions.

I do have a tip for you on holding a pulley. Take a loop of old v- belt and rub it lightly on v side with brake fluid (softens belt, makes it "grab". Twist the loop down with a stick or bar until really tight in the pulley groove and brace the stick/ bar on the casting, then use socket and cheater pipe on breakover handle. Won't damage your pulley that way.
**Or use impact wrench if you can get hold of one.

No nut holding my pulley down, just a circlip and RUST. Circlip removed in seconds. Sprayed down several times a day for 2 weeks. Used a point in a Makita percussion doodad several times. Hasn't budged.
    Ideas.

Before all that check the drive pedal for binding, when ours gear shifter got stuck in reverse, the drive pedal was stuck so we gave the drive pedal a jerk towards the back of the mower it made a pop sound and now it shifts fine, the problem was lack of lube on drive pedal linkage.

I believe the "thing that's jammed" are the shifter keys.

I've got the similar garbage Spicer 3974 gearbox. Trouble with the Bentonite grease, it doesn't wick into those shift fingers. Whatever you put in there, it's still gonna be a wet-hot mess. My opinion is it should've been designed for gear oil. I'm tapping a fill hole and putting in 20w-50 oil. Pray I don't have to do tear down.

Having a similar issue. I really don’t want to take apart the transaxle… my STX38 is stuck in 4th and 5th.

That was interesting!, thanks for posting it. I've wondered what it looked like inside there. I found one of these yesterday for free, I don't know what's wrong with it yet, don't even have a key yet.

And TY for the very good video. Wish I had had it on the one I tore down. All I had was an exploded parts diagram from Sears. And I still remember what a certified beyotch it was to learn on! 😮😮😮

Hey, Blake. I have a Sears rider with a Dana Spicer 6 - speed transaxle. Stuck in 1st gear. Afraid to try and force the shifter. I have had 3 such transmissions in this rider, and they ALL had the same issue. I repaired one, replaced 2. On the 3rd now. WTH is the problem with moisture condensing inside these things. Any way to prevent it? Any other transmission that is less susceptible. (*Note: my rider sits outside but well double-tarped.) HELP? 😮😮😮

Wrong grease. Most of these transmissions use bentonite grease, which totally incompatible with white lithium grease.

I have the same transmission from a John Deere 240 it still shifts in all gears it can just be hard to get them into the gears. It had sat a long time so I'm thinking it's more of a problem with the shifter itself. Any thoughts? Clutch is working btw won't shift at all if I don't use clutch

+Cody Bryant - Mine Water got in and rusted a bit and the Grease that is in there become gummy. So I used Gasoline + Paint Brush and clean it all out. After that, I went to Walmart and bought *Super Tech Marine Lithium Grease Walmart (14oz Tube) + Super Tech Multi-Duty Complex Hi-Temp Grease (14 oz Can)* - Mix it all together and dump it in there. I also make sure put *Extra* at the Shifting location and now it seem great so far.

Jordan Bronson I unfortunately broke mine putting it back together the housing was weak.

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 6 ปีที่แล้ว

+Cody Bryant - OMG, that sucks :( - Check on Craig's List, sometimes it's cheaper to get a similar Trans with Mower, then take the Trans off for replacement. Leave it aside for parts and stuff. NOTE: When putting back together.... They sit a certain way or you will crack the Housing :/

    • @JodBronson

+Cody Bryant - Maybe for next time.... Pay attention to the *Bushing* since they sit a certain way.

Yeah I tried putting together the right way like 20 times just put the bolts in and it poped. I plan on getting another mower with the trans but the mower i have is like a first gen yellow deck and the trans was the first gen

Worst thing to do is wrestle with those pulley nuts by hand. Use an impact gun

Admire your not being afraid to tackle this problem BUT you should have done more research. Information is readily available! #1 The part you broke is there for a reason and should have been replaced. #2 NEVER use white lithium grease inside these transmissions,

@@JodBronson When the lithium grease heats up it will thin out, this lack of viscosity will allow metal components to wear at an accelerated rate as the lubrication will not remain where needed.. Bentonite grease is like clay, stiff and dense and will coat all surfaces without thinning.

  • @Slotcartires

Bad choice of grease. Should have read up on the subject.

Too many ads. Like im watchin tv, very painfull to watch too. You should never just grind anything off of a transmission. If its there its supposed to be.
