Where can I get a repair manual for a hydro gear transmission 355-2400? I have one to repair and would like a manual that has the torque specs and rebuild procedure. Thanks
cool hydros same size motors as commercials. I have a cub cadet tank which was a very early 2006 version of these hudros - the gears as it has a separate case for that. These are sweet. Btw my 14 yeard old mower with 1500 hours hydros are still working. Change that oil and them filters.
Definitely the best how too video on TH-cam. For anyone doing this I found that the perfect thing to pull those seals out is just a little 1 gallon paint can opener.
Spot on bud! Excellent tutorial on the ZT-2800 hydro. Very Well explained, and a very good video to boot. Been into to many of these over the years, hard to believe at times alotta dealers won’t repair these anymore! Throw it away and buy new. Crazy! Anytime I can cob these of junk mowers it’s well worth the time especially when parts cost what they do anymore. Just got done with one of these ZT units out of a hustler Fast Track. By- pass shaft busted in half. Great job! And take care!
My former boss mentioned these units having a filtration system of them, ours are John Deere. Glad he is so observant and really is into small equipment like this. He saved my employer big bucks servicing this.
I hit a small stump and my forward control stopped working but the left side control always sounded louder than the right when it turned now its highly noticeable....Thanks for the vid ....It gave me the confidence to attempt the repair instead of spending $1,000.00 in repairs
Never mind man I figured out what I did. I ended up purchasing a new cover or cap for the pump and its twice as thick its heavy duty big time but I put it all together and Boom it didn't work so I remembered what you said about the cover being on the wrong way so I flipped it around and it started working really awesome! It was sucking the oil from the reservoir tank faster than I could pour it in. Thanks for the video it helped.
how can you reuse those rubber caps after you poked a hole in them to get them out and did you get a rebuild kit to replace all the other seals. thanks
@@shultz1a1look at the threaded “check plugs” they’re actually called shock valves. Found one cracked on mine. 16:00 where he takes them out of center section
Great Video, I had an Ikon XD zero turn that went underwater in the recent Hurricane Milton. Somehow water got into the units, possibly from the breather. Mine are ZD EZT units but this video really helped me out. One very important point. I originally changed my oil with regular 20w50. NOOOOOO!!!! Didn't work, as it got hot it would start to fail. After swapping it out with Mobil 1 synthetic motorcycle oil which was SJ Rated, it worked fine. These units get hotter than a regular engine so regular 20w50 doesn't work. Better than store bought Mobil 1 synthetic, there are specific 20w50 oils on Amazon that are API SL rated and are specific for hydrostatic transmissions. If I were to do again I would have ordered the specific oil from Amazon.
I watched this video as a guide to take my drive apart. It would not go forward or reverse and I figured that I might as well try because it's totally screwed at this point. Well I have not found anything wrong inside. I was hoping that I had a loose valve like you did but both of mine were tight. I have not taken them apart to see if there is anything wrong but from what I see they are fine. My drive has the polished areas from the piston blocks and like yours I can't feel any grooves. Right now I'm at a loss as to why my drive wasn't working.
Mr. DoubleWide6, thank you for this excellent brake down and repair. Learned so much that I have the confidence to repair my failed Troy-Bult 50" Zero Turn. I'm hoping the repair is as simple as a loose check valve, but, if additional parts are needed, I appreciate the sharing of your part source. I have invested far too much in this old ZT mower. To have the transmission go was a huge let down. Discovering your TH-cam channel has breathed new life into my project with the hope that a DIY repair can be done for short money and not a $1500+ new transmission. BTW, where did you obtain the repair manual and exploded views of the assembly?
How many of these have you worked on to achieve your level of competence, expertise and easy manner? When parts begin falling out of something, my heart rate goes up accordingly, when springs jump everywhere, I get nauseated. You make it look easy - which I'm sure it is not. Great job and THANKS!!! PS: Since you had unit taken apart, surprised you didn't go ahead and replace the power input shaft bearing (6203 bearing) unless they never wear out. Comments?
Thanks I worked in a hydraulic and jacks , pumps and a machine shop and I rebuilt the jacks abd the speed reducers for belt lines and wheel units for mining equipment and the video is a very good one I also like the one of resurfacing the motors and housing and smoothing up the surfaces are great videos to help with the expensive world of having a little something on a poor mans budget thank you for your help and taking your time. 👍🏻
It bypass's the transaxxle preventing the tires spinning.... Located on the rear, L shaped rods with a safety clip....pull both bypass rods outward....if your facing your rear of mower, look down on both sides and they be right there kinda close to tires ......
Watched your video and it was very informative but the camera did not pickup how the by pass pin goes on the center section for install. Could you inform me how the pin goes on the center section?
I have this exact mower with a 60" deck. The transaxle is leaking bad. Now the left axle is surging on a grade. Maybe air in the system? I will rebuild both this winter.
Very informative! Thank you! I have a Worldlawn mower with 3200 trans in it. The reverse on the right side gradually got worse over this past mowing season and during my last mow of the season, it quit all of a sudden. I'm hoping that its the same issue as yours.
FANTASTIC VIDEO. I have a "little" seepage between the case and case cover. Do you think it is possible to drain the oil and remove the case cover to reseal it without removing the entire transaxle?
That looks fun. I'm going to look for a junker so I can bring it back to life. Excellent video. You clearly know what you're doing. BTW, I came here after watching you sand down the hydro component which was very satisfying. I like learning stuff like this for some reason.
You did a great job. Ive worked for transmission shops for quite awhile and just bought my first zero turn. Im not feeling too nervous about it going bad on me in the future thanks to your video. Also, if you use "Right Stuff" rtv you wont have to wait overnight to add the fluid. It cures VERY quickly. We use it in the shop for this reason. It also bonds very well to metal surfaces to the point that it cant be peeled off. It needs to be ground off with a wiz wheel. Its not cheap but well worth the price. Great Video!
Love these videos. It gives more and more unqualified people the confidence to remove, open, botch, and then very quickly sell their broken transmissions to unknowing buyers as good useable units.
Thank you very much. Best video I've seen yet of a Trans tear down and repair. Very much appreciated. Keep making content like this. Have a blessed day
Excellent instructional video! I really enjoyed it. I didn't fast forward at all. Now it's my turn to take one apart in order to repair the leak it has. I have a 36" Hustler Fastrak Commercial mower with ZT-3100s.
I don’t know if you check the comments on a post this old I hope so. I have a ZT 2800. It failed on one side. I took it apart and found the center section completely destroyed. The motor block springs broke into pieces and ruined center section. I replaced it and the piston blocks. Put it together and ran like a champ for 5 minutes now it does nothing what could I have done wrong?
I'm sure it's hard to film the more in depth jobs due to being tedious and getting it done right. Filming is distracting and you don't want that when doing something as time consuming and precise as this job, especially when you only want to do it once lol
I enjoy watching your videos. When you were referring to the bypass, is that actually called the dump valve? I've been trying to get the Skag back to moving in the neutral position if you will. I finally found the correct brake adjustment rod after being sent the dump valve rod twice now. After I gave Skag the length of the rod it's finally on it way. I changed the oil in the hydro's and the filter and oil seemed as though they have not been changed since 2006. I had to take the old screwdriver for some extra leverage on one of them. Anyway, so when I was making sure there was no air in system I noticed the left side hydro kept moving when its supposed to be in the neutral position. I have not looked the reason behind it up yet.
interesting how it works. But cost wise, how much difference in this somewhat complex repair vs simple replacement? Also no lock tight on check valve nut? The loose nut was a manufacturing defect.
Thanks for the video it is very helpful. I have a question, the service manual and parts manual indicates the check valves are different item 24 and 25 and there’s not a part number for them. One of mine had a bad o-ring. I didn’t see or hear if you mentioned that they are different. If not different great but then where would I find a replacement valve or o-ring?
Doublewide6, just a quick question I have a Ariens Sport Zoom 1232 zero turn riding mower using the Hydro Gear transmission mfg. 2003. I did the rebuild the right unit. All when well with the reassembly, but dummy me left off the internal "Oil filter" cover. I made the discovery after it was all together. I did the process to purge the air out after a couple of cycles it still will not pressurize to turn the wheel shaft.. My question leaving off the internal oil filter cover cause it not to purge out the air in the casing?? Appreciate your comments. Thanks,
My valve screw assembly is stripped. I have tried searching for a replacement and haven't had any luck. Do you have a part number or resource I can search.
Nice work, Bob. I have a question maybe you can answer. I had to replace the bypass rod seal and did it with the unit on the machine. No big deal. I put it back in like you showed, c-clip on and lever but now that unit does not work. So... my question is when you pull the bypass rod out, can that little piece that you held in with grease when you were putting it back together get lost? It's just weird that there's no pressure. TIA, Joe
That is an excellent video. I gave up doing the bigger stuff a few years ago and really enjoyed seeing you complete this job. Thanks for the great video's.
Nice to see you got it fixed. I have a Bad Boy identical and can’t figure out an issue I’m having trying to engage the blades, the pro clutch engages but the engine bogs down and dies. I have to try 3-4 times and feather the clutch off and on real quick to keep the motor running until I can finally get the blades turning. After that it runs fine.
I never did figure out the cause but it has got better over time. Right before my problem started I had pulley go bad so I replaced it. In the process I cleaned and repacked all the spindle bearings and greased them really GOOD. I'm wondering if I overdid it with the grease and the added weight in the spindles was causing the problem. I can engage the blades now and don't seem to have the problem with it killing the engine.
my left side does not move front or back, but when I lift it up off the ground, then it moves front and back, do you have any idea's what it could be? thanks
I know im necroing this from a few years ago, but i got one of these for pretty much free and the one part I cant source is the stupid retainer cam stop for the brake lever shaft. I noticed you didnt have one on yours. i assume its to help support the aluminum on the cover. let me know what you do in that situation and have you ever had to makeshift that part. Thanks!
Great video, thanks for taking the time to make and post it. I have a Kubota with ZT-2800s but after 6 years of service they are still running like new. Greetings from Australia.
Hey I got a new seal kit for ZT-2800 Hydro-gear trans and the seals in the charge pump now have 2 rubber rings but the new ones have 3 rings on the rubber. Do you know if its a design upgrade or have you heard anything or read it anywhere? I bought a kit because someone put the wrong o-ring in it and it leaks but it was working fine now after a new o-ring it barley moves at all on jacks stands I did notice you said to be careful how you put the cap back on. If you have any knowledge on those O-rings/seals let me know. Thanks and BTW great video!!!
Great video I don’t have any issues with my mower but if I ever do won’t be hesitant to tackle that job, have done many Chrysler 727 transmission modifications for my 1/4 mile cars.
Hello. My hustler FASTRAK left drive started to get sketchy today... It feel like it's "sticking" at times.. And it doesnt want to glide back in forth easily like the other side. Any ideas??
My compliments and much thanks for a very well produced video and beautifully explained process. I'm about to dive into a similar operation on a Jazee Country Clipper and will do so with far more confidence in being able to pull it off now that I've watched you do a couple. Cheers.
Aircraft Mechanic> Did you know that snap-rings should only be installed with the sharp-edged side toward the direction of removal. When stamped out there is a sharp-edged side (the down side when stamped ) AND THE ROUNDED EDGED side ( the side the stamp strikes).
What precautions did you take to prevent this reoccurrence? Also, I was hoping to see you change the oil in the transmission, I have never done mine and it's 21 years old. Thanks for the info.
Someone in another YT asked if the different trans levels were interchangeable, I'm assuming in bolt mount locations? Are any identical in mounting points??
@@REVNUMANEWBERN if memory serves me correctly some of mounting holes would line up across the different product lines. Otherwise I would assume the units aren't interchangeable.
Does anyone know if the 2 check valves are supposed to rattle? I tore this whole thing apart and can't find anything worn, broke or otherwise. I swear, it took long to those 2 tubes out than it did to get to that point.
Can this happen the other way around like with reverse being faulty instead of forward? Thank you in advance. My MZ48 has only done 24 hours and has this issue with reverse.
I have that exact mower, 2008 26 ZT pro and I have had nothing but trouble with it. I bought it with around 50hours on it and at 100 hours, all the spindles went out, at 200 hours the charge pumps started to leak and I replaced those and the spindles again and deck wheels. At 300 hours the Briggs 26hp engine started getting really hard to start, and now at 400 hours, the left Hydro will not work at all. I only use it for my property, so 4 hours per week during the Summer and change the oil every year. I bought a 2020 Hustler X One yesterday 60inch 27hp kawasaki. I'm going to sell the Bad Boy after I replace the Hydro on it.
Great trips for another’s hack job trying to fix something and actually making it worse. Would have been hard to catch the problem caused by another inability to rebuild this unit without this video!
I have a craftsman Z6000 with a hydro gear transaxle. One side works fine but the right side doesn’t move. It won’t move in gear or when bypassed. What do you think the problem is?
Good video. Internal leakage main killer of ZTR transmissions. What is methodology for re-lapping the aluminum housing casting at its machined interface with the piston revolver cylinder? (The cast iron revolver can be lapped against 600 grit Emory paper on a glass pane in figure 8 pattern.)
Man nice video. I love learning something new wish I would of kept my old one to redo. Vid I seen before replaced the old center on a cub $200 then, more now I bet and all I needed was sandpaper thx for the rebuild
I have I think the 3400 pumps on a 2014 Hustler Raptor sv 60 inch and both of mine sometimes seem to go into neutral, more when going up hill. Mower only has 200 hrs and has been serviced every 100 hrs changed fluid and filters. Could mine be the check valves also? Was that a common problem? Or do I need to look into something else. Fluid that came out was always clean no shavings or anything.
Hi I need help how do I get the menu? I have the ZT 3100 please help me figure out how to fix the transmission, I have opened the transmission already but I don’t know the name or number of the part. The sprinkle is broken in there and I’m not sure how to fix it. I need the menu to see what the name and number is called do you know how to get the menu. I recently bought it from someone and I have watched this video but I don’t have the same one as you. thank you. I wait for you help me
Great job, Bob. It looks scary, but if you take your time, keep track of all the bits and kibbles and have a schematic to use as a guide it's easy enough and at $800 per side new, definitely worth the time to fix it yourself. Did you have to buy any new parts? It looks like you were able to save everything and just repair that valve. Bad Boys are pretty popular in my area, too. Thanks, Bud!!
I didn't find this video until I put the unit back together and on the mower. The problem I had came back. Those valves will be the issue because that's the only thing I didn't check. Time to do it again.
I have a 2017 badboy 54inches MZ Maverick. The left transaxle is very slow. Sometimes it will not move. It has the same problem in forward and reverse. Should I replace the same thing you did? Or should I replace something else?
Hi i have a question i have a Husqvarna and i noticed that when i mow on a uphill the right side transmission quits working and i have to leave it to cool off do you think that replacing the oil will help? This only happens on hills on level ground works perfect
Great video man. I have a question. What would make the wheel and axle move in and out? It just stopped moving one day just in one side and when I jacked it up the wheel I can move in and out. Is it repairable or do I need another transmission?
I have a Snapper 355z and the left hydro gear went south (leaking and finally quit moving). The right side is available but I can't seem to find the left side. Do you rebuild these units if I take it iut and send it to you? The number for this unit is 5101027 zk-kmee-3l7c-1ylx. The sealkit # is 5101026x8. Thanks in advance.

I have to try 3-4 times and feather the clutch off and on real quick to keep the motor running until I can finally get the blades turning. After that it runs fine.
i have the same problem did you get yours fixed?
I never did figure out the cause but it has got better over time. Right before my problem started I had pulley go bad so I replaced it. In the process I cleaned and repacked all the spindle bearings and greased them really GOOD. I'm wondering if I overdid it with the grease and the added weight in the spindles was causing the problem. I can engage the blades now and don't seem to have the problem with it killing the engine.

Main power jet.??
my left side does not move front or back, but when I lift it up off the ground, then it moves front and back, do you have any idea's what it could be? thanks
Use the pulley belt to loosen and tighten the pulley nut.
Yes, and use the vise grips to hold the belt closed around the pulley. A fuel line hose will also work.
Thanks!
Can u put the seal under ur fan on top with in in the mower?
Great video, thanks for taking the time to make and post it. I have a Kubota with ZT-2800s but after 6 years of service they are still running like new. Greetings from Australia.
How do I remove the Fan pulley shaft? I put nut in vice and beat on it. It won't budge.
Is there any seal by the bypass arm?
Hey I got a new seal kit for ZT-2800 Hydro-gear trans and the seals in the charge pump now have 2 rubber rings but the new ones have 3 rings on the rubber. Do you know if its a design upgrade or have you heard anything or read it anywhere? I bought a kit because someone put the wrong o-ring in it and it leaks but it was working fine now after a new o-ring it barley moves at all on jacks stands I did notice you said to be careful how you put the cap back on. If you have any knowledge on those O-rings/seals let me know. Thanks and BTW great video!!!
Best to take it to the shop for this project
Great video! Brought back alot of memories of my days at hydrogear putting those beasts together!
So did your job move off shore??
@@REVNUMANEWBERNnope...i found work elsewhere!
What would the torque be on the case cover bolts?
Someone in another YT asked if the different trans levels were interchangeable, I'm assuming in bolt mount locations? Are any identical in mounting points??
@@REVNUMANEWBERN if memory serves me correctly some of mounting holes would line up across the different product lines. Otherwise I would assume the units aren't interchangeable.
Great job my friend, I am looking at Zero Turn mowers getting a feel for these hydrostatic transmissions.
Does anyone know if the 2 check valves are supposed to rattle? I tore this whole thing apart and can't find anything worn, broke or otherwise.
I swear, it took long to those 2 tubes out than it did to get to that point.
Bob, that is one of the best videos I’ve ever watched.
Lindsay Spotts Welcome to the club I met someone today at the garage sale that knew me from TH-cam it’s a small world after all.
Was it not moving forward at all, mine acts like the brake is locked up it will go forward but ack like its under a load maybe.
were did you get parts and what did you order, got one that looks just like that one
I am having trouble getting part numbers were can I look
Enjoyed the video and the presentation. You're an excellent mechanic and do (high) quality work. Thank you!
Terrif presentation! Thank you for your hard work on this one!
Can this happen the other way around like with reverse being faulty instead of forward? Thank you in advance. My MZ48 has only done 24 hours and has this issue with reverse.
I cant get the pulley and fan off. I have tried gear pullers didnt work. Any suggestions?
Great video, excellent detailed assembly.
What do you do when the pulley won’t come off of the shaft??
Great trips for another’s hack job trying to fix something and actually making it worse. Would have been hard to catch the problem caused by another inability to rebuild this unit without this video!
I have a craftsman Z6000 with a hydro gear transaxle. One side works fine but the right side doesn’t move. It won’t move in gear or when bypassed. What do you think the problem is?
Is that center section model-specific (e.g. "ZL-GPEE-...") or can it be used for any ZT-2800 or ZT-3100?
There are 20 different part numbers just for the zt2800 - zt3200 so you need to look it up properly.
Hydraulics changed the earths surface worldwide. If it cost more, must be the best.
Or one can wrap a flat object such as a wetstone with the emory paper and use that to lap the surface.
Can not find parts for ZM-KEEE-5LEG-3ALX goes on commercial 44 inch gravely
I have a Question
I have a Cub Cadet RZT-50, it will not move forward but it will move in reverse. What will cause this.
Watch this video to find out.
How many pieces did you have left over ? Im lucky if i can keep it to a single digit number.
I recently bought it from someone and I have watched this video but I don’t have the same one as you. thank you. I wait for you help me
@doublewide6 Where can I order a Repair Manual for my Gravely ZT 1434 (Specifically for the 00348000 Transaxle Pump)?
Or should I replace something else?
why does my brake relief not relive. Both wheels do not relive so I can roll it by hand.
You just saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank you
Hi i have a question i have a Husqvarna and i noticed that when i mow on a uphill the right side transmission quits working and i have to leave it to cool off do you think that replacing the oil will help? This only happens on hills on level ground works perfect
Can lip seal on bypass rod, top of unit be replaced w/o splitting case?
You are one heck of a mechanic, great job!
Great video man. I have a question. What would make the wheel and axle move in and out? It just stopped moving one day just in one side and when I jacked it up the wheel I can move in and out. Is it repairable or do I need another transmission?
how many hours had you done , before you had any problems? thanx
Thanks in advance.
where do you get all your torque spec's from?
