Mischievous Happenings in the Music World | Chitravina Ravikiran, Prof G Desiraju, Dr Ranjani Vasuki

- Notwithstanding the mischiefs of the Madras Music Academy in terms of sidelining top class musicians from the neighbouring states, the recent one announcing the Sangita Kalanidhi to TM Krishna has revealed a new nadir. This has led to some bold decisions by stalwarts like Sri Chitraveena Ravikiran (Twiiter: @ravikiranmusic) returning the Sangita Kalanidhi back to the Academy. T M Krishna is a symptom of a larger malaise.
In this brief chat we get his personal perspectives along with the viewpoints of Dr. Ranjani Vasuki, another performing vocalist of high repute, Prof. Desiraju (@gautamdesiraju) a connoisseur of classical music who himself denied accepting the Bhatnagar Award some 30 years back. We also talk about the issues that are currently experienced in the art arena.
The panel is moderated by Prof V Ramanathan (Twitter: @vraman16), a Rasika himself, who has critiqued the first book written by T. M. Krishna.
Chitraveena Ravikiran @ravikiranmusic who returned his Sangita Kalanidhi award to the Madras Music Academy with this statement: "I’ve taken this step after careful consideration as principles much larger than all of us are at stake. However I’ll always remain deeply grateful to the org for its role in my career from childhood."

Thanks for an excellent and substantive discussion on the murky undertones of the current churn in the Carnatic music community of artists ( practitioners) and rasikas. Dr Desiraju rightly questions the implication of the unusually early announcement of the Sangeeta Kalanidhi award this year, to coincide with the national elections, as well as the presence of Mr. Stalin, a politician, at a Music Academy function last year. His candid point about an artist serving as a "useful idiot" is right on target. One also wonders if there is a leftist/woke nexus between the The Hindu ( and its pro DMK posture) and the current leadership of Music Academy. The goal of attacking sanatana dharma through classical music is quite apparent.
Ms. Ranjani Vasuki pertinently questions whether social activism has become the "new norm" for recognition to musicians. She also rightly points out that new students of music are never questioned about their community but only on whether they can keep their focus on the practice.
Mr. Ravikiran spoke about the very important concern of misleading young musicians into the woke agenda of social activism and its damaging effect on the real focus on music. It was also very interesting to know of his own work in taking music to the rural areas and the practical issues, including the number of years that it takes to identify and hone such talent. He rightly questions the value of those who merely talk of taking Carnatic music to a wider society, and those who have actively worked towards it.
So why was just one artist like TM Krishna 'recognized' for his views ( vs. real work) in this regard? In another program, the Trichur Brothers also wondered why they are not given a free column in The Hindu ( just like TM Krishna is). In other words, there is an eco system that is trying to cause insidious divisions within the Carnatic music community.

The press article by academy describing the award's reason says, "... using carnatic music as a tool for social reforms..."

There is an inherent issue of conflict of interest: The family of the founder awarding its own family member the award.
The award has been earlier denied to controversial musicians but has been pushed under the carpet this time.

The President should resign and a new selection committee consisting of senior eminent musicians and rasikas as members should be entrusted with the task of carrying on the Academy's music promotional activities.

Please note that these musicians have no unity among themselves, like the Hindus. They bitch about others behind their backs and their egos are insatiable. Under this what do you expect. Some of the senior musicians have a stranglehold on Sabha Secretaries and they use their power, though, this has diminished in the past decade to a great extent. If they were a united lot things could have been better. It's time they started thinking about fellow musicians, too and the coming generation.

Santhanagopalan has been selected for the award for 2020 while veteran mridangam guru Tiruvarur Baktavatsalam for 2021 and violin maestros Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and his sister GJR Vijayalakshmi for 2022) and it was announced in May 22, 2022. Last year (2023) was to Bombay Jayashree was on March 19, 2023.

Saint Thyagaraajaa. Reason he sang a song in praise of one E V R who took out a procession with a portrait of
Lord Ram with garland of chappals and slapping the portrait with chappals and this man abused Sita Matha with obscene remarks calling Devi a prostitute. Does this man deserve the award ? He has become a blot on on his illustrious family.

K Veeramani, who perhaps is the Guru of "TMK"
Veenai Dhanammal died 1938 just years after the award was instituted. Those who were bestowed with awards from 1928 in the initial years were legends and stalwarts like
Mysore Vasudeva chariar, Tiger Varadha chariar, Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhaghavathar, Umayalpuram Swaminathan, Tanjore Ponniah Pillai ( famous Tanjore Quartet,). Veenai Dhanammal died in 1938. However her grand daughters redoubtable
Brindha and Muktha received the award in 1970s.
We agree. TM Krishnan should not bring caste politics into music and talk whatever he likes. In India not only Carnatic music even Hindustani music has God as central theme and even muslims sing songs on Krishna and other Hindu gods. Krishnan is the only intellectual to find fault with accepted norms of music. That is his rusted mind. He is deneaning Indian culture even in foreign platforms. He is more an activist than a musician now. We recommend award for best activist award from Tamilnadu government.

Many important points are brought out very well by panelists. Musicality without spirituality is like decorating the dead corpse. It takes lot of dedication and sacrifice to learn and propogate this art form for which we owe to our ancestors and present day musicians. Any art, sports, science or literary field where we see the exclusivity and the attitude of sitting on ivory tower without including genuine students will risk decline sooner or later. This deters talented individuals and drives them to different pastures. Feeling one upmanship just because I belong to certain region, speak certain language or I have certain skill will only harm. Some clean up needs to happen in any organization time to time to remove politics, ego etc.

Apart from the artistes the members of the Academy should get the Management Committee voted out and bring back the original pristine glory of the Academy. The influx of the Leftists and non- believers of God have caused this burning issue. I will also blame the musicians as they desperately need Kalanidhi and hence compromise on their real ideals. It stinks.

The utter viciousness of the coordinated attack on TMK in this season of unprincipled BJP politics says everything about the pollution off Carnatic music by a toxic, supremacist ideology which despite its overt religiosity, has neither sublimated the minds of the attackers nor removed the venom from their tongues . To see performers like Sudha Ragunathan, Ranjani and Gayatri leading the attack on a fellow senior artiste is not only most disillusioning but has exposed them as political functionaries...as skimmed milk masquerading as cream., their made-up bhava before the microphone merely a prop used for effects. Their inability to separate the opinions of TMK, however disconcerting, from the quality of his music and immense contribution to the field , is most disappointing. Why the Rasikas have not boycotted T M Krishna?.It is houseful even after TMK controversy Chitraveena Ravikiran is not blemishless.He was named in metwo controversy.Since 2018 Ravikiran is not featured in Music Academy season.Just last month TM Krishna's concert at Bangalore Gayana Samaja arranged by Srirama Lalitha Kala Mandira was houseful.If Rasikas continue to throng TMK concerts then Why the fellow musicians are protesting on being conferred Sangeethakalanidhi award.
That is because TMK has spoken ill about MMA for 10+ years calling it an upper class dominated society. He also did not perform for the same reason
Why is so much importance being given T.M.Krishna and the Music Academy. If we feel so strongly about Krishna being awarded Sangita Kalanidhi , let's boycott both. The choice is ours.

When some of the wrestlers,academicians, padma award winners returned their awards protesting against Centre's wrong policies and mishandling of Brij Bhushan, Farmers protest, they were criticised by people but the same people are supporting the actions of some musicians returning the awards. Similarly those who supported wrestlers action are now criticising the actions of musicians. Every issue is politicised and given caste colour. Tolerance level is diminishing day by day.
Carnatic Music is purely based on bhakthi and samrpan, the dirty man tm Krishna who praises about periyar and try to walk with music path, he is thinking that he is a hero and saviour of music, tm Krishna even talk bad about MS subbulakshmi amma who dedicated her whole life for music
