I honestly can't stand movies like Sharknado that are intentionally bad. "So bad it's good" only really works for me when it feels like filmmakers are genuinely thinking they're making a movie and miss the mark in every way, like "The Room" or Ed Wood's filmography.
almost every great director has used camp elements at one point or another. You'll be surprised how truly campy and purposely mucked up some of the most critically acclaimed movies in history are. Citizen Kane comes to mind- if I dare to be so tardy... To me tongue in cheek is the best form of humor. The awareness of the absurdity of oneself is the prescription to great comedy, and good health! Food for thought...
Thank god I'm not alone in this. I remember being part of a bad movie club that watched this and movies like it, and it pissed me off because half the fun of movies like The Room and Troll 2 are that they were trying to be GOOD. If the filmmakers are in on the joke what's the fucking point?
People need to stop with sharknado. A so bad it's good movie is, by definition, not self conscious. Sharknado is just bad on purpose. And that has absolutely no charm.
Yeah I don't really have much respect for Sharknado either. It's like the difference between someone accidentally slipping on some ice and someone saying "I'm going to go and slip on that ice". A failure isn't really very entertaining when it set out to fail from the start.

ODDBALL SOK However, there are funny scenes in the movie that the characters take seriously, such as when Camelot kills all the soldiers in the castle to save the ‘damsel’ in distress. That is the essence of campy humour, is it not?
Well my problem with Sharknado and movies like Fast and Furious is that they are too self aware that they are in a way parodying themselves. They think that they can get away with everything just because they are winking to the camera and therefore comes off insincere.
Yeah, "Sharknado" is bad on purpose. The "Fast and Furious" series is over-the-top yet consciously *not* sincere. They're different than So Bad, It's Good movies that are made *sincerely and earnestly* yet turn out genuinely turn out bad, like "The Room" or anything done by Steven Seagal in the last 15+ years.
I enjoyed Sharknado, not Fast and Furious. Sharknado is so absurdly "bad" that to an extent I feel even the winking at the camera is part of it. That they're self aware is also a joke. Syfy, which made Sharknado I think, has been making these B-Movies for a long time. There's many, every year. I remember watching Lake Placid, which is about a giant crocodile invading Maine. Most of these I remember weren't self aware, and the camp comes off as cringe. Its just not enjoyable. Maybe the later Sharknados have over done being self aware, but at least the first few I thought were really good. The insincerity of breaking the 4th wall is highlighted by the jarring switch to the serious tone every few seconds.
The main problem with F&F movies is that they look like vomit. I can barely watch this shit, the montage and camerawork is so terrible I can't look at it for more than a couple of minutes. Roland Deschain Well said. I think in the cases of Tarantino, Sorkin or Wes Anderson its like they are aware that they are writing a FILM but the characters are unaware, if that makes any sense...
I think Princess Bride is so good despite how corny some of it is because from the opening scene we know its a fairytail story. All the flair and the jokes and rhyming(anybody want a peanut?) Works because it fits the style we expect, making it epic instead of laughable. One of the best movies ever.
I think in some cases you're blurring camp and... absurd? The problem I have is that while the characters in these camp/bad movies take their situation totally seriously it's always painfully obvious that the film makers don't, which destroys everything for me. "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace", and I guess Wes Anderson's stuff seems to be different, because they embrace camp while still being very thoughtfully crafted. I'm not sure if there's such a close connection between camp and bad either. No one has every said "you have to see this Wes Anderson film, it's so bad it's good". Especially in Princess Bride the camp is part of it, down to the core, right? I haven't seen it since I was a kid but I distinctly remember it as a comedy that didn't take itself too seriously but was still well made. These things are fun, but they're not lazy, or cheap or lacking in talent like Sharknado is. There's a difference between embracing a cliche/trope and taking a shit on one.
You seem to misunderstand. So bad it’s good films are not usually considered guilty pleasures. Real guilty pleasures are hands down bad films which you still enjoy for some reason.

You have made me realize the vast majority of my favorite movies are full of camp. I already knew that was the case with videogames like Tropico or Fallout, but I had never noticed how prevalent it was in my favorite movies.
You do know that when you say that someone is your spirit animal, it's actually cultural appropriation... Right? That's not appreciation of native culture. It's bastardization of it.
Maybe I'm misssing something here but I dont agree with you at all. I wouldn't consider anything from Wes Anerson as so bad its good, and sharknado is too self aware to be one either, its simply pure trash. I think the connection you made between camp movies and so bad its good movies is a bit loose.
The video is about camp more so than so bad it's good. It's what makes those movies good but is also used by plenty of just good movies. So bad it's good
My favourite campy movie is Mortal Kombat. Good Lord I howled through it. It's a masterpiece of "so bad it's brilliant". I can't believe it wasn't intentional.
One of my favorite movies, Dr Strangelove, is a comedy, and although the jokes are pretty funny, the funniest part of it all is how seriously everything is treated
Mobutu Obama What I mean is that most people dismiss these bad movies as just shit but when you explain to them how great they are they just think you are pretentious
Well in my honest opinion. If movies are overacted and maybe have a comical badness about them they are still bad. "So bad that its good" usually just means to me "so bad that its somewhat funny... kinda... but not really". But if im missing something please feel free to enlighten me.I Aslong as your not pretentious about it. ;p
Mobutu Obama What I mean is when i talk to other people about The Room they don't find it funny and just think it's shit but there is definitely something special about The Room other than just that its funny. It's the film's pure sincerity and intent on being great that is so funny and the film has genuine heart beyond its awfulness. However many of these type of films are just quite funny and that's it but the Room is special
Jake MacDonagh i shall watch it after work tomorrow and see for myself because it can be hard to describe the essence which makes a movie great. "something special" is kinda vague imo.
The anime and manga series 'Jojo's Bizarre Adventures' is also a great example of camp used really well. The characters take everything seriously but there are always crazy and bizarre things happening to them, making for some really hilarious and fun moments, which can also be really dramatic and tense at the same time.
A Nightmare On Elm Street series if a prime example of this imo. While everyone is busy freaking out or taking the deaths seriously, Freddy is spouting one-liners and pulling off crazy over the top kills seemingly every time he's onscreen. The sequels are pretty shit, but they're still incredibly fun to watch
Man, absolutely loved this, never would've thought of camp as a defining quality of SBIG movies, or the aspects of camp in other movies making them better. Great freaking video man!
Another point to consider when thinking about why people like these kind of movies is that it makes you analyze the good and the bad We have great films as examples, that we use as a reference because of the story and technique they present, but that’s also true with bad films We take the pros and cons, and we develop our sense of art by analyzing them.
There is a french word to describe a piece of art so bad that becomes good: "Nanar". That video talks more about it and can be complemented with yours: th-cam.com/video/pFlW49Fv9eY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Quetzal *note: is in Spanish.
note (from a french litt major): it's extremely outdated and familiar and used to also be used as jargon for "unsellable merchandise", it isn't a word that would come up in conversations :)
Uhm, actually it is quite a common word. I'm French and it's quite common to refer to a film as a "nanar". It pretty much boils down as a compliment for a bad, over-the-top movie that takes itself way too seriously and unexpectedly becomes hilarious. That's why The room is definitely a Nanar but sharknado is not, since it was purposely made as a caricature.
What makes that priest intro from Princess Bride so funny is the timing. The camera pushes on him from the beginning so we know he is going to be the center of attention. Then there's a slight pause that suggests he's going to be the one to speak now. At this point the anticipation has been built up and we expect him to talk like a normal person. When he speaks with his actual voice, the anticipation is broken and this twist makes us laugh. In the Room, there is no anticipation, build up or anything like that. It's horrible in possibly every way imaginable.
There's a similar juggle of duality, that with tongue-in-cheek and seriousness. The only difference is that while camp tends to be over-the-top and expressionistic, tongue-in-cheek tends to be a more subtle wink and a nod.
“When judging ‘so bad it’s good’ movies, many are content to stop there... *But one could go much deeper than that...* “Okay, I am listening. You now have earned 100% of my attention...
I mean, that's a thing too. There are good movies out there which take far too much pride in how clever they are to the point where it's actually irritating. That's what we call "pretentious". And then you have everything Mel Gibson has ever made which is trying to be pretentious, but usually ends up being camp instead. Basically, it's obvious that Gibson thinks his movies are the best thing since sliced bread, but they're objectively terrible (not to mention cringey).
Sophie Jones what did Mel Gibson do to you? He’s a great filmmaker. Braveheart is a fantastic movie, and Hacksaw Ridge is quite good too. The Passion off the Christ is incredible. I don’t think that he thinks he’s the best filmmaker ever at all
Thanks that you made the background music a bit quieter (or using a different track?) :) great clip again, didn't know so many of my favourites are camp
Wow! I never would have thought that The Room and Princess bride have similar elements, despite that The Room's 'camp' style was completely by accident and much worse. :)
For me there ist a differenz between camp and 'so bad that it's good'. Camp is done in purpose, requires skills and is on the point. 'So bad that it's good' is a funny accident because someone believed he had this skills and missed the point by far.
I would like to point out that this video does not discuss camp in its original context, that of LGBT subculture. Films like Rocky Horror or The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert do camp in ways that move beyond just being about tropes and self-awareness. They camp things like gender, which are not contained just within the film, but are far more real ideas. I think this misses out on the opportunity to historicize camp, and show the effect that minority communities can have on mass culture.
How are the Sharknado movies "so bad it's good" when everyone making the films are in on the joke. They know they are making a bad movie and that people will watch simply based in the title. Sharknado was made by The Asylum, which has made films like Snakes on a Train, the DaVinci treasure, 2 Transmorphers movies, AVH: Alien vs Hunter, Atlantic Rim, American Warships, Titanic 2, etc the list goes on. So many mockbusters. Why does Sharknado get so much attention when they also made Mega shark Vs Giant Octopus and Mega shark vs Crocosaurus and 2 headed Shark attack. I wish ppl would stop giving it credit as so bad it's good, when it was intentionally bad. A film which could be argued for "it's so bad it's good" is Birdemic 2. Most actors and crew were in on the joke, but James Nguyen still thinks he is making a movie to rival Hitchcock's The Birds. "They look good from a distance." Lol Other than that, I agree, good video.
Or The Room. Films that are campy but good embrace the genre and the tropes affectionately, with a hint of self-awareness and irony. Films that are just intentionally bad like Sharknado are made by people who embrace the over-the-top nature of the film without being affectionate about it. Films that everyone, except the director/creator, knows is really bad, but the director still takes seriously, like The Room, is when they try to make a great film in the most sincere way, but just fail, because they make it so over-the-top without embracing it, without understanding that it is in fact over-the-top, without self-awareness of its campy nature.
I like Sharknado because it is just so much fun. It says to the audience "You wanna see some over the top shit? Then let me show you!" It's not so bad it's good, it's just ridiculously over the top and that's what's great about it.
Two of my favorite Schwartzenegger movies are probably his campiest (well, besides Hercules in New York or Pumping Iron): Commando and Last Action Hero. Commando is just so over-the-top in its action sequences and one-liners that it gets silly early and often. Last Action Hero is more in the vein of hanging a lampshade on every action movie trope.
You missed the point. The video's not only about enjoying movies that are so bad they're good, but about critically acclaimed movies (Princess Bride, Grand Budapest Hotel) that use techniques found in "so bad they're good movies" and pulls it off.
I actually made my comment before watching the video. I actual like the point he is trying to make but he showed a little too much Sharknado, which isn't a bad it's good movie.
I recently thought about this in the context of pirates of the caribbean! It masters the fine line between the vomedic and the reality for epicness imo

When he speaks with his actual voice, the anticipation is broken and this twist makes us laugh. In the Room, there is no anticipation, build up or anything like that. It's horrible in possibly every way imaginable.

You fool, you fell victim to one of the classic blunders
Hahahahaha got me!!
There's a similar juggle of duality, that with tongue-in-cheek and seriousness. The only difference is that while camp tends to be over-the-top and expressionistic, tongue-in-cheek tends to be a more subtle wink and a nod.
Most bad movies: Boring, but competent
So Bad, they're Good: Neither
“When judging ‘so bad it’s good’ movies, many are content to stop there... *But one could go much deeper than that...* “Okay, I am listening. You now have earned 100% of my attention...
Uh... so what you're saying is the best movies have camp. What does that have to do with bad movies?
So basically camp is when a movie does something silly/unrealistic but in the movie's world, it's normal
It's ok Tommy, we know you did not hit her, send my regards to Mark.
Spider man by Sam Raimi its the perfect example of a fun, sometimes camy but heartfelt and sincere movie.
That good looking vampire looks very familiar.....
*_"It's so good that its bad"_*
Shouldn't it be the other way around?
I don’t think that he thinks he’s the best filmmaker ever at all
Thanks that you made the background music a bit quieter (or using a different track?) :) great clip again, didn't know so many of my favourites are camp
i heard princess bride
Wow! I never would have thought that The Room and Princess bride have similar elements, despite that The Room's 'camp' style was completely by accident and much worse. :)
What's that Wes Anderson movie with the 2 boys?
Rushmore
I think he means for Moonrise kingdom
The one where the one boy was standing in front of the infirmary
Yes that is moonrise kingdom
Cam M. Okay thank you
As a MCU fan, this make soooooo much sense about loving the movies and thinking it's not dark or serious.
UR TEARIN ME APAAT LIZA
I’m shocked you didn’t mention Sam Raimi, the king of incorporating camp in serious movies without it feeling out of place.
NOW i see it
Dont forget about the likes of the wes craven & John carpenter alot of those directors Perfected these type of crafts that you're talking about!
Anyone else more exited for The Disaster Artist then The Last Jedi?
Jeff I'm excited for both.
THAN THAN THAN THAN THAN
I did not know about The Disaster Artist, but now I'm really excited
EXCITED, NOT EXITED
Oh yeah, I'm really *E X I T E D* for the Disaster Artist.
This is my favorite cinema analysis channel
Hahaha
What a video, Now You See It
Daniel Bushell Anyway how's your sex life?
Hahaha. What a story Mark.
For me there ist a differenz between camp and 'so bad that it's good'. Camp is done in purpose, requires skills and is on the point. 'So bad that it's good' is a funny accident because someone believed he had this skills and missed the point by far.
No Evil Dead 2 reference???!!!!!!
"Camp is letting movies, B movies".. very nice ;)
The comment I was looking for (^:
Well said!
“devastatingly rewatchable” is camp
"They look good from a distance." Lol
Other than that, I agree, good video.
Living Shitpost Exactly! It knows it is campy.
Birdemic 2 is also self-aware.
Asylum is a fitting name for that company cuz anyone who makes this junk should be omitted to one 😄
Camp? A great example of camp is the Raimi Spider-Man films. I love those, camp and all.
7:03 "It's so good that it's bad." Toy Story 2 0/10 IGN.
I love watching your videos every time a new one comes out
List of films please?!
Juce 1. Darude Sandstorm
"Movies that still take themselves seriously"
He says while playing the rocky horror picture show.
The entire film is a joke!
Yeah, I didn't get that juxtaposition at all.
can you list all the background movies? I need to watch some of these!
Aye I've missed your uploads
YO ONLY 17 LIKES WTF
18 now ;)
Great video :) youtube ads seem to be working, too; The Disaster Artist was my commercial :)
Great video! Anyway, how is your sex life?
Not great since Sarah deceased. I fell like I do all the work.
Thank you for putting more content in you vids......missed that so much.
How come you didn't mention any of the Edgar Wright movies, who also uses "campy" techniques to make scenes more enjoyable.
I always forget about your campy exit music. Love this channel.
i take it back. this is not even a nice attempt. this is a terrible attempt. you're way off.
Definitely your best essay in a while! Insightful stuff, mate.
The later sharknados weren’t even funny-bad because they were trying to be bad and the cast/director were trying to be in on the joke
Finally!! A name for these types of movies. I love em all
Napoleon Dynamite, anyone?
Best fricking movie ever! Always and forever!
His uncle is the cringiest character ive ever saw. hahahah
I think the movie Fargo would also be a great example of 'camp'. One of my favorite movies.
Well I over slept. I never got in to so bad its good movies.
Before The Credits same.
Stufftough the fuck
Stufftough - uh
He's back! With another banger of a video. Seriously, your videos keep me going.
Yup, demolition man, so bad its good, batman v superman, so bad its just horrible
I recently thought about this in the context of pirates of the caribbean! It masters the fine line between the vomedic and the reality for epicness imo
Black Dynamite
halcyondaystunes Haha I love that one
Yes!
You brought back Summertime for the outro.
Sleep away camp.
