The movie is divided into three perspectives. How is it a different perspective of each person when the dialogue was the same. From the point of view of the characters, every conversation and event should have been different, as nobody remembers the exact words and every character processes information differently. The Last Duel I think was released at the wrong time. It came out the week after the release of No Time To Die and the week prior to the release of Dune at a time where I’m sure people were limiting their trips to cinemas because of COVID.
Best part about Alexander was Rosario Dawson's... uhm... acting skills. The Greatest Showman is my shit, the songs are fiiiiire. AND The Last Duel was super well done 🔥Slept on fersure.
It really sucks for The Last Duel, because this movie deserved more than the reception it got. I saw it in theatre and it was impressive. I hope, with time, that people will realized that this movie is great. The story is particularly interesting on how certain events are perceived differently. The fights scenes are scary as hell. I also really enjoyed Anthropoid. I wouldn't have nominated for an Oscar. But, it was extremely intense.
The problem is the last two events are exactly the same with only a minor attitude change, whereas in real life the guy proclaimed his innocence the entire time and was only convicted because of something someone else did.
@@Denis-89 The soundtracks with songs from a movie are meant to be listened to. The movies, TV and Broadway shows that happen to be musicals are meant to be watched.

Men of Honor, which came out in 2000 had all the hallmarks of being an Oscar bait film. It had Cuba Gooding Jr (fresh off his Oscar nod from Jerry McGuire a few years back) in it playing a navy diver, it was based on a true story and tried to be an inspirational story with a lot of serious and dramatic acting involved.
If they had actually focused on the real story it was based on and not added the white savior trope that did not exist in the real story that DeNiro played I think the movie would have fared better.
@@squarebear619 I don’t know back then no one cared and even expected the white savior role in movies. Shit green book won best picture like 2 or 3 years ago using that trope and Sandra bullock got best actor using it in the blindside in 2010 or around then
And if I watched it (and I am reculent(I don't really wanna) to),it would REALLY hurt my heart to see autism discrimination before my very eyes. Note to self: Enough with the brackets already.
I go back and rewatch Alexander every few years or so and it's really grown on me. Yes, the acting isn't great, but the cinematography is unreal and it's the only film I can think of that portrays ancient warfare correctly onscreen. It was truly brutal and horrific, also major props to Oliver Stone for using real freakin elephants in the battle sequences.
@@mainstreetsaint36 I agree, the ultimate cut was great. The scenes of Alexander and his army chasing Darius through Bactria were great cinematographic sequences.
@Neo is the one Troy came out around the same time and it was equally as bad. I guess Hollywood thought that since Gladiator did well, these movies will do well too..NOT!!
Why did I genuinely get scared when Taylor swift yelled WIDE AWAKE . Cats could've been a great horror similar to midsommar If only it wasn't a musical
Anthropoid was one of the most underrated war movies of the last decade. Suprised it was on this list. Great acting. Important story to tell. Murphy really showcases his reach in this performance.
I thought The Greatest Showman was awesome. I really liked the music, characters, and Hugh Jackman as PT Barnum. It’s not a perfect movie, but it is a fun watch
For the record, while the film itself was bad in EVERY conceivable way, it was actually more Sia consulting the hate group Autism Speaks as " research" and suggesting that Autistic actors who could have easily played the roles just "weren't very good" that REALLY rubbed salt into the unnecessary wounds she created. And her 'apology' was about as real as a vegetarian lion.
Even more absurd, she consulted with Autism Speaks AFTER she completed the film. Same goes with Communication First. Sia wanted to get endorsements from them for the film. Both organizations condemned the film.
@@monkeydude9192 It had JUST come out and Zemeckis could have thrown his weight behind giving it a wider release instead of fluffing his fetish for uncanny CGI. This is the man who gave us Used Cars, one of the funniest flicks of its decade.
The Last Duel was a victim of the pandemic and theaters still not being open everywhere. I love that movie and its a shame that it didn't get any recognition.
Not just that but it was late October and opened the same week as Halloween Kills which took the majority of the audience. Had it opened in November or December it probably would have fared better.
The Last Duel deserve all recognition it holds a great story, acting and a lot of technical aspects well made, but unfortunetly we live in a generation that want super-hero movies and no good films.
Correct, off a 108 million dollar budget not including marketing worldwide which also costs millions. Fifty shades of grey, same year, grossed over 500 million off a 40 million budget. One had Ridley Scott and the other some novel based off twilight fan fiction. What's your point?
Every time I hear the words "Oscar Bait", I always think of two films right off the bat. "Nuts" with Barbra Streisand and "Cake" with Jennifer Aniston. Seems like these two ladies were angling to be nominated for Best Actress in their prospective years.
The 2006 remake of All The King's Men, starring Sean Penn, Jude Law, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Hopkins, Kate Winslet and James Gandolfini. The 1949 original won Best Picture and is a classic. The remake is just good actors hamming it up with blustery Southern accents.
Wait, they remade All the King's Men? I'm still reeling at having watched this video and discovered they remade Rebecca - the original is one of my all time favourites. Both of those are fabulous films (and both Best Picture winners) that still hold up really well today. AtKM's message is also still so relevant to modern day politics that it shouldn't need a do-over.
I love the last duel, should have been given more attention. Also why are so many of these movies from the last 10 years. Oscar bait movies have been around for along time so if your list is titled “of all time” you should be more considerate of your selections.
It was weird when Ridley Scott blamed millennials for the film's failure, though. It really didn't help that it just happened to come out around the time and just after films like Shang-Chi and Halloween Kills, which isn't Scott's fault but rather the fault of the studio and the marketing teams.
I also enjoyed the Last Duel. Unfortunately it was released in middle of COVID-19 and there were still restrictions in some places. I also want to point out that the oldest film on the list is Alexander which came out in 2004.
@@tootzy-the-roll it was known about, even in places without theatre restrictions. It was more the appearance of another big star succumbing to the vanity project curse. @@cookscreativecorner yeah, he seems to be one of those baby boomers that thinks all everyone born after 2000 is a millenial (despite the fact that is a different generation), whereas many are in their late 30s or even in their 40s now now and were the perfect demographic for the film.
I thought Collateral Beauty, Welcome to Marwen, The Greatest Showman, and especially The Last Duel were all great films, with great casts, scores, visuals, stories, and direction. The Last Duel even became the first box-office flop I ever saw in theaters, and it was definitely worth breaking that streak to go and see it. I still think Jodie Comer and Harry Gregson-Williams should have been nominated for Best Actress and Best Original Score, respectively.
Collateral Beauty is so awful, Will Smith's friends gaslight him into thinking he's insane so they could put their hands on his company, and we're supposed to believe they care about him?
I would also add Ang Lee's "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk", Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate," Hugh Hudson's "Revolution," M. Night Shamaylan's "The Village" to this list.
"The Village" hinges on something you could have guessed from the moment Sigourney Weaver's character had the authority to speak to groups in the town, and I spent the rest of the movie asking myself one question - that M. Night himself answers in the last five minutes of the movie. I think there was a kernel of a better movie in there with or without the twist we were all expecting to find.
It's a shame the last duel didn't get the recognition that it deserved because in my opinion it's a pretty well crafted movie that had some big names behind it as well I don't know if it's Oscar worthy or anything because honestly I don't care about that kind of stuff but I think what hurt it so much was that it was just released at a bad time in 2021 in the middle of the pandemic I'm hoping with time it'll get the recognition it deserves because I thought it was a pretty solid movie in my opinion
I didn't know a remake was done of Rebecca. I wish I still didn't. Rebecca (1940) directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine is a gothic classic better left alone. And Judith Anderson as Mrs. Danvers is unforgettable. This is one of my favorite movie's that I watch again and again. Remaking Rebecca is like if someone actually tried to remake Gone With the Wind. You (Hollywood) should know better than to mess with perfection.
The original Rebecca is my favourite noir film. And that's why I couldn't even entertain watching the remake, and then the Armie hammer stuff came out right after and that was it for that
It’s not a remake of the Hitchcock film. It’s a new movie based on the book. Sort of. The book is one of my all time favorites & it diverged in many significant way. As does the Hitchcock, but that was mostly due to the strict film codes where if someone commits a crime, they must be punished. I don’t like it, but I’ll forgive it. The new one made changes that were so out of character for the main character, it was ridiculous. Super fail.
I think Scorcese's run of oscar bait movies (Age of Innocence, Hugo, Silence, Aviator, even Gangs of New York) deserve a mention. I LOVE the guy, but he's definitely put some bait out there.
Frankly speaking, these aforementioned movies that Martin Scorsese made are even nominated at the Oscars. So, how it's even seen as Oscar bait, despite the fact that these movies are even nominated, anyhow?
As a director the biggest honor you could receive is an Oscar so most well known directors try to bait the critics into at least three or more Oscars before they call it quits.
The last duel was a great film. Definitely a victim of circumstances. I never saw " Music" , but I do have an autistic child, and what I have seen definitely seems to want everything at once . It seems like it has decent intentions , but I run the risk of walking away offended , rather than appreciative.
Absolutely. I used to at least watch the Oscars partially and definitely check out the major winners the day after. Now, I don't even now when the Oscars are presented, and I usually don't even know most of the nominated movies.
Which, ironically is kind of the theme of the movie too - that entertainers shouldn't worry too much about the opinions of "critics" or the "sophisticated elite", but simply put on a show because it's in them, and they love it. The movie was great and the soundtrack is next level! I feel like it might end up being one of those movies that ends up as a classic, but that didn't get the attention is should have when it was released, like It's a Wonderful Life, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Wizard of Oz.

I thought the last duel was quite good. It’s pretty slow, and I can understand why people might lose interest in it, but the final third of the movie is where it really shines.
The Greatest Showman got something so much better than Oscar awards. Heck, it even got something better than it's initial very strong box office run. It got notoriety. It is a legitimate modern classic that is beloved by many and likely will be rewatched and replayed for years. While many Best Picture winners are forgotten within a year, The Greatest Showman and its songs are probably the defining film musical of the past decade.
Anthropoid was honestly one of the greatest movies I’ve ever watched. Made me a big fan of Cillian Murphy’s acting. Absolutely loved it and rewatch it often.
Honorable mentions Boyhood, Tree of Life, I Heart Huckabees, Adam, Melancholia, Some Kind of Wonderful, Toys, the original Crash, the original Bad Lieutenant. Trying very hard for Oscar.
@@laumay7364 Some Kind of Wonderful, Crash, Adam, Bad Lieutenant, Melancholia didn't make the final cut because of its controversy and subject matter. But Tree of Life and I Heart Huckabees garnered a few Academy Award nominations and lost big time. Only Boyhood was nominated for 6 Oscars, including best picture and best director. But Patricia Arquette took home the award for best supporting actress in 2015.
@@WheresMyInhaler To make matters worse, "Tree of Life" was nominated for 3 Academy Awards, including best director and best picture in 2012. More than any other film in Disney's history.
*Detroit* . Arguably the most underrated film of 2017. Still shocked it wasn’t nominated for a few Oscars; especially since its historical setting, acting, cinematography along with Bigelow’s success with her previous two films (The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty) made it seem worthy of recognition at the Academy Awards.
It's important to also mention that Dune literally came out a week before The Last Duel so it was just unlucky timing as the advertising and hype for Dune was insane. The marketing for The Last Duel was atrocious. I wonder if Ridley Scott cared about the marketing aspect or not. Either way, a great movie and it's lack of popularity means nothing.
Anthropoid is suuuch a good movie! Never considered it as an Oscar bait, though. Just a solid war film about one of the most tragic events in Czech and Slovak history. I don't think it was meant to be a blockbuster or an action war movie. It was praised in Czech Republic for quite an accurate reconstruction of events. ( The Man with Iron Heart that came out roughly at the same time was criticized for not even been filmed in Prague among other things.) Murphy and Dornan both are excellent in Anthropoid. And supporting cast is wonderful.
Anthropoid is an excellent movie. Don't lack of Oscar buzz turn you off from giving it a view. Welcome to Marwen could not overcome its weirdness, but the cinematography and use of camera movements had a nostalgic feel for this child of the 1990s. I wish more modern films made use of its camera movements for visual storytelling and creating energy.
Music is like one of the worst movies that shows about autism in a bad horrid way. You're better off finding a better movie that tells about autism in a good, understanding way. I have seen TH-cam videos and Twitter posts about why Music is God awful and I truly understand it big time. Autism isn't a disease, it's a disability that many people have, including me.

@BroAnarchy Sia was repeatedly trying to justify why she made, lied when asked why she didn't cast someone on the spectrum when she said she did but the girl was non-verbal and wasn't happy on set (or the girl couldn't handle it I don't know which) and that was why she casted Maddie Ziegler as one of the main characters when she previously said numerous times that she doesn't want to do a project without Maddie and that she specifically came up with the role of Music with Maddie in mind as the character. All throughout the movie the girl is making faces and noises that come across as mocking someone with autism, Maddie was even afraid of this happening while filming and didn't want to do it but Sia got her to do it anyway and then Maddie was right. Also not autistic but I have worked with autistic children
"Lions For Lambs" was an atrocious movie. I remember seeing it in the theater and being thoroughly disappointed at how cheesy & manipulative it felt. On the other hand, the 2016 film "Lion" was really lovely. Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, and Nicole Kidman were all so, so good.
Real Oscar Bait movies are basically anything Bradley Cooper has done in the last 8 years (except for Guardians of the Galaxy). He is so desperate to win.
music wasn’t only insulting, it was dangerous by promoting prone restraint(lying on top of an autistic person having a meltdown), which is a LAST RESORT and has many times resulted in autistic people’s deaths
"Amsterdam" didn't earn back it's budget. The film shoot had to move location from Boston to L.A. at the height of Covid. Which added $30 million to the budget.
I was blown away from Tom Holland's performance in Cherry and was so disappointed that he didn't win a thing or even get any nominations from it. But I am sure, that Holland will someday find a role that brings him glory and recognition that he deserves. He is very talented actor.
Don’t Worry Darling anyone??? I feel like that was more desperate for an Oscar compared to Amsterdam & Babylon just because those would’ve only got nominations regardless of writing had there not been some unknown mass protest by cinema audiences to let writers of independent original works be heard out only to regret not seeing the Northman because it was an adaptation & giving RRR its only nomination for best song whilst Nope got snubbed in the process

The Greatest Showman was no underrated, for it was pure garbage and it was downright condemned.
And to this day, that movie has aged horribly.
And also Dear Evan Hansen was a misguided misfire of a mess.
@@ajpat9620 you hate musicals, don’t you?
music wasn’t only insulting, it was dangerous by promoting prone restraint(lying on top of an autistic person having a meltdown), which is a LAST RESORT and has many times resulted in autistic people’s deaths
And or the person or people who are restraining the person.
Why would they die from being held down?

More than them melting down?

Baz Luhrmann's Australia with Nicolas Kidman and Hugh Jackman !
Yet, that film ended scoring one nomination: for its costumes and that's it.
That film was cringingly embarressing to watch.
That was just the trailers.
Anthropoid was amazing. It was well researched, written, and acted.
I can’t believe they named a movie anthropoid, people would not buy a ticket just to avoid saying the name
The Last Duel was actually really enjoyable and still shows Ridley Scott can pull of a historical epic.
Surprised you didn’t say Cloud Atlas.
"Amsterdam" didn't earn back it's budget. The film shoot had to move location from Boston to L.A. at the height of Covid. Which added $30 million to the budget.
Thanks for your Top Ten . . . 🍿
It's a sci fi movie. That's Best Picture repellant.
