    So, a movie is allowed to be bad, but not allowed to be boring.

    • @ShatteredGlass916

      WJZAV the thing is, sometimes bad movies came in many different reasons, lack of resource, focus, or even incredibly huge cliffs between the movie's expectation and its budget, so sometimes u just can't help but just laugh at it (at least for me). Where as boring movies always associated with straight up lazy in almost everything (writting, CGI, actors, etc).
      The key here is how much u realized how much the movie is *trying* to reach its best potential. Oh and trust me, when u kinda guessed on whether or not the movie is trying or not, it'll change your perceptions of it (i think)

      I would argue that being boring is directly what makes a movie bad. Their primary purpose is to entertain, ostensibly.

    Ed Wood is an excellent example, because his ambition far outmatched his talent. He really wanted to create sprawling epics, and he really tried his best, but what we got is what we got and that's just magical.

    Basically, it's when a movie gets so laughably bad that it becomes an unintentional self-parody, not just of the genre of film but of making films altogether. It reminds us of the innate silliness of the concept of dressing up in costumes and playing pretend in front of a camera.

      I'm thinking good movies have compelling characters and events. Movies so bad they're good have something else that's compelling.
      I can think of one so-bad-it's-good movie in my life: Manos, the Hand of Fate. I haven't watched all of it; when watching clips from it, I'm engrossed in judging what they were trying to do in each shot and why the thing they actually did fails at that. Like when a character clumsily rolls down a hill, I'm like "wait, that was supposed to be a tense action shot?".
      So, extrapolating from a sample size of (less than) one, I think the thing that's compelling about so-bad-they're-good movies is (1) the way it makes you think about the movie making process; and (2) the difference between intention and actual result.
      As a result, most so-bad-they're-good movies fall into the category "unintentional comedy" and never "unintentional drama" or "unintentional horror" or anything like that: failure can be laughably bad, but never frighteningly bad.

      I think when they try to make it bad on purpose. Then to me the spell fall off. Because if its intentionally bad then i am not laughing because then i feel its so lack of effort to me. But if they try their best and fail, then to me its funny

      "So bad it's good" is a construct by critics.
      In reality, a bad movie is a boring movie. Nothing else. That's why it seems like a paradox. Critics have invented "so bad it's good" by thinking entertainment needs to be more than entertaining.

  • @Tricob1974
    @Tricob1974 9 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    When a bad movie succeeds in being entertaining through its own incompetence, it's because it delivers something unexpected to the viewer. The unexpected is what can make a movie entertaining, be the film good or bad. I will never call a laughably bad film a failure, since it succeeds in being entertaining, and entertainment is what films are all about. That's why we watch films in the first place. And OMG - are there a lot of hilariously bad movies I still plan to watch for the first time. :-)

    You raise a good point of what makes it so bad it's just bad versus what makes it so bad it's good. When a bad film looks competent and has good production values and good talent behind it, it makes it painful and hard to watch. However, when a film looks just incompetent and they tried very hard, it's makes it more fun to watch. The key word is competence. The more incompetent the bad film is, the more fun I have watching it.

    As someone who can spend hours watching the TV with friends/family just to make fun of literally whatever's on screen, I can posit that something's so good it's bad when it's easy to make fun of it. Some movies are just bad and boring, you really have nothing to mock, nothing to criticize, any gag you try to make is just as boring as the movie (the young and the restless). But some films are pure treasures in which every second has something worth pointing out (The room).

    What makes a good movie and a so bad it's good movie is essentially the same thing: a compelling story. The difference is that with a good movie the story is the immersive world of the film, but with a so bad it's good movie it's the story of how the movie was made. The boom's in shot? We know that's something the filmmakers would have liked to have avoided, so all of a sudden we understand a story encapsulating motivation and comic failure.

    I would have to say one movie i resontly watched that in the end i enjoyed. Even if it was down right terrible was the western movie "In a Valley of Violence".
    To put it in the most simple of terms. This movie pays homage to alot of old style westerns from across the years. That at times it worked very well in the film. But then there were parts that just made you cring, laugh, or feel plain disgust. It was this mess that kept me and my family watching for some morbid reason. To see if this train wreck got better. Suprisingly it was never boring. Just weird.

    i like the first Star Trek film and there is a better directors cut with improved effects.People wanted Star wars but Star Trek is not Star Wars and it shouldnt be.The fly by the reffited Enterprise was very emotional when i saw it at the cinema as i grew up with the tv show.There are some beautiful music themes as well as the iconic main theme and the warp drive effects just blew me away.Many of those effects still look amazing and some were re used in the sequels.I think after Star Wars people were hoping for a whole bunch of space battles and it could have done with at least one good one but i still love it and its way better than the one where they meet not god

    I always find it hilarious when people get so angry at movies like Transformers. All Michael Bay was trying to do was a big, dumb action flick and it's one of the biggest, dumbest ones you'll ever see so I would argue that the film succeeds at what it does very, very well. Likewise, all Shaymalan tried to do with The Last Airbender was condense the tv series' plot to movie length and as a fan of the show I thought he pulled it off better than he's given credit for considering just how much plot he had to trim down. All that said, whether you like a film or not has nothing to do with whether it's good or bad. I love movies like Howard The Duck and Super Mario Bros., but I have no illusions about what it is I'm enjoying. Conversely, I can recognize that a film like Titanic is well-made in many respects but that one just didn't do it for me.

      Shyamalan's TLA isn't bad for the story. The movie is bad because of horrible acting (maybe with the exceptions of Iroh and Zhao), shitty direction, uninspired bending animations, and only partially for missing key parts of the story (like The Storm, The Winter Solstice, and The Deserter, all arguably some of the more important episodes of the season)

    For me I think it’s easier for a movie to be so bad it’s good when that’s not what it was originally trying to be, have you ever noticed that the majority of the big staples of so bad it’s good movies are ones that were trying to be legit good attempts at the genre like Troll 2 trying to be an actual scary horror movie or The Room trying to be a real emotional drama? And movies that are actively trying to be so bad it’s good like Sharktopus or Atlantic Rim aren’t? Because believe it or not, most of the charm of so bad it’s good movies *does* come from the fact that it was unintentional, because when you’re actually focusing on trying to be so bad it’s good it inadvertently gets in the way of that, so I think the secret to getting a so bad it’s good movie is being a legit but ultimately botched attempt at making a good movie, not purposely trying to make a bad one

  • @CommacazyFreak
    @CommacazyFreak 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this helped me realize why I dislike the concept of so bad it's good. And honestly, it's not because I dislike the bad movies themselves, it's when the directors of those bad movies continue to bank on the movie being bad and continue pushing them out because people enjoyed how bad the film was and that in turn makes me want to show less support for it. In recent years the one that does that the most is Sharknado, I remember some of my friends getting into the series because of it being "So bad it's good" and that's what made me dislike the concept especially with a movie that's clearly trying so hard to be bad which is what I actually dislike, a movie trying to be bad in an attempt to get the people who want to like the film ironically to like it, especially when after that they release sequel after sequel.

    • @VicenteTorresAliasVits
      @VicenteTorresAliasVits 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, I think they were doing that with the first SHARKNADO as well.

    • @CommacazyFreak
      @CommacazyFreak 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VicenteTorresAliasVits true, I just said that because on the one hand I'll never watch it so I can't truly gauge it one way or the other, and on the other it's in the air about whether or not that's truly how they felt about it when they were making it, I'm not a mind reader and maybe they just decided to roll with it once viewers started seeing it in that way.
