CRASH TEST Pickup Trucks - Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier

  • The 2017 Toyota Tacoma crew cab, which Toyota calls the Double Cab, was the top performer in the small overlap test. The Tacoma crew cab earns a good rating, with good individual ratings for structure, restraints and kinematics, and all injury measures but the lower leg and foot, in which it earns acceptable. The Tacoma crew cab is the only small pickup to earn a good rating for structure in the small overlap test. Results for the extended cab, which Toyota calls the Access Cab, were similar, with the exception of an acceptable rating for structure due to some additional occupant compartment intrusion. Toyota re-engineered the Tacoma for the 2016 model year.
    / @youcartv
    The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab and its GMC Canyon Crew Cab twin also earn good ratings for occupant protection in a small overlap front crash. The Colorado and Canyon extended cabs earn an acceptable rating.
    The Colorado and Canyon were redesigned for the 2015 model year after a two-year absence from the market. Beginning with the 2017 model year, the A-pillar, lower door-hinge pillar and door sill were reinforced to improve protection in small overlap front crashes. The crew cabs’ structure and safety cage largely resisted intrusion and preserved survival space for the driver in the small overlap test. In the extended-cab tests, there was more intrusion into the driver footwell area, contributing to a poor rating for lower leg and foot protection, compared with a good lower leg and foot rating for the crew cabs.
    Both the 2017 Nissan Frontier King Cab and the Frontier Crew Cab earn marginal ratings. The Frontiers are the oldest designs in this group of small pickups, with no structural changes since the 2005 model year. Beginning with 2017 models built after February, Nissan lengthened the side curtain airbags on the Frontiers to improve protection for people in small overlap front crashes. The side curtain airbag protected the dummy’s head from contact with side structure and outside objects in both the crew- and extended-cab tests. The Frontier’s structure, however, allowed considerable intrusion into the occupant compartment, compromising driver survival space. The footwell was pushed back toward the dummy’s legs nearly 17 inches in the crew-cab test and 14 inches in the extended-cab test. In a real-world crash like this, the driver would likely sustain serious injuries to the lower legs and left foot.
    The Frontiers earn good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side and roof strength test and acceptable ratings for head restraints. The extended-cab versions of the Colorado and Canyon earn good ratings in the moderate overlap front, roof strength and head restraint evaluations and acceptable ratings in the side test.
    ► These results are valid only for models sold in the USA

    The Tacoma bed shifts in another direction, which I think is genius design on Toyota. Since all the rear end weight isn't focused into the cabin and stays intact. Look at the interior slow motion shots of the A pillar and you'll see that Toyota is the only one that holds its shape. Even when the 3rd Gen chassis is still unchanged from the 2nd gen, it's still considered good in today's standards. Great job!

    I wonder if adjusting your seat back some could reduce the injuries sustained by your legs and feet in a crash? Or, if in most applicable crashes, being seatbelted in, the momentum is too great for the seat settings, and the distance you travel forward is instead limited by your seat belt, not the seat.

      @@HR-rt9nh Lol more like observe just how much safety in a crash was not a concern at the time. Seriously, crumple zones were not really a thing back then, unless you count the cabin as a crumple zone. Vehicles back then were not safe and would ensure you would feel every bit of whatever it is you hit or whatever hit you which, as you can guess, isn't a good thing. If you look up crash tests of old vehicles to even a relatively modern vehicle, there is a huge difference.

    Looks like the chevy did the best. It didn't have the rapid change in speed and 90 degree change in direction like the Toyota did. I do like the knee air bag on the Toyota though.

    • @EGGINFOOLS
      @EGGINFOOLS 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      While I don't think that would be the case in this overlap crash test, I do agree that those air bags are nice there. It's definetly a plus to have them. No other truck had them

    • @chadd3207
      @chadd3207 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      EGGINFOOLS I agree. I'd be curious as to how high the negitive G's were in the Toyota and Nissan, both have a much more violent forward movement on the occupants and seats than the Chevrolet, as well as more vehicle movement like you stated. The Nissan shoves the wheel right up through the foot well at 3:18 and 3:31 that would shatter the occupants left leg and the dash prob even breaks the right leg. Also, look how the front end stays mostly intact on the Colo compared to the Taco which was ripped clean off at 5:35 and the tweaked frame at cab/bed at 6:07, again high neg. G's. The Good rating for the Toyota should be Marginal like the Nissan. A false perception of current quality for Toyota, still resting on their laurels from the 80's and early 90's.
      Key takeaway, the better built Chevy truck is absorbing more of the impact for the occupants.

      The chevy is a piece. Notice how it's bed crushed the cab from behind , and wheel cut in half and disintegrated

    • @chadd3207
      @chadd3207 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      lukestoyz You want the wheels to break away not come back through the firewall into the footwell like the Nissan did. The cast aluminum wheels are designed to break on impact.
      Notice how the weak Taco frame bends and pushes the bed several inches out.

      Antoine Zogbi foot well collapsed, driver would have a broken leg no doubt.

  • @rhfuh
    @rhfuh 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    The Toyota has the highest ranking because it by far had the least penetration into the cab. You look at the amount of damage to the windshield and dash movement and you see that. Iihs weigh that heavily since that's what leads to broken legs and people pinned in cars. The ideal way a car can crash is to have everything but the driver area fall apart and to have it fall apart over the longest period of time. And the taco does just that.

    Tacoma fell apart like legos

    • @e.e9331
      @e.e9331 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      If it falls apart like that in the event of a crash, its a good sign. It means the energy of the impact is being distributed everywhere on the truck thus reducing the impact energy absorption on the driver and its passengers.

    • @e.e9331
      @e.e9331 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Also, Tacoma bed shifts in another direction, which is a genius design by Toyota. Since all the rear end weight isn't focused into the cabin and stays intact. Look at the interior slow motion shots of the A pillar and you'll see that Toyota is the only one that holds its shape.

    • @rokitman5753
      @rokitman5753 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      go to where some dude gets a million miles on his Toyota, Toyota buys it back and completly tear it down so they can continue to improve their pickups. You must be a child with out a coloring book : (

    • @TheKep
      @TheKep 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      E24 Schark um the Tacoma’s lifted off the ground when they hit the wall that is a bad sign that means the energy is traveling linearly through the truck thus lifting the rear end off the ground. Notice the Chevy didn’t jump in the back the frame under the bed on those is designed to bend under stress caused by crashes so the shock can be transmitted through the frame and not your spine
