I've never understood the discussion around the price point. In my eyes, it's perfect and thankfully low enough to make sense. It's the exact price of the DualSense Edge, just replacing the extra controller features with a screen. That's literally it.
People are feeding too much into comparing it to handheld consoles when it’s never been advertised as that. 200 dollars is completely fine. I never thought to even question the price

The people that don't understand the value of this device is mind blowing to me. The Backbone is $100... This is a full dual sense and a 8" tablet put together.. just the hardware itself makes this over $150... The convenience of not having to have two separate devices is also a major selling point... A person doesn't have to grab an iPad and a controller.. in order to make this a reality. It's just 1 device with 1 simplistic purpose.
This thing is tailor made for parents. I can’t wait to finally get use of my PS5 whenever my kids are watching TV. Remote play solutions are super clunky. This is easy to pop in and out. Looking forward to getting mine tomorrow.

It's all about perspective. To me it's like wasting 200 bucks because it doesn't do anything that the Dualsense 5 (which you already own as you need a ps5) combined with a phone, tablet or laptop (which, let's be honest, you likely already have too) can do. You're paying 200 to have the luxury of....not needing to put your tablet on a surface. What value!

Keep in mind that - yes you can get a switch for a competitive price. But a lot of their first party games never go on sale. So you’ll be coughing up full priced games that are 5 years or older. This is in contrast to Sony titles that are of exceptional quality and regularly go on sale. If you’re buying a Portal, you’re buying it for the remote play experience and the library of existing ps5 games you currently have.
Also keep in mind for 150 dollars more, you can get a Steam Deck that can run games natively, can stream your PS5 games, can play PS games natively, play Xbox and PC games natively, have full backwards compatibility, plus it's obviously a computer. Not to mention you can't even play the PS Portal on public WiFi. If you REALLY want a bang for your buck, you'd know the Portal is a waste of money.
planning to get it this year waiting for some updates to be made on the device first; my situation is opposite: I live with my parents who watch lots of TV on the LG C2, so while I have decent gaming time on it, I would like to extend it further with the Portal.
I visit my parents a bunch and want to spend time with them but also not miss out on my gaming at the same time! Perfect device for me. I hope they get rid of some input lag for Fortnite and cod. So excited to see how it runs, love the design of it!
I remote play on my iPad and it’s a very shotty experience. Using a backbone is probably slightly better and recommend that for a cheaper alternative but there’s still a ton of drawbacks. At least this is from Sony and they didn’t charge $300 for it lol. Just wish you could stream more to it
Samme.. im very short on time so not able to actually watch these reviews fully.. am wondering.. if im across the globe from my ps5 buttt have good wifo, will i come across amy type of lag ??
@@faizlmujadidi8021 I haven’t tried remote play further than in the states, haven’t had much of an issue. Most input lag I’ve seen is actually Bluetoothing to an iOS device. I’d imagine you might encounter more delay than if you were a couple hours from home by a second or 2. You can Ethernet directly into your console and do some other things that are supposed to help tho.
I have a backbone but upgrading to one of these to free up my phone. If you are remote playing with a phone and you get a call or need to reply to a text, switching out of the remote play app drops the connection and have to go through a process to get back in. So this device will free up the phone and be dedicated for remote play when I cannot be upstairs playing the console. It is nice to hear that it is comfortable to use and play. The Switch is a bit small for my hands.
How does it perform compared to a conventional remote play setup? I tried my iPad Pro and a Dualsense for remote play outside of the house, and it was decent for certain games like Spider-Man but not so much for SF6 with lag being more apparent.
I think you're going to have the same sort of issues - the more twitchy the game i.e SF6, MW3, the more obvious the delay is. But it is noticeably better than through mobile in my experience, and single player games like Control felt almost identical to playing on PS5 - Aaron
Ppl did the vita so dirty in 2011-2013. We need a ps vita the size of a steam deck. Still with vita styling and color schemes, an upgraded but familiar bubble icon layout, that can play ps5 games digital, but also has developers who want to make touch screen games! If that dropped in 2028 it would sell like crazy
The connection between ps5 and portal doubts me so much. Considering that i have same issue if you are using ipad or phone, i have a hard time connecting to ps5 remotely even if i have good wifi connection.
Nice one man, mine's coming tomorrow, really looking forward to it. Totally accept it's just a second screen, so I will likely not take it away from home, like I would the 'Deck or Switch; though I'm curious to see how well it works over a 5G connection in the middle of nowhere! I'm very relieved it has a 3.5mm jack.
While I’d love to agree with you about it being crappy that it doesn’t support Bluetooth headphones, there’s a real and great reason why… audio latency suuuuucks. And everyone would complain all day. I’ve seen it happen all day with products like Genki and even the Nintendo switch with their recently added functionality. Bt sucks for gaming.
I really wish you could stream movies and shows from this thing. I dont have a tablet, so this device wouldve been an easy purchase for me if it was more of a media consumption device.
Hi, I currently have a steelseries arctis nova 7 dedicated for playstation. I connect a USB C adapter to my console and the sound works fine. Will it be the same in PS Portal? Did you tested? :)
Can you use it as a second controller to play couch coop on TV? I have a feeling the answer is no but that's the biggest missed opportunity for me here
@@jeffcarrier9808I wouldn't think Sony would put a BAD display on their handheld. And while I've heard similar endorsements of monitors and find it not be true myself, OLED has some benefits beyond how it looks. Input delay and pixel response time are two things that really benefit games. And with the lag introduced by the wireless connection, you'd want to stomp it everywhere else.
I have to think that toggle is either a legal requirement to be able to bring it on airplanes, or just something Sony added to make the menu screen fill the screen more lol. It serves no other purpose.
Sony is going for the mass market like Apple does make it simple so everyone can play it if your a tech person who likes to tweak things then this may not be for you. For me i like simple and when i get mines tomorrow i will love it and use it often because i like to move around my house
In my case when trying to play remotely(phone), console has never gone from rest mode to turned on. Also drift is fixable but i share your concern. Just got a pink dualsense fixed. IF i get this one is for playing from bed. 😅
Ill be honest, this review made me rethink the portal. I thought it was going to be garbage too but im surprised at the positive press its been getting. Kind of wish i hadnt just bought a backbone.
Can you connect a second controller to the PS5 while using this? (In other words, can I leave my TV on and play couch co-op games with this as my primary controller?)
If you can help clear something up for me it'd be much appreciated. Does your Internet connection affect latency when playing games offline; i.e.: single player games? I don't really see why you'd even need an Internet connection for offline gaming if everything should be constrained to a local wireless network.
Wait, you’re saying if you have an iPad and controller this might not be worth it?! I do have those and a backbone. This improves the lag compared with the backbone connection, includes amazing haptic feedback and way better ergonomic grips (best in market), a nice screen that is housed as a single unit that can be played while laying down. All these add significant value over other products on market, especially for dads like me. Super excited for what this brings. I think this review undersells it a bit and makes incompatible comparisons (this cannot be compared to an iPad remote play setup at all!)
My first thought; but hey they might not get it. I have a nice 2 tb oled ipad; but i want to be able to watch Premier league games on that while playing my other devices. Now i can play ps5 while that is propped up on the bed next to me.
I see everyone saying this about the no Bluetooth but it’s emitting an important thing here. If the device is connected via Bluetooth to your headset but you are streaming off of a PS5 through Wi-Fi than you are really messing with lag potential. The is a near zero chance that through Bluetooth and the portal the audio and gameplay will be synced up. The play link this while annoying is a way to bridge the gap and have the gameplay actually match what’s coming through on the device.
I don't like the idea of people comparing it to a Steam Deck. We're talking $200 to remote play vs something that is $679. It's a lot more difficult to drop an additional $479 if you're comparing the two. I'll give it to you on the Switch. But again, the Switch cannot play the same games as the Portal. So, if you are comparing the device WITHOUT the types of game, fine. But you said it, "Considering the types of games you want to play on it." TLoU, God of War, Horizon, Spider-man cannot be played on a Switch. I'd encourage people to review this item for what it does and not what you want it to do.
Exactly... it should be reviewed as a remote play device not a portable. Guys like this come off as children when they place their thoughts ahead of facts.
Yeah judging if Portal is worth the value then comparing it with a device over three times as much?? Plus Portal has a bigger screen and dual sense features.
For that price I would expect a device to have some standalone functionality. B&M sell an iPhone controller for £12.99 that provides an adequate remote play experience so it’s hard to justify £200 for a device that does only that. It might be a better experience with the adaptive triggers and haptics, but you could get that with a phone clip for a dualsense controller and you’d be able to use any headphones you want. Even if it had the capability to play PSP/Vita/PS1 games natively it might be worth the price, but not as it is now.
It felt way better than with remote play over with a mobile, but I still wouldn't recommend competitive online games like MW3. Slower multiplayer games like GTA would probably be fine, although I haven't tried that one myself - Aaron
I cant believe this doesnt support cloud play yet. Hope sony adds it because if they do itll change my opinion quite a bit to be able to access a larger game library remotely.
So the ps5 stays in rest mode when this is running or does it fully kick in like normal once the portal is running? Not a problem either way just curious. I'd assume it turns on properly as the fans heat sink etc need to be running at regular levels like nirmal to maintain temps as obviously the CPU/GPU are working full speed
It might sound silly but I’m looking to get this specifically to be able to play some Diablo IV away from the TV. Assuming good internet connection, how is the experience with that game on Portal? (Edited) I was typing this mid video where Diablo is mentioned bit further down. Happy to hear that portal is a perfect solution for Diablo IV
When I turn ps portal on the ps5 turns on when I put the ps5 in rest mode the portal and ps5 loses connection ?? Doesn’t make sense. My WiFi is top 5G fast so it’s not thr wifi.
Thanks Aaron, good review. As a way to sit with my wife whilst not watching her shows and play some games, I really like the Portal idea. I think I’m waiting to hear if it can ever ( I know right now not ) it can take streaming …. Either PS premium or Netflix
I would be ordering this right now if it wasn’t for the headphones situation. I think that was a really bad move because I already own 3 wireless and Bluetooth headphones and I’m not buying another pair for this. I hope they rethink this!
Since you are just controlling the PS5 via the Portal, you can put it into Rest Mode. If you turn it fully off though, you won't be able to reactivate it with the Portal again. You'll need to physically turn the PS5 on in person - Aaron

This is a waste of money.

If I was to use this it would be in the garden with my hands sweating with sun oil, do they sell screen protectors and stick covers?
How does it perform compared to a conventional remote play setup? I tried my iPad Pro and a Dualsense for remote play outside of the house, and it was decent for certain games like Spider-Man but not so much for SF6 with lag being more apparent.
I think you're going to have the same sort of issues - the more twitchy the game i.e SF6, MW3, the more obvious the delay is. But it is noticeably better than through mobile in my experience, and single player games like Control felt almost identical to playing on PS5 - Aaron
"It connects in a matter of seconds....*jump cuts*"
Surely if you’re streaming on your local network, your internet connection speed is irrelevant? Isn’t it dependent on the quality of your WiFi signal?
I got this coming tommorow think now I’ll be on this more than the ps5 myself even tho I live alone.
A PS Vita 2 with PS5 Remote Play and OLED is the dream
Ppl did the vita so dirty in 2011-2013.
We need a ps vita the size of a steam deck. Still with vita styling and color schemes, an upgraded but familiar bubble icon layout, that can play ps5 games digital, but also has developers who want to make touch screen games!
If that dropped in 2028 it would sell like crazy
@@notacloutchaser7407 Man, I wish! 🥲
The connection between ps5 and portal doubts me so much. Considering that i have same issue if you are using ipad or phone, i have a hard time connecting to ps5 remotely even if i have good wifi connection.
Apple is the worst product for remote play,I play at my cottage on 5g whit zfold4 whit no issues.
I’ve used my AirPods with the backbone, the audio lag is awful. Fully agree with your comment
I'm really surprised with that since the Vita has Bluetooth ability long ago.
It absolutely is! Can't wait for mine tomorrow! :)
you don't even have it , how can you tell already
@@revxnthhe is just excited let ‘em be 😂
@@revxnthprobably some kid doesn’t know what’s actually going on 😂
Lol you don’t have it yet but you’re making this claim. Your fanboy is showing..
@@SlimSkillz I was excited until I saw reviews saying an iPhone with remote play can outperform it , which is pointless
best review of this device ive seen so far, subscribing.
I really wish you could stream movies and shows from this thing.
I dont have a tablet, so this device wouldve been an easy purchase for me if it was more of a media consumption device.
Can’t wait till mine arrives tomorrow I have been super excited since the news first broke
Hi, I currently have a steelseries arctis nova 7 dedicated for playstation. I connect a USB C adapter to my console and the sound works fine. Will it be the same in PS Portal? Did you tested? :)
Can you use it as a second controller to play couch coop on TV? I have a feeling the answer is no but that's the biggest missed opportunity for me here
The screen not being OLED is a huge missed opportunity. I can't even call it the ultimate PS5 Remote Play experience for that reason.
They might change it to oled in future
Wait until you see it for yourself. I've seen people who mistaken it for OLED. Apparently it's an extremely high quality LCD.
@@Daybr3ak1991Cold comfort if you're looking to buy the currently existing model.
Not oled to keep costs down but I’ve heard many reviewers gush on how good the screen looks
Can we use a plug in Bluetooth adapter like the one we used to use on the switch
Sony be trolling us with the “airplane mode” lmao
I have to think that toggle is either a legal requirement to be able to bring it on airplanes, or just something Sony added to make the menu screen fill the screen more lol. It serves no other purpose.
Can I plug my PSVR2 into this & remote play VR in another room from my PS5?
Aren’t you locally connected when on the same network?
Sony is going for the mass market like Apple does make it simple so everyone can play it if your a tech person who likes to tweak things then this may not be for you. For me i like simple and when i get mines tomorrow i will love it and use it often because i like to move around my house
How is the latency compared to a phone running remote play?
In my case when trying to play remotely(phone), console has never gone from rest mode to turned on.
Also drift is fixable but i share your concern. Just got a pink dualsense fixed.
IF i get this one is for playing from bed. 😅
Great review! I’m really worried about stick drifting. Had two controllers with that and I dont even play that much tbh
Should have been designed like the Edge with removable thumb sticks, and stick drift is potentially putting me off investing in this product.
Cant wait. I strongly believe it will he patched in the future for cloud streaming.
Yes you can, although this will bring up the "Remote Play Connected" box at the top of the screen. Nothing major, but worth noting - Aaron
Yes! Been waiting for your review on this! !
Sorry it took so long! It was a big review, and I only got my hands on the unit on Friday. Anyway, hope you enjoy! - Aaron
If I have youtube and crunchyroll installed on my PS5, will those apps work on the Portal?
Does this support video out from the USB-C port? Or is it just a charge port?
I enjoyed the review
Is there any connection with psvr2?
Is the psvr2 line connected?
Can you remote everything via your PS5 or are there some games you aren't able to (e.g. PS3 titles)?
Feels like just yesterday a good chunk of the internet mocked the Wii U gamepad.
@@crymsonenigmaportal not portable, streaming only,I think people already know it.
Can you only buy this off the Sony site or can I find one at wal mart tomorrow?
For that price I would expect a device to have some standalone functionality. B&M sell an iPhone controller for £12.99 that provides an adequate remote play experience so it’s hard to justify £200 for a device that does only that. It might be a better experience with the adaptive triggers and haptics, but you could get that with a phone clip for a dualsense controller and you’d be able to use any headphones you want. Even if it had the capability to play PSP/Vita/PS1 games natively it might be worth the price, but not as it is now.
i like things that just work out of the box.. like psvr .. i have a desktop pc but i dont want to tweak settings and deal with crashes ect.
Getting this for baldurs gate 3
Can't wait for mine!
How does it handle playing games online via Remote Play, like CoD and GTA? Is it noticeably laggy?
It felt way better than with remote play over with a mobile, but I still wouldn't recommend competitive online games like MW3. Slower multiplayer games like GTA would probably be fine, although I haven't tried that one myself - Aaron
Got 2 coming this week 😊😊😊
I cant believe this doesnt support cloud play yet. Hope sony adds it because if they do itll change my opinion quite a bit to be able to access a larger game library remotely.
what's the point of the airplane mode?
So the ps5 stays in rest mode when this is running or does it fully kick in like normal once the portal is running? Not a problem either way just curious. I'd assume it turns on properly as the fans heat sink etc need to be running at regular levels like nirmal to maintain temps as obviously the CPU/GPU are working full speed
It turns on normally when you're connected. It has to be in rest mode to be activated via the Portal in the first place - Aaron
@@pushsquare thanks Aaron, how did you find the compression of the image ? Is it that noticeable?
Mine arrives today and I work from home. I think this might be a staple at my desk. Looks great
It might sound silly but I’m looking to get this specifically to be able to play some Diablo IV away from the TV. Assuming good internet connection, how is the experience with that game on Portal? (Edited) I was typing this mid video where Diablo is mentioned bit further down. Happy to hear that portal is a perfect solution for Diablo IV
Just wondering this might be a weird question but can you download any game on it
When I turn ps portal on the ps5 turns on when I put the ps5 in rest mode the portal and ps5 loses connection ?? Doesn’t make sense. My WiFi is top 5G fast so it’s not thr wifi.
what do i do if my x button stops working do it enter the portal?
Who made that intro beats? I need it!
Great honest review bro 😎👍🏻
Thanks Aaron, good review.
As a way to sit with my wife whilst not watching her shows and play some games, I really like the Portal idea.
I think I’m waiting to hear if it can ever ( I know right now not ) it can take streaming …. Either PS premium or Netflix
I caved in and ordered one. I'm a simp for Plastation products. Bought the edge controller which came in handy for FFXVI, bought the psvr2 for GT7.
Great review, watched 6 or 7 reviews and this one helped me decide whether im getting one, thanks for the info 👍
So, no? 😅
@@dazzaboy04 **insert meme of kid laughing sarcastically**
Can you use it from a different country?
I would be ordering this right now if it wasn’t for the headphones situation. I think that was a really bad move because I already own 3 wireless and Bluetooth headphones and I’m not buying another pair for this. I hope they rethink this!
There are adapters you can get to use your own buds. You just have to be in range of the console which might not be ideal.
I used my AirPods when playing the backbone and the audio lag is awful, that’s why bluetooth isn’t included
Doesn’t it have a 3.5 jack ?
@@jesusmelgoza5681Yes it does. People are just trying to find something to cry about.
Can you put the PS5 back in rest mode while using the PS Portal?
Since you are just controlling the PS5 via the Portal, you can put it into Rest Mode. If you turn it fully off though, you won't be able to reactivate it with the Portal again. You'll need to physically turn the PS5 on in person - Aaron
I do the same with an iPad and duel sense ,works perfectly
I have a bluetooth Headphone on the ps5 already playstations own too will that connect to the portal ? also can you use hotspot from phone ?
Nope, but if you close to your ps5, i think you can use your headphone just fine, cause the ps5 is on and running !
@freyalunar3633 I have beats that have plugin to go into the jack so that should be sound ?
mine is arriving tomorrow can it be charged with an iPad charger USBC or does it have to be plugged into the PS5 USBC to charge and can it be run off the mains by the USBC or does it have to be used with only the battery? would appreciate if you can get back to me soon as possible. Thank you 👍🏻
No it doesn't have to be plug into the ps5
Is the battery replaceable?
Yea this thing sounds great, I love my backbone but the screen on my iPhone 15 pro is so small. The 8" and controls look sweet. However it is impossible to get one of these, by the time I get on it will be Portal 2.
Wonder if this will be sold out forever like the ps5
So u only can play this if u have Wi-Fi and ps5 but it gotta be on rest mode ?
ps5 on rest mode so the portal can wake it up and run the game, you just stream the signal to your portal without the tv turn on
