「グラディウス」「悪魔城ドラキュラ」と並ぶコナミを代表するアクションシューティングゲーム。仕掛けられた罠をかい潜りながらレッドファルコンの各要塞を破壊してエイリアンの侵略を阻止するのが目的である。操作はレバーとショット･ジャンプの2ボタンとオーソドックスながら、レバー入力により上下にショットを撃つことができるといった、キャラクターのアクションが豊富である。また横スクロールの2Dステージ、縦スクロールによる3Dステージなどのテンポの良いゲーム展開で、多くのプレイヤーに支持されただけでなく、後に登場する同ジャンルの作品にも影響を与えることになった。ちなみに「魂斗羅」とは、燃えるような斗魂を生まれながらに持った、ゲリラ戦法の達人に与えられる呼び名である。
ストーリー:
西暦2633年12月、人類滅亡をたくらむレッドファルコンと名乗る侵入者がガルカ諸島を占拠し、今や前線基地となっていることが司令部側の極秘の調査で判明した。海兵隊所属の2人の「魂斗羅」ビル・ライザー上等兵とランス・ビーン上等兵は、直ちに全ての前線基地及びその中枢を壊滅せよと命令を受ける。

In 2631, a meteorite strikes the Galuga archipelago near New Zealand, carrying with it a dormant alien being. Two years later, a terrorist organization calling themselves Red Falcon takes over the island as part of their plot to invade the Earth. Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, of the Contra unit, are sent to the Oceania island to stop the evil threat.
'Contra' is a hectic one or two player platform shoot-em-up featuring 10 stages. In addition to the standard side-view levels, there are also "3D maze" stages in which the player must proceed through a series of corridors inside an enemy base, destroying various sensors, in order to reach the core of the base.
Each player's character is equipped with a semi-automatic machine gun with an unlimited amount of ammunition and can jump, move and fire in all eight cardinal directions. Players can also move and jump simultaneously while firing. Co-ordination of the character's movement is essential as a single hit from any enemy, bullet, or other hazard will instantly kill the player's character and also eliminate the current weapon from the player's inventory.

The laser gun: A total joke in the console games. An absolute beast in the Arcades.
For the most part definitely. What were the general categories of shooter weapons in most arcade shooters? (Standard pea-shooter - weakest) with multi-shot upgrade, (Spread*shot - moderate, but great coverage) with wider upgrade, (High-damage Explosive - very strong, but hard to aim) with bigger explosive pattern upgrade, (Flame*thrower - very strong, but short range) with slightly longer wider upgrade, and of course our favorite, (Laser*shot / Concentrated*beam*shot - strongest, but must aim precise), with more powerful, longer bigger beam upgrade. :-)
I disagree about the NES version. Laser is not an overall great weapon, but it has its uses.

Played the arcade version at Aladdin's Castle Arcade way before the Nintendo version. The arcade version was more challenging because your player jumped and flipped at a much wider angle (and hit-box), making it easier to get shot. Your field of view is smaller in the arcade version, too.

arcade Contra: another run and gun game
NES Contra: absolute classic
You must remember that the arcade version came out before the NES version. It's so overrated.
@@jahmirwhite7807 maybe. But I think arcade Contra is a rather ugly game, bad color choice and sluggish playability. NES Contra seems an entirely different game, specially the japanese version with maps and briefing between stages and moving background elements. Seems Konami saw potential in the game and tried to up a level in the home version.
@@persona83 there's also the MSX version that's more based on the arcade version, and that game is infamous for removing the Spread Shot and though it did include a new level concept at the time (underground caverns and a lava stage), there were tons of repeated stages afterwards.
