    You guys seem really nice and cool, and I love the effort on this table! As a professional table maker, I can give you a few pointers for next time. Pocket hole screws are ok but you must use glue or else the table will begin to separate within a relatively short amount of time. By sanding up to 800, you closed the pores of the wood and made it unable to accept stain, next time, stop at 220! you cannot feel the smoothness of the wood anyways, because poly is a topcoat and rests above the wood. By the way, make sure you do at least 4 coats of poly on the top and bottom equally! Finally, when you attach the base to the tabletop, make sure you have slotted holes in the base to allow for wood expansion because if you do not, the table will bow or cup within a short amount of time. Please let me know if you have any questions and again, you guys seem great and good job for your first time!

    I worked for an unfinished furniture store doing custom finishing for 8 years. We only used 150 grit sandpaper for pine and 180 grit sandpaper for oak prior to staining and clear coating. The finer grit sandpaper ends up polishing the wood and doesn't allow the stain to soak in as much. Your clear coat will level out any imperfections in the wood. Your table came out great!

    I love pocket hole joinery, and use it whenever I can. But in the case of a table top, I think I'd go with offset double row biscuits and glue. (and lots of clamps!) The primary reason, being to minimize any chance of splitting , warping, twisting and cupping that softwood framing lumber is famous for.

    Just happen to come across this video and I must say that table came out great especially for never doing it before. Just a side note, there’s no need to sand to that high of a grit, depending on the wood and what finish your using 220 is usually more than enough. Your top coat will determine the smoothness of the final product. And as far as pocket holes or biscuits or dominoes, there’s no need for any of them. Glue and clamps is the only thing you need. The pocket holes are good if you don’t have clamps but it’s really just holding it together until the glue dries. And biscuits and dominoes are only used to help with alignment(which does help quite a bit) but adds very little strength to the structure. Not sure if you mentioned how you attached the top but make sure you used something that allows for expansion and contraction otherwise the top may crack or warp. Hope this helps for your next project. Great work.

It has a great handle for carrying around the house. Its pretty lightweight and slides around easy. We bought it for our daughter’s first sleepover. Breakfast was a blur - but 12 7-8 year olds fit at the table with room to spare. We used it at thanksgiving and 6 adults fit comfortably on each side plus 2 on either end for a total of 8. Super easy to clean up afterwards as well.

    The table looks great and compliment the decor in the room. I personally put tarp down when staining over concrete. I understand that it is a work area and superficial but if you stain a lot it really makes the area look run down after a while. I would have done any different with the stain. It looks real good with the sorta two tone effect because of the different sanding grit. It adds just a little character that isn’t distracting at all but adds a little dimension. I would have been nervous about using pocket holes instead of biscuits and glue. You took a chance and it worked out very well. I’m inspired to give it a try.

    Looks great! I always use glue. I’d use a biscuit jointer (because I have one), or a Domino over pocket holes with the glue simply to avoid all the pocket holes under the table. I’m also a big fan of real breadboard ends. They add stability to very large tables and they are fun to make, I think they look cool too.
    I’m not too particular on the brand of stain, but I do like to use the staining pads during application. On soft woods (pine or alder), I use a homemade Pre-stain.

    You two did Pretty good i also have built that style of table one was store bought and one was made from old reclaimed 100 plus year old barn lumber and I tell ya what the old barn lumber one was to just die for have rich and beep colors of gray and a rust color grain and the mother-in-law just cried when she first seen it. It was a success in my eyes to this day it’s still standing the test of time no play in words lol have a good day y’all

    Honestly it is not about what I would do. I found what you two did for yourselves very impressive. I like the fact that you can replace anyone of those boards if you ever need to. And your table looks very nice.

    First off, Great Job!! as for the table: The stain I have come to love is Rustoleum Stains, they seam to be easier to apply and look real good. I also would have conditioned the wood prior to the stain this prevents blotchiness. The pocket-hole idea I like and its less messy than the glue-up.

    I would used dowels and glue on those, wood expands and retracts. I would also used a pre conditioner before staining, I saw some blotches on the wood. Overall it was a solid build.

    • @TripleLRusticDesigns
      @TripleLRusticDesigns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Nomad. I will definitely be trying a pre-stain next time.

    • @btrswt35

      Pre conditioner is a must for getting a even finish on pine. Good suggestion.

    • @robertcombs4916
      @robertcombs4916 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes always use pre stain conditioner but the reason the top came out lighter is because you sanded it to a much higher grit that the rest of the table. The lower the grit the more stain will absorb resulting in a darker color.
