The Minimalist Wedge Deadlift Setup

  • There are many ways to setup, slack pull, and wedge on the deadlift. And 1 option, albeit seemingly less common, is a more minimalist wedge approach. After having a call with Brad Couillard recently discussing deadlift technique, he taught me a new way of cueing that immediately hit home. And so I asked Brad if I could make a TH-cam video on this, and he happily agreed. So in my latest TH-cam video, I look at a spin-off style of deadlift setup from the 3-Step deadlift setup video I have done that promotes a more minimalist deadlift wedge style. This type of setup tends to promote more consistency with positioning and patience during the wedging process, and also decreasing the focus on an initial slack pull. In this video I touch on what we are trying to accomplish within our wedge process, in regards to the translation of the hips and shoulders. I look at the common faults we see from errors during this translation of the shoulders back and hips forward. I explain the possible errors that occur from overly slack pulling. And then from there I break down the minimalist wedge deadlift setup for both sumo and conventional step by step, and teach how to cue and create consistency rep after rep.

    My thoughts this morning: 1) I wish Steve deNovi had a video specifically on wedging. 2) I'm definitely overthinking my deadlift.
    Thank you for answering both with this absolutely brilliant video!

    What a perfect timing, I’ve been looking for a cure for my shit lockout, cause of my rounding of my lowerback and over wedging (someone even commented im pushing my waist instead of my hips to wedge) making me out of position and in results hard lockout.

    I like this! Going to try this as a way to teach my new lifters patience. Even if we end up using an aggressive wedge later seems like a great teaching tool.

      @PRsPerformance  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep, either way its another way to do the 3 step setup, which will land someone within some type of decent position.

    Really good cue! Just tried it and it works like a charm. Ive never truly understood how to wedge without dropping my hips into a squat or rounding my back. Its kind of just luck when i do it right... until now! Thank you!!

    Hi, your technique breakdowns are super eye opening to just how technical these lifts can be! I currently struggle hitting my knees on the way up with the barbell and wonder what you would recommend to fix this issue.

    Have always deviated to a static start because i was very inconsistent when wedging but it would be even harder to break the floor. Hopefully this will help 🤞

    another great vdeo 😁, can i still run one of ur powerlifting programs during a slow cut (losing 0.5kilos each week) and still expect progress?

    • @PRsPerformance
      @PRsPerformance  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is a lot of it depends there. If you have been training for a while, likely you will not continue to gain strength during a cut with any program. Best chance is to try to maintain strength as much as possible. If you are a beginner it might be possible.

    4:43 In step 1 (knees out position) , are my shins supposed to touch the barbell or not until my torso rotated like shown in 6:35??

    • @PRsPerformance
      @PRsPerformance  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      They will not quite touch the barbell until you fully wedge in, but will be very close.

  • @Connorleadbeater1

    when doing this in conventional should I think about doing anything with my lower back like putting it into extension or trying to straighten it? my arms are so short once I’m
    Hinged to the bar my full back is excessively rounded, I know it’s not a big deal with upper back but what about lower back

    • @PRsPerformance
      @PRsPerformance  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You will need to also bend the knees to greater degree in some way then vs solely hinging

    Feel like this is pretty easy for singles or the first rep. Any advice to help implement it for sets more than 1 rep?

    • @PRsPerformance
      @PRsPerformance  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Either reset each rep or don’t re-wedge, set the bar down intentionally and then go right back into the next rep without rewedging

    is it common to also have bruises on thighs from overwedging and having bad lockout? im curious if doing this will fix my lockout only and i if i will still hit the bar on my thighs lol

    • @PRsPerformance
      @PRsPerformance  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn’t say common, but if you are really having to drag on your thighs, that’s not out of the question to happen

    What are you doing with arms to pull slack? Are you just simply holding it or pulling? Im confused

    • @PRsPerformance
      @PRsPerformance  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m driving my feet through the floor which drives my body up as a whole

      Thanks for the reply in raw squat and dead lift is there anything I can do to reduce range of motion more like 1-2inch deadlift and squat in a stiff bar as an ipf lifer I have done on bench by arching more but with elbow depth and also with 2inch range of motion is there anything I can do in squat and deadlift other Than max stance,slack pull and downhill squat starting position because I done that already

      @@PRsPerformancemy unnecessary explanation! In 2019 I started following a female online trainer because gyms were closed..Covid. I loved it because she stepped out, made a brief introduction and got into it!! Nice!
      Recently, however, after 3 or 4 years she’s become TMI chatter.
      My meager brain can’t absorb it all and I’m sure it’s valuable info. I find myself longing for the good old days!
