Wonderful to see the clip from 1971 of Dexter singing and interacting with the audience as well as blowing that horn. His charisma comes across so strongly!

This video is an incredible treasure trove! I've never heard Oscar Pettiford's voice before and this is only the 3rd video I've ever seen of him playing, and the first on cello. Stuff Smith would die 2 years after his appearance. So much amazing Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (16 years old, playing with Bud Powell!!), and I've never heard Dexter Gordon sing before! I just wish we got a full tune from Mingus. Thanks for the upload Brian!

I was born and raised in Denmark, grew up about 30 miles south of Copenhagen, my friends and I would take the train or bus into Copenhagen to go to Montmatre. I went to a boarding school (Osted Efterskole) outside of Roskilde when I was 16, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen's dad was the head master, almost the whole family was musical. His mother and sister played the organ in church, his older brother Helge was a jazz musician as well, but NHOP became an international musician. When Niels Henning started to play in Montmatre, he was not old enough to drive (in Denmark you have to be 18) I think he was only 15, thus he had to take a taxi home, there were no buses or trains that late at night. Supposedly he got an offer to play with Count Basie when he was 15, but his parents said no, he had to stay in Denmark and finish school. In any case he did very well for himself.

Thanks. That is an incredible thing. And according to this video my guess would be that he was either first call or the house bass player at this club in Copenhagen when he was only 16 that is an incredible thing

I started to take the bus or train to Copenhagen in 1963 with friends to listen to Dexter Gordon who was living in Denmark at that time and a stable in club Montmatre, Niels Henning often play with Dexter he would have been 17 then.

Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen is only 16 here, holding his own next to Bud Powell, absolutely unbelievable.

Copenhagen in its former glory. Those were the days, my friends!!........
For those who care, Bud Powell plays Anthropology, Stuff Smith plays Bugle Call Blues and Mingus plays Sue's Changes.

Gracias por el documento. He sabido de este lugar por un concierto de Charles Mingus en 1976.

I think hanging out in Monmatre during those golden years would of been my jazz club of choice, not London or New York or any place else. A place for jazz lovers, not tourists...you know what I mean. So often it was Kenny Drew on Piano and NHOP on bass......for starters. They must have been fantastic nights, thank you for the footage.

    • @vova47

Looking at the keys is overrated. There has been a number of great blind pianists in jazz.
Tatum, Tristano, Shearing, Tete Montoliu for example.

Hard to beat Ben Webster at any point in time. Charles Mingus is other worldly. As usual.
