Man I hope you live a long life, closest I got to Bud Powell was by way of his protégé Walter Bishop Jr. He told me when he was 17 he had a Bud Powell album and copied it note for note and stated hanging out with Bud, Bird, Miles, Monk and others at Milton's club in Harlem, it's hard to believe all these cats are gone now.

Amazing! Do you know why nordic countries and Germany were the only people to record them so much? Dolphy, Mingus, many of them great tours in Europe and specifically the fact that they were video recorded. Any idea why?

@@erickricardoflores8472 America had no idea what they had produced, the importance and greatness of it, and still don't, by and large...The French, Scandinavians, Germans etc. heard artists such as Bud and Bird, got it, and instantly and correctly equated it to the great music their own countries and composers had produced over the centuries...

His smile through out much of 'round midnight - I've never thought it before - but its like he's bringing out a playful horror/gothic feel, certainly not diminished by the wobbly tape. Monk to my knowledge had this mode in tunes like Friday the 13th , and not just in the title, but the tune has a mocking quality, something like those organists who played for silent cinema might have conjured up , but in live performances I've not heard Monk take this approach with 'round midnight.

I grew up in Denmark, I left in 1967 to become an au pair in Westport Ct. However before I left Denmark my friends and I would take the bus or train into Copenhagen to hear Dexter Gordon play (I grew up 30 miles south of Copenhagen) When I was 16 I went to a boarding school for the summer. Niels Henning's dad was the head master, his whole family is musical. His mother and sister played the church organ, and his older brother was fairly well known jazz musician in Denmark. I think he had one other older brother that I don't remember much about.

Bud Powell lived in Copenhagen for a while. At the time of this take bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen was just 15 ys old, to turn 16 on May 27th. Btw the drummer's first name is Jørn (Elniff).

The piano was a tenor horn - left the rhythm sections to the bass and drummer- though he could comp and chord voice you to Jupiter- definitely one of the best to ever play American classical music

He was definitely having an on-night here, which was not always the case by this point in his life. Bud suffered from mental illness stemming from brutal NYPD police beatings with billy-clubs to his head and subsequent involuntary and inhumane electro-shock 'treatment' at forced hospital stays in the USA in the late '40's/early '50's, prior to his relocating to Europe, and really never recovered.

Pure cinema, magnificent camerawork. Powell, tho well tempered, suicidally virtuoso.
Unfortunately 'Round About' 7:00 the whole thing becomes suitable case for treatment
