To be fair they do say its very unstable and will tear itself apart in a few days or something because of overlapping klein fields and such. And every sgc destroys a part of it.
For context: these ships are WW 2 ships that has gained... a being. They're self-conscious and so have adapted and surpassed modern weapons. They took control of the seas because they can transform like this while having a mental image of a ship waifu or shipfu. How it came to be is.. well.. you need to watch the anime because all I can remember is that the MC's father shouted "I want all the shipfus to be mine!" and so he did as he became the main villain of the show.
That is somewhat right. The Fleet of Fog WAS initially activated around 1942 but was put on standby for some reason and only reappeared in the early 2000s and would be seen as 'Ghost ships in the fog'. Humanity found out these 'ghosts' packed some nasty firepower when the Russians sent a fleet to go poke them....and not one ship of theirs came back. They are advanced AI, more akin to spaceships but they took the form of WWII battleships because....they formed in WWII. They saw our ships and copied their form...but not their function. Their leader; the Admiralty Code, sent an order that basically said "Keep humanity out of the Oceans" in an attempt to isolate us. It partially worked as they jammed or shot down Satellites and SSTOs. In fight against them, their shields are pretty much immune to human weapons par Nukes and they can shoot those down easily. We are superior in two ways: Tactics and Airpower as human jets beat Fog planes, but they have every other advantage and thus by 2145, they rule the Oceans. However in victory their Supreme Flagship Yamato, was granted permission to make a Human avatar or Mental model to try and learn how humans think. Soon all Fog had them. Take a bunch of Robotic Killer AI in spaceships masquerading as WWII Battleships and suddenly given the Free will and the ability to form opinions and emotions. What do you get? Those same warship AIs now having civil disputes and Civil wars, siding with crazy humans, siding with good humans, or just plotting revolutions to overthrow teh Supreme Flagship and Admiralty Code. Meanwhile on land, Humanity is ALSO engaged in war for resources (European-Asian war) or are just scraping by (The UK and Japan). Some are ok (North America...mostly) but to say the idea of Humans pushing teh big red button and just starting armageddon in a last ditch attempt to be free or the Fog just glassing the Continents grows ever closer.

Probably my favorite anime series of all time. Although it still pains me how they butchered the plot after the original 12 episodes and made it harder to take seriously with the whole "student council" crap.
The second a Yamato-class ship showed up in this fight, every other ship, including the always lovely Kongo should have been all "fuck it...I'm not getting paid enough for this" and ran!
I just realized that there should be a dimensional warp when Kongo fire her graviton cannon at Hiei's cannon but there's nothing after it. Remember when Takao did that to counter Maya's cannon back in the Iwo Jima episode? That's what is supposed to happen.

Well I dont know, the other ship even its nameship dont do that split-cannon thingy, even lower classes cruisers like those Myoko-class and Takao-class. But when Haruna/Kirishima cannon didnt split it becomes normal gun with standard ballistic shell but with wow rate of fire like 0.5 round per second.
That big white one with the hundreds of guns on just the main deck, i bet it could outdo the UNSC Infinity And that white ship should be named "Avalon"
The capital ships have Mirror Ring System shown at 4:45. It can basically redirect Wave Motion Gun into other dimension. In the manga, it is hinted that each flagship has access to an arsenal of powerful weaponry. The only one showed so far is when Kongou made a giant 3D printer to spawn Fog ships in her location.

I-401 (the submarine) went to Musashi's location to stop her but Musashi is too strong for her so she merged with Yamato (which was previously sunk by Musashi near that place) and that's why we see a battleship "knife fight".
at the beginning of the anime, the yamato losses to her sister because they have a fight, Iona is a split core from Yamato to find a captains son and have them lead them to some peace by beating yamatos sister.
