Spray Painted Wheels 2 Years Later! | DID IT LAST??

  • original video: • How To Spray Paint Whe...
A couple years ago, I made a video called "How to Spray Paint Wheels Like a PRO!" Recently, that video is getting a lot of attention, so I thought I would do a follow up and show you how they look two years later.
    Supply List:
    Sonax: amzn.to/2rh3HEo
    Duplicolor Paint: amzn.to/2qkRTB1
    Duplicolor Clear Coat: amzn.to/2r7q69X
    Masking Tape: amzn.to/2r7wY72
    Wheel Brush: amzn.to/2pMfr0A
Despite a lot of skeptics, the paint actually held up fine. It's not quite as glossy as the day I painted it, but for about $25 in supplies, I can't complain. If you are planning to spray paint your wheels, here are a few quick tips that I didn't mention in my original video:
    1. Don't paint them on the grass. You will end up getting pollen and little bugs in the paint which is annoying.
    2. Allow the wheels to dry overnight before reinstalling them. Wait at least 24 hours before driving.
    3. If you don't want to use masking tape, you can use index card to keep the paint off the tires. Simply tuck the card between the tire and the fender.

    MAIN LENS: Sony 18-105 F4 amzn.to/2BzVAsp

I painted the rear brake drums on my GMC Sierra with the cheapest gloss black paint I could find from home depot. Prepped and painted very similar to how you did the rims. Only difference being I had to use a metal wheel to remove surface rust. Long story short it has been a couple years and they still look good. When paint prep is done correctly spray paint can last as long as any other paint.

Nice video buddy. If you listen carefully to the sound track while spraying both the paint and clear coat, it was evident that either the can's were not thoroughly shaken, the cans were nearly empty OR the can's tube was not designed to spray from the nearly horizontal angle you were holding the cans in. You could clearly hear part of your application was the product alternated by just the propellant which will certainly affect your final result, giving you far more orange peel despite how well the paint self-levels. I suggest you try supporting the wheel in a nearly upright vertical position That will allow you to hold your spray can close to vertical as well. The brand you chose features a patented "fan spray" tip that will give you better results than competing sprays, but the finest tip cannot compensate for holding the can at an angle beyond around 45 degrees. Keep up the good work and the end result after 2 years shows that you did a great job overall!.

If I have to repaint them every couple years so be it I’d rather repaint them every couple years for $30-40 in supplies than go to a “professional” for a simple black painted rim. Thanks!

question to anyone giving input...assuming I sand very well (220 then 400 grit) and clean well and dry...I bought duplicolor green can self etching primer and duplicolor high performance wheel coating gloss black. Do these work together? IF I do a clear coat...do I ...
#1. apply the duplicolor clear or go for the 2k (harder more durable)? I read that 2K should only be used for certain paints.
#2. should I apply clear coat when still tacky 40-45 min after last paint coat or wait 3 or 4 hours

When she has to have her tires changed, the paint is going to be gouged on the edges. Also, during the stages of painting, sanding the paint down to a glossy smooth finish before adding the clear is key as well as sanding the clear to a glossy smooth finish. This will help eliminate brake dust from becoming trapped in the irregular/rough surface for easy cleaning. Overall, this is a great job! Very cost effective.

    • @justinrobert6573

The wheels will only be on the car 3-4 months a year, do you recommend using the Duplicolor clear or 2K clear? I noticed you're in Michigan, did your mom use the refinished wheels in the winter and go through the car wash once a week with them?

Hey I liked your video and I found it informative. I have a new truck and I just put 20s on it. But I am wondering how often you think you will have to repaint those Wheels? They do look good after 2 years for sure. Do you think you get longer where if you had them professionally done or if the product that you use is the main factor? Thanks in advance

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

They still look good after two years. A professional paint job will last longer but we are talking $500 to have a pro strip the wheels down and re-finish them compared to $20 doing it yourself
