The Witness is a magnificent game if you can appreciate it. But it will not be for all gamers. Sadly, the people who will benefit the most from it will not have a good time. The Witness is an adventure in learning. The maze puzzles is the language of the island. So gradually you learn a totally new language without realising it. You can actually start to talk to the island. The more deep learning you get from the puzzles (i.e. talking to the island) the more you start seeing the island in a different way. So the Witness makes learning fun, and if you get stuck (which you will do) you can always go somewhere else and learn something new. It teaches you to be curious, ask intelligent questions for problem solving, work towards bigger goals by reaching smaller ones and question your ability to really see the world as it is (as it always changes). The Witness will not give you grandiose bonuses for solving the puzzles. The Witness is all about you and your willingness to explore it. When the game starts there are no fanfares. It is only your mind and the Island. I can just say that The Witness is all I hoped for. Everyday I am thinking about puzzles and I am changing my sleeping patterns, which the reviewer said was one part of the definition of a perfect game. But is it for everyone? It should be but sadly isn't. A lot of gamers today are so filled with games that give them pleasure every minute. This game doesn't. But it gives you a whole lot more if you are willing to explore and learn.
If someone says," there's no narrative or story in The Witness" then that person hasn't played and truely explore that island. There are characters, there's a reason that your on this island, AND theirs a purpose for all these puzzles. Seriously ;)
I found there not being any music really fit the game. And the story and what the island is also fit really well when you were digging deeper. I also really like that its about the game and not fake rewarding you with some bad written videogamestory. And am I the only one who found the tetris piece to be logical and totaly making sense. So many complaints about the game breaking its own rules bullshit. That never happend. People have to start being patient, look closely at your enviroment and think. They arent that hard.
I'll agree to disagree on the music bit, as for the story I do agree with you, my main point was as a warning to folk that would want a more traditional, or at least a more easily understood narrative. And yeah, all the puzzles make perfect sense, I never even considered some of them as not conforming to the rules set
At two 2:37 you said that there is no answer or story in the game. So why i found the answer after 120 hours of playing it? Pls do another review after you got into the mountain, beated the challenge and got to the alternative end!
It actually works quite well. I missed the music at first but the sounds design is really amazing in this game. With headphones especially. I love just wandering the island and listening. Plus the sounds actually become pretty important in some parts of the game
This game is free on Epic Games right now and I just want to say, Brian Eno - Thursday Afternoon is the absolute best background music you can find for this game. Just put it on repeat and go!
Thanks for reviewing this game, after since I end up see this game along with other games are free on PS4 ‘Stay At Home’ section. I just want to know what it’s about from this game before download the game itself, puzzle solving kinda reminds me of old Tomb Raider games except this puzzle game itself’s quite the opposite from that.. but I do always appreciate puzzle video games. This is review already helps me to know from that, I already have start download this game 😊🎮 Have a nice month and take care, BTW.
Damn, this makes me want to play this game and I really don't even like puzzle games! On a side note, you said you can "beat the game" but yet there isn't really a story line. Is beating the game finding out what the island is for or something along those lines?
There's a sort of major final run of puzzles on a mountain top you can only enter after clearing 7 other areas. It does have an ending in a sense, just not one that has a clear obvious narrative
JB has also strongly eluded to being able to piece together more layers of truth by playing more of the game. Seems pretty straightforward, but then he might just be a sadistic f*ck. My advice: Question everything.
Varies based on your skill level with puzzles and whether you want to 100% the game or just beat it. I'd argue a minimum of 9 hours, I've spent a good bit more than that on it
Personally I feel like I got my money's worth, especially since i'm still working through it to 100% it, there's a surprising amount of content in it. That and I love puzzles and it scratched that it h wonderfully
Not sure I agree with ya on that one Bruno, some of the best games to shape the industry have been minimal/no action. Hell one of my favorites growing up was Myst, pure exploration
+Matt Halpain oh it's a super pretty game, but definitely a tough investment if you want to see everything without doing puzzles, they're pretty interlinked
I see. I like puzzles sometimes like in Zelda games. It would be nice reward to see the more of the scenery n landscape in the game via being able to solve the puzzles.

Definitely worth the mind f*ck lol
Loved it
If you think this game has no music, then you haven't played it long enough. It absolutely has music and it's going to drive you mad.

There's no music? wtf ? part of why i wanted to get this is of that damn good soundtrack in the trailer.
Yup, completely dead quiet. I would've preferred music too, but the visuals alone are still good enough to make it work for me

The game doesn't need music.
Loved how u said "beat it" and I heard MJ voice ! 😆
👍 nice review .
Thanks! While editing I realized what I said and knew what must be done
Smart man. Maybe too smart... ⌐.⌐'
A very thorough and well balanced review. I think I'll get this game on the back of this review. Thanks man.
This game is free on Epic Games right now and I just want to say, Brian Eno - Thursday Afternoon is the absolute best background music you can find for this game. Just put it on repeat and go!
awesome review man you deserve more subs

how long is the game ?

Not the typical game I play, but looks interesting none the less!
Have you played H1Z1 before, More specifically the Battle Royale mode?
Nope on both counts
a big reason why this is one of my favorite games IS BECAUSE it's not for everyone.
_There's no music._
Little you knew. ;)
Looks like a cool game, but too expensive for what you get IMO.
Personally I feel like I got my money's worth, especially since i'm still working through it to 100% it, there's a surprising amount of content in it. That and I love puzzles and it scratched that it h wonderfully
Good to hear. Luckily there are sales for the cheap bastards among us. Great review by the way.
Always a valid option, especially with all the steam sales
calling completing on the meaning of reality and your experience in it as bullshit requires some balls. wow xD
Well!! Graphical the game is awesome but gaming it is another history, it need more action. Nice video Kevin.
+Bruno Amaro lol not every game needs action..
Yeeeeah
Not sure I agree with ya on that one Bruno, some of the best games to shape the industry have been minimal/no action. Hell one of my favorites growing up was Myst, pure exploration
+Kevin Kenson Agree Kevin.
Come on, there IS a narrative, don't you see it?
I like puzzle games without a narrative, but FUCK this game!!!
when I saw this game I am attracted to the beauty of the scenery n landscape but not the puzzles.
+Matt Halpain oh it's a super pretty game, but definitely a tough investment if you want to see everything without doing puzzles, they're pretty interlinked
