The discard pile is open information and the "competitive" scene have you put each card in its "own" discard pile unless it is a copy of another than you put it on top of the other. This way the opponent can see what you have left in the deck (bc they pretty much know every 30ish card deck) and can decipher what you may or may not have on hand. I don't do that but I also don't go to "comp" matches. I enjoy it at a good 7/10 myself. Haven't played any of the new marvel releases.
Props for dedicating so much time to go in-depth with a game that doesn't do it for you. And after watching this I finally understood why Red vs Beo is my favorite set lol
Glad you gave an Unmatched another go. It is one of my favorite games. I personally have 21 characters and as you said... The more you have the better is the game. I find that this game has an incredible depth. Of course some characters are stronger then others but sometimes S/A tier character are directly countered by "weaker" characters from B/C tier. Understanding different matchups and strategies is a key in this game. Btw Medusa and Bigfoot are S tiers so good analysis on their power level. But Sherlock is probably the strongest hero in the game :D I was surprised you did not mention him, but maybe he is not your jam from what you said in the video. Thank you for the great content you guys do. You are seriously one of the best chanels for board games.
Sherlock needs time to hide and burn the enemy down with his deductions. But he requires good knowledge of your opponent's deck. I play 2v2 a lot with my family and it is really annoying when Holmes hides behind his ally's 3-5 minions and deduces you to death. But then again, both times my team still won.
Sherlock has 9 scheme cards so sometimes he can be caught with his pants down and he only has like 1 situational way to draw extra cards so his hand management can be harder than other characters.
Sherlock can however run away and damage people from across the map with his opponent discard cards. Especially if you know the values of the boost cards.
My problem with unmatched is the same problem i have with undaunted - i have no one who wants to play 2 player head to head board games, and yet i keep buying each pack because of the theme alone!!!
Yooo this game is WAY better in-person. The app is garbagggggeeee. I have every physical set and I will never get tired of it. The app though. I’m so tired of it.
I would say try some of the newest characters. The first few sets are somewhat overly simple but there are some fairly complex characters now. Its not going to completely revolutionize the game but does make it more stimulating for seasoned gamers.
I haven’t played Unmatched in a while but my understanding is the newer characters (that I don’t think are in the digital version) have more going on with them (often more actions/combo potential). Also newer maps have things such as power-up items and map spaces that give advantages such as bonuses to attack or defend. So basically I think they’re progressively making the game a bit more complex and interactive than the more basic original sets.
@@ashtonwu7760 Based on your wish for more to do I'd recommend the Houdini vs the Genie box if you decide to try something new. Both Genie and Houdini kind of feel like they have more actions almost every turn. Genie because he literally do (he can discard one card for one extra action at the start of his turn) and Houdini because almost every boost gives him a bonus on top of just extra move/damage (sometimes even extra actions).
I mean fair, as an Unmatched Enjoyer its definitely overhyped for what it is. That said, if you're specifically only interested in more complex and interesting fighters, theres a lot of great options from the newer sets: Houdini vs the Genie introduces Boost Tricks, Jill Trent and Tesla from Tales to Amaze have very tricky gimmicks, and the upcoming Slings and Arrows looks like their most complex set yet- shakespeare has to count syllables on played cards to do effects and the witches have a cauldron that seems to be similar to Red's basket. If you're just not that into unmatched then by all means leave it be, but if the stopgap for you is the simplicity, there are boxes that fix that :)
To bad you never tried the marvel ones. They changed up the maps where you get certain bonuses in certain places. Also lots of those characters like Bigfoot and sun as were from when the game was still pretty new. They have some characters that have really been refined and become unique. They definitely have combos you can make now. To me the fun isn’t the “game”. It’s the puzzle of me and another live player figuring out our two different characters on a particular map. But I agree it’s average. There’s way more complicated and fun games. But it’s perfect for 2 players when you want something quick and light.
Just curious if you are planning on reviewing Guards of Atlantis 2??? lol the new gamefound campaign just ended and it wont be out till 2024 at the earliest but I would love yo hear what you guys think.
This is definatly one of my faviorite games, i don't play it online so don't know how that is. However i bought every set in a year after getting my first set. It is so nice to play with friends and flat mates as it takes 15-40 min to play and you can fit it in everywhere. You have some very real critiqe as their absolutely is not 100% balanced. An other part of the unbalance is counter matchupps, as some matchupps are autolosses if both players are competent in the game. The thing i like with the unbalance is that when i play vs new players i can play King Arthur or an equal to him.
I get why some people dont like unmatched. I personally dont need the characters to be equally matched. sometimes it's fun to just play the story in front of you. then pull out another hero to play again. I love the themes and I love that it has brought me and my son together for an evening fight each night before bed. I was even surprised how good the marvel sets were ( not being a marvel fanboy myself). there really is something about 3 raptors or bullseye fighting a T rex. nice review. thanks
I really like how there is very little chance in Unmatched and a large amount of player skill, as opposed to Dice Throne, which is slow, very chance-heavy and induces analysis Paralysis.
I wouldn't say "very little chance". It's still draw a card mechanic at its core. I once lost a game within 10min because i had terrible first hand without any defense cards and did not get even one defense card with next 4-5 maneuvers. My opponent had 2x 5 DMG attacks on his fist draw :P There is a skill involved in this game but it's like 60% skill and 40% luck. Some characters like Sinbad are very much dependand on how quickly you get Travel cards. I don't think I ever lost a game with Sinbad if I got luck with 3 Travel cards on first draw.
I got into Unmatched last year and really enjoyed it. I now own 6 official sets and have printed off a bunch of fan made decks. It’s a super quick skirmish game that my wife enjoys for its simplicity, so it’ll be staying in the collection for years to come. I do not plan on getting anymore sets but did back Unmatched Adventures Tales to Amaze and am super excited for that one! Have you played Disney’s Sorcerer’s Arena Epic Alliances? I started playing this one at the end of January and LOVE it. DSA is in the same vein as Unmatched (tactical skirmish game) but with some key differences that make it a better game in my opinion. 1) Theme is all Disney/Pixar characters (not a gameplay thing but a difference) 2) You draft a team of (3) characters instead of having just one hero. This means things are much more balanced as “OP” or “weak” characters can play into each other’s strengths. It’s also an awesome puzzle to choose characters that compliment each other. 3) Characters can be upgraded during the game, unlocking a new asymmetric ability. You can find a DSA vs Unmatched thread on BGG under the DSA page that goes more in depth. Anywhos, if you are a Disney fan I highly recommend it!
I am yet to play unmatched, I'm still on a giant Root kick myself. The one thing I have to say about unmatched is that the boards look pretty uninspired. I'm sure they get the job done just fine, but something about it is off putting to me. Either way, great video as always!
See the boards in-person and your mind will change. The art is awesome and there are details that make me smile. Though you have to like the themes I would say.
hmm, I don't actually play a whole lot digitally, if I do its mostly on BGA or TTS! Takenoko, Blood Rage, and 6Nimmt are a couple of ones that come to mind on BGA. -Ashton
I can definitely say, playing the mobile app is just no where near the same as playing in person. Id give the app an average (when is works) for enjoyment. It is a well designed app but a lot of the startegies just dont work on the AI.
Oh hey, you've been to Game Kastle Santa Clara? I'm the one that runs the Unmatched scene over there (made the poster). Yeah, feel free to come on by, we're there every Tuesday, pretty casual experience with weekly objective sheets for fun, we also give away small prizes at the end of the month.
Unmatched is great for being streamlined, with Ameritrash feel and having the perfect duration , of course it is going to be imbalanced, try to defeat a T. rex with a melee fighter 🤣, but that is not the fun. The fun lies in trying to defeat a T. rex with a melee fighter.
I have tried to like unmatched and played it several times. I rate it the same as you 5/10 which for me is not good enough for me to justify buying it knowing there is so much content for it already. I typically try to get all of a game when I start to purchase them so I got the mobile app to further see if I could like unmatched with similar results, it's okay and I understand why it popular I just don't want it for myself.
I skipped the base game vol1 and immediately started with cobble and fog. Base game characters are a little too simplistic and not well balanced. The more recent characters are more fun and offer more depth. This game lives from surprises, second guessing and emotions. Its not a super heavy game with tons of options and pathways or ressource management.
Well that was kind of a misfire. I will put this down as "I played a buggy game on the computer and did not enjoy it." review. If you had played against another person I feel you would have had a much better impression. I would also like to point out the official digital version is a free mod for TTS that has all characters and maps.. The TTS mod is also used for formal and informal tournaments. The version you used is not authorized for tournament play by the game company. I love UnMatched but don't like the Steam version.
Without him trying the newer sets, even in person I don't think he will rate it above 6. The unbalance in the earlier set is insane, yeah some match up can actually counter the top picks, but it will still be a tough battle. I say the Marvel sets are wayyyy better than the previous sets in terms of balance especially against each other.
The rulebook and literally every top-level tournament has this in its set of rules. Not only is it not cheating, but it's a part of most skilled players' toolkit.
This is definatly one of my faviorite games, i don't play it online so don't know how that is. However i bought every set in a year after getting my first set. If you are interested in competetive play zeroskatr12 is definately the yt creator you should look to. You have some very real critiqe as their absolutely is not 100% balanced. Those 2 characters are definitely my top picks in terms of enjoyment! Cheers! -Ashton

Cheers man! Yeah I read online on how Sherlock was super strong, but I could never get him to click! PErhaps if I had 60 days instead of 30 :) -Ashton
Thanks for the reupload to fix the cut ending.
cheers man! Yeah not sure what happened with the original render.
A note on official tournaments: you have rosters and you take turns banning until you only have a few left, then you play sets with pick-counterpick.
You did good soldier,
now rest sweet, sweet prince

Is there a reason to to try digital version today? I want to play mostly against AI. I dont think there is someone on-line.
I feel the same way. So what game should I play? Is Kill Team Warhammer 40k a good step?
I haven’t played Unmatched in a while but my understanding is the newer characters (that I don’t think are in the digital version) have more going on with them (often more actions/combo potential). Great pick! Their kits are definitely some of the most fun imo, I like doing being damage with their power cards. -Ashton

Please do a review for Summoner Wars 2E!
Throw back to the Agricola grind. I'd like to see you do a tablet game. Board gaming on-the-go.

Same here. Play it with my 11 and 12 year old girls. Gets them off screens and connect.

As of today 28-Feb-2024 UnMatched Digital is still broken. You should have played another person instead of wasting time on this! Silly Ashton 🙂
wait realy? They should bring back up the server, that's wild. Where are the refunds!!?? -Ashton
Can i play vs hard AI? I want to buy it for that
You can find the app for free if you want to try it before buying it
