    This never happened before.
I was shocked to see her eating herself.
At first when she missed the rat and got her tail, I was ok because that can happen.. but then she let go, grabbed the rat, and ate herself again on purpose. WHAT??

There are a few reasons* why snakes do that. *it's not 100% known, but these are theories and hypotesis by vets
Stress, temperature regulation issues, hypermetabolism, hunger, shedding, constrictive habitat, illness or confusion.
Often when a snake thinks it has gotten another snake that it can eat, aka their own tail, they don't realize that it is themselves.
I mean, some snakes do this, it's not as uncommon as some people think, although it is still considered rare and most likely to happen to pet snakes. The ourobouros thing is known for a reason 😅
But I do get that it is distressing to see for the first time.
I saw some people mention this in the comments, and strong "not tasty" things like vinegar can help. Like take that vinegar/water mix on a piece of cotton and gently dab her tail with it, it shouldn't dehydrate her skin, and should work as a deterant.
As for a larger enclosure, I think that maybe, while large, she found it to be "too open", you know? Like maybe not enough hiding spaces, and all that. I remember my friend who had a snake, that enclosure was like a miniature jungle. While predators, they are still prey animals for like birds and stuff. So a lot of open spaces could be stressful.

I heard years ago that snakes eating themselves can be a problem with overheating (I think it causes confusion) - perhaps check temp in her enclosure, both the warm and cool sections (snakes should have a gradient), compared to recommended ranges for the species.
Regarding her enclosure size, perhaps try a larger one with a small hide. You wont be able to see her all the time but a large enclosure will make it easier to have a temperature gradient.

I never thought the ouroboros could be real. Jokes aside, I'm sooo glad she's doing okay now!! She keeps eating herself due to low calcium and nutrients. Sounds like she needs a hide and is stressed. All the moving back and forth between enclosures does a number on them. If you did not wash the slime off her body then there is still sent of the rat on her, she is likely still hungry, she senses the rat still in her enclosure due to the slime. Wash her off get her a large hide and leave her alone.

  • @angelusgaston5922

You say she is not stressed yet that is a clear sign of stress.
The reason she is stressed in a large enclosure is because she has NO COVER. She needs hides, she needs branches, she needs plants, more places for her to feel comfortable and hidden.
Ive said this before about all of your snakes set ups, none of them have any form of enrichment, snakes get stressed when they are dumped in to a large empty tank if you set them up correctly you will find out that there not stressed at all.
Those snake enclosures just seem like shear lazyness to me and someone who can't be bothered to do research on how to set up properly.
Snakes eat themselves due to stress, temperature regulation issues, hypermetabolism, hunger, shedding, constrictive habitat, illness, or confusion.
Three of those are clear with your snakes set up and she looks to be on the thin side as well.
If I was you I would stick to the T's your clearly not sure how to look after snakes and don't seem to want to learn.

There’s a reason why she’s eating herself. it may be due to stress, temperature regulation issues, hyper metabolism, hunger, shedding, constrictive habitat, illness, or confusion.

He is a horrible snake that he doesn’t take care of any of his reptiles. The way he should he doesn’t have a hide boxes doesn’t have any in Richmond and any of his animal enclosures. That’s why they’re so stressed out and getting sick and dying. because they don’t feel comfortable or safe they just have like bare minimum things in their enclosures

I have a corn snake and a everglades rat snake, never had that happen. It would probably freak me out as well. I'd try offering her 2 rats instead of 1 and hope that puts an end to it....also you said you tried a larger enclosure but she was stressed and just stayed in a corner.....was there a hide in that enclosure? Maybe try a larger enclosure again but with a hide or 2 for her and see if she still stresses out. Anyways hope it doesn't happen again 😀

Probably because you do things right. Snakes trying to eat themselves is a very bad sign. Could be something wrong with the habitat. Too small, not the correct heat, or the snake could be ill or under a lot of stress.

I've got a question for everyone criticizing the enclosure:
I only own 2 Ball Pythons and each one is in a big decorated naturalistic tank. So not much experience, but I agree with y'all. However, I see snakes kept in flat Rubbermaid boxes all the when people are "collecting" or breeding them and they say that they're more comfortable in dark confined spaced and really only active when hungry. Then I think my Pythons hardly utilize half the space and hides and vines I provide... so I'm pretty torn as to what's "necessary". Btw, I do feed mine thawed, in the enclosure. Have regular bulb 12on/12off and heat 24/7 on one side. Those tubs don't have that either usually, do they? How can those "collecter" snakes not be stressed?!

You NEED hides man she is super stressed out and it can cause them to eat themselves as seen here. It’s because they are constantly afraid and they mistake her own tail for a predator and or prey and tries to eat it. Pour rubbing alcohol or gently brush rubbing alcohol over her mouth and she’ll let go then rinse it out after

I don't know what type of snake she is or if that's just normal for that type of snake, but all along her back she''s very sharp looking. hii! this may be the problem on why your snake is eating herself/himself: Once they begin to feed, they may not even realize that they are consuming themselves. The behavior is rare, but it does happen. Snakes eat themselves due to stress, temperature regulation issues, hypermetabolism, hunger, shedding, constrictive habitat, illness, or confusion.
edit: also try seeking a vet if it continues.

I'd check your husbandry again incase anything has changed. I find it hard to believe that an arboreal species like this is happy in that size of an enclosure. there's no hides or foliage and with her size she cant have a suitable gradient to properly thermoregulate

Bless, it just wasn’t her turn for the brain cell.
On a serious note though, I get the smaller than recommended enclosure…2 of my 9 snakes will only eat if kept in smaller enclosures, anything bigger & they’re off food no matter how much clutter they have to hide in. But, if you didn’t remove any hides to feed, then she needs one or two in there & more to climb on. Maybe try her with a sky hide if she’s not on the ground much.
