    Hello, in the italian language when the reporting clause is before the direct speech, we use the colon ( : ) not the comma. Example:
    Mark said: " I am tired! "
    Please can you tell me when you use the colon in english? Thanks.

    • @CrownAcademyEnglish
      @CrownAcademyEnglish  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      tere Sometimes in English, it is acceptable to use the colon also. You might see it used in some magazines, for example. But in strict written English, you should use the comma. Example, if it is for an academic exam or essay or formal report. Using the comma will always be correct in English. I hope that helps.Andrew

    Thank you for this helpful lesson.Does the position of the 'reporting clause' play any important role in the sentence,Andrew?

    • @CrownAcademyEnglish
      @CrownAcademyEnglish  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      nongphutre Hello and thanks for the comment and question.
      For simple reporting clauses like "said" or "replied" then they can go before or after the speech. For the others ("commented", "admitted" etc) it is better to write them after the speech.
      Best wishes,
      Andrew
