- What went wrong? 30,000 mile brutally honest review of the Royal Enfield Himalayan. I talk about the good the bad and the ugly when it comes to real world ownership of a Royal Enfield Himalayan Motorcycle What do I like? What have I repaired or replaced? Dealership? Enfield Recovery? Parts? I discuss these issues and more in this video and touch on why I now have another motorbike.
30.000 Mile 48,000 Kilometer review of a Himalayan used in all conditions.
Wee Jaunt
Nice to see a ''propper'' road test on a mororcycle .30,000 miles is a meaningfull test of what a machine is realy like rather than a half hour or even a 3 week assesment .Well done .;-)
Perfect summary: for me you've highlighted all the key issues very well. This bike is all about the mindset. It's slow, brakes are ropey and it looks like an old landrover but it all works if you don't expect too much. Love touring on mine I find it very relaxing to ride.
All the best
Richard
Thanks Richard appreciated mate I love the bike for all its wee flaws it's got character
Front brake easy to get working with a set of EBC brake pads. Transforms the stopping and eliminates the need for a crystal ball.
Intake, exhaust, cam, and ecu really open up the bike. Throttle response and 5HP gain. A 40t rear sprocket and the bike becomes even more lively.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Great update on the bike , sounds like most bikes but as you say easier to repair yourself .👍 look forward to viewing your trip and repairs .Good to see you back on here 😁👍
Martin, so glad to see you’re back. Missed you, mate. Cheers from the U.S.
100% agree with decent crash bars - the first mod I did.
After several “low speed drops” absolutely ZERO damage to the bike itself (sadly, cant say the same for me - still nursing several broken bones).
Really enjoy your no-nonsense videos 😀👍🇦🇺
Good to see you back in good fettle. I like the way you deliver your videos as well as the honest and informative content. I am looking forwards to hearing some of the background on places visited in Europe. You have a way of making places sound interesting and worth visiting. Thats not as common on TH-cam as you might expect.
Thanks Jack appreciated mate glad Ur still following along mate. First Euro video coming later in the week.
Brilliant to see you back mate and can’t wait to see your trip!..thankfully you came up in my recommendations as for some reason I wasn’t subbed to your channel (I was, so maybe Yt is playing silly buggers again). My Dad will be chuffed you’re uploading again, he’s nearly 81 and loved watching your videos! 😀👍
A very fair and honest review on that mileage for the RE Himalayan. If the maintenance and checks are carried out correctly and timely, I believe the RE Himalayan can serve a rider very well over a long period. Like any Motorcycle depending on type of usage and Terrain, wear and tear will manifest itself over time which is normal. As you pointed out and proved in your videos many times, maintenance and attention to any unusual noise and doing something about it makes all the difference. Also upgrades to Bulbs and brake pads and good quality branded Tyres for the type of riding, is the key to riding free issues also spares for long trips. Again another clear and concise review after regular Himalayan riding and also putting in some long rides. I would also like more power from my Himalayan but as you rightly state at the speeds the bike is capable of, you don't miss much on the journey. Thanks again for a really great review.
Excellent update.... I have a 2022 and value the ease of working on it. It's just a fun bike. Thanks
Good to see you back , lookinf forward to your upcoming videos
Again welcome back,steve
Thanks Steve aye it's good to he making videos again

@@WeeJaunt I strongly recommend Heidenau's K60 Scout. Absolutely fantastic...
Really well balanced review, been thinking of buying second hand himalayan your review has tipped the balance in favour, all the best from down south
A great honest owners appraisal, thank you for sharing. Greetings from Caithness.👍
Hello there.
Great review! I live in France and only have 16000 km on my himy's clock.
Good to hear I should be O.K for many (I hope) to come.
Just had to replace one relay to get rid of difficult starting issues.
So rendez-vous for the 60000 mile review.
Take care.
Tony.
Fantastic to hear of new videos coming soon
Thanks mate appreciated 👍
I've had my one since February 2022 but I've only used it for commuting in London.
Have to agree the dealerships are very good. Haven't had many issues at all.
Thanks for the review 👍
Great video 👍looking forward to the videos about your tour.
The new Himmy should be out next month. I hope its a looker, because at the moment I am being strongly tempted by the Super Meteor. 🙈
Fantastic review, and an honest insight into Himalayan ownership. I'm really debating whether or not to get one, as the prices are crazy low atm. Safe travels and here's to the next 30k (and the next etc etc).
Brilliant video thanks and I love the new bike , since fixing the dash with the silica gel pack on the royal Enfield did it hold up well , just wondering if I could put a silica gel pack inside my LCD/ tft dash like you without any issues
So nice to see it in the muddy hillsides. The Bike That Loves to Climb is how i call mine sometimes.
That's my local off-road playground the Himmi chews it up
seriously though - just come back from the NC500 two up and had rear brake issues. Now fixed and running like a dream GO HIMMY !!!
Aye it's perfect for that kind of trip mate
Great video, you mentioned things others do not and I enjoyed watching it. Thanks.
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it
@@WeeJaunt in that case I should tell you I subscribed
Thanks for sharing your experience with the Himalayan. I only have a tenth the mileage you do and mine still feels brand new. But I agree with your comment on if you need to rely on a backstreet mechanic, the Himalayan is simple enough that almost any mechanic can handle it.
Time will tell if there are any issues to emerge on mine but so far it's been great.
Thanks mate well fingers crossed you don't get any issues
Interesting vid. I’ve mentioned a few times myself on various forums about the headlamp brightness being affected by the glare of the dashboard but no one has ever commented on that. I suspect they all thought I was ,and when I suggested they test it by putting a hand in front of your face at night.
Pleased to hear that someone else has done this test 😊
It definitely makes a difference the console is far too bright. I'm thinking of putting yellow acrylic on the plastics to see if that helps
Yeah mate brilliant, enjoyed that no nonsense straight talking..spot on kiddo
Found myself a new channel 👍
Great long term report! Thanks.
Thanks mate appreciated 👍
A great review, with a good appreciation for what the bike is capable of. I think if you have this type of bike then you need to be able to do some basic repairs and upgrades when needed. The RE Himalayan is like all bikes there are pros and cons but not all bikes are as good value and practical as the Himalayan. I'm just about to subscribe to the channel, 👍
Yer channel name earns the sub alone! 😂
Great review, looking forward to having a binge watch through yer content.
I’ve got big bikes as well, but prefer to do my solo touring on a little KTM 390 Adventure.
Like you say, slow the pace down a little and enjoy the ride, but the KTM has the little bit extra power to get you out of the sort of trouble you described.
Ride safe pal 👍
Good honest review 👏
My youngest son and his partner, both riding Himmys, did 15,000 miles round Europe in 2022. Thirty five countries over four months doing their own servicincg and tyre changes as they went along. No mechanical issues. Impressive.
So I bought a used but well sorted Himmy myself. Off to Europe in April.
It's a great bike. A future classic I reckon!
Ride safe. Love and peace.
Hi. Thanks for the channel. If you want to experiment with led headlight bulbs, there's a company called classic car leds that do h4 bulbs, direct fit and work with standard refectors. They come in different colour temperatures so you can avoid the blinding white light, which is counter productive in rain and fog anyway. You can get one's that are the same colour as halogen and when the main beam is on the dip remains lit, which is nice. Around £30. Also use less power than a halogen.
I liked the shot on La Tremola - probably the perfect bike for that stretch of road.
Nice honest review !!! Have you a link for the rec/reg ?
Good fair honest review, will you buy another one!
Great video. Many thanks.
Thanks mate appreciated 👍
Hi mate, great video! One question, has been a problem for you that the ABS cannot be turn off in this version? I am deciding between a bs4 and bs6 version and that is my main concern, thank you!
Loved when he said “If you have the ability to wrench” - a broad Scott coming out with a pure American phrase. No one here in the UK uses the term “wrench” to describe mechanical repairs. Great video.
What’s the word then
@@williamva1544spanner
@@williamva1544 spanner
I noticed that too.
Well, we have spanners, not wrenches (generally). But we wouldn't say "ability to spanner", more like "ability to use a spanner".
Can only imagine how bonded you are to that bike, memories to last a lifetime.
Sorry, I don't speak Scottish, but it looked interesting 🤣🤣🤣 great review mate, loved it, all the best 🇦🇺
I didn't quite catch what you were saying about the glare from the instruments due to the wind. Did you try acetate over the top or find a solution? Cheers
Good review.
watch this because it is honest. I have exactly the same bike and mine has done 10,000 miles. Replaced the bars as they bent after dropping the bike - they bend easily. My clocks also mist up. The front brake is CRAP - I fitted the softest pads I could find and now I have a decent front brake. left over time the battery drains, which means you cannot start the bike. I used a Hitchcocks device to stop that but even now it is always on a trickle charger at home. I replaced the battery with a YUASA and on my trip to Scotland, 9 days (no trickle charger obviously) had no issues. I replaced the relays rather than have issues - too many people complained for me not to take action. On putting in the new relays one of the pins popped out the back of the housing and caused me some issues before I spotted it. Normal riding I baby it sitting at 50 ish - in 8000 miles I never burnt any oil or had to adjust the tappets. My Scotland trip was 2000 miles. First day was two up at 70 MPH for 230 miles in the rain. The wind got up later in the trip and I had to ride in lower gears to maintain momentum. In short she got a good thrashing. This meant that she burnt some oil and needed tappets adjusting upon my return. I broke down 3 times whilst away - all down to the rear brake - it was not allowing fluid to return back into the cylinder so my brake overheated and stuck on. Could not fix it myself and had a mechanic look at it - he said it could have happened to any bike. On a good note when I was running it in I got 100MPG at 40 MPH. 90 MPG at 50 MPH. Both these figures were bringing the bike from St Helens to South Lincs where I live. MOST IMPORTANT The suspension is outstanding for a bike of this size and price. My wife has a bad back and gave up being a pillion. She went for a ride on it as pillion and we did the NC 500 - 2000 miles in 9 days - no ill affects at all. So many thanks wee jaunt for some honesty - The bike is marmite - you either love em or hate em. The Foggster
thank you so much for your insights
Thanks for that mate. aye same issue with the rear caliper around mid may started locking up but it's been fine since the replacement hopefully that will resolve it long term. You are right love them or gate them they have character lol
Just wondering how long you'd leave it to find the battery drained. My Ducati does the same thing. If left for a week without a trickle charger it's a gamble. Is this normal for modern bikes (prior to the Ducati my most modern bike was a '79 bonnie) what with EFI systems and imobilisers etc?
That's seriously good fuel consumption and nice to hear from an actual owner. I'm impressed with the 70 two up. Although i quite like the idea of the Himalayan, my main concern is that I'll find it slightly lacking in cruising speed. I tend not to like having to cane a bike for long, and just wished the Himalayan was 10-15 miles an hour quicker. I'm planning on getting an interceptor, but that seems a big jump from the nice, basic, rugged, Himalayan.
I guess the 450 is an alternative, but for some reason that just don't have the same appeal as the 411. Have you tried any performance mods at all?
@@DirkGentley42 I can leave it for a week, two if I am feeling brave but not recommended.
My new favorite bike guy even though I cannot understand everything he says.😂 going to tell my bike buddies here in LA about this guy.
Thanks mate ima talk slower next time and stay out the wind lol thanks for watching
Understood every wurd, but then I'm fae Renfrewshire.

The new Himalayan is now 452 ccs. Noraly of Itchy Boots loves the extra power........Sal : )
Extra Power?
Almost double. 40 HP vs 24 HP.
Martin any opinion on the new 452 himmy ?? Will you get one ?
In my tropical climate country some owners complain of issues with the cylinder head. Don´t know if they are "full throttle demons" or real cautious customers (we saw a certain Dutch lady travel very long distances on this bike without any related issues). Thanks for the review!
Interesting yes different parts of the world seem to throw up different issues thanks mate
The dutch lady (Itchy Boots) finding that the Himalayan is too heavy, is under powered, (The weight of a Yamaha T7 with 1/3 of the power...) with not so good suspensions has taken a Honda CRFL 300 Rally. I'm not sure it's the best choice as the Honda has simply bad suspensions (you can improve the fork but you have to change ASAP the rear shock), lacks cruelly of power and it's not so light. She spent 2700 USD on a already expensive bike, trying to address the suspensions and other issues.
The ideal ADV light bike would have good 250 mm suspensions, something around 40 HP very sweet and linear, and stay under 140 kg dry. There are rare in the actual market.
@@pabloricardodetarragon2649 Thanks! BTW the "dutch lady" is going to upload a video next wednesday touring the Himmalaya Range on the new RE Hima...
@@tabuleirocmd Interesting. Thanks.
My US spec 2022 is a Euro 4 in Euro 5 clothes. Kind of a hybrid lol… even managed 2 500+ mile trips one 570 in on day and 538 over two days been fun
That's good mate glad it's working out for you
You what? 570 in a day, you're mad or have a very big lack of pubs in your country?
I need a list of all your parts! Did you get Givi crash bars?
Next on my shopping list are engine bars, handguards and some boots! (Gonna do some chain maintenance, proper scrub down).
Any recommendations on adv boots? (Those sidis are quite expensive no?).
Altberg custom made bike boots, they look like army combat boots but are for bikes. Had mine for years still going strong, can't wait to ride back up country and get another pair next spring.
Hi Martin, Are you opening the collaboration now? we looking forward to discussing the details with you.
For a BMW GS with cardan drive, you may need the third shaft at 50,000 km. I personally know two GS owners where this has happened, probably also depends on the skill of the specialist workshop during maintenance?
In my V-Strom was at 30,000 km the gear indicator defective, the machine then no longer wants to start, unless you shift before „dry“ about 10 times up and down, you must then also know 😱
I'm know where near as adventurous as you are, on my RE Himaleyan 411. I do short touring trips and a lot of commuting / sunday riding. I honestly can't fault my Himaleyan, It has its annual full service and MOT and has flown through the past couple of times. It's like any machine. If you thrash it and take it off the road or on extremely long tours, it's going to suffer. The only issue I really had was the front break being a bit shit, but honestly, it's not noticeable until you've really mullered the pads. I usually notice my front break going just before its annual maintenance (service and MOT). The console fog has never happened to me. Mine have always stayed clear and un fogged. Overall its a amazing bike, and my first after passing my A2, I plan on owning it a fair few years yet.
This himalayan is better looking than my bmw 650 after that mileage.
What year is this Himalayan? Asking because maybe RE has rectified some of these common quality issues. Thanks in advance!
Can you get some red film to put over the dials?
Looking forward to the headbearing replacement video. My instrument cluster issue is that the main LCD panel light seems to have a loose contact and mostly stays off. I think it is external because I can rock the cluster and get it to come on.
Really aye good ol' Royal Enfield lol
I remember buying my 2018 thinking this engine won't last. Now 18000 miles still going strong. I have had several cracks develop in the frame.
Do you do lots of jumps?
@@moorshound3243 lots of off roading but not really jumping
Enjoying your vids and great contents.
Can you please tell me which hand guards your using, and are you still using the original bar end weightz with them.
Cheers
Ma,
Replaced the kickstand on my 2022 as it bent with normal use.. ( Hitchcocks adjustable stand much heavier ) Battery died within 1st year replace with Lithium Battery so far so good...Replaced all the relays... Had to adjust the TPS a couple times to fix stalling / idle issues. Forget the dealership here in Texas, this is a bike for people that are mechanically inclined... Reminds me of my bikes in the 1970's... Quality control is lacking as all the rubber hoses and fork boots are falling apart.... I do all my own Maint. and it is very simple. As everyone says for the price you get a great bike that is not built for the Highways here in the US but great around town, secondary roads and dirt roads...For all it's faults I still like it... just do not get one thinking you can just ride and forget it... My brakes are ok for the speeds it is capable of and except for the ABS not always working before the Tires skid they are good. Lol...
I couldn't have said it better myself. Seems to be slightly different experience from different parts of the world regards dealerships, parts, relays etc still a great bike if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.
Agreed!@@WeeJaunt
I get parts quicker from Hitchcocks then my dealer can !@@WeeJaunt
I have taken my 2022 from north Houston/spring tx to Dallas and back and even to Medina and Kerrville and while not fast cruises at 70 for the most part all day!
Yes , I have taken mine on the Highway to Tucson/ Phoenix from El Paso in the Right lane of course ! @@ewetho
Good video 👍
Thanks John
DR400, DR650, KLR 650, HONDA CL500, all superior but RE did make a noise in the market, their line up is brilliant.
Lucky your head bearings made it to 10k miles to be greased. Mine were gone at 4.2k! I'm only up the road from you and I've also had iffy cold starts on my 2022 bike, it's just taken 3 goes for the bike to actually hold idle and then it's been fine.
Oh dear hopefully the new bearings hold up longer
Yep I got BMW bearings in mine now.
A properly used bike.
Is fantastic for the money.
Can't understand all the trolls that need a 100mph trail bike !
Thanks David aye does the job mate
It's not about doing 100 mph, it's about having adequate power to accelerate along with modern traffic and given this bikes lack of power a slight headwind or uphill gradient and it will struggle. This bike has a lower power to weight ratio of a 125 and there's a reason why you don't see 125s on the motorway.
I always set my sat nav to avoid motorways, you don't meet people or get into crazy adventures on motorways, plus the distinct lack of nice old fashion pubs with hearty food and real ale.
You can keep your nasty motorway services food and the endless straight line movement.
Nice update on the bike at 30k
Thanks Nicola
Did you use roller bearings? For the head bearings.?
Yes mate Roller bearings from Koyo if I remember right.
I d like ur accent!
Hi, Are you in Phuket Thailand? I chatted to a visitor that sounds and looks like yourself.
Good bike
Shame about the poor audio. Otherwise an honest review.
The one thing that would put me off ever buying a RE is the woeful performance, according to motorcycle specs the 0-60 time is over 10 seconds, I actually checked other sources thinking that couldn't possibly be right but one site claimed 12.7 seconds? That's waaay too slow to be safe on British roads and considering the top speed is just over 80 mph motorways are definitely a no no, fully loaded with a modest head wind you will be overtaken by hgvs, no, sod that.
Himalayan is getting a upgrade....450cc liquid cooled engine....
For freeway fliers the Himmi falls short, for others it can't do anything right.. for animistic riders that avoid the beaten path and insist in bonding with their almost human mule, it's a winner! 😆
Hmm, do I get a Himalayan, or stick with my 2014 CB500X? The R-E is tempting, but I really like Japanese reliability.
cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
If its ok ..... keep it. Why not? Good Bike!
If the Bike goes down, take the new 450cc Himi "Sherpa". For just 6000€ u get an half Japanese Bike
Simple. Keep the Honda buy a Himalayan to keep it company during the long winter months. (I used to live in Ottawa).

Everyone welcoming new Chinese bikes , amazing what a sticker or badge will do for Chinese bikes
RE is not an Chinese Bike u fool.
Lesson? Buy a good bike in the first place.
get a mike the sound is naff
30K should be nothing for a modern machine…..let’s not make excuses for bad engineering.
Buyers have the opportunity to spend 3x more to get the best. An expensive bike doesn't guarantee being problem free. MCs are price point, ego and dumb luck. 😆
Your audio is pretty bad, I had difficulty hearing you quite often
I know mate I had real problems with wind noise which I had to dampen in post but it affected the sound quality.
Only King Henry VIII would be able to understand fully,I understood about 50% of the accent.
I doubt if King Henry VIII would understand.... that's a Scottish accent! 🤣
He has a perfectly easy accent to listen to , its a big world out there- have you ever realised we all speak differently and that is the joy of it !
Henry 8th was English. James 4th was king of Scotland at that time. 1500’s. Scotland a completely different country to England. It was the Treaty of Union in 1707 that created the Kingdom of Great Britain. The United Kingdom came about in 1801 when Nirthern Ireland joined in.
Many accents and across the UK. Just like in the US or Australia. Someone from New York sounds completely different to a Texan for example.
