When I first read the title, I assumed it was for something like brand new planes being assigned to fresh young pilots on their first missions, with the story documenting the lives of each pilot and how they see the violent, war-torn world they've been thrust into as well as their 'relationships' to their own aircrafts. Kind of in the same vein as Area 88, (another anime you might want to check out. Melodramatic as all hell, but otherwise not bad) Then I saw the anime. sigh. The Male Lead was the worst type of bland Harem Protagonist who that series made a point of making completely useless in the worst way, as in he barely ever wins on his fucking own in any fight! It made sense at the start and early on, but if your going to make him useless and moral support to the actual useful heroines, then you shouldn't have made him a fighter; Also the writers flip floppyness in making the MC important, to trying to downplay his importance and have villains who looked like they were interested in him go "nope wasn't interested in him in the slightest, watch as I try to kill him to prove that" when prior they acted like he was an important piece to their plan, and don't kill him, he's mine! I guess because the creator was scared people weren't paying attention to the fan service.

I mean, if I like the character and it's done well in the narrative (which it rarely is), then I don't mind it. Like in FMA:B, when they faked Maria Ross's death. Then again, I could see the whole reveal where Maria wasn't actually dead coming a mile away, but I digress. But in shows like this one, it was just pure stupidity. It's the same shit that the Akuma no Riddle anime pulled and it's almost always annoying as fuck.
