Lol, I have the US VHS release.
My friends called this movie "The knife of anything slaying."
Yeah, English dubbed anime in the nineties was still in it's infancy. :p

To be fair, there have been a couple good video game franchises involving ninjas. Like Ninja Gaiden (despite being brutally difficult), Shinobi (I heard it was decent), and Strider.

Historically Iga gave Nobunaga a lot of trouble, but a rival ninja clan sold him a map of all the secret roads and castle/mansions in Iga, thereby allowing Nobunaga to roflstomp the Iga ninja for their impertinence.

Ninjas are fun, especially when you hand everyone in your D&D group the Legend of the Five Rings expansion book, and you tell them that they can also be any of the classes from that. Then the entire party is suddenly made out of ninjas. I literally took my campaign, put it in the trash, and went off on a completely made up on the spot campaign. It ended rather well, as they were hired to kill a guy as well as frame the murder on another guy from a rival kingdom to start a war. It ended really well. With half the party dead, and the other half having succeeded and deciding halfway through the campaign at level 10 to multiclass to sorcerer or wizard. And then they were able to use spells with their hands, and it was awesome.

I think the relationship between Ayame and Kikyo was basically cut out other than the death scene for two reasons.
    1) It was two women in a yuri (if not lesbian) relationship, and that was frowned on back then. They had to keep the death scene in because it was part of her "awakening".
    2) Kikyo was also the little sister of Ryoma, so she was basically dating the sister of one of the other main characters. Another little awkward thing.
    Censorship. Gotta love it!

Man, Japan sure does love demonizing the Guy who tried to end war by uniting Japan and fixing some of it's problems by doing his damnedest to change the status quo, who freed a African Jesuit Slave whom he made a samurai and his retainer (Yes Really), and generally only cared if those working for him were competent instead of nobles.
Though points for having Ranmaru playing him the whole time, i can't see many people predicting that.

Nobonaga not only was the person who basically les the war and win it but he was also the person after he helped defeat the Shogunate turn on the Emperor because he didn't like him allowing western influence and started a civil war between the last of the Samurai and the Emperor. He is Herald as "the last true samurai" but they demonize him for turning his back on the country he helped build.
      Interesting stuff

ShadowWolfRising It was all accomplished, of course, by tactics such as the indiscriminate massacre of entire villages accused of harbouring Nobunaga's enemies, to say nothing of the fact that a prominent Buddhist monastery full of warrior monks joining the coalition of his enemies also drove him to enact random brutal reprisals against Buddhists all over Japan. I think Nobunaga's critics don't exactly belong to the "end justifies the means" kind of crowd.

+pyrolee17 Ranmaru historically was sort of like Smithers. Like how Smithers helps Mr. Burns, even in personal matters, as a wakashu (page/apprentice) Ranmaru would of had to help Nobunaga in certain tasks. It would seem that Ranmaru and Smithers further share the similarities of adoring the man they care for, however Nobunaga and Ranmaru's case doesn't seem to be one sided unlike Mr. Burns and Smithers .

What was the first movie played in your video?

  • @Crowley9

I am unfamiliar with the details of video encoding, so what are B-frames and how do they affect the picture? Are they perhaps the reason why picture keeps nudging up and down ever so slightly?

    • @ceresbane
      @ceresbane 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Crowley9 as a person that just used google it is as follows. bi-directional interpolated prediction frames, or B frames for short.
It is a type of mpeg encoding that uses the frames in the source file in both directions to compress the resulting file while retaining some quality. In other words its a setting for burning dvds, if you cheap out on crap dvds with little actual capacity as it uses less frames than a version that has this setting turned off. Resulting in lower quality but smaller file size without losing the original aspect ratio (size of the video on screen).
you tend to notice it when there is blur in the motion.

In answer to your question Bennett, I think the oboro didn't know about Ranmaru's plan. At the beginning, when Ranmaru scolds Jinnai for failing to kill Ayame and Sakon the first time, he apologises, but it's not to Ranmaru. He apologises to Nobunaga and when Nobunaga threatens him if he is to fail again, Jinnai promises to fullfil the mission, even at the cost of his own life. This makes me think Ranmaru gave the oboro the idea they're job was to kill the 3 ninja, without realising they were to be sacrificed to further his own goal, the same way he did with Ryoan to guide them to kill the oboro. Later on when Kiheji talks about their 500 year dream being realised while fighting Sakon, I don't think he knows the oboro's version of the dream, isn't the same as Ranmaru's. Even Nobunaga didn't know that he was being used as a pawn and was fed a different story by Ranmaru that he would have enough power to dominate Japan.

As to what Ranmaru's true goal is, you'd have to watch the OVA version because it's not stated why he is actually doing what he is doing in the movie version. It also explains the connection between the 3 ninja's swords and Ranmaru, because it's more than he simply gave them to each village when they were united as one.

    Hey Sage, I'm back.
    4:03 Forget about the Galgameks?!
    4:16 Okay, fancy back flip...and?
4:23 Kazumi Three Way Thrust? Bow chick bow wow.
    4:37 Oh really now?
    5:15 Are those Tengu?
5:23 I just managed to hear the music...um...It sounds like someone playing on a comb like Flanders did. In other words, a fart.
5:27 Oh, good to see you're on top of my jokes.
5:43 Took the words right out of my mouth.
6:05 Is it just me, or does this guy sound like Him?
    6:20 So Him. got it.
6:52 *Opens mouth. Pauses* I'm not even going to comment about that sentence you just said. Bad Sage. Do that Outside.
7:20 Let me guess. Small skirmish, leader of these ninjas joins them? Somewhere in that ball park?
7:30 No, sorry Sage, beat them too it. Also, CALLED IT!
7:56 Anyone else tired of everyone dissing Nobunaga? Good, glad to hear it.
8:03 Oh good, you know that one too.
8:40 Are we going for the, "My brother died, so I became a ninja." Then later on, "Brother I thought you were dead!" Followed by, "I work for the bad guy now." Leading into the killing of said brother who then does the, "I did it to protect you" thing?
9:20 I am acting. (Sorry Critic, needed that joke)
9:36 Oh, you mean an Izuna Drop. Why that move is called such I may never know.
10:02 Not only does she look like her, but her name is the same too!?
10:08 EXACTLY. Two words Sage. Boot...Leg.
    11:00 Uh, yeah...Except he's not necessarily a bad guy.
12:48 Okay, I was going to comment about the Oboro guy sounding Jamaican man, but your joke was too obvious.
13:55 Okay, you could do that with almost any anime that lingers too long on a scene.
14:50 I see this demon went to the Akira school of exploding things with your mind.
17:35 Sorry, phased out there for a bit. Now I'm back to seeing the biggest pause before a "HUH?" moment when it should be an "Oh!"
18:00 Wait what?! I mistook the Oboro thing for something else. Why?
18:12 Umm...What made you think that was a good idea? It's like the Iran-Contra thing. (Topical...kinda)
18:45 So...You're telling me that you wanted your Demon leader to die, so that his energy mixed with ninjas would open a portal to the underworld...But if these weapons had that power, why couldn't you have done this yourselves?
    19:09 Yeah, same here.
    20:01 RIGHT?!
Amon Saga...where have I heard that name before. Oh well, just have to wait a week or two to find out. It's been a pleasure reviewing your review, and I'll see you next time.
Also, I do hope you see this, as I will continue as long as you pump out content, or until you...ahem...Notice me Sempai.

If the OVA was only three episodes, and the movie's a whole 90 minutes, I don't see how that much could have been cut?

    • @fiveoctaves
      @fiveoctaves หลายเดือนก่อน

Each episode was about 40 minutes totaling more that 120 minutes so nearly a third of it was cut.
