"We overshot Jupiter and are now entering orbit around Uranus."
Man, this film set itself up perfectly with that line and you didn't take advantage of it. I am disappoint.

I think you and I saw the same anime block you're talking about, Sage.
Spring of 1997 on the Sci-Fi channel: Odin, Robot Carnival, Roujin Z, Tenchi Muyo in Love, Project A-Ko, Akira, Lily C.A.T., Dominion Tank Police and a few others. A new one every Saturday morning, packaged in block running for a few months.
    Good memories right there.

Laser-powered spacecraft actually ARE feasible and have been proposed; they operate on micro-pressure from light, just like solar sails would. Are they efficient? Fast? Not so much. Also, they would NOT look like sailing ships of old.
Also, those fighters are totally Gunstars from The Last Starfighter.

You lucky kids, today . . .and yesterday. I had no cable growing up, on top of which there was no anime on there even when I WAS a kid. Nope, only had the good fortune of an open minded, locally owned, rental place with those classic titles on the shelves. And Robot Carnival was so niche, I had to find it at the library. And all these were on VHS, mind. Uphill!!

Bet you anything that the Mcguffin guy was featured working on his little trinket for an extended 4-minute long sequence in the 2-hour cut. Just like that whole scene in The Star Wars Holiday Special!!

The J-Metal song featured in this movie is "Gotta Fight" by Loudness. The song does seem out of place in this film, I will admit, but the song on it's own is really good. Same case in point for the power balled, "Odin" also by Loudness. They're actually very much worth while great songs for any fan of '80s rock & metal. Both songs clearly have a lot of passion put into them & you can tell the band truly love what they do. The same band also contributed 2 songs to the 2010 OVA, Mazinkaiser SKL, "The Eternal Soldier" & "The Danger Zone".

So how does the ship go to hyperdrive anyway. Its not self propelled. Do they call back to earth and tell them to turn the pushy laser up to 11? And then how do they slow down to stop at their target?

My introduction to anime was through the Toonami slot on Cartoon Network. Tenchi Muyo, DBZ and Gundam Wing, good stuff when its all new and unfamiliar. It opened a door into a huge, huge genre of other movies, series' and animation.

Started off with starblazers and go lion voltron back in the early 80's. Then really got back into it in the late 90's.
Any way, watch this movie then Be Forever Yamato and notice the re-use of character designs in both movies. Also how many other sci-fi anime movies of the time period had a rock soundtrack? I can think of 1 other, and it's the one where they killed Optimus Prime.
Don't be haters on this movie, the ship looks nice and the animation is very well done.

Pretty sure SciFi showed Vampire Hunter D at least once when I was like 9 or 10. The scene of the werewolf killing the horse is where I tapped out, I believe it terrified me. Recognizing that scene years later as an adult and realizing it traumatized my child self badly enough to sear those context-less images into mind so clearly was kinda fun and surreal.

Sci-Fi channel? Pfft. My first exposure to anime was watching Harmony Gold's Dragon Ball dub on some god-forsaken network channel with my Dad back in '89 when I was four.
Of course, I didn't understand the concept of anime until I caught the subtitled version of MD Geist on some cable channel at a friend's house. Yeah. MD fucking Geist was what revealed the truth about anime to me. Not only were these cartoons from Japan, but they could have gore and tits. It didn't take long for me to figure out that DBZ and Sailor Moon were Japanese, and start wondering what I was missing out on. After that, it's a pretty familiar lineup. Tenchi Muyo, Digimon, even more DBZ, and the show that would eternally cement my obsession with mecha: Gundam Wing. Splash in a few bootlegged VHS's of the subtitled DBZ films, subtitled and eventually dubbed Evangelion (another lifelong obsession), subtitled Utena, and, of all fucking things, the dubbed version of Jungle de Ikou.
My formative years as an otaku got weird in a few places.

pfft, md giest. I remember when American cartoons still had balls. wizards, fire and ice, and heavy metal 2000 were defiantly adults only, secret of NIMH probably counted as pg-13 back when pg-13 still meant no one under 13, hell even the cartoons intended for kids had a couple scenes that were guaranteed to cause a few nightmares because trauma builds character.
unfortunately Disney, and wb started to buy up all the smaller animations studios in the mid 90's and after that artistic creativity started to suffer. But you still had the occasional gem like batman and gargoyles.

I know I am really late to make a comment on this video, but I think ‘six days from earth’ means if there were use a standard space flight engine (whatever standard is for them) because I’m pretty sure it’s said that this monstrosity ship they have is the fastest they’ve made yet because of the ‘laser sails’ bullshit. I don’t remember it is a forgettable movie a saw about a hundred times. Also on a video from like 2013 I doubt anyone cares. (I’m just shotgunning through the huge backlog Bennett has.
