Too real, Sprigg. Too real.

Sam honestly did a wonderful job on this. even though he claims not to know the rules of DnD very well, it's obvious that everyone at the table had a lot of fun. and I like that it didn't go the way that a traditional battle royale would
I still feel he knows the rules better than most of the rest of the cast He was clutch in so many situations as Scanlon and very much helpful as Nott.
Not saying the rest of the cast don't know how to play the game I just feel Sam is probably one of the most competent players in comparison
@@JoeChianelli Fun fact: it is possible to both know the rules and have fun. Idk why this gets presented as a binary choice so much. I don't think Sam not knowing the rules for opportunity attacks is what made the game more fun lmao.
Sam's favorite thing to do seems to be claiming ignorance, while being a master planner. He basically bluffs at life. :)

This is nearly four hours of proof that Darin De Paul is the most wholesome human being on earth, as well as a hell of a powerful actor. Also, I would absolutely love to see Sam as a DM again!
Such a good actor! For a little while I only knew him as the voice of Ardyn from Final Fantasy XV, who's a fantastically loathsome villain, so imagine my surprise when I got to Sprigg's episodes in Campaign 1 and saw how sweet Darin is and sounds IRL!
@@myrmidonmamori That is the perfect description of my own reaction when I learned he's Escharum in Halo Infinite.
As someone who DM'd their first game ever yesterday, I found Sam's DM style of 'Don't know a rule? make a ruling and move on' oddly inspiring. (I watched it a few days ago.) It really helped me relax and not stress about not knowing everything.
Right on! That’s how it’s supposed to be. Don’t let some stranger’s made up nonsense get in the way of your made up nonsense! It’s about you and your friends and not a damn thing else.
That's how old skool Dnd was always supposed to be! Rulings, not rules. It's great!
Yup. Rule 0 is the most important rule: Have fun. The manuals, handbooks, and modules are just guides. Don't like a rule because it makes the game un-fun for your players? Houserule something more convenient! Don't know a rule? Make up something that makes sense in the moment!
Even rules lawyering, if present, should be in service of the _fun._
Yup, that's how I DM too. I'll usually say "I don't know! I'll go with x for now, but if someone wants to look in the book and let me know that'd be cool!"
On the other hand, many of his off-the-cuff rulings ended up actually denying players options that they should have had access to. You shouldn't sweat being forced to make a call in the middle of play as a best guess, but the game as a whole functions a lot better if you do have a fairly thorough understanding of the rules.
Sam can say what he wants about knowing how to play, the only way to win at D&D is when everyone at the table is having an absolute blast. He knocked it out of the park. Darin was the MVP doing amazing things with how Sprigg perceived things to what currents he chose to ride on. It was masterful.
I bet that deep-down some part of Matt Mercer was laughing diabolically and shouting "Now you know how it feel when the characters go completely off the rails!!"
There was no deep down, he was like Loki from Thor Ragnarok going "Yes! That's how it feels!"
This is like Sam's 5th or 6th oneshot? Lol. The man is adapted to dm improv. Matt has sympathy and a cruelty with dms and i love it. One time names where super close and everytime the dm got them mixed up Matt was like "ha!"
I wanted badly to see the next ep of the 3rd campaign but this one shot was great. Sam is a filthy liar everytime he said "idk how to play d&d!" ;p
I imagine that Mercer texted Sam after like "You played a rogue, how do you atleast not remember how they work?? That was even your subclass"
Very fun to watch tho
Every dm is thinking this to some degree
Sam lives for this shit, he wants them to go off rails
13:55 Sam's face during this is killing me, the realization that there's another person with the same kind of chaotic energy sitting at the table
"You have my word ... as a broadcaster"
- all the artists in the room explode in laughter.
artists: oh wait, were you being serious? let me laugh even louder xD
It's not just the artists. Engineer here, been watching talking heads "sensationalize" (lie) about new technological developments for almost exactly as long as Darin's been playing Sprig. Yeah, that's about as good as someone's word as a politician.
@@jesterssketchbook I was thinking about the cast of actors / voice-actors (artists), or people living in Los Angeles, California. :P
Anjali, jokingly: "You better roll a 22 to find that thing."
Also Anjali: **rolls a 22**
I was thinking the same
I see Sam has really brought out his best Hunger Games host cosplay
Third best, actually.
Yeah I really love Sam's costume. He did a great job cosplaying as Flickerman 10/10
After all these years, I would not be surprised if that was just with his normal clothes.
What do you mean cosplay? This is just normal Thursday evening wear for Sam
Hunger Games?! He's clearly going for Tim Curry!
Darin De Paul is a gem of a human being. Every time Sprigg spoke I was about to burst into tears because I know the meaning of his character and the importance it had on the show, especially for him. I absolutely love how this Battle Royale turned out. It was a blast from beginning to end. 💖
I really do find it funny how, compared to all the past battle royales, where all the people who were in the same party and were basically family mercilessly went after each other, all of these strangers were mostly super chill and kind and didn't want to hurt anyone else
I think the longer you know someone, the more likely it is that you can reach back into your memory and think of a time where you absolutely wanted to kill them for something, even if you dearly love them most of the time.
@@ethanrapp6998
I think it is simply a result of attitude. Whenever the cast did battle royales in the past, they wanted to do a *battle royale* specifically. That was what they were there to do. This in comparison is still the cast wanting a battle royale, but the guests don't actually have any specific reason to do a battle royale, they are just there to play, you know? They obviously knew it was *supposed* to be a battle royale, but they don't have the same motivation to stick to that concept as the cast usually does.
Came for a Battle Royal, Walked out with a One-Shot Adventure. Amazing.
If there was ever a perfect example of how D&D never goes the way you expected, and that's a good thing, it's this.
Holy Shit! BigKlingy i Didn't expect to see you Here, Question, are you going to ever play FE Blazing Sword on the channel? Also Hi
Darin and Sumalee’s role play was my favourite part of this Nila & Sprigg were just so cute
God, I love Darin DePaul SO FUCKING MUCH!!! I cry so much whenever I see him, either from laughter or from sadness.
He's just so wholesome, and his vocal range is insane.
Kashaw: *slowly roasting over the pit of lava*
Also, Kashaw: Still better than my 15th birthday.
For me the funniest thing was just reminder every round that Kashaw was being smoked while slowly floating in the air.
Sprigg is amazing! He went into a Battle Royale playing a pacifist and succeeded. I hope Darin De Paul returns as a guest to the main campaign at some point.
I completely agree. I want Darin De Paul to return as Sprigg.
Don't know whether it would make sense to integrate Sprigg into C3 timeline wise, but a new character would be great as well. Sprigg is amazing either way!
I'm also really looking forward to seeing sprigg animated during the later seasons of the animated series (which will hopefully be produced at some point). :)
What makes Sprigg's actions here even better is that, according to Darin, Sprigg used to be Chaotic Evil (possibly during the game with Matt's mother). He's not only trying to make up for his past mistakes, but making sure others don't go down the path he once did.
@@BigKlingy I can just imagine the kind of fuckery a CE gnome with spells and sneak attack dice could get around to.
I expected Sprigg to make me laugh. I was unprepared for him making me cry.
Also, I love the contrast between fierce, fiery Fy'ra Rai, "I do not do it for you!" and Anjali smiling and saying, "I got these dice from my friends!"
Don't forget Anjali stopping herself from making the obvious dirty joke when the potion of enlarge was found.
Indeed Anjali fiery voice rolling on her Rai character is truely something
The longer Darin De Paul remains on Critical Role, the stronger he will become
I hope they do another Doom run through and he gets to actually play Dr Hayden this time. Not just as the VA to goad the players through the plot, but as an actual skinny robot with the consciousness of a Lawful Evil mad scientist, going against the Doomslayer.
One day he’ll become a god cus of this show, and I honestly can’t wait
The stronger we all become.
The dude is just so classy. I genuinely hope he enjoys the show enough to be a regular guest, if nothing else.
This is an excellent show of GMship from Sam. The players clearly went in a very different direction than he had planned and expected. But rather then forcing them into his planned narrative, he adapted and improvised to play of the decisions the players chose.
Anjali's voice is so amazing, my jaw drops pretty much every time she speaks.
I just love that Sprigg mostly just dealt "guilt" damage once Tova tried to hit him.
Sam may not know the rules of D&D very well offhand, but he’s honestly really good at improvising to keep momentum up. Rifling through books and websites to find the “correct” rule really halts gameplay sometimes, so it’s usually better to just come to a very quick consensus at the table for what should be done.
Matt is incredibly good at finding the correct rule really fast. I am often blown away by how fast he finds a rule after he opens the book.
"If your players are having fun, then you did good."
- Matthew Colville
I wonder what alternate universe version of Spurt was able to win one of these.
Really must have made the most of those eleven days.
I bet his wish would have been to live longer than any kobold in history: twelve days
That was my immediate thought as well. I'm assuming some sort of home alone/baby's day out sort of situation. Mostly the latter, but he's got his stinger stick and stuff too.
This is why he said "I win" right before he died. At least, that's what's in my head
He learned to hide, and just shanked the last survivor.
"Grody "Take yourself down" is for sure the line of the episode, and it didn't even get a reaction- AMAZING word play by Sam as always
We came expecting a battle, but we got an amazing story instead. Darin is an absolute master storyteller, and Sam just rolling with it made this a phenomenal one-shot. Will/Kashaw were also playing a great heel for the show.
It was a freaking disaster view wise. Just like the show.

Okay but Sprigg's intro song is EVERYTHING. CR needs more song!
they could really do with bringing music back into their characters but everyone's scared to even try since scanlan's singing bits were so iconic
@@hsmoscout i would totally settle for just a little spontanous singing now and then in campaign three. Doesn't have to be perfect or rehearsed. With a faun and a bard I feel like there is ample opportunity.
Gotta hand it to Nila, it's fair game to take the Volcano when the Jungle would have been a huge advantage for her given her Speech of the Woods feature. Though, the Volcano does give a little advantage to Fy'ra
Fr, I was expecting jungle but was pleasantly surprised.

I love how they just spit in the face of the premise, and Sam was just like, “well, I guess this is what’s happening!”
What else was he supposed to do, say "No" and detonate their battle royale collars? Frankly it's a sign of good DMing, not rules knowledge per se: the ability to take whatever the players are doing to derail your story and Yes-And it.
@@romxxii actually yes. Why have battle royale collars if you are not going to use them. Well they should not be a souped up powerword kill where they get anyone below 450 hp but still. Have the villain have security for this nonsense. Of course this nonsense should be possible but it should be 1000000 times easier to play along. If you are running an arena of gladiatorial combat you need ways of making sure your slaves don’t rebel. It’s basic immersion.
@@Markcrazeer Strikes me as an odd take that Sam, as a guest DM should have executed very popular guest characters because they found a fun and creative way around the 'kill each other' concept.
I get that it may have been a let down if you were expecting a proper shtifight, but this went off the rails in such a hilariously absurd way that only a jerk of a DM would have tried to force it either way. Sam is many things but a jerk DM I just can't picture. This was fun and silly which was always the intention. Its basic immersion not to destroy the creative decisions of your players because it doesn't fit the way you wanted a session to go.
@@padraigroberts6194 Sam is not/should not be a jerk dm that should punish the players for creativity getting around the premise. That is not my point.
however geryon is a killer gm running a gladiatorial death game (he promises it’s a dream) he should have as many ways of keeping this nonsense on the rails as possible and Sam should use them to keep trying to break the game show as a hard challenge. Much harder than just playing the game as designed.
I have not seen how they break the game yet but I did say the collars should not be collars of can kill any pc regardless of hp no save. That is what geryon should have installed to keep his game running smoothly (might hurt ratings.) but that is no fun (maybe unless he only activates one of them, (ideally an npc but there are none) thus cuing the others in that if they want to break this game they need to make sure these collars don’t work.) if they do not do something like blow up with the power of a meteor swarm (or fireball.) then what is the point of having collars.
This is not about being a jerk dm where the creative solution to bypass the thing is not possible it is about playing a jerk game show host that is smart enough that breaking the game is difficult but arrogant enough that it is not impossible, that is my point.
I did want the other battle royals to also just break the premise and find some way to save everyone. The main point being this is not how you are supposed to play the game meaning the gm (not dm) should have some ways of preventing such shenanigans especially when he did introduce the collars already why are they there if not to punish unruly contestants I guess they are mics but they feel like bomb collars. So use them.
@@Markcrazeer You make a fair point, and I honestly think that there were points early on where Sam might have brought the collars into play, but once it became apparent that the party was having so much fun it would have been poor form to use them as devices to keep the game 'on the rails'. Garyon was played as the murderous host, but you can clearly see the turn where Sam realises that 'incompetent host in over his head' would be more fun given the path the party chose to head down.
I feel like this is less a matter of what a good DM should have done to keep it within the confines of a battle royal and more a matter of what would be the most amusing thing to let happen.
There are multiple times where Sam could have decided against allowing for it to go so silly, but it is clear that he makes a deliberate choice to just let it happen.
If this was a series I would likely feel different, but as a one shot featuring guests the only reasonable choice once it becomes clear where the party is heading is to roll with it.
Sam: Lets do PVP!
Darin: Got it, Pacifist mode it is!
Aargh, I love these folk. Kash is my favourite guest to have ever been in CR. Glad to see him back in the game.
Agreed. A big part of me was hoping Will and Grace would have become regulars after Orion left. Will in particular brought a much needed tactical mind to the group.
I love how well Will leaned into being the only dead party member. He didn't sulk about how Sam's generous lava splash damage basically killed him, but kept with the vibe of the episode. He also was so encouraging about other player's awesome moves or gifts (like the fire elemental for Nila). That's the model of a good D&D player right there.
Why does sam look so unironically good with the purple hair and glitter
Because Sam looks good in everything
Step 1: Be attractive
Step 2: Don't be unattractive
Because he can't be older than 29 😉

No one wants a Murderhobo for a DM.
I know some people don't like the fact that this wasn't a traditional battle royale - mainly because they didn't fight - but by far this is my favourite of all the battle royales they have done.
Everyone is having so much fun and there's a real story here, something the others don't really have. Even if they had all fought, Sam did such a good job at creating a humorous world for the fight to exist in and rolled with the punches so well. This is, in my opinion, way more fun than watching 5 characters I half remember get into the nitty gritty of combat for 4 hours.
But if you didn't like it, that's fair enough. It wasn't exactly what it was advertised as. I just don't think anyone should say Sam was a bad DM for not being harsher when they all had so much fun
Sam and everyone did an amazing job here it was epic! Also bringing back the legend Darin De Paul was bloody brilliant! We need more Darin in critical role please!
Surprisingly narrative and way more audience-engaging than most PvPs I've seen. My nitty-gritty arse would be caught 100% off guard in that environment lol
What platform were you watching.
@@timd4524 I watched on Twitch.
Watching this was crazy. You honestly can't tell whether Darin is clueless sin what he is doing (not even taking advantage of using an ability to avoid damage), or is an absolute genius, in storytelling as Sprig.
Either way, everyone did a great job at this "battle" Royale. Showing that D&D is not made strictly for PVP but that it can work that way.
it's definitely the latter.
TBF, this character was probably originally built under AD&D 2nd ed rules (40 years ago would've been early 80's). The difference between 2nd and 5th editions is so stark they might as well be entirely different RPGs. For starters, there is no disengage in AD&D, as there was no Attack of Opportunity until 3rd ed. Hell, when 3e came out some people didn't even understand AoO properly and used it to attack at will (I remember reading some Einstein on the Internet bragging about using his Combat Reflexes feat to attack 5 times during his turn).
Y'all are lucky you no longer have to look at hit tables, or worse, _THAC0._
I had a feeling he wasn't adding anything to his ability checks most of the time! Still an absolute champion of this battle royale.
@@wilfredfurey I know. I should have clarified it a bit better. He did state Sprigg was his very first character. Darin is not clueless, but Sprigg is, so that's how he plays.
@@Grayson.P I like that logic, it works with Darin's deranged genius perfectly. Also, Darin's from theatre, he's an ACTOR!!! For him, story is life.

This session is just so cute. Like a group of friends playing for the first time
This episode was chaotic and fun and I loved Sam’s happy go lucky DM style. Great Work Sam.
I want to find my ring of invisibility, mostly for sentimental reasons. Liam (offstage) "That was a loaner!"
Somewhere in a forrest a ray of light gently finds its way to the tired eyes of a gnome who slowly gets up from the ground as a metallic object slides of his head. A trophy falls into the lush grass in front of him. "How did that get there?" he says looking around. He shrugs picks it up and begins his walk home with a smile on his face. :)
Why would you write that?? 😭😭
Wouldn't he actually wake up in Ioun's library, though? Or did they take a version of him from earlier in his timeline?
I love that despite being given the opportunity to drop wildshape and actually do shit multiple times, Sumalee stuck to her guns and decided to roleplay as a giant frog. It's not the smart player decision, but it sure as hell is the most entertaining one.

It's definitely a 'Sams brand' deal, i think he purposely downplays a lot of things in the name of being humble or appearing unintimidating. Def got that feel with the crash pandas, wouldn't be surprised if he knew more about cars than Travis. He really is an amazing team player.
Sam Riegel, the national treasure just made a wonderfully enjoyable experience for all of us. This was so fun and silly. I loved every second.
I need to see Chris Perkins play Spurt and win the next one of these.
Yup, this is exactly how a "Sam Riegel running a Battle Royal as an in game host" would go 😂 Now that I've seen it it feels like I should have been expected it.
Honestly after seeing this... I really hope they DO meet in the real world at some point, because they have incredible party dynamics.. They need to play a whole campaign together!!
I missed Kash! He has the most interesting back story! I still really want to see his story play out.

I was mostly listening to this and my first thought upon seeing Will was: "Oh, it's Matt's stunt double!"
I had to look up if they're related lol Someone in this group really laughs like Matt too so it was really throwing me off.
wonder if this is his gimmick for the next mini primetime series
Can we please have a spinoff, one shot, small or otherwise with this small group of 5? Id love for them to meet and have a small adventure.
This just might be my favorite battle royal ever. Did not see it going down this way at all, but I was there for all of it.
Wanted to give a HUGE congrats to Critical Role for The Legend of Vox Machina series. I only got through 2 videos before it reached number one with over 600 reviews. That's absolutely impressive!!!! All 3 episodes rocked!!! Can't wait to see what's next. As of a few seconds ago, I looked and it is still the number 1 series in the US!!! 🙂
Happy to report that it's at number 1 in Russia as well :)
@@damned0wl Hopefully it will become a global hit 🙂
I'm just starting the episode and I love ND enthusiasm, great to have them back and playing with critical role
Sprigg is the best character of this adventure and he and the other characters derailed the story in a good way.
I feel like of anyone, Sprigg would be one to actually remember this, but he wouldn’t know if it was real or a dream or what
I love how quickly this went completely off the rails
Darin De Paul is an awesome actor, and I loved seeing him reprise Sprigg in a nigh game breaking way here.
I love that this is set in an alternate universe! It’s incredibly clever and the way Sam DMs this oneshot is incredible!
Here to stan Anjali and Fy’ra! 🔥 I’m so happy to have seen them in this one-shot. The world needs more badass characters (of a faith, no less) with sturdy moral codes. And Anjali herself is the utmost lovable. ☺️
How cool is it that Sprigg was a character Darren played in a D&D game with Matt Mercer's Mom nearly 40 years ago?
now i really want an NPC battle royale, with the actors who voice them in LOVM to play Kima, Gilmore, Jarret, Allura and maybe Cassandra to face off
It was really good seeing an older dnd player, cool to see how his play and rp style varies from what im used to.
Whose Roll is it Anyway, where the dice don’t matter and the rules are made up. Totally loved this episode!!!! Sam totally BSed his way through this and it was hilarious. Thank you, Sam. And Darin de Paul?????? I think I’m in love with that man! And Sprigg. He completely turned this whole thing in its ear and made it beautiful. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Arden Izunia himself graces Critical Role. And I miss Fy’ra Rai. Her interactions with Dorian were intense & she was cool. I hope they meet again in Campaign 3 or EXU2
I have the opposite: gave up on EXU because of her. I tried one episode, then another where I just skipped through all the bits where she talked (and talked and talked), and ended up not seeing the third episode she was in and the ones after that. She somehow took so much space, seemingly trying to take the shine from the rest; I couldn't stand it.
@@EelcoWind gosh, same. I didn't give it up, and it's not really on her as she was great in undeadwood and other stuff, it's just that the show didn't have time for a guest character that stayed that long and she seemed to fill the exact same role as orym for me in a less fluid way. I loved the other episodes tho and liked the ending
@@artie9940 - It might also not have been the player (though I do think she enjoyed the center of attention too much, to the point of taking away shine from others at times), but just the character. But, if she were to come to CR3, it will be this same character.
No problem, plenty of plot-summaries I can find and some highlight videos so I can still follow the story without having to cringe through the episodes muting every time she speaks, and then I'll pick it up when she's out again.
I just don't hope it will come that far.
Sprigg is delightful, and any additional Will Friedle at the table is always a good thing. Also loved Sam DM-ing this, what a fun session :)
Oh boy, this one will give rule lawyers a fit.
Hehe. The first time, I had to take a break after an hour (because I was initially blown away Sam felt he did not know the rules: he does really; just the stress and first time DMing and all). Then I came back excited by the prospect the players might fight back!
Rules lawyers may have some small points. They missed a readied smiley wand action that might have been a lot of fun.
@@Baraz_Red this isn't sams first time dming tho
Help me I'm shaking, how can it be so fun when it's just so wrong! (/s Sam did a great job, I've got no words for an amazing game of intended pvp)
was painful
NGL I have had this exact scenario happened when our GM tried to do a battle royale. Laughed so hard
Great work Sam, was a difficult one and you managed it perfectly with the knowledge of the D&d rules you have and the ones you need to learn. more to see we hope....
glad to know that spurt after dying in a cavern, got isekai'd into a battle royale where he actually won.
I LOVED it. Sam was great, whether he knows all the rules or not. He did great and his guests had a blast and that's what really matters!!! The whole one shot was hilarious and adorable (Sprigg and Nila) and was such a joy to watch! I'd love to see more of Sam and others doing one shots!!!
NILA!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ my heart leapt when I saw Suma! She was my favorite guest from Campaign 2
I love Sam's attitude during this so much, I know he isn't comfortable DMing but I love it when he does
