    Learn more about your gut brain axis from Dr. Nikki DiNezza here: / @gutmicrobiomequeen
    Your gut health directly impacts your mental health. From nutrient absorption that impacts the physical building blocks of the brain, to inflammation which can lead cytokines to damage the brain, to your microbiome which impacts your physical and mental health, your gut health is actually a huge contributing factor to your mental health. So in this video you’ll learn 4 1/2 ways to improve your gut health, which can improve your mental health. So real quick, let’s talk about the gut-brain-microbiome axis.
    Every emotion has a brain component and a gut component- notice how many emotions are described as “A gut feeling, a kick in the gut, gut wrenching, sick to my stomach, butterflies in the stomach, etc.” During sleep, and when we dream the gut reacts to emotions and processes them, the gut literally works through the feelings of the day. So when the brain is healthy, and works through emotions, the gut can process emotions too. And vice versa.
    We can help our gut be healthier by decreasing stress and increasing positive experiences. And we can help our brain be healthier by improving our gut health. And one of the best ways to do that is to foster a healthy microbiome.

      There is so, so much that can be done to promote gut microbiome health. You covered the 4 most important things in this video, but I will also share that a lot of "healthy eating" and "healthy living" advice has some research pointing back to the microbiome.
      - Sleep: Your gut microbes have a circadian rhythm just like you do! It's called the "microbial clock"
      - Exercise has been shown to increase gut microbiome diversity (meaning that it makes the microbiome healthier) and promote proper motility
      - Yoga 2x per week has been shown to be equally effective as the low FODMAP diet in helping people with IBS
      - Don't overdo simple/processed sugar: We've all heard this before for metabolic health, but it's important for keeping yeast in the gut in check, too!
      Great video, as always, Emma!

      Dr. DiNezza does this mean that a certain eating window is best for the gut bacteria? I am terrible at fasting and sometimes wake up between 2-4 am to eat a meal so I can go back to sleep. Is there a minimum fasting amount that we need?

    • @gutmicrobiomequeen
      @gutmicrobiomequeen ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Joannabanana1989 I don't think it's even that complicated. Based off of my experience and the research, I'd say most people would do well to simply:
      - Eat at approximately the same time every day (and not skip meals)
      - Eat 3 "square meals" a day with a good balance of all the macros (carbs, protein, fat), fiber, and color at each meal
      - Limit processed sugar (in the words of Michael Pollan, "treat treats as treats")
      Sometimes, I'll have people eat some snacks, too, particularly if they are trying to gain weight or if they are malnourished. Another time when I might consider that is folks who struggle with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

    Gut health is so important and so tightly linked to mental health. We literally have a "second brain" in our gut. The gut microbes have a lot of natural connections to us just like the brain has. I'm so glad you did a video on this. When I was diagnosed with stress induced IBS I had to start prioritising my gut health. I started taking a multistrain probiotic everyday and it helped gratefully. It was about 22 billion cfu's. There were foods that I had become intolerant to and had to cut out completely. I avoid fodmap foods as much as possible. I can safely say I'm a lot happier than I used to be. And I'm not experiencing a lot of stomach pain like I once did. I still get the occasional bloating and upset stomach but way less than before.

    Interesting info! Back in late November, I made the connection between what I was eating and the effects on my mental health. I’d been really suffering with lots of anxiety and had seen a few doctors (pcp, cardiologist, neurologist, obgyn, etc) and not one mentioned my diet, however ALL suggested anti-depressants.. But one night after a particularly high carb dinner, the anxiety skyrocketed & prompted me to google, “can food cause anxiety?” I was blown away by what I found after digging through the internet: that high glycemic foods can cause an insulin rush that can cause feelings of anxiety! The next morning, I researched low glycemic index foods, went to the store, bought them all and the positive results were literally instantly noticeable. Once I started eating LG foods my anxiety decreased about 80% right away! And some added bonuses that followed: my near constant heartburn and nighttime GERD disappeared, (allowing me to sleep lying down again!) AND I’ve lost 18 pounds. But more than anything, the most important part of discovering the link of food to my mental health has been the ability to regain a more calm and less stressful existence. I wish more people (like you are doing) talked about the relationship, because while medications can of course help many people, there is sometimes a LOT you can do to help yourself without meds. I still have that nagging 15%-20% anxiety that lurks nearby, but I can deep breath it away for the most part now. It’s easy to stay away from sugar and highly refined carbs when you know the consequences if you don’t.

      @@KindnessInChaos I’m glad to offer any help I can. It’s been over a year since I cut out sugar and highly refined carbs, and my anxiety is still very much reduced. And I’ve now lost over 50 pounds. I eat fresh veg and fruits and even make a couple of delish breads from almond flour (great recipes are out there). I eat a lot of nuts, cheese, beans and other low glycemic foods. I had all my labs done recently and everything looks great. It really hasn’t been difficult (for me). I wish you all the luck if you try this way of eating.

    I've been working with this "30 plant foods" number and including some fermented foods each day. When I sustain this I feel really good. Whenever I feel like carbs will mend everything I remind myself "food can help me feel better, but not in the way I think" and try to stay on track. I write a list on my white board to help me track my "at least 30 plants" each week.
    TBH the effect is marvellous and I think it's two things, one is better gut health and overall nutrition, the other is something you mention in another video, I'm working with something in my "locus of control" to feel better, it helps me let go of the bits I can't control and manage stress. Thanks Emma.

    • @craigfoulkes
      @craigfoulkes ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought it was 30 plant food a day. If I remember the video I watched correctly. But it is no as daunting as it first seems. This includes very small amounts of food. So adding a handful of mixed seeds to breakfast counts as 5 or 6. Add mixed herbs to your lunch and that 5 more. Add mixed berries to dessert and that's 5 more.

    Thanks so much Emma! I suspect that a heavy dose of antibiotics I was given as a child (to treat limes disease) may have been the catalyst for digestive issues, mental health issues, and eating disorders that I’m still struggling with now. I find that life improves a lot if I exercise and get enough sleep (but sometimes it’s hard to do this regularly). It also is better if I eat small meals with plenty of time in between to digest, don’t get too starving, and if I don’t eat when I’m already feeling very stressed. Certain foods also seem to help: fresh ginger, yogurt, spices, soaked chia seeds, sweet potatoes, and tofu. I also stumbled on a probiotic that seemed to make a big difference (garden of Eden’s Dr formulated shelf stable for women). The only problem is that it’s quite expensive, so if I run out I often can’t replace it for long stretches. It’s amazing how much the state of my digestion does affect my state of mind and determine whether or not I can cope (or even be nice).

    In my college days between school and family stress I was so sick and couldn’t keep any food in me. I’d eat and be sick for next couple of hours. I saw a gastroenterologist who prescribed me antidepressants and I thought that was CRAZY (Looking back, I know where she was going with that because I was in denial of my anxiety and depression)!!! My body didn’t react well to the medicine, so I stopped them. Finished school and disowned the family causing the drama in my life and haven’t had issues since. The brain and stomach are really connected!!!!

    I’ve been fascinated with this topic for several years and especially with the possibility of using FMT to help people with depression. I’m so happy this area of research is growing and I hope we’ll finally find out which bacteria/fungi are responsible for such issues and which could be helpful. I believe this knowledge is crucial in choosing the right donor to make sure the patient doesn’t receive some bacteria that would in turn cause some other health issues.

    Really informative, and I’m going to try some of these things. I already take a probiotic tablet twice a day, and eat yogurt, which has helped my IBS. On a side note, I’m a retired nurse, and the hospital I worked for used fecal transplants for patients with intractable Clostridium Difficile infections due to either prolonged or multiple antibiotic treatment that killed off all their good gut bacteria. It didn’t work for everyone, but most saw enough of an improvement that their symptoms were managed enough until their own gut bacteria levels returned. Most people cringe at the thought, but those who accepted the treatment were desperate to try anything to relieve the misery.

    • @Alphacentauri819
      @Alphacentauri819 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I used to be a nurse too! While we hadn't done fecal transplants at the facility I worked with, the immunology docs talked about it.
      I did start asking for probiotics for my patients on antibiotics and asked they be spaced apart.
      Knowing what I now know, I'd hope for more individualized probiotics for patients...such as those with histamine intolerance to get the low histamine strains, as to not bombard their system. Many of those type patients have their immune system, inflammatory mediators (and more) so out of whack, that they are very sensitive.
      I wish we could eradicate C diff, it's so terrible.
      Another important aspect, I really tapped into, after quitting nursing (due to my youngest child born 3 months premature 😯) was when he had health issues and my anxiety was through the roof.
      Learning ways to calm our nervous systems, emotionally regulate, has been key in overall health. His bowels have greatly improved with emotional regulation skills, we even do a nightly sleep meditation. So, so important.
      I wish you wellness, peace and health 💛💫

    Thanks for the video Dr. Emma!
    I wanted to mention that for people with Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). Probiotics and prebiotics aren't necessarily a good idea.
    This condition is relatively unknown but it's pretty common and you should try to get a diagnosis for it if you suspect you have it.
    Do you quickly bloat after every meal?
    Do you have problems with weight gain/loss that can't be easily explained?
    Do you get gut cramps?
    Do you have frequent diarrhea/constipation?

    I’ve been taking a high quality probiotic supplement for several years and I definitely notice the mood improvement- I’d credit it with helping me be 15% less irritable, more resilient, easier going. That paired with a clean, healthy, low carb/low sugar and 30-45 outdoor exercise is as effective for me as a prescription low dose anti depressant.

    I know I messed up with my micro biome last year. Started getting abdominal pain here and there doing a very stressful time in my life. I received therapy, exercise and eating healthy and I was back on the right path. In 2023 again I was extremely stressed lost my assistant at work, my grandfather had to have open heart surgery, I had to break a lease early with my landlord bc he was a fraud, and I had to take care of my grandfather for 2 weeks while on leave pay. I couldn’t eat for days bc of the extreme pain. Finally my gastro diagnosed me with stress induced gastritis. Keep in mind I was eating out a lot, stressed, anxiety was bad and no exercising ! I went on an all liquid diet with vitamins, prebiotic and probiotics with omegas and electrolytes and my pain slowly went from chronic to acute pain. I’ve been on a Mediterranean diet for 1 month while on a short term PPI and I know when I ease off the pills I will be staying on my diet and exercising. Your body is signaling something is wrong when you’re overly stressed out and can’t eat.

    I have been dealing with some financial/family and self esteem issues for quite a while now. Every time I had a negative thought/emotion, I could totally feel it in my gut as well, it was like a gut illness waiting to happen but I didn't think too much of it back then. Sure enough, since August last year, all these stressors manifested as GERD/gut inflammation (I knew it had to be stress because I'm not that old, keep active and eat decently well) and I had to be put on H2 blockers as well as being told to "reduce stress" and a whole bunch of other things. I now also start to do some meditation and deep breathing to calm myself whenever I feel ANY kind of negativity (which is the big culprit of reflux) coming up.
    I knew about the gut-brain connection before, but now I get to feel and experience just how important it really is.

One thing to note is that people with histamine intolerance and mast cell activation disorders need to be careful with fermented food and certain strains of probiotics. I can only take acidophilus, for instance, as I react to multi-strains and to very high count. Hey, I was diagnosed with IBD recently and am trying to learn more about it as I also had major depression on past. In my case, I am convinced the desease is somehow connected to my emotions/brain. As she mentions on this video gut inflammation may cause brain inflammation... so maybe therapy, having a hobby, sports, and not only diet may help the gut. I am still figuring out what works for me and hope to find my way over time. I hope you get well too :)

      @@jessicaferreira324 here's what I wish I'd known 14 years ago when I started with severe IBD - food matters! I was told by docs that it was nothing to do with food...but in the last 4 years I've cut out sugar, sweetners, all processed food, alcohol, meat, fish & most dairy (still eat a little cheese). It's not easy but defo worth it - everything I eat is fresh & home made.. even bread. I eat loads of wholegrain pasta, rice, veg, fruit, eggs, nuts etc. Batch cooking & freezing is key. Research food for good gut microbiome & anti inflammatory diet.
      For the first 10 years (before I changed my diet) I had to take really high doses of steroids & immuno suppressants & now I don't take any.
      I've tried loads of different health supplements..the only one that helps me is "L Glutamine" which helps to repair the gut lining.
      There's also a free app which I discovered recently called Yuka - it scans barcodes & tells you what additives are in food.
      If you decide to change your diet I'd suggest gradual change to allow your body/gut to adjust.
      Good luck with your journey, I hope this information is useful x

My blood sugar level was at a 65, on the lower end, but everything else checked out fine. They said I might’ve had a panic attack or anxiety influenced it. But then I proceeded to throw up 10+ times throughout the entire day yesterday, my stool has been coming out different, and I have been feeling anxious, dread and depression since yesterday. I don’t understand why my mood and mental health has deteriorated so quickly and how my stomach isn’t feeling well.

It also has probiotic/prebiotic blend of 50mg of inulin, l rhamnosus, l acidophilus. And 50mg of a digestive enzyme blend.
    I consume this for lunch everyday along with oatmeal and fruit for breakfast and a well portioned prganic protein/veggie/grain dinner.
