  • In today's video, I look at the brand new guitar multi fx from Boss called the ME-90.
    Building on the hugely successful ME-80, Boss has completely changed the processing engine to the same engine as their top-of-the-range guitar multi-effects processors called A.I.R.D. This is the same engine as units such as the GT-1000 and GX-100.
    Here is what Boss says about the ME-90 Guitar Multi Effects.
    EFFORTLESS CREATIVITY AT YOUR FEET
    The BOSS ME series has been a favorite of performing guitarists for over three decades, combining multi-effects power with intuitive hands-on control for crafting tones in seconds. The ME-90 is the most advanced ME model to date, offering exceptional audio quality with 24-bit AD/DA and 32-bit floating point processing, flagship-grade AIRD amp models, IR loading, an effects loop, and more. Compact, battery-powered, and filled with premium BOSS tones, this versatile all-in-one processor makes it easy to build customized sound setups for every playing situation.
    ME-90 features the latest BOSS audio engine : AIRD, offering responsible amp modelling and a plethora of new inspiring effect algorithms, including a brand new Tune Down effect.
    There are 3 custom IR slots for you to load your own mic and cab IR in the unit via its dedicated IR loader.
    The new Send/Return enables the use of external amps and effects with ME-90. This can be Pre or Post preamp section.
    You can also control the FX loop by foot in Manual mode.
    The output is also optimised for the gear connected to it :
    • Guitar Amp
    • Line (this adds Mic/Speaker emula- tion).
    The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    It's worth knowing that Boss's AIRD Cabs are way more realistic than an IR is capable of. Unlike an IR, they simulate the push-pull response between the amp and the cab and react dynamically. An IR is a static snapshot of the EQ curve captured from a specific mic placement on a speaker when a flat power amplifier is sending through a signal at fixed volume. So it's not capable or dynamically reacting or distorting. AIRD however is an alternative that does capture those qualities.

    I actually just had an encounter with the ME-80 a couple weeks ago. Had never really thought about it until I had to make some patches for a student band. Was surprised at how much I liked the sounds. Cool to see there's an updated version with the new amp models. Even tho I think the COSM amps are a bit underrated and not all that bad, the AIRD models are undeniably more hip sounding.

      I loved my ME-80. The tactile nature of the setup makes it easy to learn what settings do what (rather than menu diving for that 1 other setting in a patch to break it down) and easy to teach to others, plus re-creating others patches is a matter of them telling you what knob=what setting. Simple!

      Awesome mate. Now you just have to learn how to play. There is more to playing that loud, fast power chords and the same tired runs. I thought I was good too. Ran into 3 pro's the other day and we jammed a bit. Wow- I know nothing. They changed scales, and modes in between chord changes- knew all the triads all over the neck and tonal centers. My playing sounded quite vanilla by comparison> Maybe you are better than me- probably but just saying. Many people play songs- not guitar. I can play over 100 songs fairly well but I would not say I play guitar. I am def. not a musician. There is an epic difference. Which are you?
      Disregard- just saw your playing. You are awesome! Wish I could play like that.

  • @IsaacLausell
    @IsaacLausell ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I still have an old ME70 which I have not used in a while. I like that this newer version sounds warmer, less bassy and less fizzy. You could also get some crazy sounds from the old unit however it did not have IR capabilities nor an effects loop like this one does.
    As with the katana I still find disappointing the lack of stereo left and right delays. With the katana at least you can mimic it to an extent by combining a ping pong and a normal delay but only through the usb port. It is crazy that it even the new head does not have a stereo out.
    All that being said I feel that IR slots and stereo delays by now should be a standard feature as well as with the eq stuff. At minimum you need a parametric eq. I do get that this aimed at the folks that want to be scrolling down menus but if they are a putting an “all in one” product why stop when they are almost already there?

    Clean and lead sounds have been done to perfection since the early 90s by multieffects units. There's no challenge there. Demonstrating the crunch and high gain sounds is where the value is. Also I've seen pro players plug this into power amplifiers on stage, so testing this would have been great...

    I see it as a very handy studio unit, but had an ME80 and hoped the 90 would sound a little better, but sold mine as it just didn't quite get the sound I wanted live which I was hoping it would. BOSS still don't seem to nail the onboard OD/ Distortions. No matter how much I tweaked the settings, I have a BOSS BD-2 Waza which sounds so much bigger in a live situation than the ME90 version, also have an OCD Germanium pedal which sounds so much better than any dirt setting on the 90, and I didn't really want to buy a big Multi FX unit then add seperate pedals. Thanks for your excellent videos.

  • @scke3717
    @scke3717 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No doubt lots of folks will be excited to get the upgraded floor unit. For me the AIRD drives (same as on the GX100) were not nearly as good as my drive pedals; the modulations more limited than Line6. So it didnt make sense just to use it for the form-factor. But if you like the individual fx from AIRD or If you currently use several Boss pedals, its a no brainer replacement which is probably easiest multifx to set up.

Not perfect, but I've not had a digital effects that is compared to a real tube amp, but that said. I am not allowed to use an amp most places I play. So, I'm looking at this and the Tone X.. The ToneX sounds really really good and small foot print which I love.. I can download as many sounds and tones as I need on their website as well.. No need to sample any amps really.. Then how do you recall those "scenes" by a 2 digit number? or you need to scroll up and down the number sequence? This makes Boss Me90 unit only good for impromptu fiddling but not for stage performance.

    hi Paul, brilliant video, i play in various bands and i use the boss me 80, but now i feel its time to get the 90, I've owned the line 6 and headrush multi fx and i keep going back to the me 80, i recently purchased the apero mini, cant seem to get the right sound and wished id kept the ua fx dream 65 and Woodrow 55, I've also had the new tc electronic amp works pedals, but again i keep going back to the 80, for a working musician like me i need to quickly dial in the tones i need for each session. tone wise i have also been going back to individual pedals but that's sometimes to much faff, with batteries and power supply's and high end patch cables, the me 90 is a no brainer. all the best from Cornwall.

    I still have the ME-70 and a Headrush Gigboard. Although all of these multi-effects units sound glorious with headphones or through a DAW, I can never get them to sound convincing going through the front of an amp.
    If this ME-90 can pull that off, I might just take the plunge.

      Got an ancient ME-80 and it sounds signifigantly better going into the return of my amp loop and totaly bypass the amp preamp.

    Hi Paul, Clifton here. It's been a while since i checked in with you. Have always enjoyed your style and your video content. This video is an easy home run. That Suhr guitar is a lovely stunner, well done. It is almost as tasteful as your playing, thank you, as always.
    So, here's my thought. Over the years I have accumulated about 80 quality pedals. As my next birthday is #77, and humping gear and gigging is no longer of any interest to me, I think divesting myself of 50- 60 or so and keeping only the very best ones (10-15-20) And then getting a ME-90 would be a good way to scale down and still have some choices. What say you?? would that be a good way to go?

    It surprises me that a brand new unit like this doesn't have a better display. Will it be able to overcome this in the marketplace? It looks like really old tech, even if it isn't. They buried this unit away and finally decided to release it years later?

      I was actually pondering on that one myself. I want to downsize my pedalboard, which mainly has boss pedals and some ehx ones. I was looking into the me90, but the mixed feedback about the preamp section throws me off a bit. I was also eyeballing the ir 200 as silent stage solution for my current pedalboard. And then started wondering if the preamp section is not to my taste, then maybe I could pair it with the ir 200. Of course, with the money of the two combined, I could get something totally different, I understand. But I like how tactile the me90 is. When they hit stores here, I'll first try out the preamp section of the me90. 😊

    As always, you've dialed in awesome tones and your playing is phenomenal. Thank you for putting together another great video! I had one question: does a recorded phrase loop carry over in memory mode if i change from preset 1 to 2 or 3, if all are configured to have a phrase looper?

    • @TheStudioRats
      @TheStudioRats  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a good question, I don’t know and the me90 is packed away at the moment due to building works in the house. I’ll dig it out when I can and check.

    • @AfrazAhmad01
      @AfrazAhmad01 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheStudioRats the looper carries over in both the gx100 and the GT1, but it didnt in my me70. Just curious if they've fixed this in the me90 because it is a dealbreaker for anyone who wants to use the onboard looper with presets. Also, the me70 only had a mono looper, while in the GT1 its stereo

    I like the way you set your tones but I was wondering can you assign two separate footswitches one to go from clean to crunchy rhythm tone and the other footswitch to add a boost or stack another overdrive? without the need to attach an external pedal. Because I set my pedalboard exactly the same as you but I want this to be an all in one throw in the gig bag situation.. I dont want to add external pedals I have my analog rig for that.

    • @CedricSatterfield
      @CedricSatterfield ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a wireless receiver- for Bluetooth, at least. Did you mean like the Boss WL-type stuff? Internal-only batteries are a pain, I think. You have to dump the unit, send it somewhere, or hack it to change outthe internal battery. SHURE wireless units at least use a replaceable rechargeable battery that you can buy anywhere for like 25-30 bucks and then your are rolling again. I could see building a removable battery pack of rechargeable AA's, though. I've seen other people do similar.

Did you connect to a computer and used a DAW? did you mic up an amp or a cab in your room? something else? I'm asking to figure out what actually gave us the sound we heard here. I've always liked the ME concept and I seriously favour real knobs over menu's & the ME90 sounds great. But if they were upgrading it, why oh why did Boss not add patch naming??!!?? 'Patch numbers only' went out with the ark - and for a gigging player especially its utterly pointless having 36 factory & 36 user memory preset locations if you can't see what they are!
    Even my old tech Vox Tonelab SE and LE from 2004 and 2007 respectively have patch-naming. It means that once again the ME is useless for me for live gigging as its essential I see the patch name when I'm moving around patches at a gig. Which is an absolute criminal shame as with the AIRD & FX loop it would have been perfect for my gigging needs and I'd have been all over it like a rash as I don't want a complex menu driven unit like the Boss GX100. As it stands, I'll have to stick with my old Tonelabs. Boss, you need your asses kicking!!
