    Maarten You are the Menu Master! The only person in the world that makes menus interesting and fun to watch even for cameras I don’t like. Of course I like this camera and mirrorless in general but I would watch your reviews also for washing machines. I just love the enthusiastic and humble tone of a friend showing me his last new toy

    Another great and comprehensive review from Mr. Heillbron, was waiting for this camera since Fuji rumors mentioned it few months back, as an upgrade from my 3 years old X-M1 but the lack of tilting screen just killed it for me! I have to agree with the below comments, Maarten. You present a 100% thorough review of each camera, it's menu system, set-up, advantages and disadvantages. Totally professional, generally neutral and with comments on your own preferences which is absolutely fine. The only thing I'd note is that everything goes so fast (yes, I realize you're 30 minute videos would otherwise be two hours), that I have to go back over certain parts of your clips again and again to ensure I caught everything. I don't know how you keep everything lined up so methodically! I know where I need to turn to learn more about my X-E3 than I've figured out myself. Thanks!

    Another great video!! A quick way to enable back button focus is to set the focus mode selector on the front of the camera to M and then you can use the AF-L button for back button focus, its a lot less hassle than going into the menus. One point though, in 4k video the X-E3 uses the full width of the sensor and uses pixel binning exactly the same as the X-T20 does, you do not have a reduced angle of view like you do on the X-T2 that crops 4k video. This is with firmware version 1.0, maybe you were using a pre-production version of firmware, but as shipped there is no crop.

    Great review! Love the depth of the information, as well as the detail with which you present it. Couldn't help but think there's no way they _overlooked_ the off centre tripod position - it was a deliberate choice since they know the fanbase is bothered by this. So it's probably for another design consideration of the inner workings that are not visible to us non-fuji-techs :-) I too was thinking: "Well no wonder it doesn't focus on a doll" with the eye focus reliability remark, but you probably know what you're doing with that :-) Thanks again. Great review.
    PS: Your name sounds so Dutch it's weird!

      Thank you - that's very kind of you to say. Deliberate, yes but misguided. Those dolls (I use them all the time) typically focus better than real faces - I was quite surprised when it failed. Not so weird, as I was born in Holland.

    Excellent review as always. All my Canon gear has now been sold. I’m stocking up on my film cameras and keeping my eyes out for updates on Fuji mirrorless cameras. While my next big camera purchase is large format (Intrepid), I’m not giving up on the idea of another digital SLR/mirrorless system in the future. I also have my X100F which is just a joy to hold and shoot too.

      Very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm still hanging on to one Canon body (50D) and lens (L 24-105). I don't use them a lot, but can't bear to part with them. While I do spend some time lusting after full frame cameras (The D850 is my next review) I'm perfectly satisfied with APS-C. I agree - Fuji builds a lot of joy into their cameras.

    Another refined and insightful video Maarten . The tripod plate covering the battery slot and the absence of manual description for non activated functions are my gripe too (with other Fuji bodies in my case). Mostly pleased with what Fuji offers for so little money though.With Canadians gaining on the trade discussions and Fuji being on our side it’s a win win situation..eh?

    This is perhaps your best video yet, and it caused me to buy the camera packaged with the 23mm lens. I had to re-watch in order to set the camera up. Because I already own the X-Pro2 and two X-T2s, I am finding this to be a bit on the small side to operate. I suspect that I will continue to use the X-Pro2 for the street, but this one begs to be the travel body; drop the body alone into one pocket of a sport coat, and the lens into the other.

    Fabulous video. Thanks for all the work to make it so comprehensive with thoughtful opinions and without the sensationalism. Much appreciated! A question regarding the touch screen AF when using the viewfinder: does it work like a mouse (when your finger is on the left side, the AF is on the left), or like a “nudger” - move right to move the AF to the right from wherever it is?

    Yet another very comprehensive review. Thanks Maarten! I'm actually planning to get the X-E3 (my first Fuji) as an alternative to my Nikon DSLR system when I want to carry a smaller, more portable and discreet camera.
    By the way, of the many reviews I've watched on Fuji cameras, none of the reviews mention if the frame rates, both mechanical and electronic, will AE and AF on all those frame rates, whereas most will mention it for Nikon frame rates. Am I missing something?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you - I appreciate the kind words. I'm assuming you mean the burst rate - yes, good question. I'm always testing those in manual exposure mode to determine what the potential maximum is, adding AF and AE will slow the speed, the extent of the speed reduction being somewhat scene and action dependent. Older slower processing technology locked those settings for a higher frame rate, Fuji does not lockup those settings when shooting at the highest rate on their latest models. There is no setting where you explicitly give up AE and AF to increase speed, as there used to be.

    Thanks a lot Maarten, I'll be replaying your video once I received the camera. I've bought it last week, but with a different lens: the 18 - 55 mm...I also ordered an adaptor to mount my Contax/Yashika Carl Zeiss lenses, I'm interested to find out how the camera will render images using manual lenses from another brand. I'll report again soon. Thanks again for your video, it clarifies a lot of things already!

    Excellent review. Now subscribed. I just bought the X-E3 today at the Photography show with the 18-55 kit lens and the 35mm F2 primarily for street photography. I also shoot with a Canon 5D Mark IV, but on the streets people tend to hide/cover their face or just pose, which defeats the object. I did have the X-T20, but at the time couldn't get on with the menu system - down to me not investing enough time to familiarise myself with it. The lack of tilt screen doesn't bother me, you can easily shoot from the hip and with practice become quite proficient. I love the discreetness of the X-E3 and if you buy a pancake lans the camera's quiet pocketable. For the money, it's a cracking bit of kit...but of course in photography, the most important thing is that which lies a few inches behind the viewfinder :-)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words and your detailed notes. If you want discretion, you will need a little more technique than using a smaller camera and keeping your eye from the viewfinder. I like Garry Winogrand's fumbling with the camera approach - but if you stand in one spot long enough with your eye on the viewfinder, you will blend into the background fairly quickly. You always feel more conspicuous than you are.

    Hello Maarten! Thanks for the very detail review of X-E3. I love it and still compare X-E3 with X-T20, which one I should buy. But I love the X-E3 design so much!! Too bad it doesn't come with tilting LCD display, which I need for flat lay or food photography. Keep up the good work, Sir!!

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      Maarten, as a film rangefinder shooter, what do you think about the EVF on this camera? I don't like to shoot using the live view on the back of the screen. I much prefer having my eye to a viewfinder. I've heard mixed reports about the EVF being slow, laggy and not very reliable.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're looking for an optical equivalent - it's not. But it's a reasonable and usable EVF - somewhere in the mid-range of EVF performance. Those adjectives (except "reliable" - I don't get that) could be applied here as to many others - but likely by a reviewer who has experienced better.
