I watched this video for the first time….6? Years ago. It inspired me to push my art further. Today i’m a full time freelancer. I dont make a lot but it was enough money to help me escape from my abusive family and set out to live my own life. I’m happy and moderately successful, and i owe it in part to stumbling across this video. Thank you, jeff miracola. ❤️
School at first. At least for drawing. Then I taught myself how to paint by looking at other artist's books and paintings. Just like anything else, the more you do it, the better you get. So the only true way to learn to paint is to paint. The important thing is to start working, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes and try to make it better on the next painting. Then do that all over again for the rest of your life :-)
jeffmiracola Me too, but I concentrated on the masters, mostly. Been painting 60+, years with many weekend tutorials by a myriad of teachers I admire. After we were married I put my husband through college and was supposed o go for an art degree that never seemed to materialize. Now that I am retired I can follow my heart full time until I can no longer hold a brush. I bought an airbrush for cake work but have trepidations about using it for art, you give me encouragement to mix my techniques. Thanks!
I would love to be able to do this. I'm obsessed with Heavy metal/thrash album covers, loads of really cool fantasy art. Is there some online things I can learn/work with that can help me do what you're doing? Left to my own devices I'm not very good with motivation. I was wondering if there was a course that gets marked or checked by a teacher? Thanks for this great video! Amazing painting! :)
all artist in the world, too many to name them, but you are in those great artist, its fantastic that you share the knoledge and your experience, to all of us!, thanks
....thank you not only for taking the time to respond, but for your many words of encouragement! I will get to it & hopefully one day be half the artist you are! Take care.
Seeing work start to finish is so much more entertaining than just a completed artwork and this vid is an excellent demonstration of this! Great stuff Jeff! Thankyou for sharing!
Hi Jeff, I think I need to to watch one of your movies each morning to provide me with inspiration for the day. This video is amazing! Its such fun and interesting to watch you work, pure painting pleasure. That back ground worked out so well, the colour choices were great. Thanks for sharing your talent with us and I cant wait to check out more of your stuff. Joe
dean, Thanks so much for those really kind words. I tell everyone all the time that it's not that I'm more talented than another person, it's that I put in more time on my art. I have never stopped drawing and painting since I was in school a million years ago. I understand there is some level of talent in what any artist does, but I truly believe anyone can be great at this stuff if they just dedicate themselves and put in the hours. I am still learning and trying to get better every day.
A great point you bring up. Getting the "feel" of painting can take time to learn. Although there are many ways to approach a painting, paint is paint. It is fluid and moldable. It's not drawing. It has it's own challenges thanks to the varying properties of the paints. Getting the feel for it can be frustrating when starting out. Patience is key. The results are not always immediate and you have to build up enough experience using paint to envision how your work will look in the end.
Every time I watch this guy work I'm reminded of why I wanted to become a commercial fantasy artist. His work reminds me of the book that started it all for me when I was 13. A book called "Dream Makers" from Paper tiger I think its out of print now. Before that I thought painting was all about oil paints, barns, landscapes and old ships. Then I got my hands on Dream Makers, and saw what I wanted to do with my life. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Jeff, Love your traditional skills.
so lame? Duuuude!!! Please.... you rock! I have a new found respect for illustrators after having sat through what I just saw and knowing the pain staking time it would have taken you to nurture every detail of that piece! Awesome! If I only had the patience, the SKILL and... oh yeah!... the imagination!
THIS HAS TO BE THE MOST ENTERTAINING VIDEO ON TH-cam,THE FILMAGE IS EXCELENT,JEFF IS VERY GOOD EXPLAINING,PLEASE DO SOME MORE!!30 MINUTES ONES!AWESOME ILUSTRATION
+Metal Grootvader Thanks so much. But don't be intimidated because that can only lead to you freezing up and not getting back to it. Move at your own pace. Have a goal of course, but realize it will take some time to get there and embrace that. I've been doing this for over 20 years and am only starting to paint the way I had hoped to 20 years ago. Seriously.
Hello Jeff and greetings from the UK. I stumbled across your videos about a week ago and must say i love, love, love your work. I am blown away by your skill using different media. I really appreciate some one who has spent countless hours in pursuit of there craft. Thanks for sharing and please keep posting your vids.
Thanks for sharing traditional art techniques. It is getting harder to find traditional art tutorials nowadays online. Just tons of speed painting in Photoshop or some other graphic program. Thumbs Up!
Wonderful!! The way you treat the colours and building the painting... just magnificent like pieceofarwork13 said. Thank you for getting a visit in your studio.
This video is so fun. Don't get me wrong, it has great educational and informative value as well, but I kinda expected that. I genuinely enjoyed the "terrible rambling" that went with the painting process. Respect.
....wow im in awe of how amazingly simple u make it look! Thank you sooooooo much mr. Miracola for sharing this with us. Its always so intimate when u get a chance to see a master artist in his or her studio doing what they love! I have been trying to get not only the technique but the "feel" for painting, & this means alot to me & will be tons of help. Thanks again i am sooooo grateful to u & wish u the best with everything u do!!!!......p.s MORE VIDEOS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
Simply awesome. I so wish I had went to school for art. I got into art school, but was held back because of money issues. I'm a nurse now. Daily I am reminded of how I wish I would have stuck with it. Your amazing.
+TheBohica77 Lack of money was the reason I left art school early, and without a degree. But thankfully I stuck with it and slaved through the early years. Congrats on being a nurse. My oldest daughter is studying to be one :-)
And THIS is why you're the professional...that was fantastic...right about the middle, I thought I liked the original hand drawn pencil version the best but after you airbrushed and then highlighted...etc it looked epic! This was a great video-thank you!
No special brush needed really. The way I've used the airbrush in this video is very minimal and all this can be achieved without using one. If using a regular brush (soft sable), build up your dark areas with multiple washes of color. Example: Lay down a transparent black or dark brown layer, let it dry, then do that again. Keep doing that until your dark areas are built up to your liking. Keep each layer thin so that you can still see your image underneath it.
Soooo glad this is helpful to you. I do love to pass on knowledge. I've been inspired by and helped by many artists. It's always great to pay it forward.
Yep, sure did. Glad you think it's epic. It takes time and dedication to see a painting like this through from start to finish, but the payoff is great. It's always nice to have a vibrant oil painting created by hand hanging on the wall.
@jeffmiracola People like you are important to this world. Here's why: I've been drawing all my life but never pursued a career in the arts because I had no confidence. and just figured I'd get a 9-5 job.I recently got married june 8th and got laid off july 1st. I really had no hope about the workforce and especially not the arts. Because you uploaded this video, watching you work has inspired me to try. Thank you for sharing this video and giving me hope...
love the painting and to tell you the truth... there is no one word to summarize your art work so i'll just have to sum it all up. Wonderfull, amazing, terrific, awe inspiring, awsome, just perfect, and i ran out of words to say. + thanks for the "Don't give up." advice. it really helps. :)
Hey Jeff, brilliant video! I've been drawing in pencil and ink since I was a kid but never successfully transitioned from drawing to painting. Your video makes the steps clearer and makes the possibility of being a painter, a reality. Thank you.
Jason, You're welcome. Thanks for enjoying the video. As for the paints, I use all lines and two different brands right now. I use Liquitex and Golden paints. There are certain colors from Golden that I like and certain colors from Liquitex that I like. I use soft body acrylics a lot because they have intense color and coverage. Oh, I also use those little bottles of Badger airbrush paint occasionally. And not always to airbrush them. Sometimes I use them right out of the bottle with a brush.
You are an amazing artist! I respect the fact that you are making that fabulous art from scratch and not using the so called photoshop. As a matter of fact, your technique is quite similar to the old masters of oil painting! Huge thanks for sharing your creativeness!
So glad this was helpful to you Brian. In my next video, that I'm working on now, I do an even better job of explaining the steps and materials. It's tough because when you do something like this as long as I have, it becomes second nature and I don't always think about explaining everything or keeping it simple for the viewers. So my wife keeps me in line. She's the best.
I bought your videos last night and watched about an 1 1/2 hours so far. I had to stop and tell you how utterly impressed I am with your help, your talent, patience and professionalism. I just got commissioned to do a cover for a fantasy book. I started and realized I have an awful lot to learn about this genre! And I'm learning! Thanks so much. Wish I could have a one on one but maybe in the future :)
+Lucille Femine First, thank you so much for buying the videos. Second, I'm THRILLED you are finding them useful. Third, congratulations on scoring a fantasy book cover :-) Yes, there is a lot to learn, but don't let that shut you down. Just strive to do your best and you'll get better with every new painting you do. I'm doing my first in-person painting workshop in April in southern Wiscosnin. if that goes well, I may travel to other cities to do workshops :-)
Awesome. Thanks for doing these videos. I like how you go really in depth on your process. Showing how everything starts even from the transfer of the drawing. Its really helpful.
This was great! I can't believe TH-cam took so long to recommend your videos. Thank you for sharing so much useful advice, especially the bit about the airbrush. I own an airbrush that was handed down to me, but I've never really known how or where to use it in my art, but watching the way you use it sparked a whole bunch of ways to incorporate it into my art. Thanks so much!
So glad this video has been helpful for you. There are a number of ays to achieve shading. You could add some kind of medium to your acrylics so they don't dry so fast, thus allowing you to blend the colors more easily. Or you could do thin washes of color, one over the other, slowly building up your color and giving the impression of shading. This is generally the method I choose.
Cold press illustration board is smooth and has very little texture or "tooth". It allows for better details. Canvas has a deep texture so it's tough to get very fine detail unless you've really built the paint up and eliminated some of the canvas texture. You use gesso on illustration board so your paint doesn't soak into the board. Gesso is versatile and can give you a gritty, textured surface or super smooth surface if you sand it down. Gesso is a must for illustration board.
jeff, thanks for all your videos, inspired me a lot!! I'm really stuck in the performance of my work and see how you do your works I returned disappointed. Thank you so much for giving you the time and share your techniques. ;)
We all get stuck in a rut once in a while. Even me. When this happens to me I go look at the work of other artists and it gets me excited to paint again. Or I go for a run and lift weights to clear my head. It helps to get away from the studio occasionally to recharge. Also, if you have the opportunity to hang out and talk with others artists, that helps as well.
At that time to defuse my head, I found you. Maybe it costs me a little express but really, do not give an idea what I mean your video for me. Always I'm going to thank. In fact is that many must pass them. I wish you well and that you'll fill with good fortune and success. Sorry for my English is not my mother tongue. If one day you come to Argentina, I invite you to eat a delicious "Asado" (meat cooked on the coals) and have a few beers or going to USA the same! ,) Thanks Jeff
I watched this and immediately ordered your dvd set. I paint in landscape and do not typically paint gouols and wraiths, lol. But have always been a Frazetta fan and your work has that vibe. Nice!
Chris, I saw you ordered the dvd. Thank you so much for that. And really, even if you don't paint ghouls or monsters, you'll get a lot out of this dvd. The processes I show can apply to so many subjects.
Wow, this is one of the best painting tutorials I have ever seen (and I've watched hundreds of painting videos). You are so fantastic for taking the time to make this video. Thank you!
I've always wondered how fantasy artists develop their paintings to look soft but have so much detail. I learned a lot from this video. Thank you for posting it! I might try out using my airbrush for something like this.
Hey jeff...I can say that you are ridiculously insane with your art...I'm definitely a huge fan of yours...can't wait till you make another awesome video...oh you should also make a video of all your art supplies you use...=)

Thanks. Yes, it is those simple little techniques that can make all the difference.

I love this video! When I see him I want to paint! Thank you Jeff
You're very welcome. Now go PAINT! :-)
Watched this three times now! Really digging your instructional videos!
As a "dormant" (would-be) artist, I love your videos. Beautiful work and I love getting a glimpse at the process of creation.

So glad this was helpful to you Brian. In my next video, that I'm working on now, I do an even better job of explaining the steps and materials. Amazing detailed work. Thank you for sharing your technique. Please do more videos. Love it!
After watching some of videos and especially this one I decide to subscribe to your channel. Thank you for the insight and inspiration.
Awesome. Thanks for doing these videos. I like how you go really in depth on your process. Showing how everything starts even from the transfer of the drawing. Its really helpful.
Fantastic instructional! Easy enough for beginners like me to follow along. Thanks so much!

Yes, almost always. Once in a while I don't because of time constraints or if I just don't feel like it.
Amazing! Great control over your techniques.
Emma Jade Warren Thank you so much, Emma. Much appreciated. Happy Holidays to you and yours!
I like the paniting and how you did the detalied work it was interesting how you made it come to live.

Do you ever do roses or flowers of any sort? How do you start the areas that have that flame like shape?
Hey jeff...I can say that you are ridiculously insane with your art...I'm definitely a huge fan of yours...can't wait till you make another awesome video...oh you should also make a video of all your art supplies you use...=)
No. For this project I used paint straight from the tube plus water. That's it. Thanks for the question.
I'm being inspired by you! Thanks, Thanks, Thanks a lot!
