I have a BA degree with (HONS). My style of painting is very much like yours. I was told that you can't get no where near enough detail without using oil. I watched this entire thing with my mouth open. (I'm 45 now) but I remember being told also that art won't get you a real job. I work in an office, and I'm miserable. What I wouldn't give to have such a great place to create art like yours. But I will pick up the paintbrushes once again after many years of typing on a keyboard and hating my life. I want to paint the starry night in oil. Which me luck :)
I am not an artist but I love painting with acrylics. I cannot do details but I can paint the dickens out of some abstracts and pours. So as long as you enjoy it and love the outcomes, it's okay that we are not all Picosa or Van Gogh.
As a newbie. I REALLY needed to hear the part about just.. trusting the process. Knowing that it's going to look bad at first. That the first few layers aren't going to look great. I keep having to stop myself from being discouraged and stopping bc I don't like how it looks at the beginning stages.
Yeah, there's a discipline to the process. The initial layers will never look like much, but once you cross the threshold where the forms start to take shape it gives you the motivation to press on. Then, after completing a few paintings, you won't even need the reinforcement through those early stages. You'll know from experience that the initial layers are just foundational and you won't expect them to look like something other than what they are.
My daughter is a wildlife veterinarian. She will be celebrating her bday soon. I wish you are from somewhere near because I want to give her a painting of the 5 endangered animals they breed. Alas! I am from South East Asia. Love your paintings! P.S. For the person mitigating my personal knowledge vs. His subjective experience: I bought a cookbook and the courier cost was $200 while a bag's shipping cost was almost €400. That was DHL and fedex. We do have a post office here and we had lost packages before. Unless items are listed in large wholesale e-commerce marketplace which has really competitive shipping fee in neighboring Asian countries, courier cost is pricey. Some people need to weight in reasonable options such as shipping time, prone to damage in transit and the COST! We have equally talented artists here and deliveries are free. (I have a painting of a humpback whale diving in the ocean and waves are so realistic. It is my favorite and the artist is local). That is my excuse! I can't wink enough here. Before underming people first - widen one's limited perspective, make sure to properly "be in someone's shoes. Apologies, I am not a fan of horror art.
We live in a global world; people ship everyday million of items (painting included). I shipped my paintings regularly from NY, then from Okinawa and now from Italy; it was never a problem (distance is not an excuse any more ;)
I was an airbrush artist n can paint ! But after seeing your video? I feel better because I was using paint brush? But it looked flat! So I started airbrushing my work on top of acrylics n it looked professionally painted n more realism. So your right! Airbrush defines what the paint brush can't . Nice video 😊

There are so many incredibly skilled artists in South East Asia as well, many of them are TH-camrs too. So I'm sure you can find one in your local community you can work with on creating the perfect painting(s) for your daughter.
Wow so helpful! and encouraging knowing the first layers are rubbish even for you. The spray paint really ramps up the values! The gas mask is necessary for all the spraying. You have already given enough. Do not give your health. very helpful and practical!
This is one of the most informative & useful painting videos I have found, so firstly thank you for that. It has really opened my eyes on techniques etc. My background is miniature & model painting with acrylics, at which I’ve become moderately reasonable over the years. I have occasionally tried to dabble in some canvases occasionally and really struggled. I’ve watched many acrylic painting videos, but many aren’t that different to some of the oils in approach. But hearing you talk of priming, colour blocking, washes, glazes, layers, the ugly phase, and even using an airbrush, absolutely feeds into my armoury of learned skills. Your explanation has brought some clarity that I haven’t found elsewhere and am now inspired to go and try some more painting. Thank you for your time

To get the smoothest surface, you should start out with using a portrait single weave canvas. Then add your gesso to it like you regularly do. You could also try painting on hardboard or glass instead of canvas.
The hours you went through to just get this beautiful piece painted has to be overwhelming. Im proud of you. I actually found a better way to use my talent to bank. This is so inspiring though. Great job

I've been painting with acrylic since i was young. My biggest problem was blending so i planned to move to oil but was scared to try it. So i decided to try colored pencils. Which I've been doing for about 10 years. My favorite is realism portraits. I learned to lightly layer the color. What you said about layering light layers of acrylic just clicked something in my head! I love when a single prospective can wack you with inspiration and light you up with excitement! I'm so excited to try again. I was so good at it when i was younger! ❤ thank you

A speed saving tip may be a small roller brush with a 4-5 inch smooth roller to apply your gesso. Have watched almost all (if not all!) your videos. You’ve got some amazing talent and have shared a ton of useful tips. As a beginner, they’re very helpful. Keep up the great work!
Have just now put my name down to be notified about your brush set. Have not ever done acrylic ever before but am wanting to give it a go after watching your videos. I have tried cheap acrylics and found that when I add colors on under painting colors are disturbed underneath and end up muddying and blending instead of being nice, vivid and staying the right colors. Will give it a go soon hopefully. Your painting is breathtakingly stunning.

Your wildlife is wonderful. That's been my love since childhood also. I'll have to study your techniques. Tricks of the trade greatly facilitate the final product, not to mention making the process so much more enjoyable!
What an amazing talent you have. I am 80 years old. I’ve only been painted a few years. I’m self taught I do landscapes and portraits in watercolour and paint landscapes and oils. Yes! This! I make my own even. I put some wet paper towels in a flat container, and a sheet of parchment paper on top. If I put a lid loosely on top, the paints stay open for days

Could you please demonstrate how you actually use a projector. Step by step. How do you keep your phone on for projecting a picture? How do you deal with the shadow of your arm and hand. Are there certain programs that you use for the photo on your phone or iPad? I was able to get one for a deal on Amazon it was $99 but flash sale I got it for $38! Or from memory, of watching Bob Ross as a child. I've been painting a lot recently and I'm getting serious. Just ordered your brushes. Excited to try them out. While I’m no professional, I still understand the importance of a good brush and the price was definitely hard to resist. Love your paintings and thank you for explaining your process 👍🏻👍🏻 This may sound crazy but I actually like the graininess of the canvas pulling through. To me it looks more authentic if that makes sense.

Yes, I used gessoed Masonite for years, but now we have MDF, it's a great surface, with gesso. Also, has slightly less weight to it too, which is good for doing field paintings of landscapes, where you carry everything on your back in pack, for example!
2:46 I agree, the thing about acrylic is that the background is most easily attained if done first. Acrylic takes planning because you are usually painting from the far away to the near.

I collect art and don’t like wildlife paintings. While watching this video I realised why. Most wildlife artists do not take the time to perfect the detail. Proportions, colours and textures. You do a great job at making the art realistic and create an appearance of a living animal. You do excellent work.

I am 76 now and a few years ago I tried my hand at acrylic painting. It did not go well even with simple scenes so I got discouraged and put it down. Incredibly beautiful. I started to paint about 6 months ago, and I started to paint with acrylic about 3 months ago. It's going pretty well for a beginner, but I do not even dream about that I will ever paint as wonderful as you.
it takes time, years to progress, but it happens if you stick with it, even for a few minutes a day. Carry a sketch book with you and draw everything you see, that's art in its earliest form. Don't use projectors, you will never be known as a "true artist" if you do. You must draw well to paint well. Projecting and tracing, then painting in the image, is merely like being a big kid with a Coloring Book!! LOL ;D
@@ronschlorff7089 I do not use projector nor other helping tools. I draw everything wit free hand. I can't even afford the projector. But as you see, many big artists using them and it makes them much easier. :)
Good for you, then you Are an artist, unlike this guy who is an "art technician", in my words. I've been drawing since childhood, now in 70's. I'd never use them, projectors, but have used the grid system, like Leonardo, and Michealangelo did, so they say. Still works well after hundreds of years. LOL. Art does not have to be "easy", but you still have to live with yourself. This guy may use modern tools, but he is only "coloring" an image, like a child with a coloring book, that he did not create by hand, so he is not a "real" artist, nor is anyone else who uses them. It's just simple laziness in my view. We all want to get right into painting soon, but the preliminary work takes time too, and you have to do it to become good at all aspects of art especially drawing. Give 10 people a print out of that same "color book"image, and tell them to finish it , and see what mess you will see! Its just tracing the projector Picture on the canvas. Its sadly just a tracing process. He is incredible with coloring but the jaguar on its own is traced

Its not a gas mask. Its a respirator, Spraying water based thru an airbrush wont kill you. Its the big sprayers where you might need a mask.

You should try the Sta-Wet palette. Your acrylics will stay the same consistency as they did out of the tube. Your paint will stay mobile.

Hello. I'm 41. I have been painting with acrylics for 25 years. As a hobby, no schooling or training. I think the title of this video is right on! Most techniques I've had to pick up on my own. Or from memory, of watching Bob Ross as a child. I've been painting a lot recently and I'm getting serious. With all the access to videos and tutorials, with modern technology, I can educate myself further... If I only would have thought of this sooner! I could have spared a lot of frustration over the years. Thank you for sharing. You are incredible. Everything you offer to teach and share is potentially invaluable to aspiring artists! What type of pencil did you use to draw the image? Any time I try to paint over pencil it smears the pencil creating a "dirty" smear.

Just ordered your brushes. Excited to try them out. While I’m no professional, I still understand the importance of a good brush and the price was definitely hard to resist. Love your paintings and thank you for explaining your process 👍🏻👍🏻 This may sound crazy but I actually like the graininess of the canvas pulling through. To me it looks more authentic if that makes sense.

MDF is my canvas. Few coats of sanded gesso and it’s billiard ball smooth. And once varnished it glows.
Yes, I used gessoed Masonite for years, but now we have MDF, it's a great surface, with gesso. Also, has slightly less weight to it too, which is good for doing field paintings of landscapes, where you carry everything on your back in pack, for example!
2:46 I agree, the thing about acrylic is that the background is most easily attained if done first. Acrylic takes planning because you are usually painting from the far away to the near.
Gorgeous 😊❤. I recently painted the eye of a jaguar with a little bit of surrounding fur. I’m almost determined to proof to the world that you can paint realistic animals with acrylics and your videos help me a lot.

I collect art and don’t like wildlife paintings. While watching this video I realised why. Most wildlife artists do not take the time to perfect the detail. Proportions, colours and textures. You do a great job at making the art realistic and create an appearance of a living animal. You do excellent work.

This painting is absolutely magnificent. Such a beautiful creature captured so elegantly on canvas. You a a true master at this art form. I am 76 now and a few years ago I tried my hand at acrylic painting. It did not go well even with simple scenes so I got discouraged and put it down. Watching you create this masterpiece has renewed my interest. Thank you for your tips and advice in this video. I was wondering where you are and what you might ask for someone to buy one of your works such as this one. I love big cats.

Incredibly beautiful. I started to paint about 6 months ago, and I started to paint with acrylic about 3 months ago. It's going pretty well for a beginner, but I do not even dream about that I will ever paint as wonderful as you.
it takes time, years to progress, but it happens if you stick with it, even for a few minutes a day. Carry a sketch book with you and draw everything you see, that's art in its earliest form. Don't use projectors, you will never be known as a "true artist" if you do. You must draw well to paint well. Projecting and tracing, then painting in the image, is merely like being a big kid with a Coloring Book!! LOL ;D
@@ronschlorff7089 I do not use projector nor other helping tools. I draw everything wit free hand. I can't even afford the projector. But as you see, many big artists using them and it makes them much easier. :)
Good for you, then you Are an artist, unlike this guy who is an "art technician", in my words. I've been drawing since childhood, now in 70's. I'd never use them, projectors, but have used the grid system, like Leonardo, and Michealangelo did, so they say. Still works well after hundreds of years. LOL. Art does not have to be "easy", but you still have to live with yourself. This guy may use modern tools, but he is only "coloring" an image, like a child with a coloring book, that he did not create by hand, so he is not a "real" artist, nor is anyone else who uses them. It's just simple laziness in my view. We all want to get right into painting soon, but the preliminary work takes time too, and you have to do it to become good at all aspects of art especially drawing. It's the foundation of it all, as you likely know already. Good luck with your art works. :D@@MssJoker1

@@ronschlorff7089 Im sure the guy could , and did do paintings without a projector . . The "art" is when you fill in that image, to make it look real, and alive. Give 10 people a print out of that same "color book"image, and tell them to finish it , and see what mess you will see! Hes not using a printer, and painting over an image that Ive seen people do and sell on Ebay! Thats cheating.

Its just tracing the projector Picture on the canvas. Its sadly just a tracing process. He is incredible with coloring but the jaguar on its own is traced

I am transitioning to acrylic because life is too short and I am getting older...waiting for the oils to dry...is hard on my need to keep painting and I am losing continuity...acrylic I can paint faster than I think and it is more intuitive...and results are better.
