    Until two years ago, I never dared to paint with acrylic and ten I saw this video that made me want to paint. You can't figure how much I owe you by giving me the motivation to improve my skills each time I start a new illustration. Thank you so much for your inspiring job.

    you have inspired me a lot, also you're videos has and still have helped me lot. I love you're techniques, are seriously useful. I do use them when i paint and people ask where i learned it, I always become a walking advertisement lol but I proudly say Jeff Miracola; due to the professional look they give and how lively the paints also look. I will soon buy Painting lessons. I cant wait to see more of you're videos because I tend stare in amazement.

    Jeff, thanks so much for teaching me some amazing new techniques. You have an incredible gift to inspire people to want to paint, have fun and just make a mess. You have helped awaken something deep inside me to create more fantasy art and pursue this genre more. I am so glad I could buy (for only $40???) your Fantasy Art Workshop series online. Thanks for doing this! Now, I need to convince my wife to be my model and wear fantasy outfits...you guys are an awesome couple!

    When you push the head into the shadows with the dark glazes, this figure gets so scary looking. I love the light tendrils coming out of the neck piece. They give it a very Sci-fi feel.

    .
    I see this creature as a "gate keeper." the mysterious glow seems to hint of another realm, one full of light, opposite of where he faces. You must overcome your fears, enter through his mouth, in order to find the promised land- a metaphor for this life.
    .
    Well done Jeff I'll see you on the other side!

    Your channel is amazing. We can see your love of painting through the way you explain things, in some channels the artist doesn't even speak and run the video faster with loud music which frustrates the beginners. But you have a way of (re)kindling this passion that got us, beginners, interested in art. Thumbs up sir!

    What a cool video.
    Im no serious artist, but I do dabble in a bit of scribbling myself.
    I describe it that way because I’ll never have the steady hand to make anything that doesn’t look like vandalism in a bathroom stall.
    But i do acknowledge the skill and precision required to execute a well translated piece of art and take it from the mind onto the canvas.
    Paint is such a strange material to work with, for me at least.
    The way it needs to be spread and layered….
    Really cool to see an image come together that way in real time.
    I can only really scribble 2D doodles with pens and markers.
    Im no true artist.
    What you do,
    takes so much skill and creativity in terms of depth, layering, colour mixture, and so much more.
    Again, very cool video.

      @jeffmiracolaartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I'm very glad you found this video useful. If by new you mean my Acrylic painting DVD, you will really enjoy it. I know I'm biased, but it truly is my most detailed video yet. I also have a Kickstarter going on right now for the creation of an OIL painting DVD. That Kickstarter ends Dec. 4th. Just keep that in mind in case you also want to learn oil painting because you can get both the oil and acrylic DVDs at a lower cost each.
      www.kickstarter.com/projects/threepointspub/jeff-miracolas-fantasy-art-oil-painting-techniques?ref=ejkupd
      Ok, enough of the sales pitch. Seriously glad you dig this video and thanks for commenting. And since you're about to start painting, be patient with yourself. Frustration will ultimately come. Just keep at it. Trust me, you'll make progress if you just don't stop.

    • @Sutton1022
      @Sutton1022 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow thanks so much! I appreciate the info about the DVD's (both of which I want!) and the encouragement on painting. I'll take that advice to heart for sure. I'm going to get my mitts on both of your DVD's as soon as I can. I've got the goal of being a proficient painter in both acrylic and oil although I've never used either lol. But, the desire is there and has been for sometime. I currently make trading cards for Cryptozoic, Topps, Upper Deck and some other places. I'm just really interested in leveling up my skills to get a better paying, more permanent gig to be honest. Been putting it off for years and I just can't do another day job. I'm sure you've been there. Anyway, thank you a TON for your time. I'm a follower of yours on Instagram too actually, my username is Sketchbooks, we've had a brief exchange or two in the past on there and you're always helpful and pleasant. I thank you for that thoroughly. Have a great one and take care! :]

      Makes total sense to me. My process of glazing over the painting multiple times is one of those things where it may take me more steps than painting without glazes, but it allows you to eventually cover more ground so you can spend the time to focus on the details in the end. Thanks for enjoying the vid.

    Thats good advice to go and just paint. All my life I have only been drawing with a pencil, whatever came to my mind. Because of that I always start by drawing somewhat way too detailed, and then putting paint over it like I'm coloring it in, cannot get over the fear of paining over what i have just drawn and loosing the creation.

      jeffmiracola Thanks Jeff I'm goon buy it for sure... I'm at a pretty descent level but I'm missing that wow factor in a lot of my work. Especially dynamic lighting and atmospheric. Perspective... My stuff is very colorful but I have never had anyone explain to me except for a couple instructors whom were fine artist, how to get depth in ones paintings. So, I'm glad you're showing it thank you.

    • @mattheweble5550

      Jeff, can you do a similar glazing technique using oils? Just really thinning out the paint with a good medium instead of water? I should just go and try it. I would have never thought of doing that until watching this. I have been trying to get the same effect on a few paintings, but I have been doing it the pain in rear way of mixing different shades of paint instead of something like this.

    • @jeffmiracolaartist
      @jeffmiracolaartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Eble Hi Matt. Absolutely you can glaze with oils. I do it all the time. It's how the old masters used to work :-) I'm working on an extensive oil painting DVD right now about my entire process and then some. But that won't be out until April. But I also have plenty of videos on my channel that show some of my oil techniques, too.

    I love art for these back and forth processes. When i'm sketching digitally i like to quickly get forms and then use the eraser on a low opacity to fade it back and then draw over it repeating the process, and i also adapted this to traditional drawing but instead of dabbing it with an eraser i lightly smudge it with my finger or some paper towel, then repeat the sketching process, and by the end this leaves me with tone that i can erase for highlights.
    I can't wait to get in more practice with traditional paints cause last time i did, i didn't even know about some of these techniques, it was more about color theory at that time. But yeah, always appreciate seeing an artist's process, thanks for sharing!^-^
    Oh! Also, if you haven't seen Wylie Beckert's work before, you should check out her channel. She is pretty dang good with her wash technique :]

    What a superb tutorial. And the work itself is brilliant! (The figure simultaneously scares and draws me to it!) Thankyou very much, Jeff Miracola. I have been very nervous when using acrylics. This clip has taught me so much. What do your glazes consist of? Simply acrylic paint diluted?

      Thank you so much for the kind words. My glazes most often consist of just paint diluted with water. However, I also glaze with acrylic glazing liquid (I use Golden brand) added to the paint. In this video I just diluted with water though.

      Thanks a lot! I'm going to embrace embarrassing myself and present another question, please. Do you dilute your paint to the same kind of consistency as the gesso, or thicker, for this illustration painting? Do you ever work on paper?

    • @jeffmiracolaartist
      @jeffmiracolaartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      throughout the course of a painting, my paints reach many different levels of consistency depending on the stage I'm at in the painting or what's called for to achieve a certain effect. That holds true for this particular painting. And I rarely do paintings on paper, but I have done it in the past. The few I've done were on gessoed watercolor paper.

    Im pretty new to painting. Im wondering why you put down colors that are different then the colors they end up being in the end. Does it enhance the painting? How do you know which colors to put down before the final layers? Talking about the 15:25 -15:30 mark.

    • @jeffmiracolaartist
      @jeffmiracolaartist  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main reason I do that kind of thing is because often times you can achieve a kind of special color by glazing one over the other that you can not get any other way. For example, by putting down a certain blue paint, then glazing a thin layer of yellow paint over it, I can get a kind of green that I can not normally get by just painting the object green to begin with. I know that sounds weird, but it's is the case :-)

      I tried what you did and it came out so much better! I dont have the glaze though so i put down a watered down coat first like how you started off with then let it dry then painted a diff color over it and it came out real good. Thanks for responding I really appreciate it. Been obsessed with your channel since I found it a few days ago.

    Great work Jeff! I have been struggling with acrylic glazing mediums and the grisaille under painting method. I spend a lot of time working the monochromatic value underpainting and it comes out great but I get stuck on the glazing.and end up going back over it with an allaprima approach. Do you use additives such as glazing medium or matte medium for your glazes, or do you just water down the acrylics as a glaze? I have had some success using colored inks but would love to hear about your method. I'm also considering your workshop dvd.

      Hi Nick. Sometimes I use just water added to the acrylics, sometimes I use a glazing medium. I only use the glazing medium when I want to either paint large areas and need the paint to stay wet longer so I can get better gradients or if I want the paint to stay wet longer so I can "sculpt" with it. That is, to put the glaze down, but then quickly work back into it with a very opaque color so I can get lots of interesting meaty or buttery textures. It feels very similar to oil painting when I do that.
      Thanks for enjoying the video.

    Hey Jeff, I love your fantasy paintings, I find them incredibly inspirational. I just had one question, I've been trying for years and years to paint realistic things so that I could eventually do horror/gore graphic novels and surrealist paintings. The only problem is that I find realistic things incredibly boring and takes the fun out of doing art for me, and when things go wrong and I can't make the painting look good, it makes me want to shoot myself. Do you think it's best to just draw fantasy things from the get-go, using references, or start from basic realism? And how do you personally practice drawing, do you study anatomy etc or just play and experiment how you see fit?
    Sorry if the questions are a bit bleh, but I'm in a weird mood lol.

    • @jeffmiracolaartist
      @jeffmiracolaartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      An artist in a weird mood? How strange ;-) LOL. Don't sweat it.
      If you find trying to paint or draw a certain way to be boring, then don't do it. Especially if your goal is to create art for graphic novels. You have to be absolutely in love with the style of art you are creating in order to sustain it for the number of pages of art you'll be making. You could be woking on your graphic novel for years.
      One of the great frustrations of being an artist is having vision, but not the skills at the moment to make that vision happen. I definitely went through this early in my career and still do at times. If your vision for your graphic novel, or art in general, is to be more realistic looking rather than cartoony, then ask yourself if this is the right time to begin your graphic novel project. Maybe it gets put on the back burner until the day your drawing/painting skills have met up with your vision. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. There are lots of paintings I chose not to do because I didn't have the skill at the time. I revisited those painting ideas later, when I finally learned how to paint better, and made successful paintings :-) Some of those ideas finally came to realization 10 years later.
      That being said, you MUST learn how to draw "boring" things. I do recommend you draw from life if you have the opportunity. Nothing, and I mean nothing, tops drawing the human figure from real life. Go draw animals at the zoo or even taxidermied animals at a public museum. Set up still lifes in your home (vase with flowers, animal skulls, fruits, metal objects, etc.) to draw. Get outside and draw nature, too. Draw those trees, plants, automobiles, buildings, etc. Once you start drawing from life, you'll start to see these things in a whole new light. You think you know what a tree looks like until you sit down to draw it, studying every limb, every imperfection, every leaf. Trust me, the boring stuff won't seem so boring after a while. And drawing the boring stuff will serve you well when you go to make your graphic novel. A graphic novel that is just panel after panel of zombie heads and spilling guts just isn't interesting. All that boring stuff is what will help you set your mood, setting, and give your characters a rich environment to live out your story.
      I personally practice drawing from life and from imagination. These days time is a factor for me. I only draw from life when I can make the time. But I do still make the time for it. But I find inspiration from other artists' works or from various books. Then I let my imagination fly and just draw. A lot of this is about repetition. The more you draw, the better you get. The more control over your medium you will have. FYI, my imaginative drawing has only been made better because of all my years of drawing the boring, realistic stuff.
      Check out this video I made a few years ago about figure drawing. It might be helpful:

      And good luck!! Hang in there.

      Wow thank you so much for your incredibly informative response! Everything you said was very true, I spent today drawing a study of a chimpanzee and took a good 9 hours to create a piece of artwork from it, and it is easily my best piece yet. I was just losing all motivation early this morning and wanted to give up, but seeing how I can create better artwork from simply doing studies, you are completely right! Thank you again.

    Question: do you have to use transparent colors when glazing or can you use any color?

    • @jeffmiracolaartist
      @jeffmiracolaartist  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Larry. By glazing, you are just brushing a thin coat of paint over the area you want to glaze. Glazing is just a way for you to slightly change the color of that particular section you are painting. You can use any color or any kind of acrylic paint. You just have to thin the paint with water or a painting medium so that the glaze of paint you brush on is thin enough to still let some of the previous color/form show through. However, you will find through experimentation that not every color is suitable for glazing. The list is too exhaustive to put here, but you'll discover this through painting. But pure colors are best for glazing: red, yellow, blue, sienna brown, etc. Colors that are not pure, or have a more opaque color mixed into them do not make for good glazes. These would be colors like turquoise, pink, cerulean blue, etc.

      jeffmiracola thank you! I will definitely try this out. The yellow glaze in this painting that made the fire green was like a magic trick, I though you could only do that type of thing digitally.

    Do you buy primary colors and mix them or just buy complete color sets

    • @jeffmiracolaartist
      @jeffmiracolaartist  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I buy all kinds of paint. I buy some sets and I buy single tubes of paint. I have maybe a hundred tubes of paint in my studio. Some colors I use right out of the tube, some colors I mix. If you don't have a lot of money, then just start of by purchasing the primary colors plus white and black. From those five colors you can mix many, many colors. However, there are colors you just will not be able to mix. For those you will need to buy single tubes of paint. Colors like Prussian Blue, Phthalo Turquoise, etc. There are many.
