I have been using washable aquarium filter (from Amazon) for years. They come in sheets of different thickness - 1/4 inch works in my full size pickup and also the wife's SUV. You can also sprinkle a very light amount of baking soda on the intake side for extra freshness. Still using the same 16x40 filter sheet purchased years ago. When I change the engine oil, I pull out the filters, wash them, let them air dry, lightly sprinkle with baking soda and reinstall. Thanks for your video.

Interesting, I like the baking soda part they seem to be adding that to filters nowadays. I know in the stores they are running like $20+ the cheaper ones are never in stock and you have online order them to get them.

I'm going to try this, but with organic cotton flannel and chucks of activated charcoal 😉

Instead of foam you can use standard furnace filter media....remove the old media, then cut the furnace filter to size and glue the edges into the plastic frame. It is not washable, but you probably want to throw the media out after a year anyway. The money charged for these filters is insane. No, that's not right. The filter companies are not insane; it's the people who buy them that are insane. 🤪

it's an idea worth exploring.. Anyone with hayfever etc could add a layer of carbon/hepa material, because it looks like there's some thickness left available in the 'cage'

I guess just gotta make sure you don't inhibit the airflow too much.. could wear down the fan motor.. just a guess.

I think my old camry used only a carbon sponze that was not removable. It disintegrated over 20 years of use. I may put a sheet on there as well. I just think with inflation and unrest in China best to figure out ways to self substain when prices skyrocket and availability is a problem.

thanks, I don’t think you need so many zip ties . One would do as the airflow pushes the filter down.

A lot of the normal filters doubled in price this past year, especially at local places like autozone. Unless of course you take a chance on an amazon no name brand filter where you have no idea what chemicals are in it. The more we can avoid inflated costs the better.

You arent' filtering anything with that sponge you put on. Good luck driving through smokey and dusty environments

These are the types of filters cars used to have, they protected the Hvac. Now they use those higher merv rated filiters for the comfort of the driver, everything is overkill in cars now. After 2 months I had leafs and some dirt just washed it off. It will not stop exhaust fumes but even the better filters have problems with fumes. They aren't exactly charcoal filters. The airflow through these homemade filters are great, I always though the pleated held back a lot of airflow.

I literally just did this because the paper filters restricts the airflow and buying a k&n cabin air filter is overkill because I bought one for the air filter but not for the cabin air filter. Having some kind of filter is better than nothing. Driving through dusty and smokey areas you should have the recirculation on anyways. I don't care for the extra filtration but making sure some kind of filter is there to keep bigger particles out of the fan and I will change it more often. In Florida summer heat I want more air and less filtration

It certainly is filtering something , what do you want to filter and at what cost? Do you work in the filter business?
