    When I was a young airmen on the aircraft carrier, I'd perform ventilation maintenance and our filters were stainless steel. You could easily see through the filters, they weren't anything special, but the vent shops would run the filters through a dishwasher, spray oil on them once they were dry and issue them back to us to install. This comment may not add any value to the content you've posted, but I thought others might find this interesting.

    Great content! I've been in the HVACR industry going on 6yrs now. With most of my customer base being commercial hotel high rises, restaurants & storage facilities I've been using the blue filter media the last 4yrs. In the kitchens of restaurants, I find extreme conditions with additional grease and flower causing expensive repairs to the refrigeration equipment that are in close proximity to fryers and breading stations. I use the blue media as a disposable to protect the condenser coils and it most certainly helps when doing scheduled preventive maintenance, On the residential side whenever I install a new unit or have scheduled p.m. I use the cheapest fiberglass filters with a Merv rating below 4 and recommend customers change them whenever they pay the electric bill every month. I like the idea of implementing the orange media and the canola oil is a great idea when reusing. Should make the cleaning process easier. However, the commercial kitchens are so bad that I have no choice but to throw them away and replace them with new.

      Dusty house no matter what filter your using,check the compartment or return air to system and make sure it’s not pulling unfiltered air into system. From the attic is one of the major offenders and under the walls of the return air compartment. A high MERV filter will cause a system to pull air from any source other than the filter,path of least resistance.

      getting too high of a merv is gonna reduce airflow (maybe change head pressure if too much).
      Finding a 4 merv is getting impossible locally. Getting 7's is tough to even order.
      In the harsh conditions you had in kitchens? You saved their butts for sure. Average homeowner? I don't think i'd do this in an older home and not with animals for sure.
      Folks will forget and pressures are gonna go stupid.

    I have been investigating my dust problem for a while now and what I discovered is that a large percent of dust does not come from the HVAC intake. It comes from the Human body as well as fibers from things like our clothing and blankets and stuff. But I was surprised to discover how much dust is really skin cells and dandruff. And it really only came to light when I bought a mesh fabric office chair. I noticed that the mesh was allowing all the stuff flaking off my body to accumulate on the underside and backside of the chair. A thick coating of dust. I realized it was not from the air but my body.

      @@fool9111z Vacuuming and opening windows doesn't clear out the dust either, sure you'll get a lot of it vaccumed up but it'll blow it around too. HAVCs have intake vents that help circulate the air to the furnace/ac so if you don't use a filter, all that dust/ dirt is just being recycled back into the whole house over and over again.

    I just went down and changed out my furnace filter, it was the last one out of my stock, I bought quite a few 3 packs of these 20"x25"x4" filters a couple of years ago. I just ordered two of the screens and a roll of the orange filter stuff, along with some large cord/cable clips to hold the orange filter to the electrostatic filter. Good video for those that will do this and probably the best use of canola oil.
    When I did construction defect litigation, I often represented the HVAC contractor named in the suit. Homeowners would state low register airflow when HVAC was in operation. I'd go over to the return air for a look and observe the air filter almost black and being sucked into the duct. I'd ask the homeowner when they last changed the filter, and some didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I told them at this point they should have the system cleaned by a pro. What falls into the floor registers gets blown back out. There is filter material available for the registers.

Also I have a couple Oldie but goodie Hunter air filter fans on the order of what you have there. I enjoyed your video on how to improve air economically. My biggest concern is that a person may forget to change their tactified filter which would cause the furnace to cycle on auto reset main high limit. This would greatly shorten the heat exchanger life span. I've been using the 4.5 " deep by 20 by 16 MERV 8 filters. My returns are on the high sidewall I replace my filter every 12 to 18 months. I would recommend REME LED duct light which produces aerosol peroxide which have past lab tests to kill 99% of airborne viruses. Best Regards

      First off, your statement of a person forgetting to change their tactified filter... if they forget to do something that is this important they deserve all of the issues and ramifications that come from their lack of caring. I'm not trying to sound mean here, but my dad always taught me "I forgot" is the worst excuse a person can have. That is like telling the police officer when you get pulled over for going 90mph, that "I forgot" that the speed limit was 55mph. Thanks for watching John, have a great day. Guru Mike

    Very interesting video. The Winix 5500 is a decent air purifier for the price but it is definitely NOT the best air purifier on the market by a long shot. There are many other solutions on the market that perform better than the Winix 5500 for particle filtration and odors/VOCs. Plus, it only accommodates smaller-sized rooms. I think the alternative HVAC filtration ideas with the sprays is interesting - and I would be very interested to see a 3rd party lab do a test on it and its performance vs. other MERV-rated filters. I have found that electrostatic solutions in general, are not too great for filtering particles, but, I'm open-minded and perhaps with the addition of the media and spray - they work much better. Thanks for "thinking outside the box".👍

    Hi. Thanks for making this. I’m about to make this change in my HVAC but just a suggestion, with many people asking in the comments on how to do it in their HVAC (what frame, how to mount, what direction the material, etc) maybe it would be great to see it implemented on an HVAC so people can get ideas on the frame and how to actually fit it in. I bought the reusable filters from Home Depot and the orange media from Amazon. I have a 4” and a 1” spot on my hvac and thinking the 4” spot might work but not sure how to mount the media to the filter so it stays. Clips? Anything better?

    Quick question, if the filters I use already are 1in thick and the metal filter/frame to be used by this method is 1in thick, does that leave room for the orange filter material. Will compressing it tight against the metal filter to get it to fit hinder the airflow too much like you mentioned. Or should just a reusable metal filter by itself be used? Thanks

    • @MrKnowItAllGuru
      @MrKnowItAllGuru  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you can get it in there, we highly recommend using it, compressing it will not hurt it a bit. Thanks for watching and asking Vinny, have a great day. Guru Mike

    I bought a 16x25x1 metal filter. It barely fits into the spot where the filter goes. There is no way that the orange will go in either. Help!

    The filter slot is only deep enough for the metal electrostatic filter. Can I use it without the blue or orange layer? Good content. Thanks

      You can, we suggest using the concoction we share on the metal filter, it will help it out, it won't work as well without the filter layers, but it will definitely help. Thanks for watching, have a great day tricia. Guru Mike

    Im mot sure how I would support the filters under the grates.

    thanks for the great video and details. how often should i change the orange filter up the ceiling for my HVAC for a 2500 sq ft home? also what is the order in which the filters go in the ceiling based HVAC air intake? is it the orange goes in first with its white part facing down and then the aluminuim filterthe last ?

    • @ChristopherSmith-ek1wr
      @ChristopherSmith-ek1wr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The aluminum filter goes in first then the orange filter white side facing down. As for changing them I go every 30 days or when visibly dirty whichever comes first.

    • @MrKnowItAllGuru
      @MrKnowItAllGuru  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember my friend, believe it or not, those filters are like a pool filter, the dirtier they are, the better the filtration you get. Now with that being said, most filters that you put in your furnace have to be replaced every 30 days, you can easily go 45 to 60 days before pulling these out and cleaning them saving you time and money. Now if you have a lot of dust and pet hair etc you may choose to clean them sooner than that. The aluminum filter goes in first followed by this material amzn.to/3Ff9XnO Thank you for watching, have a great day my friend. Guru Mike

    Our problem is IN the duct work. WHEN they built our home..back in ‘08, they must have left the ducts OPEN for some period of time before drying it in OR just didn’t complete it in a timely manner. That being said, here in central Texas the wind BLOWS like crazy all year ‘round stirring up sand, dust, etc..crap that’s super-fine AND HAS COLLECTED in the duct work..

    Do yourself a favor and switch out the 1" filter box for the 5 or larger. Much more surface area and your filters will last up to six months and more. Less work for your furnace blower and better heating and ac action. It's a better solution and it drives down the cost of filters.

    The listing on the Nordic Blue states not washable. Is the Orange one more washable? Our HVAC filter vent/opening is 20x20,and it is 'open',so would I cut the product to fit inside a cheap filter to hold it in place? Thanks.

      We wash the blue all the time, they just want you to buy more. Just use a little dish soap with warm water, wring it out and let it dry. Here's another great product we found to use on your filters amzn.to/3jBXu63 And yes, just get creative with getting it to fit your filter frame.
