That point about kasrkin teaching you break points is really great. Learning and understanding the likelihood of killing or injuring an opposing operative is crucial to getting better at the the game, and kasrkin teach that very well.
My friend and I jumped in with the Octarius set and it was a big learning curve with Guard and Kommandos. It took a few tough games with Guards before it finally clicked with how they should be played and finally won. Balancing positioning specialists, and being a horde team at the same time made learning skills and board rules a bit hectic. He played Intercessors for a few games and was able to pick them up and then look into the terrain based rules and more faster. Definitely agree on all of these if someone's new and isn't sure where to start.
I picked Vet Guard as my first team and have played them about every other week for about 6 months now. I still forget crucial things like In Death, Atonement for the demo vet to get another big kill from him after my opponent focuses him after he got a double kill. But they’re a super fun team though with so many options.
You guys are great. I literally learned how to play this game by watching your videos. You guys do such a good job talking through your actions and decision making processes. It is so helpful for a noob like me!
I'd also add Kill Team Justian - no equipment, bog-standard ploys. Rules must be aquired... elsewhere and the models can be kitbashed or proxied easily.
i think grey knights are a good starting point. decent wounds and saves. just a leader and 5 warriors. all have the same gun, give them all falchions and everything can reroll missed hits, which can help minimize feels bad rolls for a new player. psychic actions can be ignored and not really effect the way they play. simple equipment and ploy options too. all built from one box, plus very easy to paint
I'm a new player, i found the corsairs so cool looking that they got me into the game. I'm very happy caus i've never heard anything bad about them. Balanced, cool themed, noob friendly, not frustrating to play against, feel good to play. Looks like they did a good job with this one
That's interesting to hear, I always imagined the Eldar teams would be some of the worse for new players, because they're so fragile and relatively limited in numbers.
For me, I think most Compendium teams are a good choice for a first army. You can use pretty much whatever mini's you have, basically all of the different factions have a list, and they tend to have pretty basic special rules so not too complex. Another great video guys, can't wait for the next video!!!
As a beginner, it's important to just enjoy the ride of things going wrong or not going to plan your first dozen or so games. Some hilarious things will happen (often at your own expense) that you were really not expecting or could not have anticipated. I have the same approach anytime I play against another team for the very first time. I say to myself "well this will be interesting!" but I will come away with a better understanding of not only that enemy team, but my team as well. If you're playing against a good opponent, they'll have no issue going over the mechanics of their team and their big "gotcha" moves to watch out for. If someone is just looking for an easy victory, they're probably not a good opponent to be having regular games with anyways. Enjoy the ride :)
As a potential new player that has no terrain and I'm looking at the Starter Set to get going, maybe some guidance on what non-GW terrain to use to get the full experience without paying the GW tax. I want to play the game, but I only have so much money. Really good list. After the Starter Set I was thinking Kasrkin and Scout Squad, but I was also thinking Pathfinders and Heirotek. Lots of options, that's for sure. Coming from Marvel Crisis Protocol though, KT has a ways to go before it has THAT many options. 😉
I'm not sure how well you you find this but styrofoam is amazing at this sort of stuff you cut it break and glue it back together now I don't know how well it is to paint but I imagine getting some cheap store paints to slap on it wouldn't be a bad idea!
I think kommandos are/were a great team to start with because everyone looked like what they were, the sniper looked like a sniper, the rocket boy looked like a guy with rocket launcher. Especially because they could charge from conceal let you be safer early on in the game. They also had synergy but didn’t have so much and everyone could run around and do their thing. Plus after you play them for a bit you probably have gotten really good at them and can play them competitively.
I recently got into KT (been playing regular 40k) and I chose Gellerpox as my first team and I've played vs fairly mobile teams so far. Yes, I don't necessarily get killed. But if your enemy knows how to kite you while shooting off your vermin, you very quickly run out of chances to connect and have to try and sit objectives. I know my performance can be improved with better positioning, activation sequences and smarter use of tac/strat ploys, but I wouldn't call it easy.
solid vid! you know your kill teams but man, I really enjoyed watching this for the smooth editing making cut together stuff seem like all natural continuation within the same breath and hey, I am the big fan of the lil music jingle thingies. puts a smile on my face! :)
I played my first game yesterday at a nearby game store. I’m in the process of putting together a custodes army for regular 40k and decided to try them out there. Didn’t win, but had a good time.
Love the video. I often pull out my strike force justice league (painted Justians as justice league) Not only are they my coolest looking models where people click with them more as they are characters they have seen before but they are such a great team which covers a lot of core rules in the team. You get a flavor of each of the special rules that other teams have Brutal Smoke grenade Blast No cover Heavy A model with only 2 ⚪ movement Plasma Ignore obscurity Invun saves Lots of CP to play with for mistakes And a very forgiving team So it covers a lot of core rules without having too many additional rules, plus no equipment means less brain load.
When I was new to KT, I played and lost hard with: Kroot (pre-buff), Breachers, and Vet Guard. Keep in mind I assembled and painted each of these before playing them and it was kind of demoralising. But then I put together Kommandos and they instantly clicked and I was finally winning/close games/ties. So I highly recommend Kommandos for beginners too.
The compendium was to get non-Astartes players some use from their models. GW even has a free ruleset for one team. www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/5a7RlS5vbFWvaWZD.pdf
I really enjoyed this video and hope you expand on this format! My personal wrong opinion good starter teams would be Blooded, Kommandos and Hand of the Archon. All of which are reasonably strong with only one box and have mechanics letting you capitalize on typical beginner mis-plays. HotA gets stronger playing KILLL team and blooded let you shoot into melee, when you overextended a model. Kommandos just let you survive an attack that would have deleted your model and let you sneak around and still give somebody a hard time.
Especially since as of today (02/14/2024) the Scout Squad Kill Team complete rules are "officially" available on Warhammer Community for free. Happy Valentine's Day! 💘
I just started with Blades of Khaine. I feel like I made a mistake lol. But hey, at least I had to buy 2 more boxes. Love Aspect Warriors though, gonna stick it out.
I've only played 5 games so far but tyranids seemed a good starting point. I just changed to corsairs and i got soundly beaten but i think i know where i went wrong.
I have loaned out my Kinband as a "here have some fun (and probably lose)" team. I think they are a good team to learn cover mechanics and they get rid of pesky things like traversal and jump tests that can bog a new player down with too much analysis of movement range. They are squishy and they don't have much reroll, but they tick the _fun_ box to get someone into the game. Totally viable one box team as well which is absolutely an important aspect.
This is going to sound strange, but I think Vet Guard are amazing for learning the game. They're a bit complex yes, but I think if you stick to the ordinance option with 1 box of models you have a very good opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the game progressively
Although I believe that Intercession is easier, I wanted to mention that the Tactical Squad introduces the players to both gunner types and a sargeant that could use combi weapons. So, it can be an squishy team, but an elite team with access to two plasma guns and a rocket launcher is very dangerous and can be fun to play
Would you guys consider a kill team lore vid? Just a recap of all the stories involved. No one is doing it. It would be awesomely in youre intro voices. Even some kill team focus vids would be awesome! Love your stuff need moar
Team 0: any compendium team. If I'm starting someone out, I always run them with compendium and run compendium myself. I also don't do strategic ploys, equipment, or tactical ploys (barring CP reroll). It really helps to cut down the mental load of learning kill team's rules
I feel like the most important thing is to find your playstyle, cuz I started with Corsairs and I do not move enough, I hardly ever touch the middle of the board and play super heavy into long ranged attacks and they are not the team for that. I play Hearthkyn now and I've been playing a lot better because that team works well with my playstyle and I can actually use the tac ploys, I don't think I ever really got to use any corsair tac ploys cuz they're so situational. also for anyone building a corsair team, my advice for what to make: - Gunner with Blaster cuz this team really lacks AP damage aside from leader and duellist. - Don't bother with kurnite hunter cuz it sucks so hard, just build another rifle warrior - Maybe on the soul weaver, extra APL is good but healing is a waste since they're elves they die in 2 hits anyways so you won't get any 1HP gangs that often.
Thanx for another good video lads! Kasrkin vs vet guard was a tough decision for me to start. Kasrkin look better, but… the death korp of Krieg won me over 💀
I first used the Commorite kill team, half Kabalite and half Wyches - I demolished whatever my mate threw at me. An easy and fun team, Kabalites shoot, Wyches charge up and melee.
Definitely think Vet guard is good for new players. They also have access to your default gunner options, and some standard staples like comms, melee guy, medic, etc. I think being a horde team is great too, since it means you have a lot of wiggle room to die and not have your game be over. 1 Intercessor death is a massive loss, 1 VG loss is nothing
You have to love the 80s video game music spliced into the video. I was thinking that Strike force Justian would be a good team. Its so simple there is not even equipment options. It also gives you a taste of a wide variety of marines.
i taught my girlfriend how to play kill team with tomb world, they're EXTREMELY forgiving, especially if you just let her use the reanimation ploy as many times as she wants
I know they got rid of disgustingly resilient in the main game, but it still exists in kill team does it? I have some plague marines and pox walkers, and I'm thinking of trying to play a bit of kill team
@@crossedpolars DR lives on in killteam, thank goodness. They’re a fun team, though imo it’s better to just take plague marines and not bother with the poxwalkers unless you really like them.
@@TalkingMonocle good info thanks! I'm getting back into the hobby after about 15 yrs, so still figuring out the lay of the land. Will probably start out with a fire team of each as I only have 5 marines haha. I think it's kind of a shame lorewise that are not tough and slow anymore, they are just... Slow.
@@crossedpolars glad to be of help! with 5 marines you're only 1 off from a full team. Yeah in big scale 40k i'm a lot less into their current identity of just....being slow. Killteam is where the REAL death guard live
I started my first game by playing with Pathfinder and I find it very overwhelming. Since it is the kill tram of 12 operative and I play in 4 people free for all format it become really chaotic.
lucky for me i already have the corsairs and scout marines! my first couple games i tried the blades of khaine with dire avengers and striking scorpions, it feels way too big brain for me as a noob lol, gonna try the marines this week.
Im surprised custody/sister of silence got not mentioned easy as to play decently competive with the option of running only 4 models very easy to manage
I buyed Gellerpox, painted them right away, played them three times, lost three times, then sold them. So, it stinged a little when i heard they are beginner friendly. :D
I completely get what you mean and I posted a comment about it as well. Gellerpox were my first "active" team and I lost a ton of games. Playing them is extremely unique compared to other teams. Every model is there for a reason, losing the wrong one at the wrong time in the wrong spot can lose you the entire game, something you would not expect from such a horde like team. If your hulks die, your mutants and glitchlings can't do objectives. If your glitchlings / mutants die, you have a bunch of killy hulks that will barely do shit point wise and vermin can play a key part in taking other units down. They are extremely, extremely far from being beginner friendly imo. I nearly spat out my drink when they said that gellerpox are were forgiving mechanics wise. Kroot, Vets, Blooded, those teams are forgiving. Gellerpox? I have yet to lose with a team that is not gellerpox because I lost a single model at the wrong time because of a single misplay. but after playing a ton of other teams I've returned to my beloved gellerpox and I do like them a lot now. Just takes a ton of time to actually be efficient with them.
Would painting each member of your team with a distinct marking be helpful for who has what gear or roll? I'm playing veteran guardsman from the starter set.
Should have watched this video 3 years ago when I started playing KT with Void Dancers 😂. Hated the game and didnt like to play. 3 Years later I still get a brain aneurism playing void dancers but I also have 12 other teams - lol😅- that give me less of a hard time. Good suggestions.
Gellerpox Infected being a really forgiving team gameplay wise is a hell of a hot take. Unlike Vets or Farstalkers, you NEED certain operatives in certain spots to win the game. Even losing a glitchling in a certain spot can lose you the game because your vermin can't do shit and your hulks basically only exist to kill stuff. If you lose a hulk early because you did not see that angle the enemy had on you there is nothing to protect the glitchling. Gellerpox are a gigantic noob trap imo. They were the first team I've actively played and I'd rather field my sisters or t'au to turn off my brain. To add, I'd never suggest gellerpox to a beginner for another reason: You barely learn the game. You learn how to pilot gellerpox, which is a completely different thing to most other teams. You don't really learn about shooting, LoS rules (which are the most complicated for beginners) and stuff like vantage points. I mean even the equipment thing - yea, it's nice to not actively think "did I give this farstalker meat? does he still have it?", but again, the player is not learning about that mechanic. I'd rather suggest a team that has a little bit of everything. Because switching from gellerpox to any other team feels like switching to a completely different game and you have to learn so many new things (and unlearn other things too - suddenly your guys don't win 99% of 1v1s)
Off work late? Too tired to listbuild but want to play kill team? Try twenty Ork Boyz. Twenty Ork Boyz back to back. No Burnaz, no Nobz, just Boyz. Stikkbombz too. You will certainly not regret running twenty Ork Boyz.
How close were Kommandos to making this list? I used to always advocate for new players to start with them until I branched out and realized how heavily I relied on charge from conceal
I think they're too positioning heavy and rules-dense for new players. I also think, like you said, they don't give an image of "default" in kill team.
I wouldn’t recommend an elite team for new players because you will lose ur first games for sure in my opinion. I would recommend Kommandos for new players. They are very strong and you have a good chance of winning against inexperienced player’s even if u don’t use all mechanics they offer
How could you not mention Grey Knights? Give them all falchions, suddenly they reroll all melee and ranged for free. 6 space marine bodies with all the benefits. Can use gear to make 1 way more tanky or killy. And psy powers that add a bunch if utility (also great tac ops/ploys). I can't tgink of anything easier bseises custodes (which i don't recommend for new players as they dont give a proper representation of the gameplay for most other teams).
It's really hard to talk about this game in terms of what's "newbie-friendly" or "starter" or "easy" without going into gatekeeping territory. Someone will get interested because they see Necrons, then another player will be like, "Oh that team is THE WORST TEAM for new players." Like, what the hell? Is this person a baby? Do they only get to play with stupid baby toys for babies? It feels bad! People are showing up to the party and having the door slammed in their faces. But here, I think you guys did a great job holding the door open, framing the topic appropriately, talking in general about the nuances of the game, and pointing out some of the stuff new players tend to stub their toes on. The next time I see an interested new player ask for some recommendations, I'm linking this video.
Totally wrong. Kommandos is the best beginner team. Each one is a specialist and it's obvious what his role is. Also, the fluff for orcs is best to get over losing models after playing badly and aggressiveness is rewarded. I am sipping a martini listening to how wrong you are. Cheers!
I’m a newbie who tried a whole bunch of armies one after the other and I settled on Kommandos even though I’m an Elf guy because of all the reasons you stated.

Counterpoint. They are not actually very fun in the kill team sense. You just play 2 squads of 40k.
Scions is the team I use to teach new players the game. They have a pretty good learning curve and are very friendly in regards of rules and equipment
They can grab objectives for free too.
A nice succinct video… as a new KT player i started with the teams i wanted to play and im glad that Scouts is a good one :D

The Death Guard compendium team is super easy to pick up, and you get to roll a ton of dice with your disgustingly resilient
Since it is the kill tram of 12 operative and I play in 4 people free for all format it become really chaotic.
lucky for me i already have the corsairs and scout marines! my first couple games i tried the blades of khaine with dire avengers and striking scorpions, it feels way too big brain for me as a noob lol, gonna try the marines this week.
also wanna try the compendium craftworld team, i play eldar in big 40k so i have everything for that already!
I always sort of imagine you guys, kind of like Rick (but sober) and Morty.
Im surprised custody/sister of silence got not mentioned easy as to play decently competive with the option of running only 4 models very easy to manage
Still hanging out to see you guys play the Votann. Struggled with them a lot and curious to see them used
Grey Knights, all with Falchions. all rerolls, bugger all options.
You guys are great! Keep it up
Gellerpox not having loadouts sold it to me day one i find it out.
Today i bought Hierotek circle.
And now have an understanding... It may be rough
You guys are hilarious
Now do a video on the top 5 most complicated or not noob-friendly teams. I'll start with the most obvious one: Warpcoven.
Did I heard Giant Steps and Strasbourg St Denis?
I'm actually looking to get into Kill Team. Nice video for Noobs. Is there a Custodes kill team? What's your opinion on it?
Should have watched this video 3 years ago when I started playing KT with Void Dancers 😂. Hated the game and didnt like to play.
3 Years later I still get a brain aneurism playing void dancers but I also have 12 other teams - lol😅- that give me less of a hard time. Good suggestions.
What do you think about Chaos Legionaries for new players?
Thoughts on Orcs?
Would you say that compendium (1) kill teams are more easy to learn and to play than the more bespoke teams?
This all seems like great advice that I’m going to ignore in favour of the cowboy bird men
Follow your dreams 🐦
That was great. What about the Phobos Marines as a starter? I would also appreciate if you made some tutorial videos on how to improve at Kill Team.
phobos are arguably one of the most technical teams in the game imo, so no not beginner friendly imo
Scouts are a 10 man also Kasrkin get 2 scouting options with one of the operatives
Can we just get this out there how the fuck are deathwatch not the poster boyz of kill team and still dont have a proper bispoke kill team yet!
I don't like 5 the aesthetics of any of these armies, feelsbadman
no strike force justian but corsairs? wtf?
IntercessTion 😉
It’s the Canadian spelling 🧠 🧠 🧠
@@MountainsideTabletop like how we pronounce it "leftenant" but it's spelled "lieutenant" 🤣
Incorrect Comment
"Lowest Mentalo of any team in the game" th-cam.com/video/ggNPhZduh3k/w-d-xo.html
Your timestamps are all effed up. Bad spelling in the vid too damn.
There's a lot of jargon and terms you don't explain for a "noob friendly" video. wtf...
I like the idea of kill team, but no one here wants to buy the terrain or rule books.
you put Gellerpox Infected on a "best anything" tier list. You have intrinsically failed the new folks and hurt the game and fandom.
Love the video.
I often pull out my strike force justice league (painted Justians as justice league)
Not only are they my coolest looking models where people click with them more as they are characters they have seen before but they are such a great team which covers a lot of core rules in the team.
You get a flavor of each of the special rules that other teams have
Brutal
Smoke grenade
Blast
No cover
Heavy
A model with only 2 ⚪ movement
Plasma
Ignore obscurity
Invun saves
Lots of CP to play with for mistakes
And a very forgiving team
So it covers a lot of core rules without having too many additional rules, plus no equipment means less brain load.
