      I would almost guarantee Steffis power would be about the same as today's WTA tennis. Also her consistency would regularly beat almost every player outside the top 20. That says 2 things: 1 grafs game is timeless and 2 today's wta tennis is awful quality

    Graf used to hit that forehand so late but my word was she fast and beautiful to watch. Her slice backhand sat up quite high during her slump and did not cut through the court. Later she would change racquets and fix the backhand which contributed to two of her most dominant seasons in 95 & 96.
    Gabi played and incredible match. Her game style often gave Steffi nightmares. She should have won more GS titles imo.

    • @gk891
      @gk891 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In 1990, after taking some time off due a thumb injury, many noticed that Graf's backhand had changed. She was hitting it much closer to her body than before and she wasn't opening the face of her racket as well as she did before. It made it go from a hard and vicious slice backhand into a short and choppy one. Plus she was hitting it crosscourt all of the time as her down the line slice backhand disappeared. She finally amended these issues in early 1995.

    Gabriela was a fabulous player my god, the insane talent-but her style was so laborious it’s no surprise she’d retire at 26. If only she could have had a stronger serve to get more free points, been a little tougher mentally, she’d be in the 4-6 slam range I think. She was better than Aranxta, Martinez by far, and doesn’t get the credit she deserves for really being Steffi’s greatest rival.

    • @1Rdby
      @1Rdby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      You are correct…. Sabatini’s talent was insane. That serve was such a liability unfortunately, and I always thought her general nature/personality was too sweet and soft. She was missing an edge or determination that marks the all time greats.
      The way she played in the early 90s was just amazing. It was such a shame that she pretty much abandoned this aggressive net rushing style in 1993. Add that to the horrible Seles stabbing, Navratilova’s career ending, and capriati moving backwards, and the women’s game really suffered. It wasn’t that exciting watching Slam finals with Sanchez-vicario retrieving enough to annoy Graf into errors.

      @@1Rdby , Yes, I felt strange that she had good overhead, but her serve wasn't as good. On the other hand, Graf's serve was great, but not overhead. I thought service would be the easiest to fix, as there's no opponents involved. I can say Gaby was sweet, friendly and humble. I met het at a hotel in Melbourne for half an hour. I sometimes wish Gaby had had more killer's instinct, but then it's not her.

    When Sabatini's game gelled and she could protect her weak serve she was terrific, but in the long run she didn't have easy power and her serve betrayed her. Be it a mental or technical limitation Graf did not take many balls early, and throughout this match let the ball play her. Monica took her time away blasting the ball, Martina took time away by volleying, and Sabatini bought her time with all her spins. Sabatini was rarely out of position. Her forehand was working -- often it would land short and Graf could bury it in the corners, but not on this day!

    The 1991 and 1992 Semifinals between Sabatini and Graf might be two of the best women's matches I've ever seen. When Sabatini was playing confidently and aggressively, she was just on point. Graf always played confidently and aggressively. It's just too bad that Sabatini didn't play this way more consistently, otherwise, there's no doubt in my mind she would have won many more Slams. In the finals of both years, she played very passively against Seles and Sanchez-Vicario, respectively. It was very frustrating to see after the amazing matches she played against Graf the round before.

    Steffi, whose game became more predictable from 90 on, was also less consistent in the rallies. Gabriela, who always had the game to disrupt Steffi's sliced backhand, had been on a winning streak since the end of the 90s. She played a lot more towards the net and revealed Steffi's weaknesses. Steffi could not hold the shock here. Gabriela was so much solid and powerful Beautiful flat backhand from Steffi down to line at 18 ! Why didn't she make that more often ?

I agree with the comment below, that there was less power in women's tennis back then, but tons of variety....long rallies, chip and charge, etc. It's funny how people in recent years say that Roger Federer came up with the SABR (sneak attack by roger). Gaby Sabatini was doing that way back then. She did that in this match against Steffi. I miss that era of women's tennis.

      Kazuaki. I think Gaby had even more variety than Martina. She had more variety than anyone period. Martina had the better serve and was so committed to serve and volley. When Gaby made up her mind to attack over and over, she was deadly. She retrieved incredibly well, had a biting backhand slice, a very effective topspin cross court backhand and a rifle backhand down the line. Her overhead was a weapon off both sides and she hit a very heavy forehand that she could flatten when she wanted to attack. Her volleys were amazing and her reach and drop volleys were something else. She also passed incredibly well. If she stayed committed to attacking she’d have won a few more slams. It was such a loaded tour though. The depth was unreal

But it's true, the other players, especially Sabatini, had adapted to Grafs gameplay and strategies. In Steffis whole career, Sabatini is the only player to beat her with a double digit number (11 out of 40), second is Navratilova (9 out of 18), 3rd Arantxa (8 out of 36). Interesting to see how Sabatini’s technique was much more geared towards significant amounts of top spin, especially in contrast to Steffi’s flatter hitting, in the 80s/90s - uniquely setting a new standard of technique for women - and then came Justine Henin-Hardenne to carry that flame on! I do wonder if Sabatini had played a bit flatter like Steffi, she would have got some easier points…conversely, interesting to see how Steffi struggled with higher spin balls because of her Eastern forehand grip - how would it be if she had evolved her grip to a more western grip…? 🤔 But no doubt wonderful to see her elusive one-have backhand drive instead of her usual slice, her footwork and balance!

      Athleticism (speed!), resilience, mental strength, consistency in your strokes - all this is in your genes as well. It is talent. And Steffi had it in spades.
      Sadly Steffi had almost constantly to fight injuries in the 1990s. Plus those two devastating family scandals (blackmail, tax). So we got to see only glimpses of what could have been, for instance in the Wimbledon 88, the Wimbledon 92, the AO 94 finals.
      It may sound funny but for me Steffi Graf is the biggest underachiever of the open era. Imagine Steffi with a career like Evert, no scandals, almost no injuries until age 35….

But still, there was no player of the class of Steffi after her, with all due respect to Serena and other great players. And Gaby ... is the most versatile player in the history of tennis (which I associate) and also one of the most talented, but her biggest problem was not the serve but .... psyche. Very shy, and completely without the "killer" instinct on the court (Stefi had it) she lacked the will to win anytime, anywhere and take advantage of every opportunity on the court from the course of the game she had, on the other hand focused on playing 100% with her skills and potential, she was able to give every player a hard time, and really solidly. However, she lacked that winning instinct that characterizes sports champions. She won many matches and tournaments with talent and skills alone, but not with her head or mentality.

Being on top means a super hard ass and a mega strong psyche and she never had it and still doesn't, plus constant contact with the press etc. and the press didn't give her peace and they followed her everywhere even though she wasn't number 1. If it was, they'd just follow her. .. She may be the nicest tennis player in the WTA and the nicest person you know, but she never had a "killer" instinct. She had the skills and she didn't. She lacked the willingness to do something different than expected on the court, she was preparing her actions for too long, she played one way too much instead of spreading the opponent more around the corners, you can see in her game a slight lack of certainty, a certain plan or, if you prefer, a strategy for victory. Steffi did it in this match, but she missed Gaby's "pair" too rarely, and she certainly could. Steffi in this match, however, played too poorly, lost too much and that's why Gaby won it. If Gany always played 100% of what she could do, she would be a "court monster", but she would have to replace her psyche and mentality, and she absolutely did not care about that. Graf skipped 1992 Aus open and started working with her then new couch Heinz who gave her much needed change in approach. With most of the personal problems solved and physically in a better shape, she started the fight to become No1. She became very closer to No 1 ranking by spring of 1993 before Seles was stabbed. Post this tournament steffi would lose to Gaby 1 more time (again in Florida 3 weeks later) and winning the next 8 straight matches against the same opponent.

    • @gk891

      She didn't skip the Australian Open by choice. She had planned to play but came down with the German measles. When she came back later that year, I thought she looked kind of second rate. But to her credit, she fought valiantly to at least get to the French Open finals and made the final match against Seles close. She looked better in the later rounds at Wimbledon and during her Fed Cup matches that summer afterwards. But then she looked second rate again at the Olympics and the U.S Open. And while she did win four indoor titles after the U.S Open, many of those wins were very unconvincing IMO and she was kind of fortunate to win some of them as many were by the skin of her teeth. But I agree that she did look better in the spring of 1993 but she still wasn't anywhere near her best. I thought she looked much better in 1994 when she finally switched rackets.

In 1992 she really put in some odd performances at times. Totally disappearing mentally in the third set here, losing a set 6-0 to Sanchez at the French, playing a very ropey, tired looking match against Capriati at the Olympics, playing very poorly at the US Open including an error strewn loss to Sanchez there, then finally playing an awful match against McNeil at the season ending championships, just completely looking like she didn't want to be there.

      In 1990, at the age of only 16, Seles became the youngest ever champion of the French Open. In just a two-year period (from early 1991 to early 1993), Seles amassed a whopping 22 singles titles and made it to the final of 33 of the 34 tournaments she entered. Even more impressive, she lost only a single match in a grand slam tournament, winning six of the seven majors in which she competed. Sabatini went on to defeat Steffi 11 times in the next 21 matches they played between 1988 and 1992. Additionally, in the early 90s, Seles was clearly the number 1 player in the world. If Graf wasn't often injured and didn't have the off-court distractions with her father, perhaps Seles would not have overtaken Graf for the number ranking. However, we will never know. Just like we don't know if Seles would have continued to dominate the women's tour if she hadn't been stabbed.
