      Very true. However, her passion for competing and travelling for competitions started to wane as early as 93/94, and Gaby revealed this herself. Because as she retired suddenly in 96, people assume her passion waned that year or 95. But it was earlier. It's frustrating as she was so naturally talented and could have competed even into the early 2000s as she was talented and into fitness, but it was about passion and drive. At least Gaby Sabatini made her decision and a firm one with no regrets. Plus 11 years on tour was good enough. We were blessed with 11 years of Sabatini on tour!

      She should have won more and I mean a lot more, but I think her main weakness was that she genuinely liked everyone on the women’s tour. She was popular among the players for a reason.

    Such a clever match from Gabi. Pretty much slow balling Steffi here with big loopy topspin and floating slice, pushing Steffi back and giving her nothing to bite on. Gabi then mixing it up with some great net play. As for Steffi, she said that she had a huge attack of nerves before this match and she was so devastated by the loss that she didn't leave her hotel room for several days.

    • @moviefan4life166

      On this day, Gaby moved incredibly well, made hardly any errors and as you say, her low biting backhand slice and heavy forehand topspin were hit so well with such depth and Gaby also approached and volleyed brilliantly and passed with perfection on both sides. That one topspin backhand lob and those 4 or 5 bcrosscourt forehand dipping passers snd of course the several really hard, down the line drive backhands were something else. They played so many times in slams, but I’ve never seen Gaby play with such conviction and confidence as in this match. She always played Steffi so well at the us open though. Her losses in 88, 89, 93 and 95 to Steffi were all very high quality. If they met at the French between 90-93, Gaby could have picked up another win, but Monica had other plans!

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@moviefan4life166 There are some really odd quirks in their rivalry. One is that Gabi never beat Steffi on red clay, but had a fantastic record against her on green clay. Also, Gabi only ever beat Steffi once outside the USA (Tokyo 1991) and 8 of Gabi's 11 wins came in Florida.

      @@moviefan4life166 Monica only prevented one possible Graf-Sabatini meeting at the French, in 92. In 91 Gaby lost to Monica, but only after Graf was blown out in one of her most terrible performances ever by Sanchez Vicario in the 1st semi. Max. Very very true point. And she lost 2 to Sanchez Vicario in 94 which was peak Sanchez Vicario who won both slams she beat Gaby in, and one to MaryJoe in Australia in 92 and I believe she actually lost 3 to Seles (2 French and 1 AO). None of the players she lost to in the semis were weak for sure. All but MJ, were probably either 1 or 2 in the world or Martina on grass or Evert on clay which is the ultimate test. I’d say her biggest miss was Wimbledon 91, just two tiny points away on her serve and probably the French open 92 when she was the best in the world on clay and led Seles 4-2 in the 3rd set. She also played very subpar against MJ in Australia after beating her easily two weeks prior. Looking back the 87 French open loss to Steffi 7-5 in the third was probably a defining result as neither had won a slam and had Gaby won that match and the final, it could very well have changed the dynamics as Steffi went on an absolute tear after that and it took Gaby 3 years to win a slam.

      @moviefan4life166 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I agree. Gaby took all of Steffi’s weapons away playing like this. She knew exactly what her game plan was and executed it perfectly.
      When Gaby was committed to attacking the net, she was very very hard to beat on a quick hard court. The us open was her best major by far. A win, a final losing to Graf in 3 in Steffi’s golden year, and a bunch of highly competitive semis vs Steffi. She should have made a number of finals in Paris too, but the players who defeated her were usually Steffi, Monica or Evert and what can you do!

    So glad Gaby won this one, would have been a big injustice for her to retire slamless, just ended up playing in such a tough period, the final years of Navratilova/Evert domination only for Graf/Seles to take control after.

  • @zeddeka

    Looking at the match again, you can see that Gabi is well aware of Steffi's patterns and where she's likely to hit the ball. By contrast, Steffi doesn't seem aware of Gabi's. It was well known for example that Gabi's forehand passing shots usually went cross court and yet you see Steffi leaving that side open time after time.

    We don't associate Gaby with an excellent volleyer, but she actually was. I suppose she was the best volleyer after Martina Navratilova. Graf is powerful and Gaby is skillful. It doesn't happen very often that skill beats power. It's a pity Gaby didn't come to the net as she did in this match. She could have beaten Graf and other players many times more.

    • @andyray6324
      @andyray6324 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Everyone associate Gaby with an excellent volleyer. She was the 3d best vollyer after Martina and Jana Novotna. She came enough to the net to beat Graf more than any other player in history (11 times) Including 5 times in a row (between 91-92)

    • @kazuakigabychan8147
      @kazuakigabychan8147 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@andyray6324 , Yes, indeed! I should not forget about Jana Novotna. May she rest in peace! I must say Martina and Jana had great serve, but not Gaby. Therefore, she had to entirely rely on her volleying ability alone, rather than strong serve or ground strokes. She was a poetry in motion. I suppose after the loss in the Wimbledon final in 1991, I don't think she came to the net as much as she used to, Graf came to resurface after Monica's stabbing, but not Gaby. Graf took advantage of Monica's absence.

    • @kazuakigabychan8147

      @Max E , I don't want any tennis lesson from you, thanks! Graf and Gaby are like Naomi Osaka and Ashley Barty. Power again skills.

    • @tobiaskluke7094
      @tobiaskluke7094 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      … actually, she beat Stefanie 5 times in a row in the following months with her “new” game that included more volleys. Since Graf had to defend a lot of points in 1991 (she had won every tournament she played in 1990 until Berlin in May) and lost a series of matches against Gaby in tournamentzs where she was defending champion, that was the reason Monica became No. 1 so soon (and of course, because Monica herself won so much in that period). This is why Gaby even was a slight favourite in the Wimbledon 1991 final which she only lost very closely. 8 of the victories of Gaby against Steffi were in the period between the US Open Final 1990 and Amelia Island 1992. After that, she never won another match against Steffi.

      @@tobiaskluke7094 , Thank you for your running commentary. Yes, I was watching Wimbledon 1991. Gaby could have won it easily, but lost to Graf in the end. The similar thing happened to Novotna in Wimbledon 1993. I don't know if Graf was lucky or both Gaby and Novotna were nervous. Maybe both. I think for Jana, she was really nervous. I'm glad she won the title some years later. May she rest in peace.

    Steffi was less consistent in 1990. Gabriela, who always had the game to disrupt Steffi's sliced backhand played a lot more towards the net and revealed Steffi's weaknesses. Steffi could not hold the shock here. Gabriela was so much solid. If Steffi could have used more topspin backhands down the line maybe the score would have been different.

    • @alexsdb9712

      It was either two things: Steffi felt she was simply the better player and most of all, far ahead in mental toughness, so she expected to defeat Gaby. The other factor was that it was always difficult playing her dear friend and doubles partner, Gaby Sabatini, and either a win or loss would have been difficult for Steffi to face.

Way back then, I always laughed at guys fawning over her, to me it was so obvious she was gay... Not sure at what age she came out, but publicly, it was learned way after her career. I think that had she lived in a more open and accepting world, she could've been her true self and probably, her tennis would've shown that confidence. Oh wel, still she had a decent career and made a lot of money...And last time I heard she was happy and in a loving relationship - I hope that's true.

      ya ok LOLOL..Seles was stabbed 6/10 of an inch deep..it was just a superficial flesh wound..good lord, do your homework before crying murder..Seles just sucked under pressure, mostly Wimbledon where she always choked under pressure

      Obviously, u know nothing about tennis or life. Had she not been stabbed by someone like u. ( maybe u did it). She would have had 14 grand slams or more.

      You're missing the major point. It was part of Gabi's strategy - she wanted to slow things down. She knew Steffi loved nothing better than hard, flat groundstrokes coming at her. So she put plenty of air in the ball, pushing Steffi back with high topspin balls or floating slice and waited for her opportunity to attack. She nullified steffi's strengths very well here. Intelligent tennis players know it isn't just about hitting the ball as fast and as hard as you can - taking all the pace off can often ruin your opponent's game.

      Yes, that's true. I think Gaby depended on her skills rather than her power. Gaby's beautiful to watch, but I wish she had shown more power and meanness and hunger like Graf and Monica, but being a nice lady like Gaby, I suppose she could not do it.

      Vechris. Your comments are rude and ignorant. You know nothing of the sport. The athleticism and variety of shotmaking shown in this match is incredible. Gaby’s stab volley in the tiebreak was out of this world. It’s like Federer, Gaby and Steffi were pure poetry on a tennis court. And Steffi has the best forehand ever in women’s tennis and Gaby has arguably the best one handed backhand of all time. Her drive down the line backhands were second to none.

    Sabatini to me seems to be overrated. I’m not that familiar with her but based on this match it seems she’s just more of a pusher esque schiavone. Nothing exciting. I see why she didn’t win another. I will say however, she is absolutely beautiful. More so than Sharapova or Kournikova to me

      She is not overrated. She just didn't have the mental strength to challenge top player at the highest level even though she was the more talented

      I followed the 90s era and she really isn't overrated. However, you can't compare her with the new generation of power machines of the last 20 years. Today's game is somewhere else, thanks to different materials and surfaces. Back then, she was very exciting to watch and able of upsets against the best but she was not that as consistent as them, for some reason.

      @@patriktoby9723totally agree, you can’t compare. My comment was from a few years back and admittedly pretty misguided. You can’t compare eras, it’s tennis evolution and each era leads to the other. Sabatini is special for sure

      You might laugh at this ... but one of the main reason she didn't win as much as the others (Navratilova Graf Seles etc.) because she was extremely shy (!) to the point that she was almost terrified to have the obligation to give victory speeches, and this phobia/paranoia often blocked her on the court. You know where she won a lot ? In Rome (Italy), 4 times in 5 years. Because over there she was loved and admired by the italian public, they were all cheering for her so she felt relaxed and at ease, like being home.
