  • DAVE KNOWS that Aesthetic Distance is not a term that gets used all that much in wrestling and in general. However perhaps in should. Kayfabe and Pro Wrestling like other forms of performance, are all about the relationship between the performer and the audience. This nature needs to be explored better for wrestling, especially since wrestling does have some unique characteristics that make it different from other performances, but also give it some advantages as a result. So let's explore Aesthetic Distance, a term that we should think about and how it should be used, since not everyone would agree.

This was insightful because it put my problem with modern wrestling into a concept. Wrestlers working the crowd often dilutes the match for me. It feels like I'm now forced to just watch the ring ability of the performers, and that withdrawals the immersion effect of the match. I noticed that seasoned WWE vets do not work the crowd at all or very minimally

It's simply what you believe wrestling's core is, if you believe emotion is the core distancing the crowd is bad but if character is the core distancing the crowd is good. There are pros and cons to both. If you focus on emotion as your core you have lighter bumps and a more fired up crowd but you'll also have the possibility of your heels getting attacked and you'll have to stay closer to reality.if character is your focus you'll have more outlandish storylines and characters but you'll also have harder bumps and unintentioned reactions to characters

This is really interesting and I had never heard of aesthetic distancing before. Just out of curiosity, would a work/shoot promo (e.g. Mick Foley's "Cane Dewey" or "I gave you Cactus Jack" promos, or Triple H's " I am the game, JR" promo) be considered another example of this; I'm not sure if I fully understand the concept so I think they are but I'm not sure. As always great stuff Dave.

This makes me think of stories that guys like Freddie Blassie and even guys after him, from the 70's and even 80's of fans attacking them,. Drinks thrown in your face, people trying to snuff cigars out on you, needing armed guards to get you back to your car or a police escort to the freeway so they could get away. In those days, you lived in Kayfabe, to protect the business.
So, as Al Snow says, people as a whole have known wrestling is a work since the 30's. Yet, some fans become so emotional they attacked a heel, because they truly believed he had beaten up their favorite wrestler. Conversely, back in the early 80's in New Orleans, The Junkyard Dog was OVER. Roddy Piper told a story about how after getting beaten up for a while, he would turn to the crowd and say "HELP ME!" and they would start his chant. "Who dat sayin' they gonna beat that dog? Who gon 'beat that dog?" (Supposedly this was the where the "Who Dat" stuff came from when the Saints went to the superbowl years back) Many of them felt that they were helping JYD "hulk up" and win the match.

Holy crap, you just described to me why I hate most entertainment. I’m always viewing it in the same way you describe the “distancing effect”. Due to my own personal life I’ve been conditioned to always see as many sides as possible on an issue so the good guys always seem grey to me and with most Hollywood stories if the good guy is grey it’s garbage.

Well, in my opinion you just described that line of Somebody just watching a Wrestling TV show vs Kayfabe and Angles that can Emotionally make an audience invest so much, they can litterally lose sense of Reality. And Ricky Morton in his prime would stretch his hand out to the audience while he was getting thrashed saying "Please Help me" and the crowd would lose their minds. Or Emotional angles such as.Daniel Bryan vs The Authority. Kofi Mania, The Von.Erichs versus the Freebirds or it could even be a just a great Wrestling Match like Steamboat vs Savage or Omega vs Jericho where the audience has gotten so invested they're Emotionally Spent when the match is over

When it was drummed into your head since you were 5 when you started watching"You Know This Is Fake Right You Know This Is Fake Right?" This was the only thing I ever dealt with. Apparently to hear the story the only reason Goldberg didn't really kill that guy was because all the gas station attendants jumped on him. I HATE when people break the 4th wall in tv shows and movies. Nothing takes me out of it and makes me lose interest more and faster.

Wrestling is alot similar to standup comedy. There are those that can adapt thru hostile situations like Richard Pryor. And those that can thrive thru it like a Bill Burr. Plenty of comedians make you question their morals and handful can either back it up or make it part of the show.
