    How do people feel about the whole “Kofi/John Morrison” spot where every year someone does something Uber athletic to keep from getting eliminated? I think it’s a bit overdone but it’s been done long enough that it’s kind of a staple now.

    • @DaveKnowsWrestling

      I think it's great, but just too specific to exceptionally talented individuals to count as a regular role

      @JustMister13
      I agree with you. It’s overdone and I think it’s a bit ridiculous at times.
      It’s like, okay, both feet have to hit the floor, but for some reason both feet can land on the barricade and your safe.
      I feel like that should count as an elimination.
      Same with that time Kofi did the pancake walk. Oh okay there’s a pancake on the floor so he’s not eliminated.
      So someone could just glue sponges to the bottom of their boots and never be eliminated cause, afterall, the sponge hit the floor not their feet.
      Most of them are pretty fun and creative and I do enjoy them, but they get too stupid sometimes.

    The comeback: Someone who was gone for an extended period of time (either by injury, firing or something else) and makes their return to WWE on a more regular basis at the Royal Rumble (Edge, John Cena, Triple H all come to mind).
    The One Shot Deal: When a WWE alumni or legend shows up at the Rumble match for a clear "One Shot Deal" as they quickly leave WWE again upon finishing their Rumble appearance (Roddy Piper and Jimmy Snuka in 2008, Bella Twins i. 2018, etc)

    The Royal Rumble has always been WWE's Generational Time capsule . You can tell what wwe is right now by the royal rumble and probably see the future of wwe in that match. But one spot that you see every other royal rumble is when two competitors do a stare down but it's from a great rivalry or angle and the people go nuts(ex: The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels vs Marty Jannetty ,a year after their break up angle or most recently Mickie James vs The returning Trish Stratus at the Women's Royal rumble, cause people cheered loudly when they did a stare down and both did a mutual smile)

      Aren’t they inconsistent on self-elimination? Sometimes, a guy that does this is ruled out. Other times, he’s allowed to continue because it wasn’t instigated by a competitor. Or maybe I’m thinking of a non-Royal Rumble battle royal.

    I always appreciate the combo of the Arch Rivals and the gate keeper roles. Two guys fighting each other when all a sudden someone else comes out just to instantly be eliminated so the other two can keep fighting. Good example would be Taker and Shawn when they were 1 and 2

    In terms of surprise entrant "older wrestlers", nothing, to me, beats Dick Murdoch in the 1995 Royal Rumble. Not only did he last more then a few seconds, IIRC, he made it down to the final 6-7 in the ring before Henry Godwinn eliminated him.

    I would argue Taz was the best example of The Chump.
    I mean seriously. After the countdown his theme song hits. Taz runs to the ring hyped and ready to fuck someone’s shit. The crowd is roaring as this over guy from ECW enters the ring. And then Kane immidiately eliminates him seconds after he enters the rumble. Finally his theme song plays him out.
    There is a reason why OSW love to reference this spot.

    Great video Dave. I think another more recent archetype is “The Escape Artist.” That’s the wrestler who always finds innovative ways to avoid elimination. Morrison was the 1st I remember to make this a thing, but Kofi really claimed it as his signature spot for the men, while Naomi and Kacy Catanzano have both done for the women.

    • @DaveKnowsWrestling
      @DaveKnowsWrestling  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are quite a few escape artists for sure. I did think about it myself.. I was just gonna call it the Kofi. But in the end, all of the categories here were things that anyone can do. Which is why I tried to specify that even though some of these sound like Big Man roles only, there are examples of other ppl doing it. For me, Kofi and Morrison are the only shinning beacons of this category. And they are unique in that their talents allow them to do what others can't

    Hidden Dragons are the smartest guys in the Royal Rumble. They make everyone (from all faces to some heels), look really dumb. I remember how intelligent Nunzio was just chilling near the ring in 2004 before Cena put a stop to that! Also, what about the "Greatest Hits", where similar to Surprise Entrants, a full-time guy wrecks havoc like a House Cleaner, but are eliminated early (not before eliminating a guy or two though). Examples could include all women competing in the Men's Rumble, Booker T in 2002, The Brian Kendrick in 2009, MVP in 2010, to a more recent example of Chelsea Green and Liv Morgan eliminating someone in 2020, and not even lasting a minute in the Rumble.

    What about "the punching bag"? Road Dogg in 2000 is an example. He's beat up, lying under the bottom rope and holding onto it. Every new entrant comes in and stomps on him, and then seems to lose interest. So he stays in for a while, but not at all as the "iron man" archetype. I think Jake had a Rumble like this once, too.

    While the Royal Rumble had some great mob justice moments, my favorite instance of this isn’t in this type of match. The best mob justice example ever was the SNME battle royal ahead of WMIII. Andre the Giant attacked Hulk Hogan from behind and easily tossed him out. He was also the house cleaner in this event which included the famous Lanny Poffo blade job. He was so ferocious that the eight remaining guys, faces and heels, realized they had to unite to get Andre out.

    This year's mob justice: Rhea Ripley & co. went after Alexa Bliss like she was Andre the Giant.

    I would respect the royal rumble if wwe took the reward more seriously i.e. main eventing wrestlemania for the world title. And I meant post wrestlemania 21

    Everytime someone wins as #1 or #2, #1 or #2 are eliminated last. Only one that doesn't count is chris benoit, but that doesn't count

    Which Rumble was it where Heath Slater kept getting beat up before he could get to the ring? 😂😂
    Say what you will about him, Slater was one of the all time great Chumps.

    How about the "Already eliminated" role. When a wrestler is eliminated and gets back into the ring to eliminate the person that got them. Or in some way cause the wrestler to get eliminated. Kurt Angle and Shawn Michael. Kane and Daniel Bryan.

    • @DaveKnowsWrestling
      @DaveKnowsWrestling  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah the sore loser... that is another common role
