@FrameVoyager you summed it up perfectly. Pretty much 😂 honestly, you could kinda tell he'd do dune well after how he approached Blade Runner 2049. Respects the source material and still adds his own element to it. That's not in any way an easy thing to do
@Razor_Crest Yeah, most of those cases you have to change the angle though, shift the goalpost a little. "It's impossible for people to fly under their own power" != "It's impossible for people to fly" "It's impossible to shoot Dune faithfully to the book" != "It's impossible to shoot Dune faithfully to the book's themes and tone" (which is what Villeneuve ultimately did)
@Razor_Crest Idk. Denis said about first dune that there will not be a directors cut because everything that ended on the cutting room floor belongs there. And I kinda implicitly trust his judgement in that. Yes I have pretty good knowledge about the whole saga, but I quite frankly don't know enough about filmmaking to make that call.
100% the opinion of denis and christopher. When I stream a movie the value of a movie is instantly lowered just by the fact that watching a movie isn't anymore an event. Going to the cinema is an event for what you take time and plan your visit. I will remember watching interstellar first time in the theater. Going into the movie with just a vague idea about what it will be. Then experiencing that movie not spoiled by trailers and distractions made it alot more immersive. The soundtrack literally shaking the ground on the planet with those hughe tidel waves will forever be etched into my brain and will always be in my top best movie visits. The same with Dune Part 1 and 2. I've watched both in the best possible theteres twice.
That is so true! Although I can watch movies like Avatar at home whenever I want, I still remember the day I went to see it in IMAX on release week. I was 11 years old, 15 years ago, and I remember it. Streaming is great, but let movies be movies.
I think he did a great job translating the dialog from the book into the movie. The most important lines and themes were all hit, no filler. 10/10 movies both of them
Just saw it tonight at the imax in Seattle! And learned there that Frank was from Tacoma and went to UW. How cool to see the sequel on the largest screen in the PNW, in Frank's home state, in the aspect ratio intended by the production team. Thinking about watching it again tomorrow, so cool.
Appreciate it! Yeah, we try to get as much right as we possibly can. Don't always get everything right but we will adjust for the future on those things.
One of those great movies that deserves to watch it many times without getting bored . I didn’t feel the time of the movie . Until now; I watched two times; I will continue watching it again .
It's crazy that so many directors that don't care about the source material get in charge of directing epic stories, like Dragon Ball or even Star Wars... This is what happens when you put a deeply passionate director in charge!
I have the opportunity yo watch the two parts on IMAX just one week apart, amazing experience. Never thought it would be that exciting experience. Thanks to Villanueve for making this masterpiece.
I shot with a one off FullSpectrum version of the Red Raptor and man it makes for some crazy looks when in black and white. It actually can see through some types of clothing. Kinda bananas.
Pretty crazy! But cool to see it used in this film. Probably the more interesting use of a B&W look you could say since that seems to be a big trend these days
i’m lucky enough to have a 70mm imax theater where i live and i plan on seeing this movie there as many times as i can while i can. it was transformative in there
This movie is THE BEST SCI FI movie since 2010's INCEPTION. Personally Dune part 2 is my 2nd favourite sci fi movie of all time just behind Tarkovsky's STALKER.
I saw the film yesterday and am extremely sad. Im a college student rn and now that im back from spring break, the closest imax is over two hours away so i wont get to experience that again the same way. I genuinely feel heartbroken
Dune was my favorite movie of the year, absolutely incredible. First movie in forever that made me obsessed with something like i was lord of the rings
Of the decade? Maybe of all time. This is serious sci-fi for adults. No goofing around with silly little bots. No trying to appeal to kids or hoping to sell all the merchandise accompanying film. I think to compare this to anything in the Star Wars series is to put it down in a very closed-minded way. I am thrilled Hollywood stayed away from this and Part 1. They would royally have screwed it up.
Wow I was blown away from this movie when I saw it in Dolby. I’m ready to see it again but this time in IMAX! Thank you to everyone who made this movie so epic and stunning! Can’t wait for Dune 3!!
Many kudos to all involved in both parts of this Dune adaptation! I already saw it twice and got three friends to watch it also! I will go again... I wish at somepoint someday that I will be able to watch both parts at once in a theater.
With regards to the first one and streaming on Max; I saw the first 20 mins or so on Max but knew that it would be a disservice to finish it. Turned it off then bought movie tickets. Watching part 2 in theaters was just so mind blowing.
We did the same thing! Started the movie on HBO and then decided to turn it off and just drive to the theater. It was a life changing moment for me to see that movie in theaters.
17:20 This doesn't make sense, a computer can Key any color, the reason greenscreens are used, is that the color is far away from Skintones, so that skin doesn't end up accidentally keyed out. In dune they went for Brown background screens, to fix the spill light issue, however that probably came with a lot of manual rotoscoping. Inverting the color won't help here at all. Also the reason that the industry has mostly moved to greenscreen over bluescreen, is that digital cameras usually have more green subpixels than they have blue ones, meaning there is less noise in the green channel. (which makes it easier to key)
Great video! I really enjoyed this one. Very cool technical details, particularly enjoyed how they shot using different color choices. I love practical effects. I completely agree with Villenueve's view of dialogue in a film. I hate movies with a lot of dialogue. I feel that dialogue can restrict the user's own vision or understanding of a scene. Let us figure it out like we would in real life, through observation, rather than exposition. The audience can fill in the blanks; our imagination is the best story teller and too much dialog can rob us of a good story. And I, once again, enjoyed the filmconvert sponsor spot and peak into some of their cool features and how Frame Voyager uses them!
Thanks! Yeah, Denis Villeneuve really takes the time to let you breathe in the world he's building. Reminds me a lot of Avatar how James Cameron just lets shots linger for a while. But it's just an incredible film. Headed back tonight to see it again
@@Fowlzys I didn't like the shields in the movie. For example, harkonnen soldiers getting sniped at the top of a big-ass rock. Yes, I know shields attract worms, but they were getting killed left and right, and they were already on a huge rock, so I don't know why they didn't turn them on. I still enjoyed the heck out of the movie though.
@@CristanMeijerdid they have the ability to engage shields and just choose not to? Or were they literally not equipped. I’m kinda happy to leave technicalities at the door; that scene was cool as shit.
Agreed! I too recommend everyone see Dune Part 2 at least once on the big screen. The use of infrared in the shots of Geidi Prime perfectly simulated their ultraviolet sun. In fact, so many details were faithfully included in this fillm that I will probably see it again on the big screen; that way I can enjoy watching the details while already knowing the main action. There are some awesome reveals too that make you gasp, "Ahhh wow, no kidding?" others that make you think, "I knew it!" and at one point you will say out loud, "Oh crap!" I agree with your excitement, review, and explanations and hope that the third film (Messiah) will be made. In fact, it would be awesome if the franchise would turn into a six part big-screen series. But, I am getting way ahead of myself. 😊
Honestly, ever since the first Oculus VR googles came out I've been watching every movie on IMAX screen. Now I simply can't seat in front of of TV without thinking about how much better it would've looked in VR. The only downside is people really hate me in my house, it kinda kills movie watching camaraderie, but it does totally worth it.
it is so true, when i went to see dune part 1 in theaters i was blown away, it reminded me seeing my first movie "star wars episode one" it was a unique experience. Dune was able to recapture that feeling for me. I understand why he was upset, many people skipped out on that expeiernce. It's not just a movie to see. It was a movie you had to watch in a theater setting and i keep telling people that.
Damn what a treat to watch this breakdown of one of my favourite science fiction series. Thank you for the awesome content you continually put out for our edutainment 🙏
Fantastic that you didn’t minimise the contribution of vfx. I was seeing this film caught up in the recent “no vfx”/ all practical shtick. I’d say it’s great that practical is used to help the actors experience and provide excellent reference for vfx. I think it’s poor form to downplay how much vfx is used because it has been used poorly in the past.
Oh no, it's good to recognize both in my opinion. But yeah, to say they didn't add VFX in for the practical effects shots is ridiculous. The best part here is the VFX was excellent and no distracting.
Im so glad we at least got to see a bit of Jodorowski’s Dune. Denis has knocked it out of the park though. Just unreal stuff that will last generations. Herbert made a story more timeless than any other imo.
I haven't been out to the movie theater in long time.. But I went to see this.. I couldn't wait.. It was great, awesome.. I don't normally go to the movie's I just wait for on demand at home.. We cover that in this video in the cinematography section. For monochrome or ir cameras. But the arena itself was likely CGI. I don't think a miniature would make a lot of sense but it could have been that.
I don't think I've ever had a more swift response. Cheers for that, I will check it out right after I finish this video! Loving it so far! @@FrameVoyager 🔥
To fans of the book I imagine its the same feeling LOTR fans felt when the Peter Jackson trilogy hit the theaters. Dune is as fundamental to Sci-fi as LOTR is to modern fantasy, and it deserves the amazing adaptation we finally got!
To be fair to HBO, you could buy one month of streaming for the price of one movie ticket. I have a theater in my basement, but watching Dune: Part Two in the theater was way more immersive. I would give money directly to movie companies if they would make crazy movies like this.
I loved it. But I really wish they removed some of the time used to show Paul "proving himself to the fremen" to allow space to sit and relax in some of the spaces. The movie was so high energy, even in the slow moments, the music would pick up and not let you feel like the first movie did. It was good but that pace and score made the movie monotone. 100% impact makes it feel like 0% impact.
I still think there's something missing in how they made the "sand screens" work. As the provided methodology, quite frankly, makes little to no sense at all. Yeah, sure, opposite of brown is a blue hue... But... To get there by just inverting the colors... You are making everything inverted, so the warm colored sets and all... Would be colder post invert as well. So you end up right where you started and just wasted a step to get an image that is no more easy to pull a key from as the original image. The whole point of a blue or green screen is to provide a backing that contrasts so much in hue that they can make that hue transparent and not touch anything else. Blue was chosen as it was the least grainy on film and on digital cameras, and green tends to be the most detailed channel. As digital cameras got better, cinematographers have preferred blue screens when possible because blue spill is less disagreeable if it gets to the subjects. As blue is in the sky and all. What I suspect is that rotowork and matte pulling with AI and other tools has become so much easier to do lately that all you need is an even solid background to do it convincingly. Any color can do. And then it makes sense to choose the sand colored screens. Because even when the roto and machine generated mattes falter on a pixel or two, you won't get a black or green or blue outline. It'll be the sand. What I am saying is that something got lost in the translation or they are doing us a bamboozle when saying that sand screens work just as well as a blue screen. Or... It's just me not getting what they get out of the process. But until corrected with clear evidence... I have high doubts on the official story.
Yeahhhhhh, it gets kinda hard to cover some of this because you know they're not sharing every trick they used. Mostly broad strokes but there are some other in depth articles on it and we could probably make another 20 minute video on it. Honestly, nowadays hard to trust anything BTS material they show. Better to take it with a grain of salt

"It's impossible for people to fly under their own power" != "It's impossible for people to fly"
"It's impossible to shoot Dune faithfully to the book" != "It's impossible to shoot Dune faithfully to the book's themes and tone" (which is what Villeneuve ultimately did)
@Razor_Crest Idk. Denis said about first dune that there will not be a directors cut because everything that ended on the cutting room floor belongs there. And I kinda implicitly trust his judgement in that.
Yes I have pretty good knowledge about the whole saga, but I quite frankly don't know enough about filmmaking to make that call.
It was a privilege to watch this movie in IMAX
It was awesome!
Man I had chills throughout the whole 2h 46min runtime! 😮
10/10 movies both of them
Agreed
Just saw it tonight at the imax in Seattle! And learned there that Frank was from Tacoma and went to UW. How cool to see the sequel on the largest screen in the PNW, in Frank's home state, in the aspect ratio intended by the production team. Thinking about watching it again tomorrow, so cool.
The SciFi Dune was actually pretty great considering the (lack of) budget... but this movie? This is Denis's masterpiece.
Of course!
Think I finally got Director Denis Villeneuve's name down 😅
Appreciate it! Yeah, we try to get as much right as we possibly can. Don't always get everything right but we will adjust for the future on those things.
Well done, we don't hear his name properly pronounced often.
@@thebendu33 I just got a bad clip of the director saying it for the last one or else it would have been right last time too 🥲
Yes, well done 👌
0:23 That moment brought a big smile on my face. This was the correct pronunciation, merci! Denis won't have to go back to Norway ever again
One of those great movies that deserves to watch it many times without getting bored .
I didn’t feel the time of the movie .
Until now; I watched two times; I will continue watching it again .
Very well done, every aspect of this video. You deserve subs.
Appreciate it!
I watched in one of those 12 IMAX theaters. It was blowing me away. Incredible.
to be fair, Denis is a fan boy. totally immersed, beautiful movie
A fanboy for sure, but not too much so he can't put his own spin on it. He respects the material but makes it work for the cinematic medium
I might have to go see it in IMAX again 😅😅😅
I've seen it 3 times in IMAX
I love that a lot of the fight scenes edited into this video are of the stunt doubles (who are OUTSTANDING, btw)
Just saw the film tonight and it was absolutely riveting and beautiful. Also: great video!
Saw it again last night! And appreciate it!
As a Canadian, I appreciate you saying his name correctly
It's been a journey to get there haha
I first experienced Denis Villeneuve watching the movie Incendies. Unforgettable to this day. His greatness is always on display.
After playing with it for a month I desperately wanna get a camera converted to Full Spectrum for some B&W photography. @@FrameVoyager
The only film I've seen in the theater 6 times.
Beat you by one...they extended the Dune showing..
i’m lucky enough to have a 70mm imax theater where i live and i plan on seeing this movie there as many times as i can while i can. it was transformative in there
This movie is THE BEST SCI FI movie since 2010's INCEPTION. Personally Dune part 2 is my 2nd favourite sci fi movie of all time just behind Tarkovsky's STALKER.
I'm more partial to Interstellar but I understand your point!
I was just admiring the title cards and the glowy text you used in this video and then you told me what software you used for it! Neat
😂😂😂 you're welcome. Now part of it I'm running through actual crt TV's that I own. So the old TV look is actually not an effect but real
I had the absolute pleasure to watch this movie on the biggest IMAX screen in the entire world with 38m x 22x. This was the best thing ever!!
I saw the film yesterday and am extremely sad. Im a college student rn and now that im back from spring break, the closest imax is over two hours away so i wont get to experience that again the same way. I genuinely feel heartbroken
Take a weekend or one day trip with friends and enjoy a once in a lifetime experiences again..
Dune 2 is sick. congratulations to all the hard work that went into it
always like your work on production stories, you give a considered view
Appreciate it!
Dune was my favorite movie of the year, absolutely incredible. First movie in forever that made me obsessed with something like i was lord of the rings
Amazing job explaining everything of the film I felt like I was really looking behind the curtin of the project. Great work! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Glad you enjoyed it!
For sure. To me this is more in line with interstellar, 2001 a space Odyssey, etc. More serious sci Fi
Theatrical was a much much better experience for me. Just the sound alone -- it's optimized for high quality equipment, almost noone has that at home.
Yeah sounds quality and immersion is always a massive part of why I like to go to IMAX.
@@MrsTruthTeller and I’m about to go see Dune 2 again but in imax! Haha
My sister worked as an vfx artist for dune 2
17:20 This doesn't make sense, a computer can Key any color, the reason greenscreens are used, is that the color is far away from Skintones, so that skin doesn't end up accidentally keyed out. In dune they went for Brown background screens, to fix the spill light issue, however that probably came with a lot of manual rotoscoping. Inverting the color won't help here at all.
Also the reason that the industry has mostly moved to greenscreen over bluescreen, is that digital cameras usually have more green subpixels than they have blue ones, meaning there is less noise in the green channel. (which makes it easier to key)
I GET TO SEE IT TOMORROW
Dumbledore kills Snape
Sorry for the spoilers
hahaha
@@Freelancer.Warzone DAMN YOU!!! I thought Kyle Ren kills Han Solo?
Part 2 was for sure better than part 1.
Still some weird writing decisions, but it's a good time overall.
Dune is a weird story so honestly impressed with him pulling it off even if there are some interesting decsions
I'm curious, what writing decisions did you consider weird?
First part had more static visuals(arrival of benijezuret, one lf the craziest scenes) and second part had more moving action visuals
I absolutely adore Dune part 2. Adore it.
From what I hear Hans Zimmer is already working on the music for Dune Messiah haha
@@FrameVoyager Woo hoo!
Awesome video, well done, you brought up some really cool behind the scenes topics. Could really tell you love what you're talking about.
This is my first time watching one of your videos, but it's really well made! Def gonna subscribe.
Appreciate it! Welcome to the channel!
It was my honour to like this video 👍
Appreciate it!
it is so true, when i went to see dune part 1 in theaters i was blown away, it reminded me seeing my first movie "star wars episode one" it was a unique experience. Dune was able to recapture that feeling for me. I understand why he was upset, many people skipped out on that expeiernce. It's not just a movie to see. It was a movie you had to watch in a theater setting and i keep telling people that.
May the maker bless everyone who worked on this masterpiece
1884 Dune actually is a good movie, I still love it
I bet! Must be some kind of visionary to make a film before cameras and the book was written!.
It was a glorifying mess of a science fiction movie..One of the jewel of Sci Fi
One of my favourite films ever, it's truly fantastic
not the ad segment having the same music as the deep rock galactic space station music lol. Rock and Stone brothers.
ROCK AND STONE 🤘
Damn what a treat to watch this breakdown of one of my favourite science fiction series. Thank you for the awesome content you continually put out for our edutainment 🙏
No problem! We have fun digging into all of this, so glad it's entertaining!
Love the use of Yehezkel Raz throughout this video, an amazing artist.
Very well done and executed. Thank you for all this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was very entertaining and detailed- thank you for your effort!
No problem!.
For me it's more comfortable that way.. I had to get up 4 times to pee.. Plus I miss hear thing's and need to rewind too.. I knew this wasn't going to be on demand for almost 2 months so I went this time..
This is an excellent explanation video. Great job and thank you!
So far you’re the TH-camr who’s pronouncing Villeneuve de best. Most TH-camrs say villenoove.
haha I had a french friend help me with it! Actually got it messed up in our video about Veilleneuve. Though I heard an "eh" or "ay" at the end when he said his name. I blame my boas towards spanish haha
@@FrameVoyager hahaha I watched your other video just after, where you say villenooveh and it was so funny 😆 I figured you were told how it’s pronounced after your last video 😝it’s litterally Denis Citynew in French
@unemilifleur I'm glad you thought it was funny. Some people acted like I disrespected the graves of their ancestors by adding the extra bit at the end of his name 😂
bro i didn’t even realize that Geidi Prime Scene was black and white when i saw it in theaters. It just made sense to me, i thought that the world just actually looks like that
Amazing video! If you don't mind some input, I appreciate what you're going for with the titles, but I simply cannot read most of them with all the effects you have on them.
Yeahhhh, this one I went a little too hard on 😅 got some real CRT TV's and have been trying to figure out the right balance with them
Just saw Dune Part 2, seeing it on a big screen was amazing, this is not the type of movie to see outside of theatre (IMAX was amazing)
It really is a movie you go to see in a Dolby or IMAX theater for sure!
first time i shed tears in a theatre
Definitely some chills
Awesome video! Saw Dune 2 in IMAX and it was stunning!
Appreciate it! And yeah, going back to see it a third time tomorrow
damn the trick with the invert is just awesome
Hey, great question. I have a question, do you know how they shot the Harkonnen arena scene, like was it VFX or did they actually build the arena ?
We cover that in this video in the cinematography section. For monochrome or ir cameras.
But the arena itself was likely CGI. I don't think a miniature would make a lot of sense but it could have been that.
Quite interesting that such a softening effect created by the 35 mm film has not yet been created by a digital computer software.
Well I think it's the organic component of it. imo AI will solve the film emulation problem in the near future.
It’s a similar thing to audio production I’d imagine. Digital emulation is very very close, but it seems impossible atm to get it to 100%
I would love to know how'd you guys do the VHS/Oldschool kind of image in here. Anyone?
Real CRT TV's actually 😉 Check out our recent community post to see the new one we got.
I don't think I've ever had a more swift response. Cheers for that, I will check it out right after I finish this video! Loving it so far! @@FrameVoyager 🔥
@@PL4Ymsc I keep an eye out for comments I like to respond too haha. We might do like a short or something on how we do it here sometime soon
To fans of the book I imagine its the same feeling LOTR fans felt when the Peter Jackson trilogy hit the theaters. Dune is as fundamental to Sci-fi as LOTR is to modern fantasy, and it deserves the amazing adaptation we finally got!
By far one of the best movies in the last few years!
I love this edit please make more
STILGAR
I like too much his acting; he was an important connector between different thoughts & ideas .
AS IT IS WRITTEN!
I hope this one gets the imax ratio on the physical release
They usually don't get like the full 1.43:1 release but they have the other version that you can tell in films like Oppenheimer or Interstellar
