Same here. To be able to experience such a visual epic on the big screen was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Wish I had the same chance with Annihilation and Dune 1 (Covid; I never got to see it on the big screen).
I missed Ready Player One on big screen and regret that. Did see Blade Runner. 2049 was actually even better on the second viewing. Denis gets subtlety, nuance, soft touch, caress, he's got a great attention to detail. As time goes On, I like him even more and his movies, too.

@@FrameVoyagerYou might be mishearing the pronunciation here through his accent, because it’s much different than yours. I appreciate your vid, but that detail disrupts the flow.
For me, as a French Canadian myself, it was the pronunciation of Villeneuve that was problematic. 😅 Not going to criticize, but inform, haha! He added an "é" or "ay" sound at the of his last name, which shouldn't be the case. The "eu" phoneme in the middle is unique to French, like "th" is to English, if you want. It's closer to "eh", but not quite; a little higher. So the closest I can come phonetically while writing it down for an English-speaking audiance is this : "De-nee Vil-nev". I tried it using Google Translate's Listen button and it's pretty close.
@@MrSmokinDragon OK, what, besides the concept, is interesting about Rendezvous with Rama? I love Clarke, 2001 is an outstanding novel, but let's not pretend RwR is an interesting novel.
I think he did say he will be doing Rendezvous with Rama after Dune, but I have no idea how long that will be considering I have heard that he is going to be making a movie for Dune Messiah and I hope he goes until the end of God Emperor.
I really love his pairing with Greg Fraiser for cinematography. I think he could be a bit better in the storytelling side of it but love his visuals for cinema.
I liked Arrival a lot, but when I saw Blade Runner 2049 I knew Villeneuve was a god tier director. Dune Part 2 had me hoping in the cinema that it was an hour longer. I was at the edge of my seat throughout the whole movie and kept hoping in my head "don't end yet". Last time I had a feeling like that was during The Fellowship of the Ring.
When Dune part 1 ended and the end credits started I was genuinely surprised even destabilized as I really thought we were still only around the half of the movie, and I mean time-wise. It could really have been much longer. Now I understand I'll feel the same with part 2.
Blade runner 2049 was not a commercial success but it culturally succeeds. You always see the Ryan Gosling dead stare on the I can fix you Scene up until now. And you can watch over and over again and still awe inspiring.
"Arrival"... A fitting title for his very 1st film in the Sci-Fi genre. Actually, as mentioned in this clip, he's more like the prodigal son coming back to his home roots (like the biblical parable lol)
This coming out a mere hours before the Dune Part2 review embargoes lifted is NO coincidence and the film is now sitting at a 97% positive on RottenTomatoes with an AVERAGE review score of 8.6/10 based on 115 reviews for reference the average review score of LOTR Return of the King is 8.7/10 on RT making Dune Part2 not only Villeneuve's highest rated film film on RT but one of the highest rated science fiction/fantasy films ever on Rotten Tomatoes just let that sink in.

I'm noticing that Frame Voyager is getting savaged in the comments over his mispronunciation of Villeneuve despite having made a very solid video. I'll give him credit for at least making an attempt at a correct pronunciation. At least he didn't call him "villanueva" like so many others on YT.
It looked like a cool video but it’s hard to get past the intro. I guess he’s going to say the name a lot and it’s going to be super distracting. I’ll maybe give it another try later but for now, I cannot watch further.
Appreciate it! Yeah, I have more of a English/Spanish background but we did research on it and in some cases Denis kind of adds an "eh" or an "ay" to his name. Was trying to say it more how he does instead of the traditional sense, but that appears to have backfired 😅 I will say, that might just be my English speaking interpretation of how it sounds when he ends on the "V". But I got it based on several videos of him saying it. My bad though, I'll just use the traditional French in the future
When watching blade runner 2049 at home, I recommend viewing the open matte version (basically IMAX), if you can. It’s probably the most beautiful movie I’ve ever seen.
A note on Dune: The one director who succeeded in adapting it before was John Harrison. David Lynch arguably failed even though he did end up delivering a movie. This lends credence to the claim this book has to be filmed as a series, Villeneuve just didn't sell his series to a tv station. But it still structurally is more of a tv series than a movie.
Great video! Really well put together. I really love these breakdowns and the buildup from the directors perspective as his career builds and tells a story of the decisions he made and how they were influenced by his past... Well done! You had my attention the entire time!
Just saw it yesterday as well. Christopher Nolan wasn't wrong when he said it was an the "Empire Strikes Back" of this decade. Almost reminds me of LOTR Two Towers
@K.C-2049It is killing me too, as a finnish f1-fan. It feels almot on purpose, since he could use "he" instead of the name in most sentances. Really annoying.
I'll never forget watching Blade Runner 2049 in the theater. I live in a medium sized town outside of America so I was surprised the movie was even screening in the first place. Turns out I caught it on the last day of its 1 week run. Just me and 2 other people in the theater. From that very first scene I was ABSORBED into the world. Denis and the whole production team did a flawless job. I remember the movie was kinda ignored for a while and then slowly people started realizing just how good it was. I'll always feel lucky I got to experience it the way Mr. Villenueve wanted his audience to do.
Villeneuve has become one of my favorite directors -- and straight up my _favorite_ sci fi film director -- in just a few years. Arrival was the first film of his I saw, and it was instantly one of my favorite sci-fi movies. As much as I love Star Wars and the like, their plots are pretty straightforward. I love DENSE films. And Arrival fulfilled that desire. Then Dune came out, and again, I thought "YES. THIS is the kind of sci-fi I want to see." Just as dense, just as expansive, just as visually breathtaking. Then, I just saw Dune Part 2 yesterday. I would put that film on the same shelf as LOTR. No joke. It is a MASTERPIECE. I'm pretty sure Villeneuve's sci-fi movies will be the only ones I ever rate 6 stars out of 5. I also love how you pointed out that Herbert was kind of upset that readers thought Paul is the hero. I have never heard before that he said that, but it makes perfect sense to me. From when I read the first book, I saw that it was probably going to be a tale of a Chosen One gone bad. A will-he-won't-he story, watching him walk the tightrope of dictator/god vs humble hero. When I saw the movies, I LOVED that I could tell that Villeneuve had picked up on that too, and was NOT portraying Paul as a straight Chosen One hero. It's brilliant.
Saw it last night and blew away my expectations of how it would be. Truly fantastic sci-fi. But yeah, Dune is not a typical story and people often get it wrong what it is trying to say. Also, if you want some more Dune content we are doing an entire video on the production timeline and some cool bts stuff on Dune here on Wednesday hopefully!
Yeah we unfortunately got the wrong interview take of him saying his name that added an "eh" or an "ay" to it. Turns out it was just a weird cut. We try and do it based on how the person says it in interviews and just got mixed up. Fixed the pronunciation in our next video on the production of Dune. My mistake!
Everyone already corrected you on his name..so I won't do it. But I just want to say that his sequence of hard and difficult drama films really gave him the emotional chops to do humane and deep sci-fi. His sci-fi is deep. With émotion and humanity.
I’ll never understand Villeneuve’s complications with BR2049 it’s a phenomenal film in my top 5 of all time. The studio messed things up a lot but he himself did an amazing job helming the project.
If this man ever made a Mass Effect adaptation I would completely lose my mind! That's one of my favourite game franchises ever with ME2 being my all-time favourite game. I wouldn't trust anyone more than Villeneuve to adapt it.
@@ParadoxalDream You never know, maybe he's a huge Mass Effect fan. I mean look at Jonathan Nolan, who would've thought that guy is a massive Fallout 3 guy? Now he's releasing his adaptation of the IP on Amazon Prime and it looks great.

I straight up have never been a fan of a director like I've been a fan of this guy. I love every movie I've seen from him. Blade Runner is probably my favorite movie of the decade. That said despite all the positive reviews I am a bit worried about dune 2. Because of the direction he took with Chani, her being the protagonist and against the prophecy. I wish he kept it a faithful adaptation. It's also apparently more of an action packed movie which is kinda new for him. And I wonder if it's because his movies are brilliant but under perform for being slower and longer. Even though that's part of what makes it so good.
@@poindextertunes I've loved every Villeneuve movie, so far, they've all been masterpieces. I personnaly still haven't seen Dune2. But I have noticed that most people that are disappointed are disappointed due to the changes with Chani. So that kinda confirms for me that I will also be disappointed with that. But outside of Chani and changes from the book that I might not like. I have no doubt it's a masterpiece of a movie. Just maybe not as good of an apdation as it could have been. And I'm 99% certain that's purely because some tards wrote "this is a white saviour" movie about the first one so they needed a strong women of color to be a bossgurl and go against the prophecy, be an "independent thinker" Which is dumb, because Chani is madly in love with Paul. The man she loves, fits perfectly in her people's messiah prophecy. She'd be the one that would most easily believe and support the prophecy. She'd be his most loyal and obsessed follower. Not the one that would stand up and question the prophecy. Think about it, men or women. When we are in love we tend to ignore all the red flags. But now .. Chani has to be "strong and independent." I get setting up Dune Messiah but they should have chosen another character to be the scepitcal one. It's really bad that it's Chani of all people.
@3choblast3r4He didnt make Chani the protagonist. He made it so its more clear that Paul is not a good guy. The reason he did this is because Frank Herbert was upset that people didn't get that message from the original book. Which is why he made Messiah in the first place. He in no way mad Chani the main character.
@Largentina. he says he made Chani the main protagonist in interviews. I've still not seen the second movie. But people will always love a sympathetic villain or boy turned evil dictator. The same way the joker wasn't supposed to be someone people idolized, but they still did. Not to mention Chani is the WORST possibke choice to oppose Paul. She's in love with him ffs. People are even more blind to red flags when they are in love. But she's just so special, strong and independent .. lol
I've been a fan ever since watching BLADERUNNER 2049 (I still regret not catching it in cinemas when it first came out). I hope he directs films based off Frank Herberts' other books outside of Dune (Hellstrom's Hive, The Dosadi Experiment, etc). Hell, maybe even delve into the horror genre as well. Either way, I'm on board with whatever he does next!
Beautiful video mate. Every film Denis has made has changed my life in a different way. Dune part 2 was a masterpiece, and I’m ecstatic for whatever he’ll make next.
I love Denis's pre-sci-fi era movies better, since I'm more interested in personal, intimate stories of human beings rather than in futuristic dystopia or universe/mega-cosmos scale stories. Anyway, I love both sides of his art.
@@FrameVoyager It was of course meant tounge-in-cheek. Now I see where you get it from. The first time he pronounced it would be the standard French way to pronounce it: ending on the v-sound, with the French "œ" sound much more open than the close "u" sound, like in English "blur" (minus the r) vs. "blue". The dangling "ə" at the end of the last example is probably due to actually over-pronouncing the word. But again, I wasn't trying to be mean, just being an ass ;).

I respect anyone who goes into the world of sci-fi cinema. Sci-fi is where the dreamers go. Villeneuve, in four science fiction films, can join the ranks of the best sci-fi directors of all time, names like Spielberg, Scott, Kubrick, Cameron, Nolan and Verheoven.

also I'm lookin forward to his adaptation of rendezvous with rama, it might not be for everyone since it's kinda heavy on the science part but I love that book
BR2049 was brilliant, don't forget the original was considered a box office flop as well. It pisses me off that the way it gets talked about suggests it failed because it was bad rather than the fact that audiences are mostly thick as shit
Oh I don't think it was bad, but I do think he was right about it being marketed a certain way. And even though blade runner is a classic, I'm not sure how large of a fanbase it had anyways.
Bro I don't ever comment on people's videos but I was shocked when you said The show does not have any a list actors. Miranda Otto had a starring role in all 3 LOTR movies. I agreed with most of what you said and I kept in mind that these were first time directors. I felt they did well with what they had, I gave them a pass when it came to tropes.
In the past, cinema was about many things, but not being slow, souless and boring. Today, it's fashion. Speak very low, take the pose the face very serious, with very polished cinematography. People made it "quality cinema". Instead, wash your face, drink water and rewatch films from 50's, 60's, 80's and 70's. Then come back to actual cinema: you will be stunned how much actual films are empty. Just compare, you'll see. Some would say: "You old man, you don''t understand, blah blah". Yes I do. And you will, if you truly forget about what you WANT to like, and go to the films truly great.
I feel like this is a recency bias issue though. As time goes on, we only remember the great films of the past but at the same time, each era had their soulless cinema and movies that were truly awful. There are films I love from each era and I watch all over the place. Sure, we're in a strange era of cinema, but there are still plenty of excellent films coming out each year. And as far as films being slow today... I mean. 2001: A Space Odyssey is slow, the first Star Trek film is super slow, gone with the wind is slow, countless other films were slow in all of those decades you mentioned. There were all sorts of film styles. I've researched many films from each decade, and while I don't find every movie I watch today to be meaningful, there are plenty that have changed me and have challenged me. Maybe it's a perspective thing or maybe it's just we have different life experiences. There is value in every generation of art and to me there is still plenty of value in the art being made today. Not everything, but certainly not nothing.
So glad Ridley left the Blade Runner sequel and Denis directed it instead, because the Alien movie SUCKED, and Blade Runner was a masterpiece. Ridley would've butchered the BR sequel too if he had directed it.
How can someone like Denis worry about losing work because of blade runner 2049? Then you get the writer of madame Webb and morbius who keeps getting work and keeps making flops?

You know I'm an avid follower of this channel, but let me say this: I think you're going too hard on film emulation (grain, halation, etc) when editing your later videos. It's getting to a point where they're starting to look a little bad, even low resolution. I'd rather have you leave the film footage "as is", despite not blending that well with BTS and interview footage. Just my two cents! What bothers me most is definitely the distracting heavy grain
I get it! Trying to find the balance on that. Some of that also might be with what we tried doing with the subtitles in this which we use a halation effect on. I might try and localize that a bit in future videos so it's just around the text. Try not to use the grain unless it's on like photos or video that's already pretty low quality if we can source anything better. Sometimes the grain smoothes out the digital artifacts. Well acted, great visuals and not one blatantly obvious woke trope.😁 I am reinvigorated with hope that the art of storytelling is still alive. Villeneuve:
- Ville as in margaritaville
- nuh
- ve as in could’ve
For sure! Unfortunately, saw this video while researching the name th-cam.com/video/PEGsFvbDmEw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-_mQleedUBYap831
The last half he annunciates the "eh" or "ay" which I went with for the video. Might have just mistook the overunciation of the "v" here so in the future I'll just go the traditional pronunciation. My bad!
@@FrameVoyager He's saying "My name is Denis Villeneuve, AND..." which he produced like saying the letter N.
Source: th-cam.com/video/wCYRAH0jQH4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ryUmxt3WpPX--ovU
The other 3 clips in the compilation are correct.
Also, instead of pronouncing the "neuve" as "noov", maybe try saying "nerve" but soften the R even more than an English accent would. If that doesn't work, then "nuhv" is fine.
@@FrameVoyagerYou might be mishearing the pronunciation here through his accent, because it’s much different than yours. I appreciate your vid, but that detail disrupts the flow.
@@bookdmb Yeah, that's my bad. Worked with a friend who is from France on the correct pronunciation for our next video.
He is the Kwisatz Haderach of Sci-Fi. It is the legend.

Best director of our time. Sicario. Prisoners. The Arrival. Blade runner 2049. Dune.
I really love his pairing with Greg Fraiser for cinematography. I think he could be a bit better in the storytelling side of it but love his visuals for cinema.
You should watch Incendie if you’re able to find it somehow
I agree 💯%. Finally everyone else sees it!

2049 is the greatest cinematic experience I've ever had. Seeing that in 3D blew my mind in a way no other film ever has, by a long shot.
it was shown in 3d? was it better than seeing dune for you
Blade Runner 2 was a heartwarming experience in the theatre
@@frawgeatfrawgworldYes, 2049 and Dune both had excellent 3D conversions. I prefer 2049 but Dune also looks awesome in stereo.
you lucky sob
I liked Arrival a lot, but when I saw Blade Runner 2049 I knew Villeneuve was a god tier director.
Dune Part 2 had me hoping in the cinema that it was an hour longer. I was at the edge of my seat throughout the whole movie and kept hoping in my head "don't end yet". Last time I had a feeling like that was during The Fellowship of the Ring.
Same, I wish the movie was 5 hours long
Have you seen his other films? The not scifi? Even those are amazing. Like prisoners and sicario
@@Puppy_Puppington yep! All great films.
@@Puppy_Puppington I saw Prisoners long ago and really liked it. I've heard a lot of good about Sicario, it's on my "to watch" list.
When Dune part 1 ended and the end credits started I was genuinely surprised even destabilized as I really thought we were still only around the half of the movie, and I mean time-wise. It could really have been much longer. Now I understand I'll feel the same with part 2.

Prodigal Son is a pejorative term.
The most exciting part about any video on Denis Villeneuve is how are they going to butcher his name 😂😂😂

Glad you got the "prodigal son" bit. Some people getting hung up on the "Villeneuve's not wasteful" part of that story 😂
scario and blade runner 2049 was like so good i dont even know why its so good. its like slow and fast pace at the same time its really weird...
it's the tension he builds with each scene
This coming out a mere hours before the Dune Part2 review embargoes lifted is NO coincidence and the film is now sitting at a 97% positive on RottenTomatoes with an AVERAGE review score of 8.6/10 based on 115 reviews for reference the average review score of LOTR Return of the King is 8.7/10 on RT making Dune Part2 not only Villeneuve's highest rated film film on RT but one of the highest rated science fiction/fantasy films ever on Rotten Tomatoes just let that sink in.

Yes: MASS EFFECT (I hope)!
Doubt it. Can't even make one film that makes sense
@@N8oRMusicfor you. Don't think that you're the center of the Universe, it'd be a mistake. If you want to see movies that make sense, you have documentaries (although nowadays it's questionable) or computer tutorials on TH-cam - even though many don't make sense.
I still regret that I didn't have the chance to see Blade Runner 2049 in Cinemas. I hope one day there's a re-run I can get to.
Incendies is one of the greatest films ever made, and possibly his best. The final 20 minutes are absolutely jaw dropping. I was speechless.
It's pretty crazy! It honestly is so fascinating to see him jump from those film into science fiction films the way he has.
Was trying to say it more how he does instead of the traditional sense, but that appears to have backfired 😅
I will say, that might just be my English speaking interpretation of how it sounds when he ends on the "V".
"Ville New Vay" is an interesting way to pronounce his name.
Arrival has always been one of my favorite movies
DUNE Part 2 is the best Sci-Fi film in the last 25 years
I still like Blade Runner 2049 better, but it's telling they're both from the same guy.

I saw Dune 1.2 yesterday via the Fan First Premieres in IMAX. It's spectacular and makes the 2⅓ year wait since Dune 1.1 so worth it!
Just saw it yesterday as well. Christopher Nolan wasn't wrong when he said it was an the "Empire Strikes Back" of this decade. Almost reminds me of LOTR Two Towers
The name Villeneuve only has two syllables. The last ‘e’ is silent.❤

Incredible video. The quality and throughline are fantastic, great ending and tie in into his own story.

Pronunciation: Veel-Nuhv (from a Canadian who’s lived in Montreal)
He's name is French-Canadian. You don't pronouce the last e in Villeneuve. Sorry, this is drivng me crazy.
My mistake!
Sorry, you may wish to consider dialling back the passive aggression?
@@deepaknambisan3251 lmao passive aggressive! In what way is "my mistake" passive aggressive?
Everyone already corrected you on his name..so I won't do it. But I just want to say that his sequence of hard and difficult drama films really gave him the emotional chops to do humane and deep sci-fi. His sci-fi is deep. With émotion and humanity.
Agreed! It really was a stepping stone for him. And you can tell how much he learns through each subsequent film
I’ll never understand Villeneuve’s complications with BR2049 it’s a phenomenal film in my top 5 of all time. The studio messed things up a lot but he himself did an amazing job helming the project.

Dune 2 is a masterpiece
@@poindextertunes I've loved every Villeneuve movie, so far, they've all been masterpieces. I personnaly still haven't seen Dune2. But I have noticed that most people that are disappointed are disappointed due to the changes with Chani. So that kinda confirms for me that I will also be disappointed with that.
But outside of Chani and changes from the book that I might not like. I have no doubt it's a masterpiece of a movie. Just maybe not as good of an apdation as it could have been. And I'm 99% certain that's purely because some tards wrote "this is a white saviour" movie about the first one so they needed a strong women of color to be a bossgurl and go against the prophecy, be an "independent thinker"
Which is dumb, because Chani is madly in love with Paul.
But she's just so special, strong and independent .. lol
@@3choblast3r4 Can you show me one of those interviews where he said he made Chani the main character?
So funny how dudes just amazed he has a job so humble
I've been a fan ever since watching BLADERUNNER 2049 (I still regret not catching it in cinemas when it first came out). I hope he directs films based off Frank Herberts' other books outside of Dune (Hellstrom's Hive, The Dosadi Experiment, etc). Hell, maybe even delve into the horror genre as well. Either way, I'm on board with whatever he does next!
I bet it would be interesting to see what he can do with something like Dead Space.
Beautiful video mate.
Every film Denis has made has changed my life in a different way. Dune part 2 was a masterpiece, and I’m ecstatic for whatever he’ll make next.
He’s apparently working on a Cleopatra movie, that could be epic
I love Denis's pre-sci-fi era movies better, since I'm more interested in personal, intimate stories of human beings rather than in futuristic dystopia or universe/mega-cosmos scale stories. Anyway, I love both sides of his art.
Same! I think his storytelling is a bit weak but his visuals are 🤌
Really liked your video, just one minor gripe: Villeneuve is French (Canadian), not Spanish. To pronounce it like "villnuve" is just jarring. 😱
Appreciate it! I actually got that from how he said it himself on this video th-cam.com/video/PEGsFvbDmEw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=F-s3Z8PNrbztr0rm

Blade Runner 2049 is phenomenal. Wish there was more
Awesome video man!
Enemy not mentioned?
Yeah, Ridley Scott has had a fascinating career path. Almost feels like the next gladiator film needs to really do well

Great Video, but one complaint, I can't believe you never mentioned the film Denis Villeneuve directed after "Prisoners," "ENEMY" also with Jake Gyllenhaal, Melanie Laurent and Isabella Rossallini.!, A Great Film Again.🕷
Appreciate the feedback!

After being in a Hollywood woke trope driven cinematic desert. Who would have thought a sequel movie about a desert plant would be an oasis for escapism. This movie was amazing!!! Well acted, great visuals and not one blatantly obvious woke trope.😁 I am reinvigorated with hope that the art of storytelling is still alive.
If I could send a letter of thanks to Denis Villeneuve I would. He is an absolute example of an individual who still sees film making as an art and not a cash grab. After watching your episode I now see similarities to Denis Villeneuve and Miyamoto Musashi. Particularly Musashi lesson.
“For men who want to learn my strategy, this is the Way:
Do not think dishonestly.
The Way is in training.
Become acquainted with every art.
Know the Ways of all professions.
Distinguish between gain and loss in world matters.
Perceive those things which cannot be seen.
Pay attention even to trifles.
Do nothing useless.”
Great episode Sir, very educating. Because of your episode I see how Denis Villeneuve has correctly allowed each life experience shape him into the storyteller he is today. Thank you for this perspective.😁
