Surprisingly, it looks like the Samyang won this side-by-side comparison in almost every category.😲

Thanks for the review. One thing I kind of wonder about is how much of what we’re see in the comparison of these two lenses can be attributed to sample to sample variability. The only consistent theme I’ve noticed across the many reviews here on TH-cam is that is sounds like the Tamron is a bit better in a few aspects of autofocus. I happen to have the Samyang with one of the main reasons for my choice being that I’ve had great luck with Samyang lenses for astrophotography whereas my experience with Tamron has been mixed.

These two are very close. One thing he did not mention is the Warranty. Tamron 6 years, Samyang 1 year. Might be important to some people.

I already had/have the Tamron version and it's an amazing lens, except for the size and weight. But price for that unique zoom and fast glass. I have a few Samyang lenses and they're good but their AF is not as good as my others lenses. It's not a big difference, but it's noticeable. So I would likely have gone with the Tamron anyway for a premium zoom as these are.

I hope either manufacturer now would make a cheaper version. Remove all the fancy buttons, and make it f2.8-4 instead. That would be incredible for hobbyists and beginners.
That said, as a hobbyist, I'm now waiting for the Samyang to start appearing on the second hand market.

Buy the Tamron 28-200 2.8-5.6, that should do it for you. It closes very late to F5.6, so at 100mm you are at 4.5 I guess. Its one of thoses lenses I wouldnt sell any time.

Bought the Rokinon as I already had the Lens Station. At $1100 US (on sale) vs $1900 US for the Tamron I couldn't justify the additional $800. I love Tamron lenses and own quite a few of them but the one thing I like better on the Rokinon is that it has par focus meaning it stays in focus throughout the zoom once it has been locked on a subject. The Samyang/Rokinon was simply the better value. I find the AF to be snappy and accurate.

Thanks for this very informative and practical review. I especially appreciate hearing your findings about flare and AF on moving subjects, as other reviews to date have raised questions about these. One, in particular, reported pretty bad veiling flare with the Samyang pointed at bright light. I'm still looking for a comparison of C-AF and tracking IN LOW LIGHT, as this is where differences are most likely to become apparent. For event shooters, who often work in dim environments, this is important.

I made a mistake buying Samyang, had to send it back. Nevertheless, there are two things I liked about it. It performed very well at 35mm, very sharp. And bokeh is very smooth. Unfortunately, it goes downhill the longer you zoom. At 150mm it's just soft, even at the center. Flaky AF is not helping either. But what pushed me over the edge is terrible flaring of Samyang. The veiling is so strong at longer focal length it becomes impossible to shoot anywhere where there are strong back lights, even outside the frame.

Excellent review. I bought the Samyang and I love it. The only thing missing is a lens profile for Lightroom for optical corrections. Do you know if the Tamron lens profile provides good correction results to Samyang photos, given that they are very similar lenses? It would be a very useful piece of information.

I have the Tamron and have enjoyed it for 8 months. It’s great to have different options for this uncommon focal range now.
I have no regrets and if I had to choose again I would still go with the Tamron. The Tamron is heavy already so I would not want to add any weight to it. I currently use it on an a7iv and I use the peak design clutch grip. That really helps distribute the weight. I initially had it on an a7c with the small rig cage with the grip and that worked well also. Thanks for the comparison. Although I already own the Tamron, I like to watch videos to see what else I can learn about it.

@@CarlosTucker-sp4bj I would recommend the Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8. If you add up the price of the Tamron 70-180, plus a 35 and 85 f/1.8 then you have more than covered the price of the 35-150 and do not have to keep changing lenses. Although the 85mm f/1.8 lens is amazing.
Another option would be to go with a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. This lens is $899 new and $600 ish used. That is a popular wedding lens. Well, 24-70mm is but this is close.
But the best thing to do is to rent some lenses to see what focal lengths you will actually be needing. This will save you some money because buying the wrong lens will cost you because resale kind of sucks. Buy used if possible so if you need to sell, it won’t hurt as much financially. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I still wonder, how Samyang managed to build this lens as their second zoom lens. From many aspects, they seem to be identically (size, apterture values at focal lengh = 35 f2, 50 f2.2, 75 2.5) and just small things like the housing, buttons and their placement differentiat them.
So their are some reviews with firmware v1 from Samyang, that they their eye AF is inconcistent, their image quality is not as good as tamron and video AF is unuseable and lens creep is their.
I got the Samyang two days ago and weather wasnt great, but without having the Tamron to comparision, the Samyang seem to be a really good bang for the bucks. AF was on point every shot, it doenst feel premium as Sony and Sigma, but good enough and what you see through your viewfinder will immediatly amaze you. Its a bokeh zoom master at every range, something what a 24-70 couldnt deliver and you dont have to change to a tele every time. Beside of that, it should work great for sport because it should replace a 70-200 also. Not tested that yet.
