Unmasking Samyang 35-150mm: Tamron Clone or Master Thief?

- Full review with photo/video samples of Samyang 35-150mm f2/2.8 for Sony-E cameras. This is a second lens with this focal range for Sony-E and it is following in the footsteps of Tamron 35-150mm. It is bigger, heavier but significantly cheaper than Tamron. Is it as good though?

Great video! Thanks so much for taking the time to go so in-depth. We are still quite tempted, but possibly we need to wait to get the Tamron for the slightly lighter package and the slight improvement in IQ.
There is no hiding it, Tamron is a better lens overall. This is pretty close behind though and it is made for all those who can't stretch their budget to the price of Tamron or who are loyal to the Samyang brand.
Thanks for watching guys!
Damn Rokinon coming out swinging with this one. Beautiful work friend!
L-mount coming soon as well!
thanks dude
I felt those bloopers at the end haha
thanks for watching this far!
I shot an MMA event with it and it was absolutely incredible.
it is a decent lens for sure
Idk if you can answer this question, but I'm asking since you mentioned MMA, a high action sport. Does the AF keep up in video for fast action?
I bought my Samyang 35-150 in BH for a thousand dollars, already updated to version 2, and I have nothing to complain about, the auto focus for videos and photos are excellent on my Sony a7iv. The material is not bad, the problem with Tamron is that if you pay 2000 thousand dollars and sell it you will lose a lot of money.
I got the Samyang version for my A7RV and and I absolutely love it.
Nice!
Thank you for doing this. video
My pleasure! Thank you for watching
Thanks for the review. What I don't get is why people are complaining about the weight. What would be different from carrying a lens kit consisting of 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 for example, which together actually weigh more? Or shooting with a 70-200 f2.8 GM2 at only 200 g less? I used to shoot weddings (and not just me, that's certain) with a Canon 5D mk3 with battery grip on, 70-200 f2.8 and sometimes with a speedlight mounted on. Now that is heavy!
I agree. You just get used to it and get on with it
I'm used to spending hours with a broadcast video camera on my shoulder, when people complain about an extra 100g on a photo lens I get angry 🤣🤣
Man, I really hope that one/some of these manufacturers simply comes-out with an (updated) full-frame 24/35mm to 85mm F2, F2.8 or something.
I understand this 35 to 150 zoom range has its use, niche and market, but I am really hoping for something more compact these days 😢
there is an amazing Tamron 20-40mm. I have reviewed it awhile ago
@@PavSZ I don't really film vlog style anymore as I used to. These days it's more talking-head videos and just capturing moments of my loved ones while travelling, so I can make do with losing anything 24mm and below
I really wish there was a 28 to 85 or a 35 to 85 with decently wide aperture 😢 something that also works well when jumping into apsc mode for a 130mm equiv on the long end ~
dreams will be dreams though, haha 😂
@@x_jaydn but .... there is Tamron (again!) 28-75mm f2.8 (and Sigma as well).
I think you are overcomplicating it - there are lots of options to give you that focal range, or almost
@@PavSZ The almost is the part that's getting me 🥲
This lens is so tempting.
This and a Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD, , covering 20 to 150 mm.
If Samyang would make something around 20-40mm f/2.8, that would be such a cost saver.
I hope they will in the future
He Pav, great video. A little confusing at 2:52 though, because with respect to close focusing you are saying "at 35 mm it is 33cm and at 150mm it is 85mm. That would mean at 150mm it focuses 24.5 cm closer than at 35mm. I suspect you meant that at 150mm it focuses down to 85cm. Y/N?
As far as I know what I said it is right. When you fully zoom out (at 35mm) you subject has to be 33cm (from the sensor) for the lens to focus. When you fully zoom in (150mm), you will have to step back as your subject will have to be 85cm (cm, not mm as I said in the video) from the sensor.
Mistakes happen unfortunately
@@PavSZ Yes, I make lots of them. Just wanted to be clear. Cheers!
I’m here because I’m excited that it will most likely come to the L-Mount 🤩🤩🤩, perfect for events
We are all waiting for L-mount version
You guys waited a long time 🤣🤣 got mine on preorder 🤤🤤
I bought one and returned it, the focus was way off what it was supposed to be(I adjusted it with the dock) but then I found out that many images were fine in the center but the whole left side of the image was blurred, I'm thinking whether to buy another one and see if I get a good copy or pass on this lens.
I also bought this lens on preorder and this first lens whas not what I expected in terms of AF. Especially wide open. So I returned it. After that I bought another copy that was not one of the first copies and was bought from Germany not Romania like the first one. This second copy is really great also in terms of AF and IQ.
it's a shame that they can't have better quality control. These lenses are very good ... when they work
Pav SZ any info for Samyang 35-150mm for L mount soon?
not yet. I'm waiting for it too
£806 on Amazon UK at the moment, made my mind up ... Thank you
I hope you like it
It´s the equivalent of 24-105F4 crop with faster F-stop.... about time. Been using this focal length for ages on my crop bodies. Pair it with a 20mmF1.8, complete duo.
Yes!!
Just pre-ordered the l-mount version 🤗
cool!
Me too, will have to wait till the end of this month
Why hasn't everyone been dropping videos about this lens already?
There are other reviews of it out there .... I think
@@PavSZthere is essentially only you, Tom Calton and Arthur R
Three whole reviewers... Feels like Tamron pays to keep the Samyang a secret or something. Or Samyang is terrible at marketing and reaching out to reviewers.
Hey is expensive people have so much money 😮seriously is expensive especially if is hobby
@@Wistbacka there is no copies to try. I had to wait 3+ months to get my hands on it since it came out
@@ciclallisilva4441 it is very expensive hoppy
I have a copy and i love it
amazing lens
I've read some reviews by people who had the screws on the mount loosen over time and literally fall off their camera. The worst part is Samyang didn't stand by their products and stopped communicating with them altogether. Hopefully they've learned from it and fixed the problem. Buyers of used (older) copies beware.
BTW, are the Rokinon versions identical? For some reason I see they're slightly less expensive.
I have been told that this problem was only present with early versions of 24-70mm lens and they have already addressed the issue.
I think Rokinon is identical / same brand
I only came here to hear you mispronounce english words ;)
Joke - love your videos and bought the Sigma 16-28 recently after watching your review. Much appreciated :)
Ive been soooo close to buying the Tamron 35-150, but someone told me, just today, that Samyang has one just as good and cheaper. So now Im here on youtube, watching reviews again :)
yes, Samyang is a rock solid lens too
Do you hear that is available in L mount?
I do hear
@@PavSZ 😅😅😅 seems like a good option :) The E mount is available for 900 but the L mount ... i dont see any available. Thanks for your review.
What mount?
E-mount now (L-mount coming soon)
Got this for £920 Amazon Prime Deal ... amazing price. I bought a Zeiss 55 1.8 second hand with the money saved not buying the Tamron.
Nice ONE!
for the 4th time watching this video. Still confused which to buy. I will compare side by side after visiting camera shop here.
The best way is to feel them both. Samyang is bigger and heavier but it is cheaper.
I have reviewed the Tamron here as well if that helps
@@PavSZ I watched your both videos
@@Neil_Hasnat Which one you choose? and hows the quality and autofocus ?
@@jaipalreddy4894 I purchased sigma 24-70 f/2.8 DGDN Art 🙃😅
I hope its l mount
not yet but it's coming
I guess Tamron never will, but Samyang maybe could join the L MOUNT ALLIANCE and make this lens available there
Quite possible
Samyang joined in July.
Fingers crossed for it being available soon 🤞
@@JohnSonSilver27 it will be available in L-mount soon for sure
Aahhh no stabilisation
nope - not unusual for a standard zoom lens
I am here because i want to validate my purchase 😅
and? are you happy with it?
@@PavSZ if i am taking pictures with it yes, but if i am walking with it i feel like the mount is gonna break. One thing i do not like with samyang zoom lock is when you attached the lens hood in reverse it is hard to flick that switch.
멋진 리뷰야! 고마워!
no idea what you said but thank you
