I love changing it up, all the focal lengths from 24, 28, 40, 50, 85, etc and outstanding in their own way. For years I found my photos very stagnant because of using the same focal length. Every focal length allows a different way of telling a story as well as composing
Brenda...excellent job explaining the why 35mm is such a versatile focal length and its limitations. Concise, clean and conversational/didactic is what I enjoy about your presentation style. Keep up the great and you've earned yourselves a new subscribe. Cheers!
Brilliant, thank you, you have shown great photos as examples and refreshed my yearning for a 35mm prime! I have an Olympus 35mm f2 in my cupboard, it was my favorite lens in the OM film system, now I just need to get one for Canon.
I need some advice. My friend asked for help with a family portrait shoot, would the 35 be a good option or should I go with a 24 ? Thanks in advance!!
226 / 5.000 Hello, good morning, question: minute 3:39, the backlight is high, but in front of the couple, do you use it directly on the camera??? Or do you put them found one to the other? Thank you very much. You would help me with your answer. Greetings from Tijuana B.C. Mexico
Thanks for asking, this is actually a 4 light setup with a light just off each corner of the dance floor. No on camera flash, just a trigger. Hope that helps!
I haven't really found myself using my 35 as much as my 16 and 50 primes. I'm told it makes a great street photography lens, so that will be my test. I'll be doing some street photos this weekend and I will force myself to taking ONLY the 35 to see what I can come up with. I'm still learning composition, but I've always wanted to try street photography so maybe I'll be inspired by this lens! Thanks!
Nevertheless the 35 2.0 from Canon ist one of the most underrated lenses. Use it with love, espspecially combined with the 85 1.2 on weddings an more. Greets
Awesome video! you keep referring to 16-35 being heavier, if you had the GMii which is only 20g heavier than the 35mm GM, would you still choose to use the 35mm over the 16-35 gmii?
I've used the GMII and it is smaller/lighter. I like it a lot! I really like the versatility of the 16-35mm if you only have the $$ for one of them. Hope that helps!
Hi Randy, just remember that 35mm on a crop sensor camera like your Fuji, is actually equivalent to shooting a 50mm lens on a full frame camera. To get a more true 35mm wide perspective on your Fuji, you should try shooting with a 23mm lens. I love shooting 50mm, so the 35mm f2 was my go to on my Fuji.
I'm considering a 35mm prime. I have a Canon R8 and am using 50mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 lenses from my APSC DSLR. At the moment I have crop sensor kit lens and EF-S 10-18 as wider alternatives. The Canon EF 35mm f/1.8 looks like it would nicely fill a hole, being a full frame lens.
Thank you for your inspiration! May I ask you if it’s worth it to have a f1.4 lens compared to a f2.0? I would use it generally for isolation for kids-pictures to keep other kids unrecognizable as well as low light evening outdoor pictures. Therefor I am asking and I would be happy to hear a little bit about your opinion! Thx in advanced! Of course I can use a 50mm or 85mm but then I limit the view of the environment (negative space) I guess with 24mm f1.4 I would not get the isolation with depth of field… Best, Bernhard
Hi Bernhard, the difference between f1.4 and f2 is not a ton but might be enough to give you more blur. It’s more about the distance than the f-stop. Hope that helps!
Awesome review of the 35mm. I have a 35mm 1.8, but don't use it very often (mainly use the 85mm). After watching your review I will get a little more use out of my 35mm and practice some of your suggested techniques. Thanks
Very informative video! Am I weird to bring both 35mm and 135mm on my upcoming travel? I will be traveling to Asia and plan use 135mm for street photography since I am shy to get closer. I then use 35mm when I am with family and indoor. Or, should I leave 135mm at home and "crop" later if I bring just the 35mm?
I totally agree that zooming with your feet isn't always a solution. Yes, with enough room, you can fit the same amount of "stuff" in the image, but the perspective changes (i.e. the relationship between the subject and the background).
A 35mm Lens is "the holy grail" of Lenses, if you look back on old compact Cameras with fixed mounted Lenses, then they had 35, 38 or 40mm Lenses and for a very good reason, it is a focal Length that is easy to use for most people that not have much experience with photography. I love the 35mm focal length, When I go with one Lens only, then the 35mm is a high scoring favorite, I have two 35mm Lenses, the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical which is second to none in optical image quality ! The other one is the Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35mm 2.8 T* ZA which is so Light and compact, that you always can find space in a bag or pocket for it !
Good video! To me changing lenses in a quickly changing environment is a little crazy when both Tamron & Sigma have excellent 2.8 zoom lenses that cover roughly 25-75. ( lots of great stuff can be done now in post). I use my 35 strictly for street photography where I want to go unnoticed.
Brenda, superb video. The links that you shared titled "My choice for a Sony Full Frame 35mm lens" just links to the Amazon start page, for me. Is it possible that the url changed on Amazon's end? Also, I'm guessing it's the lens you were holding, the 35mm f/1.8?
The best 3 focal lengths and lenses are 20mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8, and 85mm f1.8. Why f1.8? These sizes are perfect for compact, lightweight, faster than zoom len f2.8, and cost less than f1.4. 35mm f1.8 is my main len for everything.
Not sure which one you’re talking about but it was likely by using off camera flash. Allows you to expose for both by adding light where you want it :)
Pretty cool video - very informative as well! It's nice getting a refresher, especially at this late an hour for me. 😊 Plus, I liked the multiple camera angle shots; it made for a dynamic presentation! 😎👌
35mm is great for travel photography. If you don't need super fast apertures, it's light and compact. It gets enough background, for context, which is key, for travel photography. Who wants their picture taken at the Eiffel Tower, when you can't see the tower?
Everyone talking about how they like 35mm because of size and weight while I walk around with my 1.4 sigma art 35mm which is as heavy as my 85mm and 70-300 together... 😂its kinda love or hate focal length tho , I personally love to use it for weddings/portraits/indoor stuff , and for some reason I hate how it looks when I shoot cars/landsapes . Its funny that I originally bought it for landscapes and I just don't bring it with me anymore when I go out , I just throw on 70-300 on and 85 in my bag (which I LOVE to use for sunsets and landscapes , everyone finds it weird for some reason like its only made for portraits) that way I don't have to worry about 1000$ lens and I have light bag .
@@vhs_goldstar the 24mm it seems to be a panoramique lens for landscaps... This is praticable But the 35 mm for portrait shots A dont like this so much

Its all about perspective!
Can I change the aperture with a fixed lens? Does not seem to change.
You should defnitely be able to change it. Some lenses have a manual aperture ring that must be adjusted or moved to the automatic position.

I mostly use my 35 f1.8 for astrophotography. But this will help with incorporating landscape story telling with people/portraits. Thanks for sharing
The 35 can be a fun lens for Astro, I usually like the 20mm. Hope you have fun with the storytelling 👍🏻

Man the Sony FE 35 1.8 is so underrated. It’s one of my favorite lenses. And it’s not super expensive!
Agreed! I've been meaning to test out the "knockoff" Samyang 35mm version to see how it compares, it's quite a bit cheaper.

FF, always full frame haha :)

I can only assume that all Imagen and references are for Full Frame cameras
What are the equivalent to APSC sensor cameras ? (1.6 crop factor)
I’d look at a 20 or 24mm lens on an APS-C camera. Hope that helps 👍🏻
Which full frame Sony do you use. Your link for the camera doesn’t show a camera. Thanks.
Thanks for letting me know, I use the Sony A7IV mainly: amzn.to/40EtK8T
I added the link to the description as well.
incredible pictures! subscribed.
Thanks for the sub! Much appreciated!
How did you get the photo of sunset with the people correctly exposed and the sun is also properly exposed ... ?m

I need a prime lens for only landscape photography..is it worth to buy???
If you’re just shooting landscapes I’d suggest something a little wider, maybe the 20mm f/1.8. It’s also great for astrophotography!
Wow love this video, excelent content.
Thanks so much for the kind words!
35 mm really a good choice for story telling....I like it ❤

A solid choice 👍🏻
Too big to carry hence will not bring it around often. IMO.

Sports can be tough to shoot without a zoom lens but if you're approaching it from a photojournalistic perspective, a 35 could work :)
