Doc, these saw videos are excellent. I started off with a 130 Pocketboy medium but after watching your vids I bought a 240 Gomboy medium and have now indulged in a 360 Bigboy 2000 with extra large teeth. This last one is ferocious and excellent on "green" (freshcut) wood. There is a new technique to learn, pull-cutting rather than push-cutting but once mastered... sawing is actually a pleasure. It's great for a workout. Thanks for the post. Paul

I have a right shoulder pain now due to chopping wood too much with my Japanese hatchet. Swinging a heavy thing with a single arm is no good to our health when we are old enough. So I gave up chopping and started investigation into the folding saws. It's because anyway I need to cut wood sometimes in the wilderness until I give up camping or hunting. Sawing seems much more friendly to my shoulder and no problem so far. Thanks.

It's also just a safer choice. Accidents do happen when using a sharp axe or hatchet. These Silky saws are just a fantastic tool.

About 4 minutes and that Bigboy was through that huge log. Looked like hardwood too. Just... _wow_. I never knew they could be so efficient. I may have to pick one up.

Nice, i love how the bigboy has different angles you can adjust the blade to. That seems to be a very useful feature.

Thanks for this, I have loved Silky for years. Started with a Pocketboy and immediately got a Gomboy. At work (landscaper and arborist) I use a Zubat 330 large teeth regularly. I find the curved blades let you maintain pressure on the cut longer than a straight blade, you tend to lose power the farther away from your hand that the blade pressure is.

2:07 weird thought, at some point in future, generations would look at this video and envy/crave to be in the nature (but it won't exist), the noise and cleanliness of running water the purity of elements of nature, it's all so precious. People who can experience it are lucky

Hello my friend. Another good video. Silky makes the best folding saw by far IMO. Second would be the Bahco Laplander. Personally, I think more Bushcrafters will buy Silky's as they become more common. Thank you again for your excellent videos. You are well respected everywhere!

It's so strange to me to see someone on the other side of the planet doing outdoors survival stuff. I mean you look and dress just like hunters and survivalists in my own country, but are thousands of miles away in a totally different country. Just another testament to how similar we all are. • @virtuovice

Yes, I did. It was not perfect but acceptable though. We should not take the bend serious on the folding saw. But we should saw slower than I did. We should not put force when pushing the saw but do it gently. Silky is a pull cutter and can bend easily when there is resistance during pushing. Strong bending during fast sawing can result in snapping off of the blade and injuring us. I was in a hurry to saw the wood in an acceptable period for the video and it was wrong. Thanks.

This area is up north on Hokkaido island and the water is not very clear because the cold weather doesn't decompose the organic materials completely. When I go camping to the south area, the water is completely clear and I don't carry water but drink from the river directly. I like it very much. Thanks.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It cuts a thick log easily. The blade is thin and takes bending. But it will hold fairly well. Its handle pivot area won't break easily. The point is it cuts a thick log much more easily than a large chopper. Thanks.

At 1:17 it bends hard, that made me tense up, but it took the abuse. I tend to put a small cut at the bottom of a log to make the job easier, check out "arborist cut" just a tip you may all ready know. I enjoy watching your vids, and thank you very much.

The Silky saws are excellent. I used regularly the Silky Accel 160mm as a pruning saw for side branches - a real workhorse and will do 100s of trees before needing a new blade. Even with 160mm Sometimes the blade will pinch and bend/break. It is more prone to happen with dead wood and usually happens when working at an awkward angle or when trying to cut too fast. With patience and care the BigBoy saw will be useful - like you say possibly the slightly smaller size might be better.

Outdoor activity is my hobby. It refreshes me much. But it should work in an emergent survival situation like earthquakes or some chaos too. So I assume this hobby will save my family and me someday. We will be able to live like primitive people in emergency. We both are prepared. Thanks.

Hi, Wako. The stream in the beginning is very attractive to me, especially today (I've been drinking a LOT of water... it's well over 100 degrees in Southern California). It made me think of a question: where I live, most experts claim that we should treat all wilderness water before drinking it. When you are in the wilderness, do you carry water from home, or do you drink untreated water from creeks, streams, rivers, etc.? Thanks for your anticipated answer, and for another great video.

Say Heah, Yeah, I have a Silky BigBoy 2000 which I use more in cold weather. I was going to get a Silky Katana 500, and I still might. But for now, I got a Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Bow Saw. It doesn't have screws, or boots and nuts to put it together so you can't loose them, It foods together into shape and the ABS Handle clamps tention on the saw blade when you clamp it down. It's stronger INK than the Bons Dustrude Buck Saw that works very similarly. Yeah, I know you will like itm You buy the sheaths separate. So I bought the Crazy Horse Leather Sheath and I also put a Aggressive spare blade in the Sheath and I got the all purpose saw blade first. But Dave C. said he liked the dry wood saw best.,,.

It depends on what railway station you have near your residence. Tanzawa on Odakyu line, Okutama on Chuo and Ohme line, Okuchichibu on Seibu line. I like Okutama the best. Soon after you get off the train, it is full of nature there. Take care!

These hand-saw videos are great to see. I wonder if there would be less bending with the "Bigboy" if they thickened the blade very slightly. Or I wonder if the steel is different from the Gamboy.

I don't like the teeth cannot be sheathed in the handle completely on the 2000 LX Teeth. But it has a bit thicker blade and must be tougher and just right for thick log cutting. Its curvature seems efficient for the thick log too. It will be a better saw when the owner doesn't care about its incomplete sheathing. Thanks.

I was a United Brotherhood of Carpenters And Joiners of America Journeyman, and one of the skills we were taught was the proper use of a handsaw. In short, you are supposed to just guide the saw, and let the teeth do the cutting. You and far too many would be "survival and wilderness experts" on You Tube, still commit the amateurish habit of forcing the sawblade through the cut, risking either breaking, bending, or kinking the blade; just as you did in the video, which can have disastreous results on survival. Unlike you, who can just make another video take, while you go and get a new saw, someone who would be foolish enough to emulate your mishandling of the saw, and how to properly use it may not have the opportunity to get a quick replacement. Speed is important, but not at the risk of damaging the blade. The proper manner of using any handsaw is to let the saw make the cut without forcing it. Many will not heed what I just said. But Ill tell you this much; whomever, kinks their blade in a true survival situation because of foolish disregard of how to properly use any handsaw, if they live through their carelessness of forcing and damaging their saw, it will be a lesson they shall never forget.
The school of hard knocks is the best teacher of all.

It was just a demonstration of the saw performance. For a real need I cut a fallen tree on a mountain road to go ahead during deer hunting. Once or twice in a season I need to do it. But that kind of road is usually closed at the end. For making firewood in camping I like 210 mm or 240mm saw. I often cut a bit thinner wood than the first one with a saw in the wilderness camping. The first one was an oak tree and the second one was a pine tree. Thanks.

Very comfortable handle, super strong, and smaller than Big Boy when opened. I think you would like it a lot in the 330mm size. Let me know if you get one please? Sorry for last mistake :-)

What you demonstrated looks like a great saw. Here in the US, we also can buy the "Silky Folding Landscaping Hand Saw BIGBOY 2000 Extra Large Teeth 356-36" -- it is available on Amazon. The difference seems to be a two-meter radius curvature in the blade, which is clearly visible when the saw is photographed in its closed position. What is your opinion of such a CURVED-blade variation?

I have a new bigboy 2000 I got from amazon.co.jp and I am liking it a lot, you might try it too to compare with the LG teeth model. It has bigger teeth than the 荒目 at 6.5 per 30mm. I used it camping this weekend and cut down a small green コナラ oak (this was a mistake haha I thought it was dead) and it was very fast. Anything small and dry it just cut through like crazy.

Silyky Bigboy is good to keep in the truck in case of a tree across the road but it is too long to stand up to hard usage - if the blade sticks like at 1:17 then it will bend and sometimes break. Gomboy is a better size.

I think he was just comparing the teeth on the two blades. He made mention that he felt the large teeth were better. I don't think this was for any mechanical advantage or anything. The nice thing is that Silky seems to sell saw blades with whatever size teeth you want for just about all of their folding saws, so you could possibly get a smaller saw with the same large teeth and have comparable performance. The only thing you would lose would be the advantage a longer blade gives you.
