The Ibis Ripley Gen 4 - Reviewed

    A 29’er with just under five inches of rear wheel travel, the Ibis Ripley has always been the perfect tool for most of us mountain bikers. Since the release of the “Long and Slack” Ripley two years ago, Ibis has added a new bike to their line-up, the wildly popular Ripmo. That bike helped establish a number of standards for the company, things like a much longer front center than their previous models, the use of reduced offset forks, steep seat angles, and mechanical changes like using bushings in the lower link.
    For the brand new Ripley, Ibis took all of these design cues and created what is essentially a baby Ripmo - and that’s a good thing.

    Thanks for the review, very nice. I'd like to ask a little more about your thoughts about running the Ripley with the 120mm fork. My next bike is going to be a 'down-country' aggressive XC bike. I had pretty much settled on the Santa Cruz Blur TR build (from Fanatik, of course!), but the new Ripley has made me pause. The Blur is a couple of pounds lighter, but the Ripley has the more progressive geometry that I am interested in. I know you haven't ridden the Ripley with the 120mm fork, but can you comment on how you think that would fit in the 'down-country' mold?

    • @AJ-we9kd
      @AJ-we9kd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your comparing a xc bike to a trail bike. The decision is yours and not Fanatik’s. Unless their hooking you up with a new bike ;) Second most important thing is fit. Take this bike for example the sizing of the OG, LS, V4 varies a lot especially compared to other brands. You might find a brand you can’t comfortably fit on given stock bars and stem. Additionally the stock wheels on the ibis are wide have you ridden them before? The difference is massive in terms of traction, has it’s cons as well.

  • @grid-station
    @grid-station 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you were to go with a 140mm fork, should the offset be 51mm? Or if not, how would it handle with a 51mm offset 140mm fork?

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's no saying it should or shouldn't be 51mm offset. A longer offset fork will give you a more precise, quick steering feel, whereas a shorter offset fork will feel more calm and "locked-in."
      One way that you could look at it is that if you ride very fast trails with wide open corners, a reduced offset fork will have a calmer steering feel, but if you ride tight, twisting trails, a longer offset fork will give you a quicker steering feel.

      Hi Micheal! Glad to hear that my suggestion was sound. I haven't grown any more (maybe one day) and felt right at home on the medium Ripley. I believe it had a 40mm stem. If you do like the med HD4 and are thinking of picking up this bike, I think it'd be best to stick with that size.

    5'10" on a medium? Seems Ibis charts would recommend you ride a Large. How did the smaller bike feel and do you usually prefer a smaller bike?

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I am 5'10", with an arm span of 5'10" and a 31" inseam. If I were any taller or if I had longer arms/torso, I'd opt for a large, but as it stands I find larges that conform to modern sizing to be a lot less fun to ride. They are so long that they become more difficult to corner on, move around, etc.
      I actually take some issue with their sizing guide, which I've talked with them about. Their sizing guidelines haven't changed in multiple generations of bike. The original medium Ripley was suggested for the same size person as this Gen 4 is, despite it having a wheelbase that was 8 cm shorter, a reach that was 6cm shorter, etc, etc.
      They feel that as times have changed, people are looking for different things for their given height, so they have kept true to their recommendations. At the end of the day, there is a good bit of wiggle room, and it is a bit subjective. Best way to figure it out is to demo the bike, or if that's not possible, compare the geo to a bike that you currently own and have a feel for.
      Let me know if you have any more questions, and thanks for watching!

Either one climbed a hell of a lot better than my 26in Banshee Rune. To be honest I really like another bite you guys still at I tried, the evil offering. Descendant better than the ripmo and climbed better than the switchblade, two of which I really liked. So what's the BB height with 120mm fork? I wish Ibis would publish that or better yet just designed the bike around 120/120 travel.

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be a very close estimate to simply add or subtract 10mm, which would put the bike at 325mm BB height with a 120mm fork. Considering that different tires can be millimeters taller or shorter, that's a more than adequate estimate.
      If you really wanted to figure out how much lowering your fork by 10mm would change your BB, you could calculate it with a sine equation!

    • @brianwilliams2907
      @brianwilliams2907 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think if you go from a 130mm to a 120mm fork it would only be about a 5mm change. You're only lowering the front half of the bike. And really less than that considering the head angle. Edit: I just did a calc on an online geo calculator and it said 3.7mm lower bottom bracket.@@FanatikBikeCo

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ask yourself what kinds of trails you tend to ride, and how you approach them. Do you want an enduro bike or a trail bike? The Mojo is the least aggressive and supports plus tires - if you like those, I'd go with that bike. If you like spending long days in the saddle, the Ripley is probably your best bet. If you'll ever be taking your bike to the bike park, or really love seeking out the gnarliest trail around, I'd go with the Ripmo!

      Proud Ripmo owner here... it's a great everyday bike but it is burly. It climbs well but really shines when I'm bombing downhill. Big drops, shuttle rides, park laps, hell yeah! If you mostly stay on trails and don't get too rowdy then the Ripley would be a great choice and still very capable. There's no reason to be "overbiked" on your everyday trails.

    I'm hearing people say it climbs crazy awesome but isn't very stable on the downhill. I'm hearing people say the Ripmo is awesome at downhill speed but it doesn't climb like a Ripley.
    I'm thinking a MORIP is what is needed, a melding of the three, Mojo for carving, Ripley for climbing and Ripmo for confidence at speed, downhill.
    Call it the MORIP or LEMO, whatever, but 135mm rear and 150mm front I believe addresses that niche where most people spend the most time on most trails they ride.
