Molly Boy you have got metal in your veins. After Cliff died in 86’ I wrote a letter to his parents saying I was a huge fan and my sorrow for thier loss and asked politely if they had any pictures of him they could part with so in 89 I received a letter from the Burtons SF call and I forgot about the letter so I opened it and they wrote me a 2 page letter and 4 pictures I asked for persollaly written by his mom!!! And I’m a personal friend of his older sister and we text and she rerified the letter was real and the address was were they lived at the time. I have letter and pictures if I could show you 🤘🤘🤘❤️‼️ keep Ripping it up. Play some early Exodus. I know my metal I’m 52 years old and been listening since 76’. If you play Day on the Green 85’ whom the bell tolls that were my pictures are from
Now when you go back and listen to the intros to Orion and Damage Inc, realize that what you are listening to is Cliff doing his wizardry with his bass. It's all bass.
You won't ever hear another Bass guitar like this again😢 the original cassette tape had no break between this song and, "Whiplash" it just went right in!
Metallica never would have gotten so big without cliffs contributions. He was schooled in music and taught them a lot. He brought the bass to the forefront. He inspired so many. I was lucky to have seen them live once when cliff was still with us.
Yeah Molly!!!! Stoked you watched this. THIS is Metalica. This is what we are metal heads and Metallica fans love. Cliff was amazing bass player. But like alotvery talented players, he died to soon. Replaced by another phenom player Jason Newsted, then Rob Trujillo, also a phenon. Thanks Molly. This made my day bro..
Cliff actually completely altered his guitar, changed the neck and rewired the pickups to gather the frequencies in ranges he wanted. I don't remember everything he did, but dude really knew his instrument.
Cliff was a beast. So extraordinary basist, you can just imagine how people felt that over 40 years ago. His influence on many basists and especially for Metallica music was huge. On top of having virtuous skills as basists, he had good knowledge of music theory, and that really helped Metallica to build their songs and style.
Hi Young Mollyboy. Now you must go 'for whom the bell tolls, 1985, a day on the green'. That's the next Cliff video (live) that I recommend. Cliff masterpieces also exist in 'Orion'and 'The call of Ktulu'. I suggest you look up a bass enhanced version of these two songs as the mix has the bass low. But the bass is the best parts in these two songs. A tribute song to Cliff, after his death, is 'To live is to die'. It's a great studio version to dissect and I've seen others in your comments request it. May I also suggest 'master of puppets, Seattle 89'. As this is a live version of master of puppets, that begins with a shortened version of to live is to die in honour of Cliff with their new bass player at the time, Jason Newsted, in his first major tour performing a tribute with James and Kirk for Cliff. It's hair raising. Thanks for the vids Mollyboy.
If you want to further your appreciation for the bass, check out Primus, 'Tommy the Cat', or 'Jerry Was a Racecar Driver'. You will be amazed by Les Claypool playing the hell out of the bass.
To Live Is To Die is a Must and Absolutely legendary and 🔥 song. Also loving bassist who play Bass like lead Guitar. John Myung of Dream Theater is On Cliffs level!
8:50 - Finger bass guitar is one of my most favourite things to do with instruments, that and playing drums! Have you ever heard a song where it has no bass guitar at all (apart from justice for all....lol) but a normal song of any genre, the guitars sound flat - that is because the bass guitar makes the electric guitar sound full and good! It also is like a translator from the drums to the electric guitar player because it plays along with the kick, snare and hi hat of the beat but also plays some of the same riffs/notes as the electric guitars do! I love the Mister Cliff Burton ALRIGHT! bit and even when Cliff does some bung notes he makes it work!
I want to mention few bonus tips to listen. As you already listened Orion, other instrumental where Cliff can be heard is Call of Ktulu, on their 2nd album. He does some really fancy stuff with his bass on background, kinda presenting the beast in the song. It can be bit hard to hear if not focusing, but there's even actually some bass enchanced versions on youtube. And for this Anasthesia, if you want to hear Cliff's insipred version, Metallica did joined concert with San Francisco Symphony orchestra, and their lead double basist made hits tribute to Cliff playing this. Worth to listen, and watching the faces of Metallica band members cheering after he's finished. :) "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth (Tribute to Cliff Burton ) - Metallica & San Francisco Symphony (S&M2)" is the title of video if you want to see it.
Nice job finding this. I remember the first time hearing this on a walkman = mind blown! What great vid of the metallica major rager. You didnt go wrong watching this first. Its an killer version. Ive been a fan of Cliff since 86, started playing in 92. I was playing some fuzz bass today. I actually have never seen this particular solo in its entirety. Ive seen parts of the show on other videos and have the audio. Whats good is you can see the pickup mods he did to his bass. He replaced the stock pickups with a Gibson EB pickup and to get his super high frequencies he installed a single coil near the bridge. He literally build a one-of-kind bass. Its one of the reasons he has such a unique overdriven sound. He also used Big Muff and the Morley Fuzz Wah and a whole lot of attitude.
Keep up the good work I actually like your reactions, they are genuine and I absolutely love Metallica’s music and Cliff is the a big part of that original sound
I played guitar for over 20 years. I picked up the bass in 2021….havent touched a regular guitar since. Its so much fun and different perspective to music.
Great idea to start with this live version, gives you an idea of how legendary these guys are. And by the way you still have lots of hits to go through! Most youtubers only do the first 5 albums, you need to hear some of their later stuff like "spit out the bone" or "all nightmare long". You'd be amazed at how much they still rock even at 60 years old
I am so glad you found Cliff, he was a genius, you also said you thought that people couldn't do that with a bass, he was doing this 40 years ago. Love your channel man, just a suggestion for a future album Lamb Of God Omens if you want to check out groove metal, or another one is Mr. Bungle Easter Bunny (shortened title) if you want some old school thrash, Mike Patton (Faith No More), Scott Ian (Anthrax) and Dave Lombardo ( Slayer) make up the band, trust me, you will like it.
I agree with you entirely. Cliff Burton listened to a lot of classical music. classical music was they heavy metal of its time. Not to mention he played his bass like a guitar! When I realized the beginning of For Whom The Bells Tolls was all bass I was pretty much amazed
The number of truly great and iconic bass players is considerably less than that of lead guitarists but Cliff was definitely one of the all time greats!!
Bass is Awesome! It's the lightning and thunder all wrapped up in one! When my son was 15 he was the bass player in a Metallica cover band called Blackened and his studio version of this was spot on!
I was 13 when this album came out, was hooked from first listen. And to experience each album and the progression from power metal, speed metal to thrash back to just metal and now rock metal 🤘😎🤘
Cliff was classically trained, piano, and bass guitar... Knew about arpeggio, knew where to place accents, a genius on bass 🤔 R. I. P. Clifford Lee Burton 💔😢 ***To live is to die*** is Metallica's tribute to Cliff ❤🤗
The man. The myth. The legend.... Cliff is my all-time favorite bassist. He applied his classical knowledge to his playing, making it more melodic (hence, his influence on Metallica's more melodic, timeless songs for their first three albums), but also his sound was so killer but original and his playing was just so natural and an extension of his soul. Sometimes I wonder what Metallica would sound like today if Cliff was still here... Imagine an “Orion, The Second Coming” or something. Man, oh man... Rock In Peace, CB.
Awesome reaction, my man! I've never seen this performance of this piece...so EPIC!!! You were talking about how different this bass performance was, and it made me think of Lemmy the lead singer of Motorhead...plays kindofa lead bass and does it very well...check out "Ace Of Spades" sometime...it was their biggest hit...
LOVE METALLICA!!! ❤️ Never heard them live before. Thanks so much for the first time! What do you think of that riff at the beginning? Beyond words. I own a lot of ametallica music now I'm on the hunt for some of their live versions. This was mad thanks again!😊
Good review mate. You have to check out for whom the bell tolls from day on the green. His playing is unbelievable in that video! His fingers look like rubber!
I had a bass guitar when I was in my early 20’s …was too scatterbrained to learn it back then. I’m 52 now and just got another one …gonna take the time to learn it properly🎵
Different guitar/bass pedals can achieve all kinds of crazy sound and effects. It’s cool what a bassist/guitarist can pull off with mixing different sound. Cliff’s main thing was mixing the distortion and wah pedal to get his own sound. That sound is so ill and really became his signature... I really miss it.
Congrats on the cigarette battle brotherman, keep it up!🤘 bro, if you want to hear some bass guitar, check out some "Primus" & the David Lee Roth album "Eat em & Smile" & the Mr Big song "Addicted to that Rush". Stellar bass!
Bass is the beast. You checkout a band called Mr Big and the track ShyBoy. Billy Sheehan is a master. Anything by Victor Wooten And Stu Hamm These guys make a living out of playing the bass. Then you have guys like Rex from Pantera, so under rated but man he can hold a groove. If you really want check out Suicidal Tendencies, the previous band of Metallicas current bass player. Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.... the lost goes on and on
Only Cliff could do that! What a bass player that Man was! Such a loss to Metallica and the fans, RIP Cliff. Check out Lemmy playing his bass that will open your eyes Molly as well. Brilliant reaction mate keep them coming 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This is why Cliff was a pioneer. He truly created a new sound and form of music to play. He was originally a guitarist as well, some don't know that. It's how he was able to play like this. you want sick bass? Check out infectious grooves, the old band of the current metallica bass player. INSANE stuff
My step father-in-law was standing in front of the stage during this show, working security. He told me the band were a bunch of good kids, so down to earth. He said they were different, and he knew they'd go far. BTW, this is why some people give And Justice... so much crap, knowing how talented Cliff was and then deciding to mute Jason completely. Even so, I still love And Justice...
In The Call Of Ktulu is Cliffs bass Ctulu's voice. It's hard to hear, cuz the bass is very quiet. But with an enhanced mixed you can hear him und he is the solo (bass) guitar in the song \m/
Because bass players typically use their fingers instead of a pick, the sound is much softer. That combined with the extra thick strings gives it a warm fuzzy sound reminiscent of a synth or computer sound. He has done this on several occasions, like For “Who The Bell Tolls.” My personal favorite example is his work on Orion. The intro is a minute long bass part that stays on the lower octaves. But in the second guitar solo, cliff can be heard mimicking the guitar an octave or two higher, and because of the computer like sound, it matches the space theme because it sounds like those sounds that people pick of from space, or satellites. And then there’s his solo at the end, which couldn’t sound more like space. To elaborate on this type of sound from the bass, cliff isn’t the only one to do this. A good few have tried, a good example is muse. More of a modern rock band, the bass can easily be mistaken as synth.
What you just saw is how Cliff got into Metallica really. Before Cliff, James' old roommate Ron McGovney played bass for them when they first formed up. It became obvious that Ron wasn't going to be the guy going forward. One night, Lars and James were told they should check out the bassist in a band called Trauma which was playing at a nearby club. That night they saw Cliff doing all kinds of cool stuff like this on bass including early versions of what you saw in this video. They were so blown away that they poached him right after the show.
Good on you for quitting smoking. The first time I contracted the Koof was 2020. After coming out the other side intact after 2 weeks at home, I realized I had no craving at all for a cigarette... Breathing became the priority. ~~ Band - Dream Theater - Song - Panic Attack
Cliff loved classical, opera, bluegrass and hillbilly rock. He got the rest of the band to listen to his favorites. They attribute the leap in complexity from Kill Em All to Ride the Lightning to him.
absolute legend! the distortion and wah pedal makes it quite different in the way you should play a bass! if you like bass players playing with their fingers you have Iron Maiden's Steve Harris (any song) who just has no limit to how crazy a song can be! you have also Les Claypool of Primus who can do these funky weird crazy songs! (a must discover band!) bass is underrated but getting very popular fast! awesome vid!
There are few people more talented than Cliff was. RIP 🪦 This is one of the few times I will use the term Legend because it’s frivolously used nowadays and it is definitely warranted when referring to Cliff 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯

@@tysoncampbell4607great lie photos or it didn’t happen
Cliff wasnt a typical bassist, his skill was in another level
Imagine an alternate universe where Cliff lived on to play with Les Claypool....
Almost every "reactor" to older Metallica don't realize their hearing Bass riffs not 6 strings. Love it
Distortion pedal, wah pedal, rickybass and cliff playing...bass heaven.
React to their live in 1989
Heaven heaven not just bass heaven.🤘🏻
Well said!
Now when you go back and listen to the intros to Orion and Damage Inc, realize that what you are listening to is Cliff doing his wizardry with his bass. It's all bass.
Also, For Whom The Bell Tolls
Towards the back end of Orion there is a solo that most people think is a guitar solo but it’s actually distorted harmonised basses
The reaction everytime people hear or see Cliff on his bass ...is gold ....
You won't ever hear another Bass guitar like this again😢 the original cassette tape had no break between this song and, "Whiplash" it just went right in!
If the album version didnt start with “…Bass solo, take 1” no one listening would have believed it was a bass guitar
Cliff was 21 years old in 1983. RIP
Metallica died with Cliff.
Four guys destined to change Music for ever…settings new standards….raising the bar to an otherworldly level 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Cliff was the best bass player ever , no one was like him !!!
TY, he did things that the gates before didn't, just mind bogg.
Waiting patiently for "To Live is to Die"...
Come on Molly boy, we are waiting patiently for It, IS atributte to cliff
Hell yeah. Not crying during the harmonic section and James's solo is a crime punished by law
To Live is To Die! Yessss
James’ solo captures the emotion perfectly as if your can hear the bands’ tears for Cliff
TO LIVE IS TO DIE
always hated how the camera focused on James and Kirk when they came back in, meanwhile Cliff is absolutely still going off
Excactly! Been saying that for years.
James is and still is the Fucking Lead Singer the Star of The Band.
Agreed.
@@dremcghee6578 uh oh somebody is dickriding james here
As soon as hear “Bass solo, take 1” I get goose bumps.
Cliff Burton and Randy Rhoads would have shattered the universe if they played together
Ohhhhh Hell Yeah
To hear them both put a song together
Super Uncanny
No one plays bass like Cliff 🤘👌💕
Cliff is the reason I chose to play Bass.
You’ve gotta check out the live version of For Whom The Bell Tolls!! Another demonstration of the legendary Cliff Burton!!
Metallica never would have gotten so big without cliffs contributions. He was schooled in music and taught them a lot. He brought the bass to the forefront. He inspired so many. I was lucky to have seen them live once when cliff was still with us.

You'll never have your mind blown by a bass player like you just did ever again. Mr Cliff Burton ladies and gentlemen.
My favorite bassist of all time. I wish we could have heard him for another 30 or 40 years. Rip \,,/
Cliff actually completely altered his guitar, changed the neck and rewired the pickups to gather the frequencies in ranges he wanted. I don't remember everything he did, but dude really knew his instrument.

Cliff was the master on Bass. Long live his music and videos. Goat 🐐🤘🏼
The legend, Cliff Burton. I lived in Sweden near Ljungby for 7 years and have been to where he died. RIP Brother, always sorely missed.
The fact that he improvised most, if not all, of this solo is even more impressive
There has never been a bass player better than Mr Cliff Burton since his passing 100%
Hi Young Mollyboy. Now you must go 'for whom the bell tolls, 1985, a day on the green'.
That's the next Cliff video (live) that I recommend.

Les Claypool, Flea, Bootsie, There is a rabbit hole of bassists. So many more than I thought of quick here. Cliff was one of the best!
Justin Chancellor, Geddy Lee!

Seen Les with Primus and the Fearless Frog Brigade. Love the sound of both groups!
Steve Harris, Billy Sheehan, Jaco Pastorious, Kip Winger
OK, mein Herr... you finally won me over with this one... Ja, and I can see you respond to your viewers, subbed! 😁
To Live Is To Die is a Must and Absolutely legendary and 🔥 song. Also loving bassist who play Bass like lead Guitar. John Myung of Dream Theater is On Cliffs level!

in 1983 this video quality was actually HD
I want to mention few bonus tips to listen. As you already listened Orion, other instrumental where Cliff can be heard is Call of Ktulu, on their 2nd album. Buying a bass next week because of this!! Great reaction, man!
Nice job finding this. I remember the first time hearing this on a walkman = mind blown! What great vid of the metallica major rager. You didnt go wrong watching this first. Its an killer version. Cliff Burton remains a musical hero to this day. Mike
He's the reason I got into bass! Great reaction.
There are levels to everything young man. You are learning a very valuable lesson. Cliff was another level my friend....R.I.P.
Oooo this will be fun to see😂Only other bassist I’d put up there with Cliff is Les Claypool
I played guitar for over 20 years. I picked up the bass in 2021….havent touched a regular guitar since. Its so much fun and different perspective to music.
As you uploading this in under a year...I grew up listening to Cliff, Paul Entwhistle, JPJ. And now Trujillo.😊
If this footage didnt exist and you told someone about this, they wouldnt believe you. Legendary
Great idea to start with this live version, gives you an idea of how legendary these guys are. And by the way you still have lots of hits to go through! Most youtubers only do the first 5 albums, you need to hear some of their later stuff like "spit out the bone" or "all nightmare long".

You need to check out the band Primus (Les Claypool on bass). You might think their music is weird, but they are brilliant musicians.
Like Randy Rhoads, Jimi Hendrix and Dimebag Darrell, such a bizarre death. RIP. Legend.
"For Whom the Bell Tolls" live Day at the Green, a must for you to check out

Orion really showcases cliff and how much range he has on creating with the bass guitar from rhythm to solos, that track has it all
Gone , but NEVER forgotten !
LOVE METALLICA!!! ❤️ Never heard them live before. Thanks so much for the first time! What do you think of that riff at the beginning? Beyond words. I own a lot of ametallica music now I'm on the hunt for some of their live versions. This was mad thanks again!😊
Imagine You & 3000 Friends in a small club in dallas tx and Metallica played this. 🤘
It blew my mind at 16.

I've been a bassist going on 20 years, Cliff was one of the people that inspired me to learn
Bro, I tell no lie, but if you want to see Metallica in their prime live please react to “Battery” live in Seattle 1989. It’s bloody insane

Cliff played the spangled star in his final anesthesia performance. He was truly unique with his playing, even to this day.
Always thought it was a guitar for many years! Amazing bassist 👌
Is this in Oakland ca ...was there right up on the bearer.👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻 how it began 🤘🏻🤘🏻👏🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
The intro from “For whom the bell tolls” is cliff on bass, and you never know it by just listening
Congrats on the cigarette battle brotherman, keep it up!🤘 bro, if you want to hear some bass guitar, check out some "Primus" & the David Lee Roth album "Eat em & Smile" & the Mr Big song "Addicted to that Rush". Stellar bass!

Anything by Victor Wooten

These guys make a living out of playing the bass. Then you have guys like Rex from Pantera, so under rated but man he can hold a groove.
If you really want check out Suicidal Tendencies, the previous band of Metallicas current bass player.
Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.... the lost goes on and on
The legend lives!!

Molly seeing Cliff for 1st time is like seeing Jimi or Eddie for 1st time. 🧠💥
Because bass players typically use their fingers instead of a pick, the sound is much softer. That combined with the extra thick strings gives it a warm fuzzy sound reminiscent of a synth or computer sound. He has done this on several occasions, like For “Who The Bell Tolls.”
My personal favorite example is his work on Orion.
Cliff is awesome in Trapped under ice and escape
Amazing 🤘🤘🤘
CLIFF BURTON WAS THE FOUNDATION OF METALLICA, HE WAS ONE OF KIND... RIP CLIFF... WE MISS YOU
What you just saw is how Cliff got into Metallica really.
I always look forward to seeing your reaction videos, congrats on quitting cigs 🤘🏻
We celebrate and fear Cliff's Riffs 🙌
I'm sure Cliff is on his cloud right now and rocking out...🤘😝
Headbangers 4 life 🤘🤘🤘
Good on you for quitting smoking.
😮I love this🤘🤘
Cliff is a god, he revolutionized the bass that's why the first 3 albums are a gift
Pausing during a Cliff Burton solo is a felony!
Lock me up and throw away the key…
absolute legend! the distortion and wah pedal makes it quite different in the way you should play a bass! if you like bass players playing with their fingers you have Iron Maiden's Steve Harris (any song) who just has no limit to how crazy a song can be! you have also Les Claypool of Primus who can do these funky weird crazy songs! (a must discover band!) bass is underrated but getting very popular fast! awesome vid!
Nobody better than Cliff imo⚔️🤘 watching Metallica live keeps Cliff Burton alive ⚔️🤘
This changed all of our minds on bass guitar. But 40 years ago.
Cliff often used a distortion pedal and that's what makes this song sound atypical for bass. What a performer though! LEGEND \m/
There are few people more talented than Cliff was. RIP 🪦
This is one of the few times I will use the term Legend because it’s frivolously used nowadays and it is definitely warranted when referring to Cliff 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯
