    8 minutes, No words.
Yet a story was told somehow.
This is why metal is the closest to classical music.
Beethoven's 5th symphony has no words. Yet 220 years later it is still instantly recognisable.

    • @colonelquack
      @colonelquack ปีที่แล้ว +13

Metal is classical music with guitars. You can't be metal without the complexity.

@@ST1973 Heh, to a degree maybe, but no - there's classical musical theory running through this, and a lot of the rest of their work at this time - this is what Cliff brought to the band. His knowledge elevated these works into what could be considered a form of modern classical music. Which was why he was such a loss to the band. He did manage to impart of lot of that musical theory to the others though, and they worked through it like champs and were able to continue.

I've listened to almost all of the Metallica songs on classic covers (violins, piano, etc) and it's remarkable how it still sounds cool and masterclass.

      @philrob1978 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@oldb12 Exactly my friend - which proves the point - the S&M album they did with film score composer Michael Kamen also proved how "classical" in nature these works are .

The basist Cliff Burton is behind this song. He was the musical brains of the early Metallica, and super virtuous on bass guitar. He died just so young in bus accident during their tour. Such a tragedy.
I really recommend to watch his bass solo from their first album, Anasthesia (Pulling teeth). And preferably the live version from Chicago 1983, to see him in action. He turned the bass into solo instrument in a totally new way, and is still concidered on of the bass legends.
The quality of that live film is very low in todays standards, but still you can see his talents. Really recommend to watch for the experience.
And btw, thanks for these reactions, really pleasure to watch. Keep on the Metallica journey!

Absolutely this. Whenever I see someone react to this song, and I see that look of bafflement settle over their face as the bass solo kicks in, I’m IMMEDIATELY taken back to my first listen, which was on one of those big ‘ghetto blaster’ dual-cassette boomboxes in this little shed that my mate Jeff eventually insulated, installed a couch and a loft bed within along with a TV and VCR, and more or less moved into at 15 or 16. He and I and 2 or 3 mutual friends used to play guitar, get drunk, and get high in there for whole weekends at a stretch.
The point is, though, I remember well clearly hearing that bass solo, turning my head very slightly to the side, and asked, “Who just played that solo?”
      “That was Cliff.”
“What, you mean that overdubbed, harmonised lead solo?”
      “That’s the one.”
“Can a bass guitar do that?”
“Clearly; we just heard one do it.”
“Fucking hell. Can we run the tape back?”
      Etc.
Over the years, I’ve learnt that a surprising number of people can relate to this story.
      But anyway, the

It was me that recommended it. The entire album is stellar. Not all Metallica does is fabulous, but the majority of their songs are.
If you're looking for something different, try the Maori band, Alien Weaponry, song Kai Tangata. It's not in English, but i think you'll get out of your chair over it.
I've been listening to rock and metal for 30+ years like a lot of people you'll encounter here. We can keep you busy listening to new tunes for a decade and still not be close to done.
Other great bands to start with: AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Dio, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, Megadeth are all sure to be the perfect introduction to metal.

We had a 3200 watt PA system hooked up to the stereo with four 400 watt, 15 inch subwoofer with 8 inch brass horn speakers and had this cranked up one day. Our elderly neighbors (65-70) came over to ask who the rock band playing classical music was....they loved it!

Great tune, great reaction! I remember when I was in high school (in the 90's) my Art Class took a trip to the Museum Of Fine Arts Houston, we were told ahead of time there would be a Walkman, mobile cassette tape player with headphones, that had a tape that curates the artwork. So I packed a lunch and a joint plus a Metal Instrumental tape I put together that of course included ORION. So when we got there I peeled off from the class, walked down the street, Burned Down, went back into the Museum, got my Walkman, put in my own tape of Metal Instrumentals and just strolled around, high, rocking out and LOVING all the amazing works of ART, including the ones I was listening to!

Welcome to the Metallica family! your in for a treat. To my mind, they are the most versatile band ever, and the most creative and technical as well. I don’t mean they are the most technical ever, I just mean they’re in the conversation for being extremely technical and they’re also in the conversation for creativity. I haven’t heard a band that’s had both of these traits at a high-level and for such a prolonged period of time.
I was lucky that I found them in 1990 when I was in high school. Going out into my car, putting my seat back, popping an album in, and closing my eyes and just listened and absorbed all of their music. They definitely save my life.

So, James is lead vocals and rythym guitar, the late Cliff Burton was the bassist, Kirk is lead guitar and Lars on the drums. There are a few songs where James and Kirk play together. Good stuff

I been listening to metal for 40 years and id say Metallica is definitely a top 10 for me. I havent listened to much of what they have done past the black album. Everything prior to that is simply pure gold.

Dunno how I found myself here but this was great - glad you recognise this as the masterpiece that it is. It took a few tokes for my mates to understand this too when I introduced it to them a long time ago, so don't blame you for that. Now you're broken in, you can listen to it anytime without enhancement. You also seem like a good lad, so will check out your other stuff. Great to see a younger generation get on board with this.

I was fan of Metallica a long time but i just listened their music for fun until this song . This song emotionally binded me to them . When i listen this song i always start smoking where u smoked that exact time . I don't know how can i describe it but Metallica has ability connect dark and bright side of emotions . And this song has so much meaning to me from dark side but in a good way because when i listen this song i don't feel i'm alone , i feel like my emotions musicalized by them and sure they felt the same feelings in that period . And if u think about it this was the Cliff Burton's last and best masterpiece , it becomes more dramatic to hear . I feel like he was good friend of mine and he is trying to comfort me when i'm depressed everytime i hear this song .

The intro is not heavy guitar. It’s all bass from the legend himself
    CLIFF BURTON

So much bass that’s mistaken for guitar in this song…

It was Cliff Burton's energy that was put into recording Orion that ultimately gave you the urge to smoke that joint even though you said you had put it down for the time being. For all intents and purposes, you smoked a joint in the name of an absolute legend and didn't even realize it at the time... R.I.P CLIFF BURTON!

Headbanging to a waltz arrangement. Doesn’t get more metal than that.

Fun fact, they need 8min of fill time, studio manager said album needed 8 min of more content, and in the studio, Cliff Burton picked up his base and just started playing, the I tro you heard was Cliff on bass with so much distortion, well James heard him, felt the vibe, and just started riffing, Lars and Kirk joined in later, and in a matter of an hour they picked what they liked, and threw it all together, and it became the masterpiece it is today, song was literally made in an hour, and it was just them, having a jam session.

Yes, that part at 9:36 that melted your brain was in fact a bass solo

Another great song from a masterpiece album. The solo gives me goosebumps like the first solo in Master of Puppets... melodic and harmonious bliss. Thanks for another great reaction 😊👍

Cliff could solo like a lead guitar with a bass. The guy was unreal! That’s why there’s so much pain on Justice. They also treated Newstead horribly. I would have left too!
