Cliff was writing solos with Kirk before they even touched a guitar. He'd write a sequence of notes and say "try this". When people say they miss old Metallica they really mean Cliff.

Hetfield wrote vast majority of their music then, too. It's when they shed Mustaine completely and went into the Master era that they were on top of their game. That was Hetfield, as well. Always been Hetfield.

What's really cool about Cliff and his solos is it has a melody, it's thought out and it makes sense. Most other bassists will just slap a million notes a second and blend together some sort of shed/slap mush. He has a motif but varies the piece enough to keep it interesting and engaging by modulating and using trills and harmonics.

Hilarious moment is when Cliff comes out of the final build up before the drums kick in. Cliff is holding the final note while waiting for Lars. He does a little "C'mon dude" with his right hand 😂

And after the first melody phrase, you cansee him say "I f*d it up", save it, and keep on like nothing happened. If he hadn't said anything, No one would have though it wasn't just a variation.

Although fwiw, though this is indeed a solo, it's an actual track on their album, he wasn't freestyling it, he just adds more flavor to it being live.... Remember, he was in his early 20's! RIP

He is the reason i play with my fingers ( for the most part). I knew the name Metallica, lot of headbangers where i grew up, and my buddy's older brother had his jean jacket painted with the puppets album cover. I didnt hear them till one, then i saw live cliff burton doing "bell toles" and I was like what is he doing, 3 fingers, wah, distortion on bass, and they looked like regular dudes, no make up, and fucking fast. Thanks a lot Michael for this song and for "not copying" and "no covering" what is not duplicated... "Anesthesia..." is something that should stay forever in its own original version and that's why I am glad (and appreciate it) that you reacted to this masterpiece in such a way. The beauty of Cliff's playing was improvisation, and although a few mistakes crept in, it does not change the fact that such performances allow you to appreciate HIS talent.

Also walked away with James's guitar pick he threw in the crowd. Was literally 15 feet from the band the entire show. Got lucky with the floor tix, was at a ticketmaster location with my buddy and despite getting their early 100 people was ahead of us but this location handed out tickets to determine spots in line. I got like 175 my buddy pulled #3 after us floor tickets were sold out. Literally 2-3 mins

This was such an exciting for new music. By the early 80’s I had grown disillusioned by Metal (the dominant sound was Hair Metal, i.e., pop songs with crunchy guitars), and I was listening exclusively to Hard Core Punk Rock, which provided a visceral and emotional engagement lacking in most other music. Then MetallicA came along and combined the power of Hard Core with the melodic and technical aspects of Metal, and totally blew my mind. Looking back for the 21st century it may seem like they’ve been part of mainstream Pop culture forever, but they were an underground band in a disparaged genre until they released the Black album.

Pretty sure this is the one where Cliff's bleeding all over the place from the fingertips on both his hands. Guy was truly amazing.

Props to the soundboard guy for keeping the guitars in the bed to finish this off. Pretty sure the guitars got louder on the next song.

How are we not talking about one of the most amazing songwriters and musicians to ever walk the earth in the suggestion videos is beyond me! Benjamin Tod is amazing! I have followed him all across the country to see him and his wife Ashley perform live. Traveled up to 20hrs before from West Virginia to Denver, Colorado just to get to see them live! They are so worth it! They are truly talented and such great people! If you guys have never heard of them, check out Lost Dog Street Band and/or Benjamin Tod himself. You'll be glad you did! Their story alone is a great story to read about. They've been through a lot of hard times and it's grown them into the beautiful people they are today. And it's what has fed their music and made it what it is as well. Check them out! You're welcome!

Sir, this was an outstanding video, with footage I hadn't seen before. Instructor to Instructor, no shade - I was paying attention to Cliff's *right* hand, instead of his left hand on the neck. I dunno, I guess that's just me and my steering wheel bassist thoughts... I was trained in the violin, and so not much use in music today! LOL

I never realized, until now, how much the beginning of "My Friend Of Misery" sounds like a slowed down version of the beginning of "Anesthesia".

Cliff’s playing was clean. Just because you can play fast doesn’t mean you should on every song!

As many times as I have seen clips of him playing this, I have never seen that one! It's a little different than the ones I have seen, and certainly a bit different from the KEA track. Probably because it's live and he is improvising. I also have never seen James and Kirk jump in at the end. Very cool clip to see, and as you said, very clear...especially for that era!

I think his fretting hand was the key. He was a monster at improvisation and keeping fluidity between notes. He's everything Kirk Hammett STILL wishes to be 40 years later.
