    Cheers for this. It's worth noting that because sand and leftovers take place at the start of each turn in gen 3 and 2 rather than at the end like in later gens, they also give an information advantage in offensive matchups of telling you who's faster before the turn takes place. Particularly relevant in gen 3 where OU pokemon can run a huge variety of EV spreads.
    Interesting to see how it's gone from the default choice to one option among many, with HDB being the standard option now.

    • @Freezermansaccountno
      @Freezermansaccountno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      It's still used a good amount in current gen, it fell off a bit because of competition from boots and Zmoves in gen7 and gen8. Still, some pokes such as rain seismitoad, swords dance kartana, dd dragapult and more run life orb.

    • @Loris71734
      @Loris71734 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      In all honesty Life Orb fell off a lot in usage in gen 4 and other older gens as well. I think there has just been a philosophy change in the past few years of competitive pokemon where longevity is more heavily emphasized than before even on offensive mons.

      Power creep buried it

    • @graylyhen9490
      @graylyhen9490 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      In games where you have residual damage (sandstorm and hazards) where it's ridiculous to remove them (Rapid Spin being shit and weather moves being iffy) it becomes harder to justify the damage boost especially combined with Scarf and priority. Life Orb makes a world of a difference but the EV (expected value) is awful when you consider that it's better EV to take the huge damage of Band/Specs and try to hedge your bets on safer moves
      Defog came along and saved the world but then we get the gens shitted up with risk free Regen spam cores and then they add in Boots. Combine that with Z-Moves and Megas of ORAS and USUM then we get to SwSh where it's toned down in power creep but injected with Boots and the Regen Mons are free money. Life Orb has it rough when you have to give up life in a game where residual damage is king

    • @Fig_Bender
      @Fig_Bender 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I know everyone is talking about singles, but when it comes to VGC you want a Life Orb user on basically every team you build. It is incredibly important for that little extra surprise damage that your opponent likely didn't ev for.

      @@weavilelover skarmory is a great pick in UU, and there is a lot of teams that consist on spikes stacking. Also, even on matchups where the opponent isn't using spikes, even resisted, stealth rocks are already putting Hippo/Quag on a tight spot against attackers like Excadrill and Krookodile, which they are supposed to check. But it's generally more for the Spikes matchup (also, you have to keep in mind that you're probably gonna get knock off'ed anyway, so boots is gonna help more than lefties in the case where ur gonna switch directly onto a knock off)
      Although i would say that Rocky Helmet is more common, but HDB being good on mons that resist rocks is wild.

    i feel like if leftovers never existed a lot would be so different about competitive pokemon.namely the fact that without leftovers many pokemon just dont have recovery period or if they do its rest.gen 3 is probably the most obvious example of a meta that would change without leftovers since leftovers cancelling sand is a big reason why offensive threats like medicham and heracross can actually stay alive and dish out their big hits instead of just getting chipped by sand over time and why defensive pokemon like suicune and snorlax can stay alive despite taking repeated hits.with that gone i feel like the meta would be so much more different

      @IschmarVI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      as a whole ,it is definitely leftovers. The impact, that lefties had on gen 2 surpass everything that items in later generations can possibly have because later generations have so many more options that several items will be viable no matter what. Gen 2 was ... different. There were essentially three items that were used in 99% of cases. 1. leftovers, 2. no item (to steal the opponent's left overs), 3. thick club (allowing marowak to do marowak things). That's pretty much it.
      Boots are possibly the second most defining item though. They changed certain aspects about the game forever and that is saying a lot.

    I think actually bringing the Pokemon up, rather than just hovering the mouse of it, is better even though it probably saves you a lot of effort (and most treat this like a podcast).
    I personally don't use sound only for these videos, and keep them to the side of my screen while I focus on something else. Having the image of the pokemon in question appear in the corner of my eye helps me follow along, while the mouse hovers require me to glance back every now and then in order to gain something from what you are saying.

    • @IschmarVI
      @IschmarVI 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      then eat, my friend. For baton pass in gen 5 is absolutely dumb, retarded, ridiculous, stupid, outrageous ... you get the idea. First, there is this wonderful move called "shell smash", which increases 3 of your stats by 2 stages (the defense drop can be reverted with white herb), in A SINGLE TURN. Then, there is this fun pokemon called "espeon" that is immune to roar and whirlwind and also has a move called "stored power", which after that single shell smash hits a base power of 140, coming off an unmatchable speed and impressive base special attack (with +2 of course because counterplay is overrated). And that is just the tip of the iceberg... oh, and espeon can also boost itself even further with calm mind and can ALSO learn baton pass if a counter switches in and then just pass the stat boosts to the next pokemon (you know, the +2 speed, +2 attack, +3 special attack and +1 special defense), which could, for example, be a tintend lens venomoth that then starts dropping unresisted bug buzzes everywhere ... or uses quiver dance and boosts even further until it passes back to someone else who is more effective against the enemy counter poke.
      Oh, yeah ... btw,. Quiver dance is a thing, lol.

    Snorlax isn't completely invincible against strong special moves, blissey may as well be.
    Though, suicune would prob be bulky enough, i guess.

      even blissey is not FULLY immune against strong special moves, although it comes really close.
      Houndoom Fire Blast vs. Blissey in Sun on a critical hit: 332-391 (46.5 - 54.8%) -- 99.7% chance to 2HKO after Spikes and Leftovers recovery
      yes, that's a VERY unlikely scenario, but still. Even blobs bleed ... sometimes.

    If pre gen 6 Knock Off was a part of GSC how do you think it would change the metagame? Assuming it has limited distribution (ex Donphan, Tangela, Gligar)

    Light Ball, Thick Club, King's Rock, Bright Powder, MetalPowder, Quick Claw, Scope Lens, and 17 type boosting items. That's every single "useful" held item that isn't leftovers. So you'll be using leftovers? Got it.
    JK Lucky Punch Chansey is SOOO OP. It's better than Stick at least.

    What GSC needs is to
    A) Ban Snorlax, Snorlax is top dog in Ubers over Mewtwo yet it's somehow allowed to be on OU? Furthermore it is in over 99% of the teams, no Pokemon has ever been as dominant in OU and allowed to stay there.
    B) One Leftover per team, the fact of the matter is Leftover is THE best item of those introduced in Gen2. Proof of that is that it along with Miracle(Lum) Berry are the only items from this Gen that still see competitive play and have not been powercrept.

      Banning snorlax is not a good idea. Snorlax isn't defeating every team solo, it's not a threat with only a few counters, it has many (depending on its moveset). Skarm can beat electricless and fireless, steelix can beat fireless and groundless, tyranitar can beat groundless, etc. Even then, there are so many exploders to stop it.
      It absolutely can be dealt with. Without snorlax, the electrics would be far too powerful to stop, and special attackers would dominate the metagame.
      Even if you ban Lax, there will always be a top 1 mon that every team needs. Thats just how gen 1 and 2 work. In uu every team needs a nidoqueen, in nu its Xatu, in gen1 ou its tauros, in gen1 uu its hypno and tentacruel. There will always be a top 1 in this gen, and snorlax fills this role.

      @@A_quip While I generally agree with you, I wouldn't say that lower tiers have a snorlax equivalent. Nidoqueen/Granbull/Xatu are amazing, but they are droppable, at least

    the lack of a script makes this very hard to listen to. You lose track of the topic and go on tangents, on top of not concisely or eloquently conveying/elaborating on ur points.
