    Scald (Japanese: ねっとう Boiling Water) is a damage-dealing Water-type move introduced in Generation V. It was TM55 from Generation V to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, TM29 in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, TR84 in Pokémon Sword and Shield, and TM49 in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. In Generation IX, it is one of the signature moves of Volcanion.

  • @TectonicImprov
    @TectonicImprov ปีที่แล้ว +125

    I think what bothers me the most about Scald is that conceptually I really like the idea of the move. It makes a lot of sense to me that hitting an opponent with boiling hot water would hurt really bad and would possibly leave the burn status. However, I think Game Freak failed to realize just how powerful a move like that really was, and so basically every water type in the game got access to the move. A classic example of the rich getting richer. I'm very happy that Scald is no longer a TM and is way more exclusive.

    • @mandalorianhunter1
      @mandalorianhunter1 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      It's way to exclusive, I think it should still be on certain Pokemon instead of just one like what happened with knockoff.

      Game Frick is fine adding a ton of broken shit to their games.

    • @TectonicImprov
      @TectonicImprov ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@mandalorianhunter1 I agree. It only being on Volcanion (and I think one other I can't remember atm) is definitely an overcorrection. I still think it's better than every water type ever having it but I wouldn't mind if it was learned by some less than stellar water types, or maybe even a few fire types (like Camerupt or something) if it makes sense.

    • @mandalorianhunter1
      @mandalorianhunter1 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TectonicImprov no it's only on Volcanion and it was on Raikou, who definitely needed it to fight ground and rocks types. Looking it up, it was on some poison, bug/fire and ground types as well so it wasn't just exclusive to fire.
      I understand it was over centralizing to the meta, that's why they added covert cloak to gen 9.
      Funny enough we have salt Cure, yeah it's on one mon but it's still annoying to deal with.

      That's not a good argument. Your ending was rude, so i'll be concise.
      1. Set up sweepers can sweep an entire team. And it's easier to set up sweep than it is to set up 6 double teams.
      2. Sleep, paralysis, attraction, confusion, critical hits, moves that arent 100% accurate, etc are ALL coin flips. Theyre based on luck. I can find multiple poke.on youtube videos of playthroughs and matches where they only lose because they were infatuated 4 times in a row or paralyzed 6 turns in a row, or stone edge missed 5 times or a critical hit ran through all the defensive set up they accumulated. Luck is an integral part of the game.
      3. Minimize doesnt let you evade all attacks that come your way. Plenty of attacks get through. But this ignores my argument (which suggests you didnt read it) about the tons of moves of doverse type, power, and movepool that hit past accuracy checks. Also...of you think double iron bash is the only viable move that hits past accuracy, youre clearly not in a place to criticze. Aura sphere is right there. Popular, and on pokemon known for set up potential.
      4. I never mentioned hazards. You made up a stance for me and the spoke condescendingly about it.
      5. Good thing you mentioned defog, because if you dont have one of the very few moves that removes hazards, it becomes a huge hinderance. Sticky web alone can destroy a team's viability. Speedy Glass cannons are insanely popular. And without one of the few pokemon that can learn one of the few moves to counter it, it could cost you the game.
      6. So anyway, the negatives of evasion you criticize are present in many popular mechanics of pokemon. Evasion has a number of counters in moves, abilities, items, etc. The main issue is that it's unpopular. Like talking about lack of support for male abuse victims on a conversation about gender equality. It's not wrong. You just arent ready to hear it.

    30% effect for something as strong as burn is just mathematically funky.
    If you click Scald twice, you _are_ more likely than not to burn the target. This wouldn't be the case if it was 20%
    Of course, the problem with Scald is more the distribution more than anything, "dude let's just give a bulky water a move with 30% burn", but it is very notable that on average it will be worth to click Scald twice against a phys. attacker, regardless of damage

    On the topic of body slam, I do genuinely think it should be bumped up to 95 base power to compensate for the loss of return. Sludge Bomb got away with 90 base power and 30% poison, and scald has ripped the hairs out of many a player, so I think that maybe 95 BP Body slam would be scary, but not the worst thing in the world.

    also w/r/t (yeah i read a lot of david foster wallace in high school) the subject of people bringing cheese against “better” players in tournaments, i agree with you but i’m also sympathetic to an extent. i try to put myself in the shoes of a player who aspires to be great, puts in the work, reads metagame analyses, studies replays, hones their skills on the ladder and in roomtours before finally starting to join and play in individual tours, gradually starts achieving some impressive results and getting noticed while being a common and positive presence on the forums, finally getting drafted to spl or whatever prestigious team tournament, and finding out their first game is against, like, abr or someone. in that situation you’re the “new guy” surrounded by people who have more social capital than you in a hobby you care deeply about, staring down a player far better than anyone you’ve ever played before, and it’s very easy to feel like you’re letting your team down if you don’t try to maximize your odds of winning by any means. again, i’m not a tournament player so idk if it would ever happen like that but it’s just something ive been thinking about

  • @hiei49
    @hiei49 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    My 2 cents:
    - In the ladder you have to gain knowledge. LEARNING is the main goal
    - In a tournament you need to use your knowledge to maximize your odds of getting a favourable situation in every game. WINNING is the main goal.
    Lets assume that a player didnt follow step 1, or that you he is just inexperienced or new. Then this player wouldnt be able to say 'yeah, im running 216 defense IVs on my Politoed instead of 240 because it is more optimal'.
    Thus, this player would stick to a very standard set that doesnt have huge optimizations, and as a result, a more experienced player will get a big edge because he knows how to optimize standard teams.
    If he, instead, goes way over the tangent and plays something unorthodox, then his chances of getting the more experienced opponent off guard is higher, so the chance of winning the game is higher, and that is all that matters for that player in the tournament. It can infuriate the opponent or the spectators, but that is his best play (unless he is overestimating the difference in skill).
    But I think the problem is that:
    1) Players dont practice in ladder enough using different playstyles, some of them cheesy and some others not so much. As a result, they dont get the knowledge they need to perform in tournaments
    2) Smogon cant ban every type of cheese: You can ban stuff like evasion, baton pass or even stuff like gen 5 clorophyl, but then someone like me can show up with a Nasty Plot Technician Alola persian and OHKO Landorus and Ferrothorn for a cheap win (this was a gen 7 OU ladder game, but still).
    3) Tournaments arent designed to be cheese robust: If matches are best of 7 for example, then a cheesy player can get 2 or 3 wins by matchup fishing, but the odds of advancing a round would be way smaller than a single game or a best of 3.
    I think a better tournament format is the main solution to the problem. That would greatly encourage players to get more knowledge of each gen instead of thinking of which cheese they should apply next.

    I think move distribution in general, but especially for moves like scald, is too wide in general. It especially saddens me cos I mostly play natdex formats where there's no going back. I think individual Pokémon would be more interesting if they were more unique by reducing mobepools; like Toxic was an asset instead of a given to a Pokémon's movepool. I think scald is one of the worst offenders (until gen 9), giving every water the ability to omegacripple half of all mons was not a smart. I'd be cool with like mons where you can sorta argue it makes sense lore wise kinda like what they did with Volcanion but give it to a few more waters (Gyarados would make sense, probably Kingdra too, etc)

    my favorite dumb take: we should unban OHKO moves. so many games have been lost by a miss that i doubt anyone would use these moves
    my other take that i refuse to believe is dumb: smogon banning flinch cheese on everything but rachi/kiss is beyond dumb. oh i can’t use kings rock maushold? which btw, only has 66% chance to hit 10 times and only 66% chance to flinch if you hit 10 times, effectively a 44% chance MAX and gen 8 cloyster. oh yeah but scarf rachi and togekiss just getting 60% flinch chance is totally not stupid especially with para on top.

    sry high af rn, but for the argument of taking the game more or less into your hands by using cheese strategies I just wanted to say I agree very much, great take. I also would always rather use teams that put game outcome more into my hands as a player rather than rolling the dice. ig my thoughts are that what do we consider "cheese"? Like I think rather than black or white examples, I its more of a gradient for any strategy (like certain team comps or builds). They fall somewhere along the spectrum of "cheese" and everyone has there personal point on that spectrum that is cheese or not. Like some people might argue using a niche pokemon like porygon in RBY OU or maybe idk Camperupt in ADV OU would be considered cheese ya know? Could you argue using low accuracy moves with higher risk and reward to be more cheesy? So rather than a noun we have an adjective describing how cheesy something is rather than the yes or no verdict. Because by definition using low accuracy moves is more of a gamble and putting the odds of victory less in your hands by a mathematical metric. idk sorry long ramble but I guess if you could explain what exacltly u consider cheese in pokemon.

      Reading the comments I saw some copypasta about a guy advocating for evasion clause, I'm sure this is widely considered cheese by everyone, so much in fact that its actually banned for the reason of taking games out of peoples hands. So would you say this mechanic is one of the most cheese of all by your definition? Thus explaining its ban?

    My take on cheese is if you want to bring it on ladder, friendlies or even individual tours then you do you. I agree it should be avoided in team tours because you aren't just effecting yourself it doesn't work out but an entire team.

    Where is the line drawn between player specific prep and MU fishing? If you notice that a player you're scheduled to play favors a certain archetype or pokemon, and you bring a team meant to exploit that at the cost of weaker MUs elsewhere, would that be considered cheese?
