- T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s parent company TJX made almost $50 billion last year - more than Nordstrom and Macy’s combined. A decades-old TJ Maxx commercial promises customers “the max for the minimum price” and says the store is “never the same place twice.” But how does the clothing store get its inventory and sell it at such a discount?
WSJ explains how the off-price retailer gains its inventory and uses consumer psychology to keep customers coming back for more.

This video completely failed to mention that majority of the inventory is not overstock anymore. Since the early 2000s/10s most designers stopped this practice since they realized they could make more money and not devalue their brand by engineering lower quality clothes at different factories specifically made to be sold at lower cost/outlet retailers with just their brand’s tag added. That’s why for ex Michael Kors/Kate Spade bags u see at outlets or TJMaxx are MUCH lower quality than the ones in the store
An outlet store manager confirmed that over 20 years old
very good observation I was going to comment on that.
Exactly. Even such Vince “$29.99” discounted shirt still makes a good profit. The same shirt may sell only $10-$15 in China’s online outlet (from the same manufacturer).
Common sense is not common. It's nothing new that TJ Maxx carries cheaper quality stuff than boutique
At least 65% of products are made to order, just like the brands' outlet divisions.
One of the reasons people are hooked on TJ Maxx is because they're constantly getting new products in, so people who are "Maxxinistas" keep coming back to the store (once a week, several times a week or even daily) to see what's new, what's been discounted, etc. Customers typically don't do this at regular department stores.
😩 totally me! I’m obsessed with homegoods! I go once a week to see what new things they have! 🥹
This is so accurate. Saturday is my TJMaxx run, even when I am traveling, must visit a store where ever I am.
The treasure hunting strategy!
Oh so consumerism and materialistic lifestyle :(

TJ Max built a business around an inefficient supply chain and it's absolutely brilliant.
Organising by type instead of brand, is what department stores used to be like in the “good old days”. It makes PERFECT sense but stops them from renting floor space for shop-in-shops.
You cannot cut your way out of recession you've got to invest your way out of recession, the Conservative party are in the dark ages on policy they've got to think again. My primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about £170k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.
A strategy to protect against inflation is through the U.S stock market, especially the S&P500 & various ETFs. Investors must know where to put their money and how to distribute it in order to protect it against inflation while still making a profit, especially during a recession.
The truth is that people are finally waking up to the fact that our systems are breaking down in thousands of different ways all around us. Personally, the financial market seems like the only way to go with my long-term horizon (accumulated about £557,000 in earnings since May 2021), but if you don't have that time luck, it's a tough market out there down almost nowhere feels safe!
I've known I've wanted to start investing for a few months but just haven't been brave enough to start due to the market so far since mid last year. I have 60k i want to transfer into an s&s isa but its hard to bite the bullet and do it. £557k is a huge milestone , Please whats your strategy ? i will love to have an insight.

These bots are nuts
Legit my favorite store. I was wondering why they haven’t moved to e-commerce but I guess it detracts from the overall allure of in store shopping/bargain finding
they have a website
If they add thrifting to this its game over for everyone else lol
I used to work at TJX. The compare at price is made up - they aren’t actually discounted.
I always thought so! When I shop I look at that other tag and feel like it was guesstimated to make the sale price look good.
I found a beautiful Remy Brook blouse discounted a few times and the price was $6, the compare price was actual designer price of like $495, which was real designer price as I checked on the store web. Quality was outstanding and I believe the true price was very high.
I've seen the compare at price be incorrect in both directions. I've definitely seen items such as handbags have an estimated retail value of, let's say, $295 when I know for a fact that the item retails for $395 because I've been shopping around for it. People assume TJX is always exaggerating the MSRP to make their deals look better, but that's not always the case.
TJ Maxx is also open early. That’s a huge deal for people who only have time to shop for themselves early morning during the week. TJ Maxx, Kohl’s, Ross, Target, Walmart. All the early bird stores
This economics of series is amazing. PLEASE KEEP IT GOING.
The merchandise is door to floor in 8 hours not 24, and the apparel doesn’t come in on rails it comes in boxes and needs to be unboxed and hung. Each box is a mystery could have beauty, home, pet, clothing etc.
Retail stores do clean-up after closing and preparation before opening; the 8-hour window you’re referring to is just the public shopping hours. So it might actually be closer to 24…
I have been a TJM customer for 35 years. Almost all my clothing shoes bags jewelry and accessories are from this place. I find a lot of really good quality items made in Italy Portugal Spain that I love and use for years.
Yes I look for those as well. My favorite finds are my Aran sweaters, hand knit in Ireland, made from Merino wool.
I was addicted to shopping for a couple of years and I have so many designer shirts with the tag still on them because anytime I saw a designer shirt with a original $50-70 price tag and the new $12.99-24.99 price i would immediately buy because I was thinking more about the deal I’m scoring then the actual usefulness of it
Worked for Homegoods, the Quality of merchandise and Brands are Exellent!!!!!
I briefly worked at a TJ maxx specifically to learn about why do people line up before the store opens to shop. I learned a lot about merchandising and how the "treasure hunt" and scarcity product mix drives people to return day after day (especially for brands like Rae Dunn, or after the holidays) to find that special item. Admittedly, I still look for this one decorative item I missed out years ago.
I bought stock in TJX after reading about the backup glut of clothing in ports during the pandemic. Made sense that they would have a bounty of new, cheap inventory. Up a little over 50% already!
What stock are you looking at now?
@@joyaustin6581 with zero investigation into financials, I’m looking at InBev, the international parent company of Anheuser Busch. The stock is down because of all that other nonsense, but it will blow over and I’ll be happy to get in at a discount.
You spelled “plandemic” wrong. 😂
So smart!
I bought the stock also and it has increased due to the business model, which is based on smaller stores located in not the highest rent areas. The physical stores and the e-commerce traffic drive sales. I keep watching and praying for an Aldi IPO; the growth of Aldi and family ownership is bound to evolve into a public company. I saw this with Johanna Farms ( bought by LaBott 1984 ) and Jamman & Associates ( bought by P S I early 90's ) and AMNA ( bought by AON, 1993 ). You are smart about InBev, now is the time to buy )
One of the main reason i took consumer psychology was to become a more conscious and savvy shopper preventing me from succumbing to these strategies.
❤ tj Maxx
I’ve been shopping at tj maxx and Marshall’s for over 15 yrs. I think I’ve spent more than $30,000. I go here when I’m depressed( to taking a walk), when i need to buy gifts, when my nephews are bored at home, and when I ate too much( for exercise). TJ Maxx doesn’t need a 8000 sq ft space. It can open up a store in a small strip mall. Amazing company 😊
This is a complete lie. I worked for the company for years and 60% of the product is produced for their stores through licensing agreements. They are not true close outs or overstocks.
That $39.99 Michael Kors shirt is $39.99 quality with a perceived value compare at of $80. People are such sheep.
Yeah I mean just look at 2:01 this doesn't look like it is worth 1600$ and compares to 2145$ 🤣
People just buy everything if they think they make a really good deal ....
Personally I just buy something if I think it’s a decent price for what it is. I don’t even factor in the “original” price because I have to stick to a strict budget.
So you’re saying ~40% of the product is not produced to the stores through licensing agreements? Not bad.
In stores like Macy’s, you pay $80 for the same $39.99 quality Michael Kors shirt. Most things are made horribly these days regardless of what you pay for them.
These stores drive me crazy. So disorganized, my OCD goes CRAZY! I generally avoid them.
TJ max also has a lot of irregular clothing where the seams are off or are not even on both sides or have cheap quality that gets altered like color and fit for basic items that are not delicates. A lot of their items have some sort of flaw. Just really check the product before buying.
I used to love TJ Maxx and was an avid shopper but as their prices increased and the merch quality decreased I just quit shopping their or anywhere else entirely. Saved my money and bought a brand new car! Best decision ever!!
I have to say though, the clothing always has flaws. Weird shapes, odd texture, zippers that are not smooth, material that easily rips. Its a surplus for a reason. However, I still like it and love going there for rare gems.
Never have those issues.
Never had a problem either.
Interesting. It has not happened yet.
Nope.
You have to learn how to spot the low quality items to get the most out of tjmaxx
The TJ Maxx near me in Tustin seems to have a peculiar problem of people stealing things out of your cart when you aren’t looking. And sometimes they’ll steal something and put it back on a random shelf. You have to be really vigilant about guarding your cart and it’s really annoying.
That’s bizarre! People need to get a life.
I love TJ Maxx but some things are not a bargain, and are the same price elsewhere. Ex: Aquaphor ointment is $14 here and also $14 at Walgreens. But usually it’s the discounted luxury/midrange deals I go for, like getting a $80 Rodin hand cream for $7, or a $150 golf jacket for $50. The margin of savings definitely depends on what sort of item you’re buying!
Several of the biggest market experts have been voicing their opinions on exactly how awful they think the next downturn would be, and how far equities may have to go, as recession draws closer and inflation continues.. well above the Fed's 2% objective. I'm trying to build a portfolio of at least $850k by the time I'm 60. I need suggestions on what investments to make..
I'll suggest you find a mentor or someone with experience guide you especially in this recession. especially for your 401K, IRA and portfolio diversification.
I agree, that's the more reason I prefer my day to day invt decisions being guided by a init-coach, seeing that their entire skillset is built around going long and short at the same time both employing risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying off risk as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, coupled with the exclusive information/analysis they have, it's near impossible to not out-perform, been using a init-coach for over 2years+ and I've netted over 2.8million.
@@lipglosskitten2610 I've been thinking of going that route been holding on to a bunch of stocks that keeps tanking and I don't know if to keep holding or just dump them, think your Inv-coach could guide me with portfolio-restructuring..

So basically we're getting bamboozled. What a classic
Haven’t shopped there since the 2000’s. I used to find authentic designer jeans (True Religion, 7FAM, Joe’s etc) as well as Cavalli tees and such. No more 😂😂
I know people say these are not true overstocks but I feel like this also depends on the location (said elsewhere). I’m in a fairly affluent area and I see a big difference in inventory compared to other stores I’ve been at. And they’re items I’ve literally seen at other places so I know they’re true discounts. But the inventory of these items is definitely much smaller and harder to find.
TJ Maxx is cheaper than evil Goodwill. They have their formula dialed in and I'm glad it works as I've found great deals at their stores.
And you don’t have clothes with that distinctive thrift store smell.
Hey, thrifting is awesome! I don’t support Goodwill though since they are overpriced.
There's a huge environmental cost of only shopping for new items - a lot goes into clothing production, from energy usage, oil and gas to ship the products from factory to store, water usage during fabric production, and mining/farming of raw materials. And most people don't recycle their old clothes, and send them to landfill where they'll sit for a thousand years. Buying secondhand is a great way to offset that. I have tons of thrift stores in my area that I can get great deals at.
I love these videos so much! Keep them coming!
The most disappointing thing is working for a tjmaxx or Marshall’s is seeing people take handfuls or laundry baskets full of things and just walk out with it. There’s literally so much theft and the employees cannot do anything to stop the person stealing we literally just watch them take as much as they want. & yet we’re pressured to get at least 5 customers a day to sign up for our tjx rewards card 🤦🏻♀️
Ive seen TJ maxx throw away unsold merchandise by bulk and dumping it offseas so I don't feel bad people necessarily steal. Sorry you aren't paid well though
I agree with the first commenter. You aren’t paid well enough to be law enforcement, or even care about their bottom line really.
That’s a microcosm of the macrocosm. The people who run our country are doing the same exact thing but on a much larger scale. We need a renaissance of ethics and decency.
We all end of paying more when scummy jerks steal.
What- I always paid for stuff from tjmaxx lol, makes me wanna try stealing things...
KIDDING!!! how pathetic are you if you can't even afford discounted designer items and are stealing them instead....
All three stores are plain and simply fun to shop at. 😍
There are two things the TJ’s is pretty sharp at focusing on: folks who shop for items who can pay (and will pay) any amount for something they really want - and if it happens to be priced lower than common retail-GREAT!..…and those shoppers who come in with “price point mentality”….who judge each item on the value it has to their wardrobe. A pair of tiny, cute pink shorts for $178? Nope. Same shorts at an averaged price of $50? Still Nope. Same shorts at $39:99? Still STILL Nope. Same shorts at $10? Probably a yes. TJ’s really has got it down to a science. And don’t forget about hunting down a deal - best part of the day!💕
WSJ please keep these videos coming, I really enjoy them and you’re creating value for everyone involved in the process.
This is great and all but the minimum wage employees face all the stress. I worked in the warehouse at Marshalls for a year and every morning at 7AM we used to get 7-8 pallets of merch delivered to the store. I have personally processed thousands of shirts, t-shirts, dresses and other items by putting security tags and hanging them on racks for display. Its not fun I'll tell you that much. Also the work is tedious but you develop some useful skills along the way and understand how the entire system works from the grasseoot level.
If you don't want a minimum wage job get a career that is not easily expendable you'll see the difference 😉.
Tbh just let AI take over no skill jobs
@ ronijr4918 these jobs aren’t expendable, they are severely undervalued. Hence a massive shortage of wharehouse workers. But even without a shortage, if wharehouse workers decided to go on strike tomorrow, our economy would immediately plummet. So very much a necessary job on many levels
How come wen you ask the tellers at the register for the hangers they don’t give them away. Do you guys reuse them?
@ronijr4918 I work a non-mininum wage job, we are probably the most inexpendable as a profession, and the biggest difference I see is that we are far more stressed out than we are paid to be. The pay does not always scale with the stress level.
I worked for the company decades ago and I love the stores. I have purchased several high priced items for rock bottom prices.
TJMaxx has so much good stuff that can't be beat
You used to get reallllllly good deals at tjmax and Marshall’s like early 2000s, really fell off the last 6 or so years
It’s called Winners and HomeSense in Canada - my two favourite stores. I constantly promote them to other people because as far as deals go, you really can’t beat what you get there, and the quality for the price. As they say here in their slogan “Why shop anywhere else” and it’s true. It’s like thrift shopping for new things instead of old. I love it 🥰
My favorite store. I love that they sort clothes by size, easy to find you aisle and go.
Here in Germany it's called "TK Maxx" and I love it! The clothes and home supplies I bought there last for many years!
Like someone mentioned in a comment Most of TJ's Maxx's product is produced for their stores through licensing agreements. They are not true close outs or overstocks. Also some stores and are hit or miss. The TJ Maxx closer to me has not really anything worth buying for men but the store has a good amount of customers all the time, mostly women.
There are specific locations that have good merchandise and specific locations that u know if u go u ll only find “trash”. The better the neighborhood and area the better the store!
There’s still some overstock. Ibought sunglasses there and a day later I saw the exact same ones in another store for triple the price. It was just last years color.
It’s a combination of licensed products, overstock and left overs from stores that needs to get rid of it because they need the space.
it’s crazy the stuff i find sometimes but the fun part is hunting for them with all the mess compared to the thift prices now i found a 2 piece swimsuit from versace for around 200 and originally 500 and the style was new not even outdated
Really informative and interesting video. I always shop for makeup at my local tj max because it allows me to actually afford makeup brands I would never try at full price. Sometimes I will see the same exact MAC makeup in the mall as on the shelf at tj max at the same time and wondered how they did it. Now I feel I have some insight.
Yes!! I love shopping at Marshalls/TJMaxx for Beauty items. They have the best deals on ABH, Mac, Urban Decay, etc. I go like once a week lol.

In recent months, I found deals at Macy Backstage similar to Marshall or Ross. A 40oz double wall water bottle for $14.99 . Dresses, blouses etc thier Activewear prices are great and lots of colors selection
Very informative content…& useful I might add
I work there, since I start working at tjmaxx I didn't go to any other store to shop. excellent items at great prices, and we try to give excellent customer service.
Sadly as much as I love winners. The service is non. I bring in my own bags and they still wont bag it for me. This has just been since C-19
To be honest… true fashionistas know… that while we do love tj Maxx for certain things… I personally love the jewelry section…. Shopping in department stores and online during sale season.. at the lowest markdown… is cheaper than buying those designer items at the TJ Maxx locations that sell them. It truly depends on the item
Awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Loved shopping at tjmaxx but hated working there. All the managers ever cared about is shoving the TJX credit card down customers throats.
In other words the customers are suckers 😂

I loooooove TJ MAXX and Marshall and HomeGoods ❤😊
Its TK Maxx in Australia, it works because there's so many extras-products coming in and no one including managers knows whats coming in, could be a dress from Prada could be a $50 shirt from a small brand.
It really save time to shop in these discount retailers with a strategy. If im looking for skirts, i only focus on the skirts sections.
They use to get in much more aspirational fancy items. Saksoff5th is now the better option for more formal wear. Marshall’s and tjmaxx is almost only casual wear
The inventory depends on the city’s location.
The Wall St store has different quality inventory than Chicago or Superior, Colorado- near Boulder. I often walk out with nothing in Colorado.
Ty for this
i love T.J. Maxx. Ross, Marshalls, Homegoods...
I love tj maxx during Covid it was one of my favorite things to do. It was nice to see me and everyone one else in their mask 😂
The original prices are BS. I had a few friends who worked at a boutique designer clothing store and they got a 85% off employee discount. Even though there was such a huge discount, the store still profited. It was supposed to be some luxurious local brand but the quality was terrible. Just because you advertise yourself as "designer" or "luxurious" and hire "influencers" to promote your brand, it doesn't mean you actually are. And nowadays the big "designer" brands just slap their name and logo on anything. LTT made a video about the Tommy Hilfiger keyboard and mouse. Surprise, surprise, it was absolute garbage.
i understand my mother so deeply now
0:20 the chart is misleading: it says "market capitalization" but it is showing revenue...
I miss when the bath products were actually good. Now they are all weird crummy off brands. And now they out the bar soaps in a separate area. It used to be a blast to shop in those aisles. Just not the same anymore!
I have never been more positive to TJMaxx than after watching this video.
The anchor price is also already an anchor price for the original manufacturer or retail, most of it never actually sells for that price.
Actually I don’t think they’re allowed to make the compare to price higher that the lowest sale price from the company - if that makes sense
@@haileyespinosa8400 I understand, but it's not true, I've often looked up prices in store to check if it's actually a good deal and the comparison price is MSRP.

The basic concept sounds like Century 21 but presented in an orderly manner.
So what do you guys think about the beauty products? I used to buy them but I sensed that most of the brands are produced just for those discount stores. I’m really curious about the high end hair products, like the shampoos that are really expensive elsewhere. Do you think those are inferior quality or overstock?
I think these are the same quality at least the ones I got but I compare to getting them from Amazon otherwise so maybe TJ and AmZ both get from the same source. But either way fantastic quality.
They used to actually have some overstock and decent ones! But youre right, most of it is trash. It took away all the charm!
All I can say is whatever you're doing TJ Maxx keep doing it. Go on TJ Maxx!
Thank you for video 😊
I can’t really shop successfully at this kind of store. I go in looking for one thing and end up finding other things I don’t need. The sheer amount of different styles is overwhelming and difficult to navigate. I go home with a top and realize it’s too small. I return it. Because they don’t carry it there is no larger size for me. I also know I am susceptible to buying when I find a “deal”… but on the other hand, so what if it retails for double!? That means nothing. I don’t have success there so I don’t go anymore.
People who like shopping - as a hobby - don't recognize it that way - I don't like shopping and am like you - prefer to "buy" what I need not shop around all day
I love Marshall’s and TJ Maxx. I buy a lot of my clothes from there at good prices.
Meaning majority of the brands are over pricing. TJ Maxx can bargain each product because they know that they can still earn in each of bargained item ofcourse what is the point of having a business if you are only going to lose money. I also do shop in TJ but sometimes the clothing looks factory reject and on the cosmetics im always careful on the expiration date.
buy high quality items that you need, don't go into stores aimlessly
Is this the same for the fragrances sold there?
Costco has the best clothing prices.
My costco has a limited variety. All too casual.
OMG.... It is harder to let go on a deal when you know it's not going to be back again.
It’s not the same anymore. You can still get some good deal, but a lot of the products like clothing and bedding are poor quality.
Tj maxx always has good deals
I’m rubbing my hands at these deals 🗿
What I don't understand around @1:51 is why do they have 2 different reference prices ( like rag and bones accidentally left out original price tag "125.00" and tj Max's comparison "50.00".
Where did the Maxx even get the 50.00 price tag from?
2:05 they explain it. just a comparison to similar items
I purchased a famous artist painting at home goods / Marshall’s for $3,000 it’s worth $15-20k. Deal of a lifetime for me
Which one was it ?
But wether they show the “original price” next to the now, doesn’t matter. They really are affordable period.
Ever since COVID seems like these stand alone stores have done great! (Ross, target)
I love TK Maxx!
TJ is organize d, clean and convenient. Ross is also good. If Marshalls is near you go there. Macy's is ok but not as good as it use to be
I went to TK Maxx yesterday but I couldn't find anything worth buying. Yes, it's cheaper but it takes ages to find something you like and then you need to try on every single item before buying something which takes time again VS going to a store that only sells one brand and if you know your size then you don't even need to try it on.
Btw this might be different in the US, but here in the UK (TK Maxx) isn't even that much cheaper. Sometimes you can find cheaper items in regular stores when stuff is on sale
No, it's the same in the U.S. I only go to TJMax w/ my sister bc she loves sifting through the racks for the hunt. With stores the way they are: people leaving merchandise everywhere and not enough staff to put things back, it often looks like a mess to me, and I can't bring myself to shop there. (I mean, I prefer Uniqlo bc they are really organized). I just wait for my sister to bring me clothes at the fitting room.
